The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:People from medieval Macedonia after purging. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 16:32, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:ARBITRARYCAT WP:CROSSCAT. Both "rulers" (not a title) and "in medieval Macedonia" (not a dynastic domain) are so vague as to verge on WP:NONDEFINING. Apart from the 2 clearly defined subcategories (which are already in the sibling Category:Medieval Thessalonica), the 10 items in this cat are an arbitrary random mix of officials, magnates, nobles, aristocrats, military leaders, warlords, rebels, and alleged "de facto rulers" of some parts of a vaguely defined region that is so arbitrary and contested that Greece and North Macedonia spent the past 3 decades still arguing about it. The same arbitrary random mix can be found in its parent Category:Medieval Macedonia, so I suggest we "park" them there for the time being, perhaps until someone comes up with something more defining, objective and relevant as a subcategory. The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: Rename (non-admin closure) * Pppery * it has begun... 15:05, 13 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: Per precedent "Category:Women rulers in Asia" > Category:Women monarchs in Asia. I took a long time to prepare this nomination by sorting out all items that had been thrown in this catch-all category. This resulted in lots of moving, and the creation of several more specific categories that better cover these women's positions: Category:Women presidents in Africa, Category:Women prime ministers in Africa, Category:Female regents in Africa, and Category:Female chiefs in Africa. The latter is a new subcategory, the other three are in different trees because they are not sovereign hereditary monarchs. With the recent renaming of empresses consort of Ethiopia, this CfR can now proceed.
PS: I should note that the legal/political position of queen mothers in Africa (Queen mother (Africa), Category:African queen mothers) is complicated, and varies by time, place, country and culture. In some places, queen mothers are regents, in others they are probably also monarchs, particularly in the case of Eswatini (Swaziland). This makes good categorisation difficult at times, because the role of queen mothers is unlike anything known in Western cultures and political systems. Anthropologists and historians have (probably rightly) theorised or concluded that many queen mother traditions in African countries go back to matrilineal hereditary succession, and perhaps times long ago when there had been some sort of "matriarchy" rather than patriarchy as commonly known in e.g. European history. At times I struggled to categorise the queen mothers of Eswatini as queen mothers, female regents, or women monarchs, or some combination of the three, trying to do them justice. Outside of Eswatini, most of them can be categorised as both queen mothers and female regents, but not women monarchs, based on their biographies. Category:Hunnic rulers[edit]

The result of the discussion was: merge and rename. (non-admin closure)LaundryPizza03 (d) 03:48, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: WP:C2D List of kings of the Huns, which I BOLDly renamed because the position was already widely called "king" in the article, opening sentence and infobox (about 33 times "king" as opposed to about 7 times "ruler"). The 4th-century subcat is a WP:SMALLCAT that should be upmerged, the 5th-century subcat just needs the same renaming. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 20:46, 8 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename/merge per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 23:15, 8 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Neutral on rulers/kings, oppose upmerging "4th-century Hunnic rulers". Ordinarily I'd be fine with using "kings" to describe a category that consists entirely or almost entirely of kings, but here we have a category tree based on the use of "rulers", probably because there are or could be queens or empresses or other non-kings. Consistency is good, though not essential—another related category already uses "kings". But as for upmerging "4th-century Hunnic rulers", while the category is indeed quite small, it is also a subcategory of "4th-century rulers in Europe", and merging it with other Hunnic rulers would prevent anyone viewing the parent category from finding those who were Huns. The usefulness of identifying European rulers/kings/monarchs/etc. by century would seem to outweigh any possible gain from deleting a small category. If the category is merged, then the individual members would need to be added to the parent category, which currently consists entirely of subcategories, and does not contain individual rulers; this is another reason not to merge. P Aculeius (talk) 13:32, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We could add Balamber and Uldin to Category:4th-century rulers in Europe, no problem. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 13:28, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose Hunnic rulers aren't generally called kings in English.★Trekker (talk) 20:10, 9 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
According to Google Books, "hunnic kings" is much more WP:COMMONNAME than "hunnic rulers". Same goes for "hunnic king" versus "hunnic ruler", "king of the huns" versus "ruler of the huns", and "kings of the huns" versus "rulers of the huns". So your claim appears to be statistically incorrect. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 13:35, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To be fair, the only Hunnish ruler most English speakers have heard of is Attila, and he's usually called "Attila the Hun", not "King Attila of the Huns". I have no argument with calling him a king, at least loosely speaking, but technically most mentions of Attila don't call him anything except "the Hun". You know, as if there were all these other non-Hunnish Attilas running around that they need to distinguish him from. I guess "Attila the Hun" is just really catchy! P Aculeius (talk) 19:44, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hahaha! Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 19:52, 10 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • Balance so far: 3 Rename/upmerge (myself included), 1 Oppose all, 1 Oppose upmerging "4th-century Hunnic rulers" and otherwise Neutral. Nominator's rationale: Template that has outlived its usefulness. When it was created in 2005, the stub sorting system wasn't as developed as it is now, and thus it was needed for a lot of countries that didn't have their own dedicated stub templates or categories yet — but in 2023, there's now a much more thoroughly built out tree of subcategories at the by-country or by-continent levels, meaning that no politician on earth is ever undiffusable into a more specific subcategory anymore. Now, any use of this template is inherently an error that always needs to be (and always can be) replaced with a more specific "Country-politician-stub" or "Continent-politician-stub" template, meaning that just "politician-stub" simply isn't ever necessary anymore. (For example, earlier today I found about seven or eight articles directly using this template, every single one of which was a state legislator from the United States who should have had [USState]-politician-stub instead of this.)
Note that I'm not proposing the deletion of the category, which is still needed as a container for all the relevant subcategories — but the template should be deleted as it's never in any need of direct use in its own right anymore, and the category should be strictly a container parent with no direct entries of its own. Bearcat (talk) 18:04, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
CFD is where stub template discussions come. It doesn't matter if you understand why — I don't understand why either — but stub template discussions come to CFD regardless of whether the associated category is proposed for deletion or not. Even if it's not supposed to be that way, Twinkle automatically posts an XFD discussion on a stub template to CFD by default — so if that's wrong, it's a Twinkle problem, not a Bearcat problem. Bearcat (talk) 19:46, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • The rationale probably is that anything related to stub categories goes to CfD. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:10, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough. I just hadn't seen it before. Cheers, Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 20:40, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • To be fair, WP:TFD does say that stub template-plus-category discussions should come here while stub template-only discussions should be held there, but Twinkle does seem to not actually make that distinction, and automatically posts template-only discussions here (it isn't the first time I've seen it.) There should perhaps be some discussion or clarification to make sure everybody's actually on the same page about what's desired and any necessary adjustments to either the TFD statement or Twinkle code are made, but that's obviously tangential to whether this specific template is warranted or not and would be more appropriately held elsewhere. Bearcat (talk) 22:42, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nom. Nederlandse Leeuw (talk) 20:41, 7 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment the rationale assumes that all editors know that this particular stub template has more refined versions in continent-level and that the missing country-level stubs would then use such. I don't think that that many editors would know of such, if they don't regularly write politician stubs. Thus, it would be good to keep the template around for stub-sorting wikignomes to replace with more specific ones, instead of not tagging the stub in the first place. -- 64.229.90.172 (talk) 06:04, 11 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Grutness: as a stub expert, please can you advise whether this would matter for the hierarchy shown at e.g. Template:UK-politician-stub, i.e.
Stub hierarchy
  • UK-politician-stub
  • Politician-stub
  • Stub?
Fayenatic London 20:04, 15 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
    • Yes, it would, and would cause problems with other stub templates being marked as needing attention because of it. If it were deleted it would need to be recreated almost immediately. It's also common practice to keep what seem like redundant templates like this because not everyone can have a full knowledge of the thousands of possible stub templates. any people help by just moving a stub one link up the chain, so if they see aan article for a politician just marked with {{bio-stub}}, they'll just move it one step up the chain to a less broad type like {{politician-stub}}. The OP themselves made it clear that this is regularly happening. It's also, like many other stub templates on the same level, incompletely divided into countries. There's little need, say, for a Tokelau-politician-stub or a Pitcairn-politician-stub, so any tiny number of articles which could use such stubs are simply double-stubbed with politician-stub and a national stub. As such, very strong keep (it may even qualify for procedural keep). Grutness...wha? 04:09, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Both Tokelau and Pitcairn wouldfall under {{Oceania-politician-stub}}, and thus aren't tagged with this either. It's true that not every country on earth has its own dedicated stub template or category, but even the countries that don't have those things still absolutely always fall under continent-wide regional templates and categories that do exist, such as Asia and Europe and Oceania — so absolutely no country on earth ever needs this, because there's not a single country on earth that isn't resortable to at least the "African, Asian, European, North American, Oceanian or South American" level.
And there are lots of cleanup tasks that people shouldn't have to take any time to clean up, not because it isn't important to clean them up but because it genuinely shouldn't even be possible to make the mess that needs to be cleaned up in the first place. Cleaning user and draft pages out of mainspace categories, for instance, is a boring and stupid job that nobody should ever have to spend any time on at all — but the solution to that isn't to decide that such pages are allowed to pollute mainspace categories now, it;s finding ways to render it impossible for user and draft pages to be appearing in mainspace categories, so that nobody has to clean a mess up because there isn't a mess getting made in the first place. The real, proper solution to redlinked categories, similarly, isn't "somebody goes through a list of redlinked categories twice a week to remove or create them as needed" — it should really be "make it impossible to add a redlinked category to an article at all, so that there are never any redlinked categories to get cleaned up". And this is like that: if a container category always needs to be emptied out every time it has anything added to it, then the solution isn't to monitor the category and clean it out every time it has anything added to it — it's to render it impossible for anything to be added to it so that nobody needs to clean up a mess because there's never any mess to be cleaned up in the first place.
And one doesn't have to memorize the entire category tree in order to function, because the beauty of the category tree is that it's visible and browsable. So if you don't know where in the Category:Politician stubs tree to place a politician, you don't have to memorize the entire tree for future reference because you can look at the tree to see what the options are. Bearcat (talk) 11:47, 19 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: merge/delete this tree. Note that while 2007 and 2008 both have 5 articles, it's beneficial for the entire tree to be upmerged since most years only have 2-3 articles and the years are sparse. If this tree becomes more consistently populated in the future on a yearly basis, then there is no objection to recreation, but right now we don't need it; the parent categories more than suffice. –Aidan721 (talk) 02:58, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: As per WP:SMALLCAT. Only 1 entry and unlikely to grow. LibStar (talk) 00:48, 2 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
