3 July is the birthday of Leoš Janáček, and I'm happy I had a meaningful DYK in 2021 which was about a woman ;) - It's also the birthday of Franz Kafka, and I uploaded pics from his family's album seen in Berlin. Libuše Domanínská, the subject of yesterday's story, would have turned 100 today, but I missed that ;) - Overnight, Tamara Milashkina became GA and Lando Bartolini went to the Main page. I made my story about his almost unbelievable career, from Luigi in Il tabarro in Philadelphia in 1968 (with a nod to Liberty) up to Calaf in Turandot in Beijing in 1999 ;) - 4 July is also the birthday of Brian Boulton who was a pioneer of a concise infobox in 2013. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:20, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Yesterday I listened in concert to Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, with Sabine Meyer: a delight. - Today's story is about Ruth Hesse, with a pic in the article only, sadly. I found it difficult to point at a YouTube sample, because yes, her signature roles - the Nurse and Brangäne - exist in great full-length operas with great casts, but hard to find her. - Talking of YouTube: today I was pointed at Elijah by a friend who performed in the concert of the Dessoff Choirs in their centenary year, and I'm quite impressed by samples (beginning and No. 32 where I linked it) - enjoy! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:38, 19 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I knew the photo from DYK, but didn't know he took it. - Just a look at music (on my talk) shows remembrance of three people who died, and creating an article or improving one is all I can do. Three are on the Main page today, and three others planned ... - What can you say in 200 chars about a career like Klingenberg's? Yes, but I have this crazy desire to also make it a meaningful introduction of the subject, because millions see the Main page, but only one percent if at all will click, - the others get only that sentence. Another look at music: three women there, - a sad record. The Main page also has a Mozart symphony I love, and my story is a 2016 hook. It was connected not only to Max Reger's death in 1916, remembered then, but also the death of a friend who - and we around him - knew he was dying when he listened to the concert which was his last time leaving home, and music from Reger's Requiem was played for his funeral three months later. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:54, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Here we differ. I wanted something eye-catching enough that the person who made it to the EN-WP mainpage and scrolled to the DYK section, would see my hook and want to click the link. Hey Rosie, hope all is well. I've just finished an article on Elizabeth Harriet Davies, aka Happy Ned. It was fun to write, lots of research to sort it out, but I think in the end I have told her fascinating/tragic story fairly well. I have never had to give an entire poem in an article and so it seemed to me that it needed to be attributed as incorporating an entire text, rather than quoting a sentence. I went to your article from the Pan-American Conference of Women and copied what you did there. I don't know who wrote the articles in the Hampshire Telegraph & Sussex Chronicle or Ally Sloper's Half Holiday, but I looked up the editors of both. Apparently the author= parameter cannot be changed for editor=, so I used author, but added (ed) after the names. Would you look at how I attributed the poems and tell me if I did it correctly? Hm. Difficult one as the causality could go both ways (more viewed articles having more effort put in to find images, and, of course, a featured picture is a guaranteed day on the main page). I suppose the simplest way is to compare after a change of image. Ideally, we'd want changes on this level: any different that isn't noticable in thumbnail would probably have a much more limited effect, and there's a lot of noise in the data. I was taking a look at Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/Archaeologists after some time, and noticed a couple of old edits of yours removing entries that were also on the wikidata list (e.g. [2]). I hadn't realised that the two weren't supposed to overlap. Is there another way to highlight subjects with good potential from the (rather long) wikidata list? – Joe (talk) 13:15, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Joe Roe and thanks for stopping by. That's a good question and something we've grappled with in different ways. No agreement on what's a best practice at Women in Red, so if an editor thinks the name should be on both lists (crowd-sourced and Wikidata-based), particularly if they are linking multiple sources with that name on the crowd-sourced list, it's totally okay. Community Configuration

The Growth team released Community Configuration at all Wikipedias. You can access it at Special:CommunityConfiguration.

This new special page replaces Special:EditGrowthConfig. For now, all Growth features can be configured using Community Configuration. Configuration for AutoModerator (T365046) and other features will be available in the future.

You can help with translations. The interface translation is done at Translatewiki.net. You can also help translate the documentation.

Newcomer Homepage Community Updates module

We will add a new Community Configurable module to the Newcomer Homepage that will allow communities to highlight specific events, projects, campaigns, and initiatives. We have released a simple version available to beta wikis. We will conduct an A/B test at our pilot wikis using the new Metrics Platform. We still welcome community feedback on initial designs and plans, in any language at our project talk page.

Increase constructive activation on mobile

As part of the Growth team 2024/2025 Annual Plan, the Growth team will explore various ways to increase the percentage of newcomers who successfully start editing.

Editing a Wikipedia page requires too much context and patience. It means many trial and error for newcomers to contribute, meaning a steeper learning curve and potential discouraging reverts. To support a new generation of volunteers, we will increase the number and availability of smaller, structured, and more task-specific editing workflows (E.g. Edit Check and Structured Tasks). The Growth team will primarily focus on Structured Tasks, while working closely with the Editing team to ensure our work integrates well with Edit Check.
