Notes

  1. ^ On June 16, 2017, American singer Katy Perry became the first account to exceed 100 million followers.[2]
  2. ^ On July 12, 2018, Twitter purged locked accounts—those disabled due to suspicious activity—from follower-count tallies.[3] Consequently, Twitter's own account took the fastest and greatest plunge out of all the top 50 accounts, from 63 million to 55 million followers, and in ranking, from 11th to 16th place.[4]
  3. ^ On February 3, 2019, American singer Demi Lovato deleted her Twitter account after facing backlash on the platform. At the time, she was the 14th most-followed account, with over 57 million followers.[5] On January 14, 2020, she had reactivated her account and started tweeting again under the new name, "Team Demi".[6] In July 2020, her account was changed back to "@ddlovato".
  4. ^ On January 8, 2021, then-U.S. president Donald Trump was permanently suspended by Twitter, following the 2021 storming of the United States Capitol. Twitter cited its violent threats policy in removing Trump's account, claiming his profile showed a "risk of further incitement of violence."[7] At the time, he was the sixth most-followed account, with over 88 million followers.
