Gulripshi (Georgian: გულრიფში, [gulripʰʃi]; Abkhaz: Гәылрыҧшь, Gwylryphsh; Russian: Гульрыпш, Gulrypsh) is an urban settlement in Abkhazia.[Note 1] It is located 12 km from Sukhumi, and is the capital of Gulripshi district.

Nikolay Smetskoy built three sanatoria in Gulripsh between 1902 and 1913 for patients with pulmonary diseases and founded several parks with subtropical plants.[2] After the Russian Revolution the sanatoria were nationalised.

  1. ^ Abkhazia's status is disputed. It considers itself to be an independent state, but this is recognised by only a few other countries. The Georgian government and most of the world's other states consider Abkhazia de jure a part of Georgia's territory. In Georgia's official subdivision it is an autonomous republic, whose government sits in exile in Tbilisi.
