Matthew Effect

In science reputation plays a large role in securing resources. Places/people with good reputations can secure lots of funds, with lots of funds they can do lots of research, with lots of research they can reinforce their reputation, a strong reputation allows they to secure more resources/funds. As I'm sure you can see its something of a feedback loop. Reputation in science is based on credit (citations, awards, associations...) mis-attribution of credit is thus a big deal especially when lots of grant money is at stake. I reread my latest comment on "is melvin manhoef okay?" on the reference desk. It occured to me that you could misread this as an offence. I am totally aware that what you wrote about using the Entertainment desk does not imply you would be thinking this kind of "sports" was an entertainment of any kind, but to where such incidents are classified nowadays by the majority of media-people. Vending machines question

Hi, Tuttle. I was startled, not to say shocked, to find that you had removed my comment from the RefDesk just now. I thought that wasn't something we did on the RefDesk except in special circumstances - and I'm also surprised that you didn't drop me a note when you did it.

OK, you found my reply unhelpful. I intended it to be helpful, and who knows, maybe others would have found it so too. I genuinely couldn't work out what the OP was asking - obviously it was about somebody removing vending machines from the campus, but I could not tell from the question which party was supposedly doing so. My unlikable answer

I'd be grateful if you could expand (here rather than on that or my talk page) on this comment of yours. You seem unhappy with my mere mention (as one of several alternatives) of the possibility of moving to an alternative to Windows; I don't understand why. And I don't know what the other objection is.

Of course your own comment was polite, and I am not complaining about it in the slightest. And everybody is welcome to dislike anything that I write. However, there seems to be some meaning here that eludes me and I'd like to know what it is. -- Hoary (talk) 11:02, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Nice job. (I'm not sure a Wikipedia user page is the right place for such a general-purpose document, but never mind that. :-) ) Three comments:

1. 100MB of JPEG picture files will fit on one CD. Not sure what numbers you had in mind there.
2. I'm really glad you included the advice about creating separate user and administrator accounts. I wish more people did that.
3. I agree that in general, disk images can be preferable to backups, and backups can be preferable to just manually copying (or dragging) selected files and folders to a removable disk. But for a compromised system, personally, I feel the reverse is true. And in any case (even if the "backup" is just a bunch of manually-copied files), I think you should put in some kind of explicit warning to treat that backup disk as poison. You must never boot from it, you must never mount it and run any apps which are on it, you must never copy any executable programs back off of it, you must be careful copying any data files which might contain executable content back off of it. Not "on the contrary" – the relevant guideline clearly states, "removal of others' comments generally does not extend to messages that are merely incivil; deletions of simple invective are controversial. Posts that may be considered disruptive in various ways are another borderline case and are usually best left as-is or archived." While Jayron's comment was definitely BITE-y (though arguably justified), it did answer the question and could not be described as a personal attack. At worst, it was incivil, and WP:TPO suggests that removal of such material is inappropriate.

You have quoted a number of your opinions as if they are fact; allow me to point this out.

1. The comment should never have been posted, I think you might agree with that. As it happens, I do agree on this point, yes.
2. Removal of the comment was therefore the right thing to do. No – this principle is contrary to Wikipedia's ethos in general (hence "removal of others' comments generally does not extend to messages that are merely incivil"). Auschwitz should never have been built, but that's not to say it should be demolished.
3. The rules you keep quoting at me are article talk page rules, and the Reference Desk is not an article talk page. It has aspects of an article talk page, but it is not one. This is Wikilawyering in the extreme: to back up such a claim, you would need to either find a policy specifically exempting the RefDesk from WP:TALK, or find a policy permitting the deletion of vaguely incivil comments on the RefDesk. In essence, if you can't produce a better written alternative to WP:TALK, then that will have to do (elements of COMMONSENSE and IAR here).
4. Look at whether the comment should exist on the Reference Desk. Clearly, it should not. See point (2).

Reference desk + removing comments (again)

Hi, you may remember that a couple of weeks ago, I warned you that deleting others' comments from the RefDesk violated WP:TPO and you informed me, "The rules you keep quoting at me are article talk page rules, and the Reference Desk is not an article talk page."

However, I should let you know that today, I happened across Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Guidelines, specifically the section #When removing or redacting a posting which clearly states, "When removing or redacting someone else's posting, the usual talk page guidelines apply." Which was exactly my point all along.

So I was right, and policy did prohibit your actions, and your Wikilawyering was not only Wikilawyering but also completely mistaken. For this reason, I hope that you will not delete others' messages from the RefDesk again. Thanks. ╟─TreasuryTag►Tellers' wands─╢ 16:31, 15 May 2010 (UTC)

Back button problems

They archived the discussion, but I thought I'd let you know I haven't gotten a satisfactory response at the Microsoft forum. One person gave detailed instructions for the reinstallation of IE8. Not going to happen. This is a minor annoyance and something like reinstalling will just create bigger problems. I'll look into that other site. Now that I've had plenty of practice maybe I can report the bug in a way they'll understand. As for using the mouse to go back and forward, it's a habit I'm just not going to break. The table is too small anyway for me to do much with the mouse. If only Office Max had a size in between this one and that great big one I decided against. But that's where I bought it. Besides, there doesn't seem to be any more room. I can't push the big chair back because there's a box there and it's a tight squeeze to get on the computer now. On the other hand, there's plenty of room between the tower and the sofa. Why the reference page is a useless waist of wikipedia

I go to ask questions to help me with a movie, and they tell me i am using it as a forem, just because that coppy-cat Annika made forems and coppied my spelling mistakes. Why is everyone trying to be a judge judy to me, not Annika? Alt-Tab didn't work

I got yelled at for not asking a question. It's hard enough just to describe the problem. Anyway, I lost two buttons but Alt-Tab would only take me to the two buttons that were left. The other buttons magically reappeared.

And I just had that forward button disappearing/back button taking me forward coming back here from getting the address of my reference desk question(only it was Alt-left).Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 15:36, 14 August 2010 (UTC)

I thought it was you I told, but I guess not. I had a hard enough time finding the courage to even have a computer by myself without someone to help me if I got in trouble. It helped when the cost of Internet access went way down, but gas was $4 a gallon too. So that was an incentive to stop going to libraries as much. The idea of trying to do something so complicated as switching to Firefox is just too much. I don't know how to make his any clearer.

And I am serious when I say that at the library, with Firefox, the buttons disappeared and their windows would not come up with Alt-Tab. They magically reappeared later, and when one came back clicking on it twice made the other missing window come back. Not its button, though that did come back. It just happened. I had three buttons. I tried to switch to one of the buttons while an ad was very slow to come up, and then the button wasn't there, and Alt-Tab won't make it come back. I feel that people are ignoring my questions on there, especially when i ask about who does a voice. Someone please answer the northwest profiles and wordgirl questions please, or i may coppy the question and ask until the mystery is solved. Please do something in my favour to help me find the mystery without any telling me to use e-mail as i am having trouble with it. ASAP, you're ausom enough for me to turn to you, so please help. i don't like being ignored like that when it comes to knowing a voice of a charactor because i cannot read the credits myself as i cannot see, and the freaks at imdb still say that wordgirl has 50 episodes when it is well into season 3. answerable question

The ksps narrator question does have links on where to go to find the voice credit for the narrator, in fact, i found the ones with each narrator, and i labeled them a b and c so i know which one it is. i don't think you need an expert to find the narrator on it, just look at the credits of these interesting shows. but i do understand for wordgirl episode voices, maybe someone should post them on youtube. as for the e-mail, i am really getting started with it, (i know, i'm almost 18 and i don't really know much about e-mail ) so i would rather wait and turn to you guys who may be able to help me. by the way, the question i asked about the wordgirl voice, the episode in question airs again on sept 24 at 6 pm eastern time on ksps (pbs spokane) and on september 27 at 4 pm eastern time on wtvs (detroit public tv pbs) hopefully that helps you and the others. thanks for trying though. if you do find the answers, then let me know either on the ref desk or on my talk page. 204.112.104.172 (talk) 10:31, 17 September 2010 (UTC)

Why are the others ignoring it. they don't need a spaciffic episode, just any episode to see the voice credits. and i did correct the wikipedia article to what i think is right. in any case, Greg Bursand and Michael Bell are definately not multo and bula. they sound more like cam clark. i need your help and others help to help me clear up this matter and confirm my information. i don't want to lead people in the wrong direction. Juniper lee dvd

Can you please help me with my juniper lee question on the entertainment reference desk? i'm trying to find out an example list of episodes on a volume of juniper lee if they release select episode volumes. By this, i don't mean a 50 episode list, just like 5-8 episodes. (just examples from the show, you don't have to watch it, the descriptions will give people an idea on what the episode is about.) Like i mentioned on my recent comment on the reference desk, when the question isn't on the imediate list (when it goes into the archive), i will put it up again so the users will still have time to help me. i want to make it possible for them to do it. It isn't a voice question all though i do mention that mike mires voices monroe the dog, it is just a genral question on what episodes would be on a juniper lee dvd. Wake up ref desk

Can you please get someone to answer the cyberchase question i left? I check both the ref desk and my talk page, and nothing. I told them that all the episodes are on youtube, so they can just type in the name and it will bring it up. Can you please tell the other admins for me to "WAKE UP! it's a new day." I know you are awake, so i don't blame anyone at all, i'm just trying to shed light on my question that is still unanswered. I hope they arn't ignoring me just because of the problom i had with my talk page. (power failure while i was editing caused my talk page to be blanked). Can you please get them to at least consider my question, i can always tell when something is bipassed, it's one of my best gifts i have. Wake up ref desk part 2

I have asked the biz kids question about whether it is Catherine Thompson, Jes Brieden or Someone else who does a voice on biz kids (see the question), and i still am not getting anything, this is my 5th time, i've givven the ref desk a couple months to answer it. By the way, the next airing of biz kids is 7:00 eastern time on PBS spokane (ksps) I also mention a question about the voice of a police officer on wordgirl, he appears in the episodes "wham up" and "granny and clyde" He sounds somewhat like the reporter, and also has a space ghost quality to his voice. I know the voice questions are annoying, but i am working on a movie project, and the voice actor questions i ask help me expand my knowledge of the voice actors, so the movie will be successful. I want to know who to choose for a character so they sound the closest to what i imagine the character to sound like. In my movie, Mr. Jones sounds like the police officer from wordgirl, and Annie sounds like Peg from Biz Kids. I just want to know who it is, so i can describe the voice for when i send in the possibility to a company, that way, i'm not getting constent questions about 'who do you think should do a voice for this character, who sounds closest to what you imagine the character to sound like? Please just, don't let the people just ignore it. movie idea

Can you please improove this movie idea: Annie is staying in Connecticut to see her friend Joan, and she stays at the "creature in hotel", which is rumered to be haunted. When she stays at the hotel in room 203, she notices really wierd stuff going on. There is a figure that keeps going near her, and she often hears crying or singing in the night, coming from near by the window. Annie goes to the front desk and is directed to Elizabeth Jones in room 204, who tells her about the ghost of Catherine Jones, who died in 1910 at age 13. it is unknown how she dies, but Annie then calls in her ghost hunter brother (Sean Desman), named norman who finds Catherine near the heater in 203. Annie, Norman and the other ghost hunters must help Catherine realize that the people who used to tease her are not there any more, and she can rest in peace. Do you have any ideas to spice the movie up? I.e. How Catherine died, or who should do voices in the movie, or just other additions to the plot? i'm open to new ideas. I also see that 216 also made a comment saying that my calling myself "<redacted> man" is the s word. Why would he make such a comment, what's wrong with this. I clearly stated that if <redacted> has a problom with me calling myself, then she is free to ask me not to. I don't want Kyle Hanso to be telling me what to do. I know this person, and for the record, though his address is shared with a school, it is also his home address. Do you see anything in my rules or intro that a sane person would find irrational? Alphabetical list of keyboard shortcuts

I' m glad I made this a user space article. I knew it would be a long day, but I never dreamed emacs would have a whole different set. I used the two lists you pointed out to me, though I don't quite understand some of what I did and it doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and for Apple I did a Bing search and came up with a list. I'm nowhere near finished because I didn't even start on combinations starting with ALT, and I basically limited myself to sources rather than just copying from Table of keyboard shortcuts in the actual list.

I don't know whether the emacs list would make this too complicated to use. Since there's no overlap, it could probably be a separate list anyway. I didn't even deal with KDE or Gnome yet either, though they seem to have a lot in common with windows.

Since you're the one that answered me when I asked, I'd like you to take a look at what I finally did. And if you're wondering why I can't just search for stuff like I did today, I am at a library (I avoid going to most sites at home) and just because I listed stuff doesn't mean I understand how it works. Plus when I'm at home I tend to get a mental block (which may be similar to what people with Alzheimer's sometimes go through) when trying to do something other than what I'm doing. Today I was JUST doing this, but after a while formatting became like remembering people's faces for someone with Alzheimer's.

No, if you look at the references, I got the emacs information from a source. Maybe it doesn't belong, and the title "operating systems" may be incorrect if I do include it. I just didn't know what else to use. Still, I did a lot of work with the emacs. I asked the question originally because there were some letters of the alphabet I had never seen with CTRL or ALT. It's not intended to be an improvement but a supplement. If the information existed on the web it wouldn't be needed. For regular Macs there is such a list for at least some of the keys. The best justification I can think of is if someone does something by accident and wants to know what happened. I removed the emacs shortcuts and started a new ‎list just for them. There is virtualy no overlap, but I can see where the emacs shortcuts might be useful in the same list. We can assume the action someone is familiar with on Windows or Mac is the same one for which a certain combination works on emacs. Biz kid$

Hey, me again. IMDB does not say that Catherine Thompson does a voice on Biz Kid$, yet it is true. She may not be 100% notable, but she did it. Anything i could do if someone decides to delete it from the Biz Kid$ article? And as for their claim about IMDB, IMDB never said that Elizabeth Jones voices Poddling on Cyberchase, yet, they excepted that info for List of CyberChase characters. For Wordgirl, it says that Amy Cederis voices Ms. Davis, yet IMDB has no mention of it, yet the article WordGirl still excepts it. so their claim about IMDB having the full cast is wrong. I mean, the same thing is true for Catherine Thompson, she isn't on IMDB, yet she still did it, and that's why i put that in the article and that's why i support that she did the voice. Thanks for helping me about what to do about finding more on Catherine Thompson, as sune as my connection's security is fixed, i'll try some of that stuff. The reason i did all those posts on the ref desk and other places in the article, is because like i mention on the talk page for the ref desk, i have gotten messages that indirectly state that the author of the message doesn't think that i'm right, or at least that's part of what i understand. I understand she is not totaly notable, but she does deserve mention. Voice acting isn't exactly a piece of cake, i would know. You have to get your lines right, make your voice change to what the director wants, which is not always easy and takes some practice, etc. etc. Anyway, thanks for helping me, you are a good friend. RD US-centric querents

It's interesting that in your suggested wording you highlight the fact that almost all ignorant, myopic questions come from US based querents. (Oh, and I do like that last word.) I think we have a duty to all readers (not just the person asking the question), when a question is ambiguous because of its US-centrism. This IS a global encyclopaedia, and pandering to ignorance anywhere must never be our role. I appreciate a need for niceness, but, depending on cultural perspectives, asking a question that ignores the possibility that other parts of the world may be able to add context can also be quite offensive to those of us from such other parts. What often bothers me most personally about the ignorant questions is not so much the ignorance, but the arrogance that only things in the USA matter. The ignorance can be cured. The arrogance I'm not sure about.

These discussions are useful. I do learn and change based on them. However, rather than just your suggestion of "Assuming you're talking about the US...", I am more likely to aim for wording along the lines of "I hope you realise that what you're asking can also apply in xxxxx, but because you didn't clarify, I will assume you mean just in the USA." That's so true about the Indians. Many of those are so cryptic I can't see any way I can help. I guess that highlights another difference. Many non-Americans know quite a bit about America because of its domination of world media (even if Rupert Murdoch came from my home town - he yours now!) In reference to your reference desk answer on the topic of Wiki editors rescinding copyright license grant, you're wildly wrong in saying that a license isn't a form of contract. You wrote:

The license is of course to the publisher, in this case the wikimedia foundation. And consideration is very much a factor, notwithstanding the fact that both of these issues are trivially disposed of. The second part of your comment is absolutely right.

However I'm dismayed at your confidence in delivering the first part of this answer. You're absolutely wrong, and yet you deliver it as though you were supremely confident. The wiki reference desk has been good, in the context of the internet, about avoiding this sort of thing, but I've noticed it's gotten worse lately. Your response to this question is exactly the problem. Ill informed and outright wrong advice without any hint of uncertainty.

I know you're a good contributor, which is why I ask you to reevaluate this sort of answer. It is not a good thing for the reference desk. Several revisions of the RD/M page contained personally identifying information about a registered editor of a type that is not allowed. Your edit summary inadvertently revealed the same information. I reported these revisions to the oversight team and they were suppressed in accordance with the oversight policy. Some confusion may have arisen due to the fact that it took a while to get everything cleared up (and there is an apparent MediaWiki software bug), but mostly due to the fact that some/one self-appointed detective decided to engage in idle speculation about what is in fact a quite standard process executed many times a day across the project. My uncle's computer got Google Chrome

I'm not doing this at home, but I don't think I need to.

Using Internet Explorer (don't know what version) my uncle's computer was slower than I remember. And on the Asheville Citizen-Times web site, it was a nightmare. I've been thinking about asking about this site on the computing reference desk, but I probably won't run into anyone there who ends up having the same problem. And on that computer even the Sun News of Myrtle Beach was constantly freezing up. I don't have that problem at home, and I never go to the Citizen-Times at home since I can see their articles two or three days later, whereas the Sun News makes me enter the topic for the article I'm searching for if it's more than a day old, which is impossible if I don't know what articles they published.

While I was dealing with the nightmare, my cousin and his wife came in saying they needed to install the new device they got so my uncle could use his new iPad. I took the local newspaper into another room and read it while I was waiting. Just so you'll know, I don't like being in a room with a lot of people, but being in the same house sort of lets me feel like I'm with the family. And I was with them for opening of presents.

I came back and things looked totally different. I don't know why they had done this, but the computer had Google Chrome. It was like night and day. Everything was so FAST and EASY--even on the Citizen-Times! But I feel I would have more problems at home with an unfamiliar browser than I am having now with Explorer. Yahoo mail gave me a whole new set of problems and I had to virtually quit using it. So I actually have few problems at home. I only go to the newspaper web sites if the college library is not open. Just so you'll know, the computer I usually used there since I wasn't a student finally quit working and it has a sign on it (and now they don't care which computer I use, though if the usual one was being temperamental they let me change). It was pretty old. All their computers are Mozilla Firefox and they generally work much better than the one that quit working,though Explorer is an option on one--turns out that's not a good idea.Vchimpanzee · talk · contributions · 21:12, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Also, I heard my uncle say he was told not to get Norton AntiVirus because it checks everything, slowing the computer down. I don't know if that was the problem, but I know my Norton Antivirus at home isn't like that. Regarding wireless bandwidth limiting

Dear Comet Tuttle:

Thank you for your reply to my original post on June 1. I had been very busy over the past couple of days taking my godparents sightseeing around Canada and the States, so I have neglected to check back on this issue.

To make the long story short, my ISP is Bell Canada (known simply as "Bell" in Canada), Toronto to be specific. I have recently changed my plan to Bell's Fibe 15/10 because the discount on my old plan is set to expire at the end of May. As a result of the change Bell sent a technician to my home to do a bunch of new wiring, in the process the technician also took away my old 2wire DSL modem, which had the capability of limiting the speed of incoming wireless connections down to 1 mbps, and replaced it with a new, big, black DSL modem which did not have such an option in its 192.168.2.1 settings page.

I also would like to correct an error in my original post: I talked to another Bell technician who corrected my saying "bandwidth limiting" -- the technician said that no modem/router is capable of limiting bandwidth, which is the total amount of data that my tenants use over a given period of time, and that when I say "bandwidth limiting", I really mean "connection speed limiting", so I would just like to make that correction here.
