Teedyuscung article

I noticed that you've edited the Teedyuscung page recently. Leadville Historic District pics

[edit]

Hi CaroleHenson, my notices are pointing out your adding nice Template:Leadville mining to several articles, which reminds me about a big To Do item i have procrastinated about. I have about 1000 or 1200 photos documenting the Leadville Historic District to upload to a Commons category at least, maybe make a list-article of buildings in leadville historic district to display them. The NRHP-listed/NHL-designated area is huge, with about 1000 buildings, for which there is no list of buildings and no systematic documentation in photos. Early NRHP listings were minimal. As time goes by some of the miners' houses get demolished or altered. Drove up and down streets with a friend hanging out car window, a year ago, to try to get at least one photo for each building. You seem to appreciate the place, have you been around it, does it sound worthwhile to upload all. Would require lots of time labelling photos, and I am not aware of a tool to mass-upload besides one app that works on my iphone. Trying to get motivated to start somehow. --Doncram (talk) 02:14, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doncram, Wow! That sounds like a huge effort, but it would be nice. Perhaps you could post on commons and ask if there's some way to load the images enmasse.
Since you've posted here, and are interested in Leadville, do you mind looking at my post at Talk:Leadville, Colorado#Non-free material tag? I don't think that there are a lot of watchers for that page.
Really great to hear from you!–CaroleHenson (talk) 16:06, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. About commons uploading I see at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Upload_tools that there are tools I can try. I discover I first have to get access restored to a Dropbox that holds the photos, and I am started on that. I did respond about non-free tag. And I will start looking at the article to see about what improvements can be made. I haven't edited there before, I guess, because it was not on my watchlist. A high compliment

Hi Carole, I hope you're doing well. I don't know if you've seen it or not, but your work got a high compliment from another talented editor in response to my comment. Well-deserved, I might add. All the best, Carlstak (talk) 14:55, 2 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Carmel eloza (05:08, 15 October 2022)

[edit]

how to write down an article --Carmel eloza (talk) 05:08, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Carmel eloza
I see that you've tried to start an article about a musical group TROUBLESOME2KMUSIQ in a Draft and in your sandbox. I did a bit of googling and it does not appear that the group has sufficient experience yet to meet Notability guidelines for musicians. Do you have any other ideas for an article?–CaroleHenson (talk) 06:15, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you withdrew your nomination for deletion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Marilyn Gayle Hoff. You can only do this if no one else supported the deletion, per WP:WDAFD and WP:CLOSEAFD. But User:Pahiy voted to delete the article. Magnolia677 (talk) 13:35, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Pahiy:, you voted to delete the article before there had been a lot of work on the article, per the conversation at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Marilyn Gayle Hoff and 24 or so edits here by Beccaynr. Would you still vote to delete the article now?–CaroleHenson (talk) 15:36, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I saw the early close as a reasonable application of WP:IAR based on the 'per nom' !vote without elaboration by Pahiy, although looking more closely at the guidelines, the early close seems to technically be more of a snow keep than a speedy keep. As an involved editor, I don't think the outcome of the discussion will change, but if there is an objection to the close, reopening the discussion is an easy fix. Beccaynr (talk) 18:51, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, it's not a snow keep either; even after User:Beccaynr's comments, User:Lamona still only voted "weak keep". If the AFD had run it's natural course, would it have been a "keep"? Probably. The thing about AFDs though, is that people take them very seriously. Magnolia677 (talk) 20:19, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I now know that I need to be more careful in the rare situations where I would withdraw a nomination. What do you think we should do Magnolia677? If you think it should be reopened to run it's natural course, as Beccaynr mentioned, I am fine with that.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:29, 18 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees.

[edit]

Hey I think you may have forgot to add Judas Priest to your list of the 2022 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees 2603:8090:904:7335:998:1B32:C05B:CD4C (talk) 19:26, 21 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure what you are talking about. I may have added a link to List of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees but I haven't added or removed people from the list. Is this the page you are talking about? If you select Control+F and search on Judas, it will take you to him.–CaroleHenson (talk) 00:49, 22 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

First Ladies of the United States

Hello! I'm currently trying to bring List of first ladies of the United States to Good Topic status. I understand that you're a major contributor to Martha Jefferson Randolph and you've already brought it close to Good Article status. I was wondering if you had any interest in nominating it as a Good Article. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 16:49, 28 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, Thebiguglyalien, that could be interesting. I probably won't get to it this week, but likely next week.–CaroleHenson (talk) 22:25, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Great! There's certainly no rush; it's probably going to be several months before all of the articles are even at B-class. But each one helps! Thebiguglyalien (talk) 23:33, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thebiguglyalien I will start getting Martha Jefferson Randolph ready for good article status today, posting a checklist on Talk:Martha Jefferson Randolph for the work that needs to be done.–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:11, 30 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You stated that John Houston (immigrant) is the grandfather of Henry H. Houston. However, this means one's grandfather is 130 years older that him, which is unlikely. In addition, such is not supported by Geni.com, though it is not a reliable source to be cited in Wikipedia directly. GZWDer (talk) 17:57, 3 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question from 210-Minnesota (21:06, 31 December 2022)

[edit]

Hello CaroleHenson! I created an article in Greek and submitted it under my username in en.wikipedia, and it was rejected, with the suggestion it go over to the Greek Wikipedia. I then submitted the article to Greek Wikipedia (el.wikipedia.org,) and it was rejected without enough explanation for me to take remedial action. If what I am trying to achieve is to post a Greek language version of this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beata_Maria_Kitsikis_Panagopoulos is there a different procedure I should take rather than trying to submit a free-standing Greek article? Thanks for any suggestions you might have for a very new contributor. -Tivey. --210-Minnesota (talk) 21:06, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

210-Minnesota, It would be helpful to know why the Greek article was rejected. Perhaps notability, a problem with the sources, something else?–CaroleHenson (talk) 21:39, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Have you asked this question on the Greek site?–CaroleHenson (talk) 21:41, 31 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sadly, my conversational Greek is severely limited. But, the two cited reasons in the rejection were 1) what appears to be a policy violation: "Entries should not be advertising or promotion of yourself, your friends, or your company."
And, 2) an additional notation is: "You are recreating a previously deleted page." [I read one comment that an attempt at submitting this, or a similar, biographical Greek-language entry had been rejected in June 2021.] 210-Minnesota (talk) 00:45, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
A further note (originally in Greek) -- 05:53, 23 June 2021 OTtzavaras Beata Maria Kitsikis-Panagopoulos page (content was: '{{da|Non-Lemma - link to another BP}} [1]') 210-Minnesota (talk) 01:01, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
210-Minnesotaz In no particular order: Recreating a deleted page, from my perspective, isn't a reason to not create an article. But it would be good to edit for notable, relevant, objective content. There is a fair amount of unnecessary promotion / WP:PEACOCK language. I think thinning the article down to the most meaningful content would be helpful. For instance: During her watch, the Gennadius Library opened for additional hours and two evenings a week leading to a substantial increase in the number of people using the library. The physical structure of the library was remodeled. A new exhibition room and a section for archival research were added to the building. is not necessary.
It would be good to add information about her awards and anything else that adds to notability to the intro.
I am not sure that I can add anything about creating a Greek article out of this one. But if this article gets tidied up a bit, focusing on her noteworthy achievements, it will be easier. I'll do a bit of editing. It would be good to reorganize some of the headings, for instance, to make it easier to decipher the content in the sections.
The way that the article is written, it sounds like some of the content comes from a WP:Connected contributor, which brings up some additional issues. The linked article will explain the issues.–CaroleHenson (talk) 01:15, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks for your very helpful and specific recommendations. You have given me much to work with. 210-Minnesota (talk) 02:46, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, too, for taking the time to edit the English language version of the article, and for modeling your recommendations. I am very hopeful that incorporating your suggestions into the Greek language version of the article will improve its chances of acceptance. I appreciate your efforts and expertise. 210-Minnesota (talk) 03:33, 1 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Official606k (14:37, 8 January 2023)

[edit]

Hey Carole,

When I add a reference in Wikipedia article, should I add an archive link regardless of the status of the link or I should only add it if the link is dead? --Official606k (talk) 14:37, 8 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Official606k, The archive url and date are only added if the link is dead (even though it may have been archived over time).
Often I find, though, that the page has been relocated to another spot on the site, so I query the main site for the topic and see if I can find the new "live" url. I hope that makes sense.–CaroleHenson (talk) 05:35, 9 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ghent-Bruges school

[edit]

Hi Carole, I just wanted to drop you a line to say I've added a few sentences to the Ghent-Bruges school article you started once. So far I just added some remarks of criticism against the term, but it's not to wreck havoc with the article but an intended first step in a minor expansion. I'll try to add more on the substance in the coming days and thought I'd let you know what I'm doing. If you want we can discuss what and how. Best, Yakikaki (talk) 19:53, 15 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Ellen Craft (Q18528650) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. * Pppery * it has begun... 02:22, 24 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the article on Mary Brewster Hazelton. I am curious, who is the woman depicted in The Letter? Is it a self-portrait of the subject? It's a remarkable work. Viriditas (talk) 09:12, 10 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I am have researched Alonzo Barnard for years and years and here I find that you know incredible am't of stuff about him. Would appreciate corresponding. As I write, I am heading to visit Benzonia, Michigan to sniff about. I am focused on Fredric & Elisabeth Ayer who recruited Barnard to Minnesota missions and who lived at Belle Prairie where he apparently lived after leaving Pembina-St.Joseph, for a time and where he had a dauguerrean studio at Little Falls. The history of the "Oberlin Band" of missionaries and their collaboration with the Ayers is a remarkable one, given the sectarian nature of many of the mission projects. Gerda Arendt, I am not sure what it is, but I am so touched by this and/or Kölner Domchor. I am a psychic medium, getting poignant feelings beyond my experience, if that makes sense. Is something about the operas or the park that would be especially touching to your grandmother? Was she a sweet, elegant woman? Feel free to email rather than posting personal info here, if there is a connection. –CaroleHenson (talk) 16:33, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It could also be an aunt. What I am getting is a woman who wore her hair in lovely styles and statement jewelry pieces, like cuff bracelets. Classic, elegant - but not at all fussy - clothing. She didn't have to do a lot (hairdos, jewelry), though, to stand out. She had a lovely presence about her and great posture that signaled that she was a special woman.–CaroleHenson (talk) 16:41, 5 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. Sorry, no grandmother (but I knew only one) or aunt would fit that description. - 11 June or: Music not only by Bach --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:11, 12 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Gerda Arendt. I have been trying to sort it out. The woman appeared before me with as much detail as if I opened my front door to her in real life. Very sophisticated, lovely in spirit, and poised. I don't have relatives quite like her either.
It very rarely happens, but I have had some people who have passed that are in the news, movies, etc. come through to me as I am hearing about them. I had just seen Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I - then read about Adele in Wikipedia, the subject of the painting and movie Woman in Gold (film), just before I messaged with you. I was really emotionally moved (and open spiritually), so the only thing that makes sense to me is that she was Adele from the painting or her family member. I'll try to get a reading from her and see if she comes through. And, if so, why. It's an interesting mystery.
Thanks for the update about your music posts. It's always interesting to take those in.–CaroleHenson (talk) 22:51, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, and the pictured beauty matches your vision much better than any of my relatives ;) - Jörg Widmann is 50 today, and I began Stockholm pics. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:58, 19 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much, Gerda Arendt. What a lovely story of triumph by a tenatious woman. And, great vacation pics. I really appreciate it! I hope you are doing well.–CaroleHenson (talk) 12:01, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Prodding, etc

[edit]

We can agree that the article Nikki Hornsby is terrible. However, two things. First, it's a bad idea for anyone who's expressed an opinion on an article (or a part/aspect thereof) to remove others' comments from the article's talk page. I strongly suggest that you should only do this when the material is gratuitously and obviously offensive (crude comments on the subject's imagined sex life or lack thereof, and similar silliness) or appears to be libelous. Even if you haven't expressed an opinion, leave mere indignation: even if I hadn't expressed an opinion, I would not have removed what you removed. Secondly, proposed deletions (prods) are for uncontroversial cases, unsourced articles. The sourcing for this article is grossly inadequate, but some sources are provided: the article is not unsourced. And it's pretty obvious that the faction that, over the years, has been adding promotional blather would strongly object to the article's deletion; thus deletion would certainly not be uncontroversial. (Indeed, the subject may well satisfy WP:PERSON, for all I know. I'm not really competent to judge. I'd ask for Chubbles' opinion.) -- Hoary (talk) 01:23, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Hoary,
First: I get your point about removing talk page content. It's highly rare, I get that. I don't regret it in this case, but I definitely hear you about doing that in the middle of request for input / resolution of an issue. If you want me to set things back in the Grammy section of the talk page, I will do it... with a note and link about talk page guidelines.
Second: I am not sure about meeting Notability guidelines for musicians or people... there's not clear notability that I have seen yet, but it's possible. Gotcha re: prod. I can update the BLP post, changing the prod info to Afd with the link to guidelines for that.
Thanks for taking the time to post this message here. You're right.–CaroleHenson (talk) 01:42, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think it would be wise to reinstate what you deleted, yes. You would of course then be free to give your (dispassionate) opinion of it. You might also retract your tentative suggestion of a prod. -- Hoary (talk) 01:49, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hoary, I made the changes to the talk page... and added an ident here. It really helps me keep things straight.–CaroleHenson (talk) 02:21, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I now read: "Based on the patterns of content additions from IP users over the years, I recommend asking the page to be protected." No. And that's no without even looking at the history. What about content additions from IP users over the last 24 hours? Though one might, perhaps, expand that to a period of as long as one week: how deleterious and time-wasting have their attempts in the last week been? Please read -- OK, it's long and boring, so no immediate need to read, but please at least get the general drift of Wikipedia:Protection policy. -- Hoary (talk) 02:04, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hoary, We don't need to worry about that at the moment, and I realize it would have to be approved. I am gathering by your response is that it likely would not be approved, so it wouldn't make a difference what I thought. In 12 years, I think I only asked once for an article to be protected, if I remember right it was for 7 days and the IP user / sockpuppet issue was resolved soon after due to diligent management of the issue. — In the meantime, I am processing this.–CaroleHenson (talk) 02:21, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that talk page history should be preserved as maximally as possible, even if benignly off-topic; I think even our guidelines probably go too far in what can be removed. I recommend that prior discussion be retained. I also tried to wrangle the beast of that article a little (note that she or her family has also done some damage at her grandfather's page, Dan Hornsby. Chubbles (talk) 03:03, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Chubbles, that has been done. Thanks again for your work on finding a good version to start with and help last night on the article. It's nice to see it tag-free and fully cited.–CaroleHenson (talk) 11:47, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Chubbles, When working on Nikki's article, I became interested in her grandfather. So, with a pinch of atonement and more interest, I have been working on that one, too. I hope you like it.–CaroleHenson (talk) 22:25, 29 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Your emerging success

[edit]

Hi there, Carole. I've been following your contributions since we first started collaborating back in 2011. Today, thanks to your DYK on Catherine de Parthenay, I though I would drop you a line on how much I have appreciated your contributions over the years. You can see from these assessments that in addition to nine GAs, you have no less than 166 articles which have been B rated and 271 in class C. This is a really significant achievement, especially as more recently you have been creating an increasing number of biographies of women. I realize your beautifully presented user page does not have much room for wikiproject tags but nevertheless, with all your expertise, it seems to me you could be an inspiring member of WikiProject Women in Red where we are trying to chip away at the gender gap. If you would like to help us along, you can sign up under "New registrations" on Wikipedia:WikiProject Women in Red/New members. Whether on not you become a member, I look forward to many more of your detailed biographies of historical women. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 15:08, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ipigott, How nice of you to make this post and provide a class for a number of articles today. You were among the first people that I communicated withi in the beginning. You were so kind to work on my contributions and provide input and guidance. You were a light in the foggy times when I was trying to figure out how to edit in Wikipedia.
So, it's especially nice to get such a nice message for you. Thank you for all that you do!
I thought I was on the Women in Red members list. I will go add my name. Thanks for catching that. I hope you have a lovely day - and know how much you are appreciated.–CaroleHenson (talk) 16:13, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much for your kind words. It's good to have reestablished contact with an old friend. I really enjoyed looking back over your wonderful contributions on art, the Colorado Springs area and all your well developed biographies of both men and women. Many of your articles which had been successfully classed earlier had suffered from those who had added WP United States (without a class rating) and your own use of WP Virtual art (which has none). Virtually all your detailed articles on Van Gogh therefore became "unknown". Thanks to the recent possibility of using WP Banner shell (WikiProject banner shell|class=|blp=|blpo=|activepol=|collapsed=|listas=|1=) for assessments, I'm glad I have been able to sort it all out so that others can see your well developed contributions. It's thanks to contributors like you that Wikipedia has become such a useful resource. Keep up the good work and let me know if you ever think I can be of assistance.--Ipigott (talk) 16:39, 5 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thank you for signing up and welcome to the project. If you have not already done so, you might find it useful to look at our essays, especially the Primer. Please let me know if you run into any difficulties or need assistance. Happy editing!--Ipigott (talk) 06:25, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Excellent, thanks, Ipigott. There are some great sources that I didn't know about. Love the part about how to (and not to) write about notable women. I saw something like that within the past week. Very interesting and helpful.–CaroleHenson (talk) 14:35, 6 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to add my appreciation for the great work you do. I joined your fan club after I saw the great edits on John Brown (Abolitionist). -- Melchior2006 (talk) 07:15, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much! That was really nice of you, Melchior2006.–CaroleHenson (talk) 09:41, 30 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

July music

[edit]
July songs
my story today

Great music (in June, I'm behind: three great RMF concerts)! - Last Saturday, a friend played for us at her birthday party, on four instruments including baryton, with family (granddaughters!) and colleagues, from Renaissance to Haydn. - My story today is very personal: the DYK appeared on Wikipedia's 15th birthday, and describes a concert I sang. I was requested to translate the bio into German for a memorial concert ... - see background, and we talked about life and death. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:14, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gerda Arendt, thanks so much! Wow! the music program at the birthday party sounds awesome. Fun to hear that you sang at a concert... and I shouldn't be surprised. Interesting article. Lots of good things happening around you!–CaroleHenson (talk) 18:34, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No you shouldn't be surprised after reading the infobox on my user page ;) - I made up my mind to improve Mozart's Requiem. We'll sing it this year, 26 November. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:57, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt, Very interesting infobox. Good luck with everything you're working on!–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:19, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. You could actually help "luck" a bit. I look at the people who recently died, and those I care about (music, German, whatever) I try to improve to a state that they can appear in the section for Recent deaths on the Main page, which means everything has to be referenced, and a biography has to have some substance. Then it takes (normally) three supporters. You could be one of them ;) - just look at WP:ITNN and there for my name and cases with two supports already ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:35, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt, Interesting articles, I supported two articles. I didn't know about this process before. Very interesting.–CaroleHenson (talk) 23:41, 12 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you - and two articles appeared! My story today will be for one of them, and tomorrow the other. The RD process is rewarding in terms of pageviews, did you know? For some reason I can't explain, readers click on the names in that section - where they only get a name - more than in the DYK section where they get a sentence. I like to do memorials. You are very welcome to support the biographies of others as well! ... or even write them? Check Deaths in 2023 for people you would like to see remembered. Most names there I never heard before, such as the two now on the Main page. I learn a lot. - Did you see my idea for that memorial concert mentioned yesterday? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:06, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the link regarding recent deaths. I may check that out. Yes, it would be nice to hear any updates about the memorial concert. It is a good idea. Good luck!–CaroleHenson (talk) 13:44, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
not sure what you mean about updates - it happened in 2016, my idea - to sing the chorale, all of us present - was taken, and then I couldn't sing, for too much emotion, and too small print ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:41, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt, I misunderstood. I am sorry. I see. I have been really foggy for a couple of days.–CaroleHenson (talk) 17:51, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Your reaction to the (bold) request for help was perfectly clear ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:47, 13 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
more? fireworks on the Rhine pictured on 1 July, but the real stars were sun and moon. I love today's story. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:54, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt, Love the fireworks! Love the title of the article, reminds me of a Danish resistance fighter with the codename Flame or Flammen during the Rescue of the Danish Jews.
I love the article in today's story, too. What a woman!–CaroleHenson (talk) 23:42, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
She got a new pic! - Today, I remember Reger's Requiem, and our choirs' jubilee 2 weeks ago. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:44, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt Love the new pic!
The Requiem is so powerful. I found this one on youtube. What do you think about having a direct link to a recording, like using the {{External media}} template or perhaps in the Recordings table. If I remember correctly, it's ok to have extneral links in certain lists. WP:ELYES.
I have been crying through this. It makes me think of the Christmas truce during World War I with the dead in "no mans land" and the soldiers cold and wet in the trenches before they call the truce. One of my favorite stories. Wow, this music and use of quiet at times - and then loud and fast - is very powerful! Shivers!–CaroleHenson (talk) 22:09, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, feel understood! The pic is by Storye book, who has helped me to other portraits and would help you as well, I'm sure. About the Requiem, I just spoke to Antandrus. - I've seen external audio in the body of articles, but haven't used it myself. - I found two YouTube videos for a little song we sang today, - one done during COVID with separate tracks for the singers, and one with the text author singing and clapping. - In the Requiem, I hear too little of the bass in the beginning, but too much of the first choir entrance which should be more mysterious for me. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:37, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt, Thanks for the tip on someone to help with images. I have been working on Anne Gliddon and would love to get a picture of her.
Interesting comments on the requiem. I just picked from a search - without any idea how good the recording was compared to other recordings that might be truer to the composition. I'll hunt around to find one that is even better a bit later. Thanks so much for giving me a window into what is fulfilling for you!–CaroleHenson (talk) 22:48, 16 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I use only youtube with decent publishers, and avoid it when there many styles of a piece - readers will find something they like, I trust. - On today's Main page, you can find a cantata that Bach first performed 300 years ago, and an iconic saxophonist from East Germany. Also: a bit about the history of QAI on my talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:33, 18 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

While today's DYK highlights Santiago on his day, I did my modest share with my story today, describing what I just experienced, pictured. I began the article of the woman in green. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:22, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gerda Arendt Lovely. I listened to the version by Tenebrae (choir) on youtube. Very emotional. Now I know what the path to miracles sounds like.–CaroleHenson (talk) 15:51, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Today Jahrhundertring, and I'm listening to Götterdämmerung from the Bayreuth Festival, close to the scene pictured, - the image (of a woman who can't believe what she has to see) features also on the article talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:01, 31 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thomas Williams

[edit]

Dear Carole Hensen, I very much enjoyed the wiki page on Thomas Williams who is one of my ancestors. I believe there were a few errors in the wiki page with respect to his descendants. Angelique is daughter of Thomas and Cecile. Cecile and Jacques Louzon had a large family so John R, Catherine and Angelique had many half siblings. Cecile’s maiden name was Cecile Campau. I found out these facts doing family genealogy work. I can try to send sources. Thank you, Robin Williams Curiouserandcurioser (talk) 03:30, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Curiouserandcurioser
I will take a look at it, Robin, and see if I mixed up anything. And also if I can find other sources for Thomas Williams (pioneer).
Let's see what comes up that way. I have done a lot of family geneaology work and there are stricter requirements for what is a reliable sources at Wikipedia, which I generally sum up as having an independent editor and an independent publisher. Good to hear from you.–CaroleHenson (talk) 03:56, 25 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Curiouserandcurioser From the sources I have found, Thomas Williams and Cecile Campau (also Campeau) had three children, Catherine, Elizabeth, and John R. And, they are almost always spoken of the same way,
Elizabeth taught in a Catholic school that co-founded with three other young women under the auspices of Gabriel Richard, a Detroit priest. She lived a single, chaste lifestyle, like a nun.[19][b] In 1809, Catherine married Jean Baptiste Peltier with whom she had two children.[4] John R. was the first mayor of Detroit, and served several of times more. He married his cousin, Mary Mott Williams, in 1804. They had ten children.[4]
Yes, I have that Cecile was a Campau, which is mentioned in the article. I also added a link to an article that I started, Campau family. Sometimes the surname is spelled Campeau. Was there a particular reason that you said Cecile’s maiden name was Cecile Campau.?
Regarding Angelique, is there, by any chance, confusion with Angelique Campau, who like Elizabeth taught at the Catholic school with Gabriel Richard - from here?
Angelique Campau (not Williams or Loson) married someone with a similar name to Catherine's husband - Angelique's husband was Jean B. Piquette here. That could have caused some confusion if someone mixed up Angelique Campau with Catherine Williams.
I am having a hard time finding Angelique, including in the French Catholic Church records from Detroit. And had to remove the citation that I had for her, because she wasn't there. It would be great to know what sources you have for Angelique.
You had started your message out that you see a couple of problems, but the only one that I am getting is Angelique's paternity. Or, am I missing something?–CaroleHenson (talk) 00:27, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I added Angelique Campau's husband's name - underlined.–CaroleHenson (talk) 00:41, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Cecile had a second marriage to Jacques Lozon. They had a lot of children. So John R had many half siblings, which seem to be more or less ignored in the Williams family history thereafter. Could one of them be Angelique? The half siblings of John R aren’t related to Thomas, but still there are some amusing elements to this part of the story. One of John R’s descendants was a younger Thomas Williams who was a military man and at one time the commandant on MacInaw (?) island. The Louzons had family connections with some of the Indians in the area. Also, the St. Clair farm was the only piece of land that was saved from original Thomas’ estate. Jacques Campau, I believe, at one time tried to claim it. I found an old lawsuit by John R and the half siblings relating to this. This is all old research of mine. First I’ll send the genealogical info I have which I will have to extract from ancestry.com. Catherine’s descendants did a great genealogical study which at one point was public and outside of ancestry.com. I think maybe I confused Angelique and Catherine when I wrote to you. More to come. PS As far as Cecile’s name I have always seen it spelled Campau. Interestingly they seem to have been a French speaking family. I have an old letter written by her to John R and it is in French. Curiouserandcurioser (talk) 00:52, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Curiouserandcurioser Interesting info about the Williams - Campau - Losan families. I couldn't find anything in ancestry.com - but if you pass me a link, I can look it up there. Or, tell me what to search for... I have tried Angelique - born 10 years more or less from 1684 when Williams died. And, Angelique with Williams and Campau. If you could point me to a specific record, that would help a lot.
I have also searched through Early history of Detroit books and books about the Campau family.
For now, I removed the sentence about Angelique. I cannot find her as the daughter of Cecile at all.–CaroleHenson (talk) 00:58, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I wanted to attach a pdf of my ancestry page on Cecile but cannot figure out how to do it. I did find some original documents that are in ancestry. I took a look at some of the source documents such as her marriage to Jacques Lozon. That document is in French and calls her Campeau, but her brother Campau. I can give you viewing rights to my family tree if you want. I’ve never been on wiki before so it is a bit difficult for me to navigate. The Louzon’s had one daughter Marie Angelique but she only lived a year. And Thomas Williams seemed to have only John R, Catherine and Elisabeth as you thought. Robin Williams Curiouserandcurioser (talk) 01:23, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Curiouserandcurioser, What you found about Marie Angelique Louzon makes a lot of sense. There were a series of epidemics in Detroit and its surrounding area that kept the priests busy to manage the ill and dying.
I think we're good right now. It's been an interesting discussion, Robin.–CaroleHenson (talk) 04:43, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Colorado Day!

[edit]
How lovely, Pbritti! Great picture of Garden of the Gods with the very snowy Pikes Peak in the background. It's a good side shot of the red rock formations. (I am trying to figure out where the picture is taken from... perhaps the visitor center or Mesa Road.) Thanks for the message!–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:10, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was wondering about the angle, too. I think it may be from the construction on the hogback just east of GOTG, but I my own photos from that area don't quite align. ~ Pbritti (talk) 20:12, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Pbritti, Since the road goes to the visitor center, I am thinking it's a little further north and up on Mesa Road. It is a beautiful angle. There's a really cool lookout area there, I am guessing you know.–CaroleHenson (talk) 21:00, 1 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

August music

August songs
my story today

Today's music is played by my brother's orchestra, conducted by two very young men on their way up, - the picture was taken shortly after the invasion of Ukraine began, - more detail on my talk. Images reached the day of the Tenebrae concert mentioned in July. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:23, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gerda Arendt What an interesting bit of information: "played by my brother's orchestra". I am not sure if that means that he's one of the conductors or an owner / manager of the orchestra. I bet you are a super proud sister and vice versa.
I really like the selection of The Firebird to honor the Ukranians. Amazing evocative music... that I liked and understood even more when I researched about the meaning of Stravinsky's The Firebird. Amazing! Thanks for sharing it Gerda!
You know I am prone to finding a meaning or connection... today it is my memory of how Pat Conroy (3rd and 4th paragraph), a Southern American teacher of poor black children living on an isolated island, taught his students to appreciate music by explaining the meaning of classical pieces like Beethoven's Fifth or Flight of the Bumblebe. I found a clip of the movie of his life at that time, Conrack, and the place where he explains and plays Beethoven's Fifth here at 32.16, so good! (the bumble bee and Brahms' Lullaby are played 3 minutes earlier). He's like you... spreading your love of music.–CaroleHenson (talk) 18:49, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I hope It won't disillusion you too much that my sloppy a bit sensational wording just meant that my brother is a player, - more detail on my talk, as said. Also, the program was set months before. - Connections: I just was surprised on radio by "Ach, ich habe sie verloren", from Gluck's Orfeo ed Euridice, to which I held a puppet on strings of Orfeo lamenting in a school production. Conductor Ferenc Fricsay, the same as in the first scenic production (1948) of the piece I worked on here yesterday, Le Vin herbé (because I saw it here). Small world. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:37, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt Wow! That's very interesting. Yes, a small world.–CaroleHenson (talk) 21:56, 2 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! - My story today - a first - isn't about an article by me, but one I reviewed for DYK, see here. I like all: topic, "hook", connected article (a GA on its way towards FA), image and the music "in the background". I just returned from a weekend of weddings, so also like the spirit ;) - Pics to come, I promise one cake, the other was too large! Good music, and better even in the concert ending the second day, - Goldberg Variations theme for an encore, after Dohnányi Serenade. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:10, 7 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Very cool, thanks! I hope you're having a great day.–CaroleHenson (talk) 15:31, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Again not by me: today's story - with the triumph of music over military - is uplifting! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:24, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much, Gerda Arendt, that reminds me of Vedran Smailović, the cellist of Sarajevo, who played during the siege of Sarajevo. It's one of my favorite stories how he sat in the middle of a bombed out square to play his cell for peace. Much appreciated.–CaroleHenson (talk) 23:23, 9 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! - Now: picture of heart-shaped cake(s) uploaded! - Today's story is about a tenor, - why his roles are not linked on the Main page remains a mystery to me. Today is also the birthday of the Bayreuth Festival. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:34, 13 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
One more day uploaded, with another wedding cake - I couldn't resist. Today's story is about the Inkpot Madonna who returned to "her place" 9 years ago, and also has aspects of early learning, remember? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:26, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Today is the anniversary of the premiere of Götterdämmerung. Berit Lindholm sang its final scene in concert at the Royal Festival Hall in London, only four years after her stage debut in a Mozart opera in Stockholm. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 19:31, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Very interesting! Thanks so much, Gerda Arendt. You have amazing knowledge and passion about music and musicians.–CaroleHenson (talk) 19:39, 17 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I love your response because DYK doesn't think she is interesting. Today, my focus is on Renata Scotto, after days of updating. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:18, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Very cool, Gerda Arendt! I may have seen Renata at the Met in NYC. I went to a number of operas during the time she was there. You do such great work!–CaroleHenson (talk) 20:39, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
One of the sources (Met roles) has all her performances, and for each the complete cast, and for some a review. You can run it against your memory. I was there some of the time but didn't see her, as I was more interested in Teresa Żylis-Gara. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:47, 21 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting, Gerda Arendt! How cool if we had passed each other at the Met!–CaroleHenson (talk) 00:55, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
yes, cool, - I remember without looking that I saw La bohème twice, on the day after the blizzard in spring 1983 (and the fire was too high when Rodolfo burnt his poems, and Levine had to interrupt until a fireman had extinguished), and on 16 November 1984, Domingo conducting. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 05:13, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Today is Debussy's birthday. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:43, 22 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt, Thanks, it's funny how our memories come together! Love your post - and that it was Debussy's birthday. You are fun!–CaroleHenson (talk) 17:04, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, funny! Today is Gwendolyn Killebrew's birthday, - pictured: a spider and sweet food --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:18, 26 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This too shall pass. - Ten years ago on 28 August, I heard a symphony, with a heavy heart because of the pending decision in WP:ARBINFOBOX, and not worried about my future here but Andy's. - It passed, and I could write the DYK about calling to dance, not battle, and Andy could write the DYK mentioning about peace and reconciliation, - look. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 15:12, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt, I love so much of what you have posted here: bugle call to dance, quote from Malala Yousafzai (isn't she amazing! love her!), Ben Gunn's metamorphosis, and the music! Thanks so much!–CaroleHenson (talk) 22:45, 28 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
10 years ago! - my story today: epic voice --Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:40, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Gerda Arendt, really lovely expansion of the article from a stub. I like that it not only explores who she was as an artist, but also who she was as the matriarch of the family. She sounds like someone I would really have enjoyed getting to know. Great work!–CaroleHenson (talk) 22:42, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, - quoted on my talk ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 22:01, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

El Pueblo change regarding original founder James Beckwourth

I understand your removal of the change I made which was not accompanied by an appropriate reference. I am away from my library but will complete the task within the next couple of days. Thanks for your attentions - good work!

Sfn references

[edit]

Hi, I've fixed all the sfn errors you introduced to Amanda Knox. DuncanHill (talk) 09:28, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Very cool, DuncanHill. I don't know what you mean by "all the sfn errors you introduced". I saw 2 edits. Anyway. I used the "authors" parameter as the only way I could figure out to solve the duplicate sfn errors - even when using the "ref" parameter within the bibliography entries.
I didn't see the sfn errors. Thanks much for fixing the issue!–CaroleHenson (talk) 16:39, 29 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

my story today

Our festival's last concert was most moving and inspiring, and there are seconds of it - plus glimpses of an interview with the conductor, age 96 - in this tv summary. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:40, 3 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Now pics around the memorable concert, and the story of Walter Arlen, - proud that I survived the decision in WP:ARBINFOBOX for 10 years, standing and singing --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:07, 11 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Today's story is about a great pianist with an unusual career, taking off when he was 50. It's the wedding anniversary of Clara and Robert Schumann, but I was too late with our gift. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:40, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Gerda Arendt, Hello! I have not been on Wikipedia much in the last week or so, but will be catching up on your posts soon. Thanks for sharing your stories, articles, and music with me!–CaroleHenson (talk) 05:04, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
take your time - today I remember Raymond Arritt, who still helps me, five years after he died, per what he said in my darkest time on Wikipedia (placed in my edit-notice as a reminder), and by teh rulez. - Latest pics from a weekend in Berlin (one more day to come). --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:21, 19 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sky Above Clouds

[edit]
I will be focusing on some other articles for a bit, but if you need something, let me know.

I'm taking you up on your offer! Any chance you can take a look at Sky Above Clouds and make some suggestions for improvement, or give it a copyedit? No rush on this, of course. Viriditas (talk) 19:55, 5 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

March 2024 reverting edit of Murder of Michele MacNeill

[edit]

Hello CaroleHenson. I'm Quaerens-veritatem . Being reverted is an extremely rare event for me and your reversion of my edit of the infobox of Murder of Michele MacNeill as of 17:11, 4 March 2024 certainly got my attention. While I did make an error with the sentence for identity theft, I stand by the rest of the edit and I have re-added the same information with the correction and minor reorganization for clarity and reflect separation of the theft matter. For my reasons and sources please see my new edit summary that I supplied in detail in this unusual instance to deal with your comments.

Regarding your comment, Additional info without a source. you may note in my new edit summary that I referenced parts of the article to support the edit but did not place particular references in the infobox since references are not usually added in keeping with MOS:INFOBOXREF.

As to your question, why a range of years, sentences are often in a range allowing possible parole of the offender after serving the first part of the range. For instance, a sentence of one to 15 years means the offender must serve one year but could ask for parole after that; however, if the parole board never grants parole, the offender must be released in 15 years (or less if the jurisdiction allows time off for good behavior, etc.).

Before reverting I wish you had investigated the edit and just made the one correction. After you read the new edit summary and this message, if you still have a problem, please let me know. Regards, Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 03:31, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Quaerens-veritatem,
It sounds like you're upset over having an edit reverted, so I am glad that you posted here so we can sort it out.
It's extremely rare that I get talked to in this way. I think we both have the best of intentions, so perhaps we can continue this conversation from that perspective.
I was really confused by the range of years. I am used to "sentenced to xx years, with the possibility of parole after xx years". The range of years confused me - not a hard thing to do these days - and that's were I think things got muddled.
I now understand what you are doing - and see that the information was cited in the document - so it looks good to me after clarification.
Keep doing great work and continuing to seek the truth!–CaroleHenson (talk) 06:47, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply CaroleHenson. Yes, I was out of sorts since I had reviewed the article before posting the original edit, didn’t see the need for refs per MOS:INFOBOXREF, the article reported the sentences (which, for future reference, are typical), and I felt the revert was unnecessary for anyone briefly reviewing the article. Nevertheless, I tried to give my response to you in a direct and concise manner, and didn’t intend to be mean spirited. I agree that you didn’t revert with any ill will and we both have the best intentions. Thanks for your extensive and helpful work for the encyclopedia, let’s move on to productive matters, and consider the matter amicably resolved. Kind regards, Quaerens-veritatem (talk) 08:41, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MariannLact, That was awhile ago and the article still needs help. I looked at the changes since I cleared out some content here and see that there's a lot of uncited content, which is confused a bit, I think, because a series of paragraphs are uncited and then the last of the series has a source. I wonder, too, how much of the content has been cut-and-pasted into the article. My gut reaction is to remove all really uncited content. What do you think?–CaroleHenson (talk) 01:44, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We must have passed each other in the ether. I forgot the title in the citation template, saw the error, and fixed it already. Thanks for what you're doing!–CaroleHenson (talk) 04:32, 22 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
