The Amazing Race 13 was the 13th installment of the reality television competition series The Amazing Race. It featured 11 teams of two, each with a preexisting relationship, in a race around the world.

The series was part of the fall line-up for 2008-09 season and premiered Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT starting on September 28, 2008 and ended on December 7, 2008.[1][2]An additional team, Babano and Santo, were on the show, but the leg they were in went unaired. You can see Babano at the Starting Line.

Production

Development and filming

CBS had originally planned to only air one installment of The Amazing Race (Season 12) in the 2007-08 season, but due to the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike, CBS ordered a 13th installment as a replacement for programs affected by the strike.[3] CBS greenlit the 13th installment on December 9, 2007.[4] Race locations were scouted in January 2008 and filming took place between April and May 2008.[5][6][7]

Filming for the The Amazing Race 13 lasted for 23 days and covered nearly 40,000 miles. The season spanned eight countries in five continents, and visited some far-flung locales never before seen on the show, including Bolivia, Cambodia, and Kazakhstan. Brazil, New Zealand, India, and Russia were also listed as race destinations.[8][9][10] This is only the second Race to circumnavigate the world westward (The Amazing Race 10 was the first).

This was the first Race in which an eliminated team was absent from the Finish Line to cheer on the final 3 teams, as Dallas (of Toni & Dallas) had misplaced his passport and the team's money in Russia on the penultimate leg.[11] This had been hinted at in promotional materials aired before the Race began, where CBS revealed that one team made "an unprecedented mistake that ultimately prohibit[ed] them from joining their fellow Racers at the finish line."[12] In a post-Race interview, Dallas revealed that the loss of the passport and money was partly caused by the changing of a microphone battery by production. The passport was eventually turned in to the U.S. Embassy in Russia, but it was still too late for him and his mother to join their fellow racers at the finish line.[11] Starr revealed in a post-race interview that Toni and Dallas joined the other racers in Portland, Oregon at a party the night following the end of the race. [13]

Post-race interviews revealed that Starr and Dallas – who competed on opposing teams – have been long-distance dating for six months since the show completed taping.[11][13]

Andrew & Dan stated in an post-race interview that the second U-Turn was available on Leg 9 but it was not used by any teams, thus it was not aired in the show.[14]

Cast

Applications for The Amazing Race 13 were due on November 27, 2007. Semi-finalist interviews were held in December 2007 and January 2008 and final casting interviews took place in February 2008, in Los Angeles, California.

The cast featured a pair of fraternity brothers, a team of married hippies, and a retired NFL player hoping to reconnect with his estranged wife while on the Race.[9]

The show also featured John Keoghan, host Phil Keoghan's father, as the local greeter at Te Puke in Keoghan's native New Zealand.[15]

Marketing

CBS heavily promoted the new season, including placing advertising on the top of three hangar buildings at Los Angeles International Airport prior to the premiere.[16] Unlike other seasons, CBS has provided a location map to viewers of where the Race will be traveling prior to the start of the season.[17]

During this time, Kelly & Christy – the only team trailing them at that point – were able to check in and Mark & Bill were eliminated before the 30 minutes elapsed.
Template:Fnb Terence & Sarah arrived 3rd, but were penalized for speeding. A 30 minute penalty was assessed at the start of the following leg, dropping their placement to 5th. Nick & Starr also received a penalty for speeding on Leg 4 that went unaired because it did not affect their placement.
Template:Fnb Andrew & Dan arrived 4th, but took a taxi to the Pit Stop instead of going on foot. They were asked to go back to the end of the Detour and walk back to the Pit Stop. This did not affect their placement.
Template:Fnb Ken & Tina arrived 3rd, but had missed the clue directing them to the Pit Stop, having arrived there by chance while searching for the clue. They were asked to go back and retrieve their missed clue at the end of the Detour and return to the Pit Stop. This did not affect their placement.
Template:FnbToni & Dallas were initially denied their clue at the Detour starting point for taking the Metro instead of a taxi, and were required to go back to the end of the Roadblock and return to the Detour starting point via taxi. After all the other teams had checked in at the Pit Stop, Phil eliminated them while they were still performing the Detour.

  • Red means the team was eliminated.
  • Green means the team won the Fast Forward clue. A green-colored leg number indicates that the Fast Forward was available for that leg but not used.
  • An underlined Blue team's placement means the team came in last on a non-elimination leg and had to perform a Speed Bump task in the following leg.
  • A brown » means the team chose to use a U-Turn; « indicates the team who received it; «» indicates a leg where the U-Turn was available but not used.

Elimination Station

The first five teams eliminated were sequestered at a villa in Acapulco, Mexico to await the finale. Subsequent eliminated teams telephoned the villa to inform the teams at the villa of their elimination, but continued to run the race as decoys to throw off spoilers to the final outcome of the race. The sequestered teams met up with the decoy teams in the final destination city to cheer on the final three teams as they crossed the Finish Line, with the exception of Toni & Dallas, who were still stuck in Russia after their elimination due to the loss of Dallas' passport.

CBS posted short videos on its website after each episode aired in the Pacific Time Zone to show the eliminated teams interacting at the villa.

  • After Leg 1, Anita & Arthur were the first team eliminated and were sent to the villa first. They expressed their disappointment for being eliminated so early but were also appreciative of their surroundings and grateful that they could live in the lap of luxury in the villa.
  • After Leg 2, Anthony & Stephanie were the second team eliminated and were sent to the villa next. Anita & Arthur were surprised but excited that it was them and Anthony & Stephanie felt welcomed by Anita & Arthur and felt less depressed over their own elimination. Over a meal, they predicted that Terence & Sarah will win the race. The two teams then went out of the villa and enjoyed the sights and sounds of Acapulco.
  • After Leg 3, Mark & Bill became the third team eliminated and sent to the villa. They were glad that the two teams there were shocked and saddened to hear that they were eliminated. As they retold their story on how they were eliminated, they found Mexican wrestling masks in their room in the villa. The 3 teams were later brought, at night, to a luchadore exhibition where Anthony & Stephanie had a lack of interest and left earlier to roam the streets instead.
  • After Leg 4, Marisa & Brooke were the fourth team eliminated and were sent to the villa. They were excited on how lavish the villa was. They then discussed what happened in New Zealand before all 4 teams went into town and Anthony, Stephanie and Bill did a bungee jump as the others watched on.
  • After Leg 5, Aja & Ty became the fifth team eliminated and sent to the villa. But before they arrived, the first 4 eliminated teams went to the market and then prepared their own lunch to celebrate the arrival of the fifth team. The teams were surprised that it was Aja & Ty, who filled them in on what has happened in the race. After the meal, Anthony did not offer to help clean up, leaving Stephanie embarrassed. Meanwhile, Ty feels awkward to not be on the race and predicts that Andrew & Dan will be the next team eliminated.
  • Leg 6 was a non-elimination leg. The five eliminated teams went to the beach where they encountered a weird individual who staged a "performance" for the teams in the ocean. There were mixed reactions from the teams with Anita being thrilled and filled with admiration while Ty was having difficulty understanding the different lifestyle of the people in Mexico.
  • After Leg 7, Kelly & Christy were the sixth team eliminated but were not sent to the villa. They called in during the wee hours of Acapulco where the first five eliminated teams awaited their call. They recalled their horrifying "Holi Festival" Roadblock experience and gave them an update on what had happened on the race.
  • After Leg 8, Terence & Sarah were the seventh team eliminated but were not sent to the villa. Before the phone call, the eliminated teams went to "La Quebrada" to see cliffdivers jumping down to the sea. After that, they gave opinions on who will be eliminated next. Most of them thought it was Andrew & Dan. They were all shocked when Terence & Sarah called in as several teams were rooting for them.
  • Leg 9 was a non-elimination leg. While Aja & Ty have a minor tiff with each other, Marisa & Brooke struggle to make toast. Anthony starts complaining about how slow time is passing in the Villa. All in all, most of the sequestered teams reveal that they are missing home and are eager to return to their normal lives. Most of them also predict and want Toni & Dallas and Ken & Tina to win the race.
  • After Leg 10, Toni & Dallas were the eighth and final team to be eliminated. The first five eliminated teams packed up to head for the Finish Line location. As they packed to leave the villa, each team recalled their experience with each other at the villa and expressed their excitement for returning home soon.
  • Leg 11 was the final leg of The Amazing Race 13. The five sequestered teams arrived in Portland, Oregon, where they checked in to a hotel which is close to the Finish Line site and reunited with Terence & Sarah first. The eliminated teams were waiting for a phone call to see who was eliminated. Toni & Dallas then called the six teams at the hotel, breaking the news that they had been eliminated and would most likely not be joining them at the Finish Line due to their passport mishap. The teams then went to the Finish Line site, where they reunited with Kelly & Christy, and some of the teams again expressed who they wanted to win. Mark & Bill were hoping that it would be Ken & Tina that would win the Amazing Race but they figure it was Nick & Starr that won the Amazing Race. Nick & Starr express their joy and disbelief at winning the Race, while Ken & Tina express their disappointment but vow to make their marriage work. Andrew & Dan express their elation at making it to third place.

Leg 1 (United States → Brazil)

The Detour was a choice between Hard Way Up or Soft Way Down. In Hard Way Up, teams emulated a religious ceremony by climbing the Escadaria do Passo on their hands and knees. At the top, teams were asked a mystery question (How many stairs have you climbed?). Teams would receive their next clue by answering correctly; if they answered incorrectly, they had to climb the staircase again. The correct answer was 53. In Soft Way Down, teams had to go to the top of the Elevador Lacerda Template:Pt icon (an outdoor elevator) and climb down a 240-foot-tall cargo net.

Additional tasks
  • At o Rei do Pernil, teams had to wheel a traditional vending cart to Praça da Sé in order to receive their next clue.

Leg 2 (Brazil)

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member must find the name of their next destination on an advertisement painted on the wall of the park.

Leg 3 (Brazil → Bolivia)

Upon arriving in La Paz, teams spent the night in front of the statue of Simón Bolívar

The Detour was a choice between Musical March or Bumpy Ride. In Musical March, team had to make their way on foot to two plazas several blocks apart where they needed to gather and lead a marching band through the city to a band leader. Then they had to make their way to Plaza Abaroa and exchange the band members for their next clue. In Bumpy Ride, teams had to make their way on foot to Mercado de las Brujas where they had to ride a traditional wooden bicycle down in a harrowing, bone rattling trip down cobblestone streets to Plaza Abaroa to receive their next clue. In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to learn six wrestling moves from luchadoras called the Fighting Cholitas (cholitas luchadoras). After performing these moves in the ring, they were given their next clue. If they fail at performing the move, they have to go back and train with the Fighting Cholita again before returning to the ring.

Additional tasks
  • At the statue of Simón Bolívar, teams had to get a newspaper and search it for their next clue.
  • At the hat shop, teams had to buy a traditional bowler hat called a bombin to get their next clue. Teams were advised to hold on to their hat so that they may hand it to their Fighting Cholita as a gift later in the Roadblock.

Leg 4 (Bolivia → New Zealand)

Additional tasks
  • At Gulf Harbour, teams had to untie a large "Gordian Knot" to get their next clue.
  • At the City Life Hotel, teams had to use binoculars to spot one of eight Travelocity Roaming Gnomes hidden around the city. They then had to retrieve them and bring them to the Pit Stop.

Leg 5 (New Zealand → Cambodia)

Angkor Wat was the venue for Leg 5's Roadblock where teams had to look for a specific echo chamber.

The Detour was a choice between Village Life or Village Work. In Village Life, teams had to retrieve a set of toy teeth from a dentist, a doll from a tailor, and a basketball from a floating basketball court all on Tonlé Sap. Each team member had to score a basket before returning all the items they had collected to the Siem Reap Harbor. In Village Work, teams had to go into Tonlé Sap and retrieve two full baskets of fish and return them to the Siem Reap Harbor on Tonlé Sap. In this leg's Roadblock, teams had to go into Angkor Wat and find an Echo Chamber where they had to beat their chest to hear the echo. They could then pick up a stone frieze displaying their next clue on the reverse.

Additional tasks
  • When first arriving in Siem Reap, teams had to fill a truck with 25 liters (6.6 U.S. gal) of diesel fuel and then ride the truck to Siem Reap Harbor on Tonlé Sap, the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Teams then rode a marked boat to the boat stop Kho Andeth for their next clue.

Leg 6 (Cambodia → India)

The Roadblock required the selected team member to paint an environmentally friendly natural gas-powered tuktuk green.

In this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to repaint black portions of a tuk tuk green, to show that the tuk tuks had switched to using natural gas as fuel. To paint it green, the team member had to cover up all of the glass and wheels of the tuk tuk before spray painting. The Detour for this leg of the race was a choice between Launder Money or Launder Clothes. In Launder Money, teams had to make a traditional Indian wedding necklace by stapling ten rupee notes to the necklace that added up to Rs780, and then they have to find their way to find the newlywed couple in the banquet hall under the chaotic crowds and present them the traditional necklace to receive their next clue. In Launder Clothes, teams had to use a traditional charcoal iron to press 20 pieces of clothing in order to receive their next clue from a laundry woman.

Leg 7 (India)

Humayun's Tomb was the seventh pit stop of The Amazing Race 13
  • New Delhi (Deshbandhu Apartments) Roadblock: ""Who's ready for a colorful experience?""
  • Delhi (Jain Temple - Charity Birds Hospital) Detour: Bleary Eyed or Teary Eyed Speed Bump: Serve Holy Water (Sikh Temple- Sri Gurudwara Shiskhunj Sahib)

They then report these numbers to a power official and plug in a musical Ganesh statue to receive their next clue. In Teary Eyed, teams had to transport 40-pound (18 kg) bags of chili peppers to a location a quarter of a mile away and then grind them into chili powder with a mortar and pestle to receive their next clue. The Speed Bump task required one team to serve holy water to hundreds of Sikhs at a temple until they satisfied the waiting crowd.

Additional task
  • At the Charity Bird Hospital, teams had to search the bird cages to find the next clue.

Leg 8 (India → Kazakhstan)

At the Kok Tobe Arch, teams received their next clue from a trained eagle.

The Roadblock required one team member from each team to search among 30,000 chickens for one of seven golden eggs. The last Fast Forward on this race had teams travel to a restaurant and eat Korduk, a local Kazakh delicacy, which includes fat from the rear end of a sheep. The Detour was a choice between Play Like Mad or Act Like Fools. In Play Like Mad, teams had travel to the State Museum of National Musical Instruments and learn to play a traditional folk tune on the dombra and the shang-kobuz which they then play for locals and earn a tips totalling an equivalent of $1.50 (around 180 tenge) in a park to receive their next clue. In Act Like Fools, teams had to put on a two-person cow costume at a puppet theater and travel across town to a milk stand and drink an entire glass of milk. At the bottom of the glass was the name of their next destination - the Zaloney (Green) Bazaar; they should receive their next clue in the meat section there. They then had to bring either the dombra or the cow costume head with them to the Pit Stop.

Additional task

In this leg's Roadblock, teams had to carry fifty 55-pound (25 kg) bags of flour into the bakery and lay them down on the floor to receive their next clue from the baker.

Additional task
  • At the Krutitsy Monastery, teams had to light a candle before they could receive their next clue. All women were required to don headscarves prior to entering the monastery as per the monastery's religious customs.

Leg 10 (Russia)

At Leg 10's Roadblock, racers had to count the number of statues for Lenin and Stalin (shown) at the Fallen Monument Park.

The Roadblock was to count the number of Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin statues in the park, then proceed to a local bookstore. The numbers of Lenin and Stalin statues were to be the tens and ones digits, respectively, of a number that they then had to tell the bookstore manager; if incorrect, a 10 minute penalty would be assessed before another guess could be made. If correct, the team member would receive a copy of The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, and flip to the page of the correct answer (62) to find a clue about their next destination - Bulgakov's flat - where their teammate and next clue would be waiting. The Detour was a choice between Ride the Rails or Ride the Lines. In Ride the Rails, teams had to travel by the Moscow Metro from Sokolniki to Ulitsa 1905 Goda where they could pick up a samosa from a marked snack stand. The wrapper directed them to go to Kitay-Gorod and give the samsa to a babushka near the statue of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Slavyanskaya Square. In Ride the Lines, teams had to travel by trolleybus from Sokolniki to Krasnoselskaya Station to find a key maker who would give them a key. The keytag directed them to Rizhskaya Station where their key would open up a locker. At the end of both Detours, teams received a photo of the VDNKh Metro Station and were told to search the grounds of the station to find their next clue. This leg's Speed Bump required one team to learn, and then perform a traditional Russian dance to the satisfaction of the choreographer.

Additional task
  • Teams had to search the submarine amongst the crew members for the actor who appeared in the film The Hunt for Red October.

Leg 11 (Russia → United States)

The Pittock Mansion was the Finish Line for this season of The Amazing Race.

In this Detour, teams chose from either High & Dry or Low & Wet. In High & Dry, teams had to climb up a tree to a certain height where they had to balance themselves on a log which they moved to the end of to jump and each grab a half of their next clue. In Low & Wet, teams had to make their way on foot on logs floating on the river, a distance of 800 feet and retrieve the clue from an island.

Additional tasks
  • Teams took a zipline from the Bridge of the Gods to a nearby island below. At the island, teams then did a memory challenge involving the previous ten legs. Teams were faced with a board with spaces numbered 1-10, each corresponding to a leg of the race. They were required to remove the covers from the spaces one at a time, in numerical order, to reveal the symbol of a Roadblock, Detour, Route Info, or Pit Stop, then search through a field of 150 identical clue boxes – each of which contained a picture depicting a task or location from the Race – for a picture depicting that specific task or location from that leg (for example, Leg 1 revealed the Route Info symbol, so teams had to look for a picture depicting the coffee cart at o Rei do Pernil). They were then required to insert the picture into the space on the board, where a green light on top of the space indicated that the picture was the correct one, and absence of a green light indicated they had to try again. Once all 10 spaces were correctly filled in, teams were allowed to retrieve the next clue from the parking lot.
  • At the Portland Building, teams were required to search for a dinosaur statue located in the Standard Building, adjacent to the Portland building, where the next clue box was located.
  • At the Alder Street cart pod, teams were required to search for the food cart selling ethnic food of the country of the last Pit Stop (Russia), where the proprietor would hand them the next clue.
  • The clue given at the Alder Street cart pod directed teams to the place where "the magic is in the hole", and left it to the teams to decipher that this was a reference to Voodoo Doughnut.
