"Prior to construction by the WMATA, Franconia–Springfield station was the site of Franconia Station, a standard railroad station built by the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad. No Amtrak service[edit]

Amtrak appears to have dropped Franconia-Springfield. I can't find a good source, but it no longer shows up as a bookable option and it's not on the Spring/Summer 2010 timetable. Mackensen (talk) 21:51, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I can't find a good source for it, either. I've gone ahead and commented out all the Amtrak stuff in the infobox for now, because the text doesn't discuss Amtrak, and so it's a fairly easy removal. Once we get a firm source, we can remove the Amtrak stuff entirely, but it is difficult to prove a negative... SchuminWeb (Talk) 23:19, 7 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Amtrak still has a page for the station, but it's not showing up anywhere else on the website. I hid the category for Former Amtrak stations just in case you two are right, and if you are, I don't think it's "past" service to Amtrak should be eliminated from the article. ----DanTD (talk) 18:05, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, we could. We could mention that it was also an Amtrak station between 1997 and 2010, especially if we can find an exact date in which Amtrak terminated service there. Aside from this, what I'd also like to do is find out if this was a replacement for some old run down Richmond, Fredericksburg & Potomac station that existed in the area, even if it was torn down a few decades before this station was built. ----DanTD (talk) 19:12, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict)(Really)Amtrak still has a page for Franconia Springfield, and this (Large PDF) says that Amtrak got stimulus funds and recently makde changes at that station. As for the old stations, It appears that the RF&P Built a station they called Franconia near the metro stop in 1870 and discontinued service and tore the station down in 1952 (See this and this) Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 21:30, 13 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fiftytwo thirty, one of those links was great. I just added the TrainWeb link to the RF&P page a few minutes agon. Have not abandoned the RF&P article - as for the old question - I don't believe the Franconia station was still a stop when Amtrak took over; it's physical location is north of the Franconia/Springfield stop by a half-mile or mile or so. Where F/S is where the Franconia/Springfield Parkway crosses the tracks, the old Franconia station was just north of the Franconia Road overpass. Relantel (talk) 16:58, 6 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The question still lingers[edit]

The issue of if and when Amtrak dropped service at Franconia-Springfield still remains unanswered. If nobody has considered doing so themselves, I might even go so far as to calling Amtrak on the phone and asking them about this. ----DanTD (talk) 14:42, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I thought about but it wouldn't be verifiable unless we somehow convinced Amtrak to issue a statement. They've definitely dropped service; the station is no longer listed on the timetable and you can't book a trip to/from it. Mackensen (talk) 23:18, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so a phone call it out of the question. How about an e-mail? Whatever their reply is, we can always use that as a source. Incidentally, 5230 mentioned something about the station getting stimulus funds as an active Amtrak station, and we both pointed out that Amtrak still has a page for the station. Maybe we could just find some of the old timetables to use as sources for the first/last time that Amtrak stopped there based on when they went into effect. (Which seems to be a better citation than an email) The Stimulus funds may have been in some way related to Amtrak operating VRE, particularly since Crystal City is also on that list. On a side note, the VRE Schedule says that various Amtrak trains stop at L'Enfant Plaza -- which does not seem to be an Amtrak station. --Fiftytwo thirty (talk) 03:14, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No, since I don't have any timetables that are recent enough. The newest timetable I have is from Fall 2005-Winter 2006. I wrote an e-mail to Amtrak on September 16, and they told me "We respond to online inquiries 7 days a week between the hours of 8 am and 11 pm (ET). You can expect a response to your inquiry within the next 24 hours. Please do not reply to this message." More confusion[edit]

Okay, this is getting odd; I just found out that Amtrak's pamphlet still lists Franconia-Springfield as of May 10, 2010( http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/BlobServer?blobcol=urldata&blobtable=MungoBlobs&blobkey=id&blobwhere=1249213945162&blobheader=application%2Fpdf&blobheadername1=Content-disposition&blobheadervalue1=attachment;filename=Amtrak_T04.pdf), as a stop for the Carolinian, but they don't have it on their list of stations for the Carolinain/Piedmont, nor the rest of the Silver Service/Palmetto, despite still having a page for the station. As long as we're going by how Metro names these stations, it actually is "Potomac Ave", not "Potomac Avenue", just as we don't spell out the acronyms used for universities (e.g., Tenleytown–AU Station). See also the pictures on the relevant article. --BDD (talk) 14:24, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per nom with "Station" capitalized as the signs at the stations do. Would greatly prefer "Washington Metro" as a disambiguator to "WMATA" or "Virginia" which are far less helpful to readers seeking the correct article.
