Denmark–Latvia relations refers to the bilateral relationship between Denmark and Latvia. Denmark has an embassy in Riga.[1] Latvia has an embassy in Copenhagen.[2] Both countries are members of the European Union and NATO.
Denmark recognized Latvia on 7 February 1921, and diplomatic relations were established on 27 August 1991.[3] On 3 November 1924, a Treaty of Commerce and Navigation was signed.[4] On 28 August 1930, an agreement on reciprocal extradition was signed.[5]
Denmarks export amounted 1 billion DKK, and Latvian export amounted 1,6 billion DKK. Denmark is the third largest foreign investor in Latvia, just after Estonia and Sweden.[6]
In 1992, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, visited Latvia and the other Baltic states, Estonia and Lithuania.[7] On 27 August 2001, Mogens Lykketoft visited Riga to support Latvias membership in the European Union.[8] Foreign Minister of Latvia, Ģirts Valdis Kristovskis visited Denmark 19 January 2011, to meet Foreign Minister of Denmark, Lene Espersen. The Ministers discussed Afghanistan, the Lisbon treaty and the situation in Belarus.[9] Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and Latvia condemned the detention of opposition politicians in Belarus together.[10]
