Orphaned references in Nathan Chen

[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Nathan Chen's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "ISU-2122":

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 20:16, 17 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Since recent comments on gays in skating and subsequent coverage, should be a section on that. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.181.193.59 (talk) 07:28, 11 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

List of career achievements

[edit]

List of career achievements by Nathan Chen has been moved to main space. Main article to be de-cluttered. Hope to prepare main article for GAN when we get a bit closer to Boston Worlds 2025 and the list for potential FLC when we get closer to Boston Worlds 2025. Editing the lead section

[edit]

Hello! I'm working to copyedit this article for a GOCE request, and working to get its prose to GA level. The lead section of this article is 5 paragraphs, including a last paragraph that is only one sentence. Per the manual of style, "a lead section should contain no more than four well-composed paragraphs". All of the paragraphs other than the fifth are very long, and I'm going to need to cut a good amount of stuff and put it into the main body of the article. Before I do anything major, I'd like to know if people who have contributed to the article have any opinions on how I should incorporate the last paragraph into the other paragraphs, and what information absolutely needs to stay in the lead. Aiue (talk) 16:36, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

There, I fixed the last paragraph for you. It doesn't feel awkward that those could be listed among his other accomplishments. Bgsu98 (Talk) 16:52, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Aiue (talk) 16:54, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for doing this! :)
The first paragraph is pretty standard to all figure skating articles and should probably remain intact.
The second paragraph is very long so everything from "Age 17.." to the end of the paragraph can probably be trimmed a lot or cut. It might also only be necessary to mention that he was the first to land 5 quadruple jumps and cut everything about the 6 and 8 listed later in the lead.
As for awards and lists, I think only Laureus, ISU and Time 100 are necessary. I don't have any opinion about how to incorporate the last sentence about the books.
Thanks again! MovieTalk101178 (talk) 16:54, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I had no idea there was a wikiproject for figure skating, and I'm probably going to join it soon. It's fun to learn more about Chen as I edit this one, as despite being a figure skater I really don't keep up with the news other than watching clips of the olympics.
Thoughts on me removing the fact he's an author from the lead per WP:HOBBY? Also, I seem to have miscounted the number of paragraphs in the lead, I'm viewing the article on paper and there's a page break halfway through the second paragraph. Thanks for the input! Aiue (talk) 16:59, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think we should follow the manual of style as much as possible so it's fine to remove from the lead. MovieTalk101178 (talk) 17:01, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I see nothing wrong with removing it from the lede. Bgsu98 (Talk) 18:57, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hey there, don’t worry about cite errors. I’ll fix afterwards. I have them all after archiving them a few months ago. :) MovieTalk101178 (talk) 06:05, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
ok cool! thank you! Aiue (talk) 14:47, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Just to clarify, does "Chen made history at the 2016 U.S. Championships by becoming the first U.S. man to land two quadruple jumps in a short program[1] as well as four quadruple jumps in a long program." mean he was the first man to both land two quads in a short program and four quads in a long program, or were the two quads in the short and four in the long two separate achievements? Aiue (talk) 15:52, 24 May 2023 (UTC) Aiue (talk) 15:52, 24 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Aiue Two separate achievements. Bgsu98 (Talk) 16:15, 24 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What's the best way to explain popping a jump to a non-skater?

[edit]

"despite popping two planned jumps in the free skate." I'm pretty sure that the usage of 'pop' here is limited to figure skating, but I'm not sure how to make it clear that Chen accidentally did two singles instead of the intended jumps without making the sentence overly wordy. Anyone have any ideas? Aiue (talk) 14:18, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

These articles are full of technical jargon or slang terms that non-FS fans are not familiar with. Popping describes a situation where the skater is taking off to do a multi-rotation jump, but at the last second, they suddenly do only a single rotation. Bgsu98 (Talk) 14:59, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Some items to note as you're editing these FS articles. Axel, Lutz, and Salchow are all capitalized (as proper nouns), while toe loop, loop, and flip are not. Also, it's "toe loop", not "toe". That bugs me more than it probably should, but this is not a FS fan magazine. Bgsu98 (Talk) 15:41, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
got it! do you happen to know what I should be standardizing 'free skate' and 'long program'? Aiue (talk) 18:08, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Technically, there is no such thing as a "long program." It's "short program" and "free skate." Bgsu98 (Talk) 18:22, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Social media cites and WP:BLPSPS

[edit]

There are several cites like, "Javier, Fernandez (August 23, 2023). "#jfsummercamp2023 Thanks to everyone for making this possible one more year". Instagram. Archived from the original on September 10, 2023. Retrieved September 10, 2023." This is inadmissible because you are not allowed to cite a self published source for BLP content unless it is ABOUTSELF.

Another question is why does this article need to cite social media at all? If there are no secondary sources what makes it wp:due? (t · c) buidhe 19:53, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the late reply. I just saw this. The article has been revised according to your note. MovieTalk101178 (talk) 18:59, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am planning on reviewing this article for GA Status, over the next couple of days. Thank you for nominating the article for GA status. I hope I will learn some new information, and that my feedback is helpful.

If nominators or editors could refrain from updating the particular section that I am updating until it is complete, I would appreciate it to remove a edit conflict. Please address concerns in the section that has been completed above (If I've raised concerns up to references, feel free to comment on things like the lede.)

I generally provide an overview of things I read through the article on a first glance. Then do a thorough sweep of the article after the feedback is addressed. After this, I will present the pass/failure. I may use strikethrough tags when concerns are met. Even if something is obvious why my concern is met, please leave a message as courtesy.

Best of luck! you can also use the {{done}} tag to state when something is addressed. Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs)

Please let me know after the review is done, if you were happy with the review! Obviously this is regarding the article's quality, however, I want to be happy and civil to all, so let me know if I have done a good job, regardless of the article's outcome.
