Province No. 1 is a Province of Nepal. It is located in Easternmost part of Nepal. It is surrounded by Tibet of China from North, Sikkim and north part of West Bengal of India from East, Bihar of India from South and Province No. 3 of Nepal from West. Province No. 2 is located in West-south.

Previously, Province No. 1 was a Development region of Nepal. It was named Eastern Development Region. It had 16 districts and 3 Zones. Districts were subdivided into Municipalities and Villages.

Administrative structure

Judiciary

High court

Biratnagar High Court (Nepali: बिराटनगर उच्च अदालत) is the high court of Province No. 1. The high court established according to the new constitution of Nepal. Article 139 of the constitution says “there shall be a High Court in each state”. Article 300 (3) : The High Courts set forth in Article 139 shall be established no later than one year after the date of commencement of this Constitution. The Appellate Courts existing at the time of commencement of this Constitution shall be dissolved after the establishment of such Courts. [2]

Government of Nepal transformed the existing appellate courts in Biratnagar on 14 September 2016. As per the government decision, there will be extended benches in Illam, Dhankuta and Okhaldhunga under the high court in Biratnagar. [3]

Tej Bahadur KC has been appointed as the chief judge of Biratnagar High Court in Province 1.[4]

Pradesh Sabha of Province No. 1 is the unicameral legislative assembly.[5]

Constituency

As per the CDC (Constituency Delimitation Commission) report, Province No-1 shall have 56 constituencies (provincial seats) under the FPtP (First-Past-the-Post).[6]
