Odisha Floods 2022 ( ଓଡିଆ (Odia): - ଓଡ଼ିଶା ବନ୍ୟା ୨୦୨୨ ) was one of the worst floods ever occurred in Odisha in the decade since 2011 which lasted from 14 August 2022 to 07 September 2022. [1]
The main causes of the floods were the extensive rains which started from 3rd week of August 2022, due to the "Depression" which was formed in the Bay of Bengal and the Monsoon rains.[2]
In total 12 districts: - Khordha, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Puri, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur (Sonepur), Bargarh, Angul, Boudh and Sambalpur got affected by the floods the most.[3]
Impact[edit]
On 14 August 2022, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a "Red Alert" of heavy, very heavy and extreme rainfall for 7 districts in Odisha due to the new forming "Depression" in Bay of Bengal.[4]
After that, extensive rainfall got started across many areas of the state by which the water in the Mahanadi river system started to flow at 'Danger Levels".[5]
Meanwhile, the dams in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand were opened due to which the water present in the Hirakud Dam Reservoir was overflowing. Therefore, The Hirakud Dam Authority opened 40 gates to release the excess water from the reservoir.[6][7]
Due to the sudden release of floodwater from the dam, 100 houses in Sambalpur got submerged in the floodwater which were located near to the river course.[7]
The water which was released from the dam flowed further by which the water levels and flow rate of the water in the Mahanadi river system got increased. In addition to the monsoon rains, the situation of the Mahanadi, Brahmani, Baitarani River Systems and other rivers in the state worse.[8]
Again on 17 August 2022, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a "Yellow Alert"
of heavy rainfall for 20 districts and an "Orange Alert" of very heavy rainfall for 17 districts. IMD warned the state government for new forming "Depression" over Bay of Bengal and advised the fishermen not to venture into the sea for fishing as the winds were blowing at a speed of 45-55 km/h.[9]
The low-lying districts in the Mahanadi River Basin like Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khordha, Puri and Kendrapara were flooded with 12 lakh Cusec of floodwater which flowed through these areas in the night of 19 August 2022.[10]
In Jharkhand, the 16 gates of the Galudih Barrage were opened and released 6 lakh cusec of water. Due to which excess water flowed into the Subarnarekha River and flowed further into the Northen districts of Odisha like Balasore and Mayurbhanj and flooded these areas. [11][12]
Heavy rains also occurred in Bhubaneswar due to which the low-lying areas of the city like Sundarpada got submerged by the rain water and many drains, roads and old houses got damaged. [12]
Due to the floods, over 1.2 lakh hectares of crop land got destroyed and damaged. Due to which, the farmers suffered huge losses. Crop lands of Puri, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Boudh and Sonepur districts got affected the most. [13]
Aftermath[edit]
In total around 10 lakh people from 1757 villages got affected, 1.26 lakh hectares of crop land got damaged, ~2.5 lakh people got isolated from rest of the places (Marooned), 7 killed, over 14,000 houses got damaged and destroyed by the floods, 440 relief centers were established and ₹126 crore of Public Property got damaged and destroyed.[14][15][16]
Due to the crop damage, prices of various vegetables in the market got increased noticeably and supply chains of the crop products got affected .[17]
Many Water Borne Diseases got spread across various places of the state. Over 900 cases of Diarrhea and 88 cases of snakebite were reported from the flood hit districts.[18] Several Diarrhea cases were reported as people were forced to drink flood water as they didn't have any freshwater resource.[19]
Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, on 18 August 2022, conducted an "Aerial Survey" over Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara and Puri districts and later announced a 15-day relief for the Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Khordha, Puri and Cuttack districts and 7-day relief to Sambalpur, Bargarh, Boudh, Sonepur and Angul districts.[20][21]
The Odisha Government later dispatched a financial aid of ₹128.8 crore to restore the damaged and destroyed public properties and to conduct relief operations in the flood hit areas.[22]
To conduct relief operations, 11 teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 12 teams of Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRF) and 52 teams of Odisha Fire Services were arranged in the flood hit Districts.[23]

Kendriya Vidyalaya No.3, Bhubaneswar ( ଓଡିଆ ( Odia ):- କେନ୍ଦ୍ରୀୟ ବିଦ୍ୟାଳୟ ନଂ-୩, ଭୁବନେଶ୍ଵର ) is a CBSE affiliated school present in Bhubaneswar, which is in control of KVS (Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan) and under MoE (Ministry of Education of India).[1]
The school was first established as a civil sector school in 1986 which was affiliated by CBSE and had classes from I-X. After that, the school was shifted to the present area in Mancheswer in 2003 and had classes from I-XII.[24]
The 30th KVS Youth Parliament Competitions were held in the school campus for two days, 18th and 19th August, 2017. [5]
The school was given two KVS National Incentive Awards on 15 December 2019.[citation needed]
The school has units of NCC ( National Cadet Corps of India ) and BSG ( The Bharat Scout and Guides ).[25]
