Great catch of that typo! It's been there since Ed Poor uploaded Jimbo's remarks from his weblog.... I'm amazed that I reverted vandalism and yet perpetuated the typo. Mamawrites 17:55, 20 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I think the point you make re different categories of user (in Votes for deletion/Mark Kobayashi-Hillary) is very useful. There's a distinction between serious authors of non-fiction (and indeed fiction) and entertainment where a fan-base exists (e.g. all the summaries of Harry Potter, individual TV episodes etc). Indian National Congress - IT Cell

[edit]

Dear Wikipedia Administrator,

I am Juan Rosario DeCunha and it was me who wrote this article in Wikipedia. I am a member of Indian national congress- IT cell,a sister organization of Indian National Congress, the largest political party of India and world.

I wrote the article mentioned in subject about my organization - Indian National congress- IT cell, which is a sister organization of Indian National Congress or simply Congress (I).

My intention to wrote that article was to give some information about the IT cell of Indian National Congress and there by to attract many IT professionals to this organization. It will help them to solve their problems as INC - IT Cell is part of India's ruling party.

I like to inform you that Indian National Congress produced great leaders liek Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Lal Bahadur Shastri, Sardar Vallabhai Patel, Subhash Chandra Bose, Ambedkar, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Lokmanya Tilka etc. By deleting an article related to Idnian National Congress, your encyclopedia is huring the sentiments of Indian National Congress, and the common peoples of India.

Hence I request you to keep my article in your Encyclopedia. It will benefit peoples in other parts of the world to learn more ablout india and Indian peoples. This article will give valuable informations to the peoples outside India about Indian History, Politics, Culture, Leaders, etc.

USS Evans (DE-1023)

[edit]

Hi. I have removed the speedy tag from USS Evans (DE-1023) and made it into a redirect to USS Frank E. Evans (DD-754). A condition of the GFDL is that we track source and authorship. Deleting a page you have copied text from would violate this. Cheers, Bovlb 08:52:40, 2005-08-31 (UTC)

I agree that the fact that they are (or appear to be) different ships is problematic. Maybe redirecting to the talk page would be better. Bovlb 09:33:54, 2005-08-31 (UTC)

WP:CP

[edit]

I can't find matching text in this article vs the webpage. I've removed the tag, please readd with more specificity if it is a copyvio. Sorry. (Pardon the brusqueness, I'm clearing out a gigantic backlog) JesseW 20:05, 31 August 2005 (UTC)

Copyvios

[edit]

They can't be speedily deleted; you might think it a waste of time, but it's much more of a waste for the admin to have to remove the text and implement the copyvio procedure... --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 10:26, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion makes clear, copyvios don't meet the criteria. That's especially important when the source text isn't available for admins to check. There's a proposal to allow obvious copyvios to be speedied, but that also limits the cases to on-line sopurces (and hasn't been passed yet). --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 15:19, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Any admin who speedied an article that didn't meet the criteria, especially on the grounds that it was a copyvio that can't be easily checked, would probably find herself being questioned and criticised (and rightly so; I'm sure that you're wholly honourable in this, but anyone could claim that an article violated copyright in that way). --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 22:36, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

China...abortions and Pat Robertson

[edit]

I edited out this piece on China and abortions from the Pat Robertson article:

"It has since been speculated that as founder of the Zhaodaole China Internet portal and part-owner of a cable network in China, Robertson was unwilling to risk straining relations with the Chinese government. [2]"

It has since been...'SPECULATED'?????

And the crackpot rightwing WelchReport (check out his site when you get the chance) doing the speculation, is HARDLY a viable source of news much less speculation.

Moses Israel

He hadn't used much his father's surname either, that's why the name given to him upon his birth is in parentheses. It's a judgement call if that name should be in the article. I'd say, why not? --Barbatus 21:15, 21 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

Very interested to recieve your message. Could you refer me to the article concerned? I am worried that the article in question was edited/created by someone other than myself.

Thanks.

Thanks for pointing out similarly name articles, I think they should be different as one (should be) about an individual's clinical enounters and the other raises administrative issues. I agree though that both articles currently discuss both aspects. I have started a relevant discussion section Talk:Medical record#re merge suggestion with Medical records. PS I added the {mergeto} counterpart tag in 'Medical records' to the {mergefrom} tag you added to 'Medical record'  :-) - David Rubentalk 11:56, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Latasha threw punches?

[edit]

Latasha swung after the korean grabbed her purse. Now think about it: a black grabs a korean's purse. The korean defends herself. As the korean is walking away, the black blows out the back of her head. Probation?

This is the Latasha Harlins murder in reverse.

Stop being such empty-minded bigots. That korean should still be sitting in jail. Instead she got probation from racists aiming to play stupid koreans against blacks. That korean is one of the reasons I don't patronize korean businesses to this day, and I encourage other blacks to follow suit.

WP:CP

[edit]

Hi, you've reported copyright infringements to WP:CP in the last week, a new measure was recently passed to allow the speedy deltion of new pages that are cut and paste copyvios. Please follow these instructions if you come across this type of copyvio. Thanks. --nixie 00:09, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Blatant copyright infringements may now be "speedied"

If an article and all its revisions are unquestionably copied from the website of a commercial content provider and there is no assertion of permission, ownership or fair use and none seems likely, and the article is less than 48 hours old, it may be speedily deleted. See CSD A8 for full conditions.

After notifying the uploading editor by using wording similar to:

{{nothanks-sd|pg=page name|url=url of source}} -- ~~~~

Blank the page and replace the text with

{{db-copyvio|url=url of source}}

to the article in question, leaving the content visible. An administrator will examine the article and decide whether to speedily delete it or not.

I went to the Town and Country area last night to check out restaurants. I've eaten at the restaurants in Town and Country and they weren't that great, ao I wanted to find us somewhere nearby. There is a nice but expensive steak house down the street, but I don't know what everyone's budget is. I picked this place, I hope it is OK with everyone:

  • 7:00pm Tuesday October 18th
  • 24-Hour Valley Kitchen Family Restaurant
  • 875 Hotel Circle South, Mission Valley, 619-819-1017 or 619-298-8282.
  • It is right across Highway 8 from the Town and Country Resort and Convention Center
  • It is very casual and comes highly recommended by the hotel desk. Entrees are $8-$15. They have a wide menu: They have breakfast all-days, salads, burgers, steaks, echilladas, pies, that sort of place.

If I can call upon your assistance once again, could you see what you can find for a death date for Ferdinand Pecora of New York. I have a bio on him ready to post to Wikipedia but only have an incomplete death date of January 1972 from the SSDI while another source says December 7, 1971. - Ted Wilkes 17:16, 6 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Got the e-mail but the PDF came through as a URL link that when I opened required an account name and password. Seeing as it is his obit, I used his death date you gave me for the article but there was a difference in the birth day so I used the SSDI with a note on the Talk page. Again, thanks a lot for the help. - 19:51, 6 November 2005 (UTC)

I hope I'm not taking too much advantage of your generosity but I have two more individuals I'm looking for full dates of birth/death on and cemetery, if available:

  1. Charles D. Barney - Wall Steert broker, co-founder of Smith Barney and Jay Cooke's son-in-law (the D. is important to segrate him from Charles T. Barney, a Wall Street thief.)
  1. Charles Hayden (1870-1937), financier and philanthropist (Charles Hayden Foundation) who founded the brokerage firms of Hayden, Stone & Co. and Haystone Securities Corporation of Boston and New York City.

Thanks again. There is no hurry on this. - Ted Wilkes 12:32, 8 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

newspapers & magazines

[edit]

Hi! as you may have noticed, I added my name to the newspapers & magazines request service.. I came across an announcement for it somewhere and I think it's a great idea. This is also the kind of thing I do for a living, although any research I do will be only on my own time and for my "personal use" to avoid violating license agreements, as I suspect is the case for all of us, since most universities provide content for the users of those universities only :) Anyway, I have access to pretty much any database there is, since I can access the libraries of two major universities. If you can't find something, ask and I'll let you know if I have it. One thing --I was wondering if you've thought about how to address dividing up questions/requests if the service gets popular? Maybe by adding your name under a question if you're working on something? I guess we'll see if it gets busy before it really becomes an issue. Cheers - Brassratgirl 01:39, 13 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ride is Right!

[edit]

Researching this tragic event and Cannot believe the verdict. This cannot be 'spun' towards any sympathy for Soon Ja Du. Primarily because she invited physical retailiation by putting her hands on Latasha first. Up until the point a person does that, there is no aggressor. The first person to initiate physical contact is "asking for it." Soon's age, height, weight, etc. are truly so irrelevant in this case -- if she was so old [and 49 is NOT old], frail, etc. why initiate physical contact with a teenager? What are you thinking? Apparently that if it gets too out of hand, you'll just go get the gun and shoot her. Maybe that's why she had no fear of disrespecting Latasha's personal space and provoking Latasha to retaliate by punching her in the face. The force of the blows are irrelevant and we find they only leave "superficial" marks (not even 'scars)--so there goes that argument. If YOU start it, I can justifiable KILL you because I bit off more than I could chew in the first place? ["she punched her really hard!" Please.] If she had hit the Korean woman first, it could be argued that she was fearful or something more rational, but as it actually did happen -- No. The fact that Americans want to justify and make excuses for a GROWN WOMAN attacking an CHILD and TAKING HER LIFE, is a sorry commentary on racism in America in general and the value of Black Life in specific.

Myth of Good Quality

[edit]
The mission of Wikipedia is to provide a useful resource, not to campaign for prestige. Users should be made aware of the mechanism that creates this encyclopedia, and articles like Seigenthaler's tend to create more attention, and, as a by product, more participation. It's not a blow, it's an opportunity. Dystopos 04:56, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
If we can't maintain the myth of good quality -- how can we expect to grow or keep current visitors? Lotsofissues 22:40, 5 December 2005 (UTC)
It would be fraudulent for us to mask the messiness of Wikipedia for the purpose of gaining prestige. The fact is that the level of quality here is very uneven and always changing. Casual visitors need to be aware of how this encyclopedia is built and be able to make informed decisions about its trustworthiness. I would never recommend Wikipedia as an authoritative reference source. On the other hand it is a VERY convenient and comprehensive source of basic information and context, from which deeper researches can set out. As for attracting users, I myself started editing because of what I perceived Wikipedia to LACK rather than what it offered. Dystopos 23:09, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Mrs. John Wood birthdate

[edit]

Hi, Lotsofissues. Where did you find the source for your birth and death dates for Mrs. John Wood? The only source I could find on them was the book by Vera Mowry Roberts. She gives dates of 1821—1915, then says that Wood was 83 when she died. I used those dates without checking them, but anyone who does the math can see they're wrong. The only other source I could find that listed dates is this website, which gives a birth year of "c. 1836". Where did you find the dates? Thanks. —BrianSmithson 22:48, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I found my info from the ODNB, the standard reference on British ppl.
Here are the first sentences:
Wood [née Vining], Matilda Charlotte [known as Mrs John Wood] (bap. 1831, d. 1915), actress and theatre manager, was baptized on 28 November 1831 at St Peter's Church, Liverpool, the second daughter of the actors Henry Vining and Amelia Vining, née Quantrell (1803/4–1874) [see Vining family]. Despite going on the stage when she was ten, Matilda Vining, whose ‘forte was low comedy’ (ILN, 28 Feb 1885), came to prominence in England only in the late 1860s after gaining a reputation in America, principally in burlesque, and reached the height of her success in the 1880s in farces by Pinero. Her first stage appearance was in 1841 in Brighton.
Lotsofissues 23:58, 8 December 2005 (UTC)
[Moved here to avoid fragmentation.] Thanks for the pointer. I'll see if the local library has that book to check the facts in the rest of the article. I wrote the thing to kill a red link, and the only sources I had available to me were those on Google Print. Let's hope they had at least mostly good information . . . . —BrianSmithson 00:40, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

BUSINESS PROPOSAL

[edit]

GOOD DAY,

I write to you based on a request by an investor and his need for investment funding in your country. My name is Dr.Anthoney Wali. a financial consultant and I work with a reputable financial services firm. My company most times represents the interests of very wealthy investors. Due to the sensitivity of the position they hold in thier society and the unstable investment environment of their country, they evacuate majority of their funds into more stable economies and developed nations where they can get good yield for their money. I was recently approached by a Reserved Client, whom I had personally worked with a few years ago with a proposal. What he request is an individual such as yourself, who will be willing to receive money on his behalf abroad, and put it to good use for a period not exceeding 6 years for a start. The client has offered these terms: 1. 10% commission paid to me and my foreign partner of the total funds successfully evacuated. The funds in question are over ($ 6, Million) US Dollars. 2. The funds will be used by the foreign partner for six years as a loan without any interest. That is, you do not pay any interest on the money but you give the client 50% of all profits after tax that accrued from the use of the funds. If these terms are agreeable to you, kindly let me know and I will provide you with all necessary information and procedures. The client is willing to make available the fund to your possession and in your country within 6days of confirmation of your capabilities.

Sincerely yours, Dr.Anthony Wali.

US Navy Ranks and Rates

[edit]

"Rate" is a specific job, such as Boatswain's Mate (BM); this term applies ONLY to enlisted. However, "Rank" is how high into the organization you are, such as Seaman, Fireman, Petty Officer, Cheif Petty Officer; These are enlisted ranks. Warant Officer and Commision Officers are, as the title implies, officers.

Roosevelt University

[edit]

I think that you screwed up the Roosevelt University web page. You chopped off important information such as campuses(from two down to only one campus) and the school history. Also your new arrangement is very bad. Pictures are out off place. I personally see nothing wrong with copying and pasting key information from its official web site because those are facts besides they are not copyright. We cannot create a new history of this school or divide to different campuses as we want. I am wondering to make thing simpilify why we bother to write about this school in wikipedia. Would it be better to put the link to its official web site and let people browse the whole school web and read from there? We should do the same to every school also.

I know you're trying to do the right thing by cleaning up vandalism on Wikipedia, but you got it wrong with this edit. I would suggest doing a little bit more investigative work before assuming something is vandalism, even if it looks wrong. Mrs. Barnett moved to the high school and (the late) Hap Holander was promoted to teacher-principal in the junior high. In 1962/63, Mr. Robert Keefaurer joined the staff as assistant principal.

the administration offices were staffed by Mrs. Toon, Mrs Perdue and Mrs Betty Coroner

with the help of Shirley Vincent, Patricia Sudsbury and Julia Reid in clerical positions. Cyril Alexander was the supply clerk at the time. Mr Kidd (elementary school principal) was transferred to Japan and Mr L.E. Davis was the new Principal. In 1964/65 John Middleton became the assistant high school principal and in the administration offices were Mrs. Saul, Mrs. Title, Miss Barnes and Cyril Alexander.

In 1964/65, Greg Hastings was the physical education teacher and coach at the high school and his bride to be was a fourth grade teacher in the elementary school. They were married shortly after leaving the base and are now living in Wilson, North Carolina where Greg is Director of Teacher Education at Atlantic Christian College and Connie is Director of the Children's Center at Wilson County Technical College.

Mrs Edith Raymond taught in the high school in the late 50's and later taught for three years (grade 7&8) in Indiana and 16 years in West Point, Mississippi where she retired in 1980 and is now living on a small farm. Mrs. Barnett returned and Mr. Steve Davis joined the elementary middle school as the audio-visual director.

Your comments at Bkonrad's page re the Cooley Law article

[edit]
  • A response to your comments on Bkonrad's user page...Even if the more recent (post feces) edits are coordinated, they have been based upon valid wikipedia rationales. For example, some discussion of the motto issue is supported by statements of Brennan himself, as shown by a link to the Cooley website -- the correct response here is to edit this section, not delete it. Just because there is a coordinated effort to work on the Cooley page does not make this trolling or vandalism -- the recent edits have seemed decidedly good faith. Corrections

[edit]

What is listed here is the Navy Rank structure, not rates. Enlisted personnel have a rate and a rank. Rate refers to their job specialy and rank refers to their paygrade. For example, I am a FCC. This equates to Chief Fire Controlman or Fire Control Chief Petty Officer. Also, you would refer to a particular person as Petty Officer, or you can use their rate/rank if known. For example, Petty Officer Jones or FC3 Jones. The latter is only used when you know the persons rate. Many times the rating is not known, but the rank is usually always known. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.197.192.10 (talkcontribs)

He has always presented an overall fair view of both sides of the conflicts he has visited and his views and opinions are usually dead on. There are a number of reasons many of the worlds Intel agencies and Fortune 500 companies subscibe to his books and views.

The fact that he is a Royal National Geographic Society Fellow should be reason enough to trust his writing and opinions.

Ideas and observations made outside of the corporate news entities are slowly becoming a thing of the past and less and less available to those of us that look to independent journalism to inform us on what is really happening in the world. The "non-sexy, in vogue" stories, issues, and places in need of our attention are what Mr. Pelton has made a career of focusing on and illuminating through his books, articles, and reports. Deleting his entry from Wikipedia, is fully contrary to what Wikipedia is about; a site based around the idea of community, the ideal of which as described by its founder as, "Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing,"

Do not delete this entry.

Keep Robert Young Pelton

[edit]

I believe he is an author who serves an under-represented community of travelers who wish to see parts of the world where everything is NOT carved out of Cheese and spalshed with chardonnay. His type of travel is the type that causes serious introspection to those who have the heart to dare. His forum is a public place where anyone with an opinion is allowed to post. You cannot fault this man for the few "wanna-bes" posting there and spewing what at times seems to be irrelevant and non-travel related advice. At the Black Flag Cafe, those who are dedicated to learning more about adventure travel and how to stay as safe as humanly possible on such trips, can find many useful tips on how to as Robert Pelton puts it, "Come Back Alive". It would be a shame that a widely regarded online encyclopedia such as this one would take this man out of its tomes on the basis of a few reckless heclers on the Black Flag Cafe's forum. You might not see up front the honest and awe-inspiring stories offered by those who are members of the site and do truly travel, but at the same time maybe it is time that someone with this organization take the time to read between the lines. One thing I have learned from Mr. Peltons books and from beginning to travel as he does is that not everything is as black and white as it appears at first glance. Rather it is in the grey areas where you can find the best of what a forum such as the BFC represents. Happy Editing. 70.7.56.197 23:06, 21 August 2006 (UTC)dawn[reply]

RYP Article

[edit]

Other than being a little on the short side the article seems fine to me. I don't see the self promotion or any other real issues that warrant deletion. 24.206.173.75 23:33, 21 August 2006 (UTC)-AFG[reply]

Keep RYP Article

Certainly reading RYP has given me insight into many sits throughout the world. Advice on travelling in his books is also great for anyone who does more travelling than the 1 week exclusive resort stays in Jamaica.

SF meetup

[edit]

Hey there! What was up with the San Francisco meetup? Was it advertised at all? What about another more general-purpose meetup in the Bay Area later on in the Fall? best, phoebe 00:05, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Research request

[edit]

Hi there. I've added a new request on Wikipedia:Newspapers and magazines request service - as one of the primary responders, I thought I'd drop you a quick note in case you didn't have that page watchlisted. Thanks in advance. (By the way, I have also asked Brassratgirl.) --OpenToppedBus - Talk to the driver 12:19, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, about six months ago you moved it from the mainspace to a subpage on the project namespace on the grounds of lack of notability. Since then, the webpage was refered to in the main printed newspapers in at least three large Spanish speaking countries (Spain, Argentina and Chile). Even a senator of one of these countries refered to it. It's also one of the third most visited domain within wikia according to Alexa. Is it notable enough now? I know there are no notabilty standards defined for webpages. However, as someone who seems to be concerned with notability you may be able to give me some clues.--Rataube 16:15, 13 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Research request on Constance Holme

Hi, thanks for your message. Phoebe has said she'll look into this, and I don't want you duplicating work, so hold off for the moment - if by any chance she doesn't have a chance to do it, I may come back to you. --OpenToppedBus - Talk to the driver 11:27, 20 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

i love men

i have a question...

[edit]

are there any differences between the way in wich adults who return to the education sector, who have discontinued education years before, and those who have followed through with it and are normally younger? Or... does the learning style differ between adults and young people?

your signature

[edit]

It's generally preferred to use wikilinks to link to pages inside wikipedia, rather than full URLs. It makes for shorter syntax and makes it clear to people that they're staying in wikipedia, rather than going to a random URL anywhere on the web. If you want any help setting up your signature, just drop a message on my talk page. Night Gyr (talk/Oy) 05:45, 20 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
