WikiCup newsletter correction

[edit]

There was an error in the WikiCup 2020 March newsletter; United States L293D should not have been included in the list of top ten scorers in Round 1 (they led the list last year), instead, United States Dunkleosteus77 should have been included, having garnered 334 points from five good articles on animals, living or extinct, and various reviews. Re: Great to see you editing!

[edit]

Greetings and likewise to you! In fact, I was just about to upload some surface weather maps to accompany the article on the 1949 hurricane. Fortunately, I am currently living abroad out in the rural countryside, so I am relatively insulated from the 2019–20 coronavirus pandemic. I will certainly consider setting up the 1949 Florida hurricane for FA review shortly. Be well. CapeVerdeWave (talk) 14:41, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

On a related note, I am currently perusing the process of review for a current FA candidate, so that I may know how best to reformat the article. CapeVerdeWave (talk) 15:31, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

[edit]
The Barnstar of Diligence
You have probably gotten a few of these already, but you deserve another for all of your amazing edits, and hard work to make articles better constantly, so hats off to you :) Weatherman27 (talk) 15:57, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks so much Weatherman27 (talk · contribs)! I appreciate the kind words and the recognition, as it can be thankless sometimes. I hope you keep up your editing as well :) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:53, 21 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, just wanted to show my appreciation :) Weatherman27 (talk) 04:45, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The best way to show that appreciation, even more than barnstars, is becoming a writer yourself :) There are tons of articles that need work. Sometimes it's as basic as fixing a typo, or maybe you add a citation for something that was unsourced (meaning someone added content without verifying it). Wikipedia works best when it builds on its trust as an institution, and you can be a part of that too. What kind of weather articles are you interested in, @Weatherman27:? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:46, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, plan on writing lots, I am mostly interested in cyclones, (tropical and nontropical) but severe weather is interesting too. I also like the tropical cyclone seasons, and spend most of my time there.@Hurricanehink: Weatherman27 (talk) 16:29, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That's great! What basin, if you don't mind me asking? There are lots of season articles that could use some love, all around the world, and just over the last few years. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:48, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest, I kind of go between all of the basins, but I mostly visit the Atlantic and Wpac, and sometimes the Epac too.Weatherman27 (talk) 21:29, 22 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Are you looking for any projects in those basins, by chance? There are tons of articles that exist on those storms, and some can use a lot of love. There are also a handful of storms in each basin that could have their own article, but no one has tried/put in the research. Are you looking for an article like that, more recent or older storm? Just curious. I'm working on a storm in 2015 and one in 2007. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:55, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but I mostly am just studying the seasons, I am looking for a good storm to edit, and I am not sure which one to do. Weatherman27 (talk) 04:34, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So there are lots of options, and each has their limitations. For instance, Tropical Storm Lidia (2017) is largely done, but it's missing United States impact, and it might be missing some Spanish sources (no sé si puedes leer español). If you want to avoid any foreign languages, Tropical Storm Norma (1970) is mostly about flooding in Arizona. If you're just looking to get your feet wet and take a stab at improving a decent article, check out Hurricane Jose (2017), which is also largely done, but it can't hurt to do some spotchecks, fix formatting, and do a fresh Google search. The best part about editing is that it's all volunteer, so if you're thinking in your head "forget this random guy, I'd rather write about violins", then no worries. I'm a musician too, so I know what it's like to work with others, to improvise, to rest, and to scream when a string breaks and you want to rage quit :P ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:39, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, Thank you for the suggestions, I will definitely try and edit those. Lol, you're definitely right, I know what you mean about being a musician lol :) Weatherman27 (talk) 17:44, 23 March 2020 (UTC) I just added some info on Tropical Storm Norma (1970) so thank you for the suggestions :) Weatherman27 (talk) 18:04, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Us musicians and weather nerds gotta look out for each other in these crazy times. Are you looking for an article to work on and improve to good article status, or are you just getting your feet wet as an editor? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:32, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
yes indeed. I am kind of in between, I want to improve/create articles to go to the good article status, but I am still getting used to everything, if that makes an sense. Weatherman27 (talk) 21:47, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Then of the ones I recommended, Jose might be the easiest. At a quick glance, it looks the most done. The tricky part is figuring out what's missing, and how to incorporate new information. The best way is to experiment and put some time into researching it. I can help you out with the process if you want. I've only been writing on Wikipedia for 15 years :P ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:54, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

yeah sure, let's do it. Lol Weatherman27 (talk) 22:18, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Great! So it's not that difficult. There are three components to a good article. Is there enough info in the article, is it all cited, and is the writing good enough? For the first part, you'll have to do Google searches, and somewhat familiar with the subject. You might notice that the storm passed near some area, but the article might not have any info for the area. Or maybe you'd expect more impacts, and there might be more info out there. As for whether it's cited, make sure all of the links are working, that you don't source any blogs (or other unreliable sources), and the citation covers the information. So keep these in mind with whatever article you decide to do. I'll happily answer any questions you have with the process. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:03, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

okay, thank you for the info, I will definitely put it to good use and ask any questions. Weatherman27 (talk) 02:56, 24 March 2020 (UTC) I also added a few things on Hurricane Jose, but these are minor for now. Weatherman27 (talk) 15:23, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I saw your edits on Jose. It was decent, but watch out for the existing structure of the article. There are three paragraphs for US. The first is more of an overview, second is mid-Atlantic impacts, and third is New England. You added the Virginia bit to the New England section. also, it was good you added the reference for the TCR, but that was already used in the article. When that happens, you can type it out as:
<ref name="TCR"/> - you can name your references when you use them multiple times. Just a trick of the trade :) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:41, 24 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay thanks for the tips, I apologize, I am not familiar with the East Coast, also thanks for showing me how to do the ref's easier, I didn't know that until now, so thank you for that. Weatherman27 (talk) 03:17, 25 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No worries! That's what this is all about. You can't write about something unless you familiarize yourself with it, and that takes some time. Do you want me to move your bit about the Virginia storm surge, or do you want to? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 12:47, 25 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, makes sense. You can do it if you want. Thanks for the info and teaching me how to write articles better. Weatherman27 (talk) 15:01, 25 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Welcome

[edit]

So to answer, I don’t usually track things in the SWIO, rather the NATL and seldom the EPAC, but I wanted to see if I could possibly improve one of the lesser known and or underdeveloped basins (the SWIO). I also chose to start there because I wanted to see something fresh and different from most of the NATL TCs I may be familiar with (also, the SWIO and SHEM are both in season at the moment, giving me something to follow in the “off season”.) I didn’t necessarily have an intention of working on old/new storms in specific, but just clicked on a 1980s SWIO season and worked both forwards and backwards, filling in previous and recent seasons from then. I’m not exactly sure as to how long I’ll be working on filling in images for TCs in the SWIO, but I’d like to work on something perhaps more urgently needed at some point. Unfortunately I am busy with school though, but keep trucking I will do... Rd003 (talk) 03:56, 1 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey JavaHurricane (talk · contribs), it looks like someone removed the template, so things should be fine, right? Also, in the future, I think the project would be better served having a singular article for List of named storms (D), what do you think? [edit]

I can run the bot on all your articles for every link if you want me to in order to preserve them and prevent future decay. NoahTalk 14:51, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Hurricane Noah. Could the bot do that for every GA, A, and FA in the project? Is that too big of an undertaking? I don't really know how the bots work, so I wouldn't want you to do an absurd amount of work if it's time consuming, but it's very useful to make sure we don't lose links to the passage of time. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:56, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I could do it gradually over the course of a month. NoahTalk 14:59, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Damn that sounds time consuming. You might want to check if some bot can do that automated, so you don't have to manually do it. I'd rather see what you could do with a month of normal editing, not just menial link repair :P ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:06, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
check this out... I would have to run the bot for each article and it will automatically do it. I could probably get 3-5 done per minute tbh. NoahTalk 15:18, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ehh, just think of how many Rosas or Vicentes you could write in that time :P Your call if you're up for it. 3-5 per minute means you could do all of the FA's in 30–50 minutes. Again, your call if you want to do that. It would be nice, but I'm sure we can apply for a bot to do that so you don't have to do it semi-manually. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:22, 13 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Do you agree with my placement of NIO '19 as a vital article? NoahTalk 15:13, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I do! I'm not sure if any individual storm of 2019 belongs on the vital list - Pabuk, Fani, Kyarr, and Bulbul were somewhat notable on their own (especially Fani and Kyarr), but the record-breaking season is more notable as a whole. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:27, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Timelines/infoboxes

[edit]

Should we add a different color (of course compliant with accessibility) for subtropical storms. I think we should denote subtropical storms in a different color since the NHC does on their tracks. What do you think? I would be willing to make the changes. NoahTalk 15:11, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricane Noah, IDK, subtropical storms are pretty infrequent, and a majority of them do become tropical. Is there another color that would be natural? We've also been discussing updating the track maps (and making them interactive) on the talk page. Someone mentioned adding a symbol for remnant low/wave to make it four different symbols, but the intensity continues to be represented the same color regardless of category. I don't think it's needed to change the color for subtropical cyclones, personally, but I get the rationale. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:41, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We have the issue of some SSs having the same color as TS for their infobox because they are a storm, yet reached C1 with winds. One color would fix this issue and people wouldn't need to worry about it anymore. It would also make the transition to tropical more noted on interactive tracks as well. NoahTalk 15:50, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Should the non-tropical project be folded into our project as a taskforce since many of the non-tropical systems are cyclonic in nature? Many members of that project are also members of WPTC. I just feel like incorporating the two together makes a bit of sense. Everything else besides the ETs could go back into the Met project. Please note that I marked the project as defunct due to longstanding inactivity in it. Additionally, could you please let me know your thoughts on the comment I added about the grayscale for ETs? NoahTalk 17:22, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Hurricane Noah: If you really wanna go down that line: I personally feel that WPTC, Tornadoes, Floods, Windstorms etc should be taskforces under WP:Meteorology.Jason Rees (talk) 20:02, 27 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree Jason Rees about making the different projects as taskforces under WP:MET, at least at the moment. I don't think it would be worth all of the hassle to recategorize everything, dealing with the thousands of pages. Then again, it could foster some collaboration, such as dealing with floods in unusual areas, or formerly tropical cyclones that affect Europe as windstorms. Also, if WPTC was a task force of WP:MET, I'm not sure we can have a sub-task force for Atlantic, EPAC, seasons/storms, etc. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:22, 29 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2020 May newsletter

[edit]

The second round of the 2020 WikiCup has now finished. It was a high-scoring round and contestants needed 75 points to advance to round 3. There were some very impressive efforts in round 2, with the top ten contestants all scoring more than 500 points. A large number of the points came from the 12 featured articles and the 186 good articles achieved in total by contestants, and the 355 good article reviews they performed; the GAN backlog drive and the stay-at-home imperative during the COVID-19 pandemic may have been partially responsible for these impressive figures.

Our top scorers in round 2 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with 2333 points from one featured article, forty-five good articles, fourteen DYKs and plenty of bonus points
  • England Gog the Mild, with 1784 points from three featured articles, eight good articles, a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews and lots of bonus points
  • Botswana The Rambling Man, with 1262 points from two featured articles, eight good articles and a hundred good article reviews
  • Somerset Harrias, with 1141 points from two featured articles, three featured lists, ten good articles, nine DYKs and a substantial number of featured article and good article reviews
  • England Lee Vilenski with 869 points, Gondor Hog Farm with 801, Venezuela Kingsif with 719, Cascadia (independence movement) SounderBruce with 710, United States Dunkleosteus77 with 608 and Mexico MX with 515.

The rules for featured article reviews have been adjusted; reviews may cover three aspects of the article, content, images and sources, and contestants may receive points for each of these three types of review. Please also remember the requirement to mention the WikiCup when undertaking an FAR for which you intend to claim points. Remember also that DYKs cannot be claimed until they have appeared on the main page. Just a check up

[edit]

Hi and it has been a while, I guess. Well of course every other user is going back to edit more because of what's going on, so might as well leave one to you too since I barely see edits from you lately, unless I am in the wrong pages. How are you is all what I am going to say. And perhaps, even if I think that I have messaged you before about this, but tips for upgrading an article to a GA? Because I found out three of my articles I have created before are so close to becoming a GA after the criteria were failed to be done in a week and I want to do them because I have been here editing for years without improving an article. Typhoon2013 (talk) 05:06, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Typhoon2013: What article(s) are you looking at Typhoon? Also, Hink, I added a FAC for Dorian's Met. NoahTalk 22:07, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hink and @Hurricane Noah:, 2017's Tropical Storms Nanmadol, Pakhar and Haikui, and probably even the 2016 Nov Vietnam TD (even though there is discussion before of merging that article with the 2016 Dec TD since that caused more damages). Typhoon2013 (talk) 01:08, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Gordon

[edit]

I may need to use a lot of storm events database sources for Gordon since I couldn't find a lot for some areas. NoahTalk 17:27, 27 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That's OK, there are a lot of low-impacting storm articles that largely rely on NCDC, with an occasional news article and public statement to round out the article. Keep up the good work Hurricane Noah (talk · contribs)! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:59, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This may be an issue of waiting so long since it has 200M in damage. NoahTalk 01:05, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Whats wrong with using the Storm Data publication which is based on the Storm Events database.Jason Rees (talk) 01:14, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, I don't see the issue with using NCDC so much. A lot of articles are for low-impacting storms, but still worthy of articles. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:12, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Its better as in a way it makes verification of the information easier, gives the reader more hope that you have caught all of the siginifcant impact, saves having 10 million references and duplicating events. For example the NCDC gives 5 seperate entries for Vicky/Wasi in the storm events database, where as storm data when its eventually published by NCDC will list them all.Jason Rees (talk) 23:47, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think it'll be 10 million references. Noah, as long as you list the event report and the state, people will be able to find it. Like, Alabama Severe Wind Event Report, or something like that to differentiate the many refs. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:06, 29 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, not 10M but there could be a decent number given the size of the impact. NoahTalk 22:43, 30 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OK? I'm just wondering what I can do to help. You never really asked a question. I'm not sure why it's on my talk page. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:52, 31 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't have continued replying on this had Jason not replied. Anyways, where would you recommend a split on Vicente's impact? I think it would be better for someone else to point as to where this split should go. NoahTalk 19:40, 3 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
LOL no worries. As for Vicente, I split up Oaxaca where I thought it would be natural. Let me know if you disagree, or just feel free to change it, but I started with an overview (+deaths), then detailed impacts, then the aftermath. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 13:49, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
also, I’m probably about to have my FAC fail. NoahTalk 14:04, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Aww! Your first FAC fail (maybe). Don't be downtrodden. I just withdrew my FAC today - too much to do and focus on these days. The important thing is that you don't get burned out, and that editing is still fun. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:11, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

the issue with mine is nobody has reviewed it so it is going to fail for that reason. NoahTalk 14:12, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, been there. It's not always easy getting reviewers. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:12, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Rosa was my first failure. NoahTalk 17:21, 4 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Don't even think of it as a failure (and I forgot about Rosa). Rosa you got passed on your second time around. One of the hardest parts of getting an FA is getting enough reviews, so what I usually do is review other people's FACs and point them to my FAC, asking if they wouldn't remind reviewing. It's not technically canvassing, and you shouldn't ask people to just support your FAC blindly, that denigrates the process. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 13:26, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

2018 PHS

[edit]

Would you mind closing Vicente's A class review? I dont think it is really important that it stays open. NoahTalk 20:51, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
An additional item.... What should I do for the season article besides expand the storm met/impact coverage (more the latter)? I now have all the TCRs. This is my first season article so I am looking for guidance here. NoahTalk 20:53, 11 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Re Hurricane Noah, season articles should have general meteorological conditions. I'm not sure if the seasonal summary needs to mention every storm individually, more so the activity by month, and any records. You'll need a source for the highest ACE in the basin, and the bit about multiple C5's. For the storm sections, imagine that they are the leads of the individual articles, so keep it short and condensed. Most of the hurricanes could get two paragraph sections. Some sections are too lengthy in the MH, like Lane or Olivia, without talking about the impacts at all. Be sure to cover the impacts for low-impact storms, like Tara or Xavier, which might have more out there. Hope that helps! Keep up the good work editing Noah. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:43, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
How large should the prose of such an article be? I know 2015 is 61k, but this season had more impact. Also, Do you think Willa could get three para considering how bad the impact and aftermath were? NoahTalk 16:00, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure, just make sure you don't go overboard with any of the sections (since there are so many sub-articles). Even Willa would probably be fine with just two paragraphs, but you could do three (ditto Lane). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:49, 12 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
User:Hurricane_Noah/2018_EPAC#Hurricane_Bud Is this a good summary of Bud? This was what I envisioned with it and other storms. Bud didnt do much though. NoahTalk 15:31, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That looks like a decent summary, but the bit about the wildfires seems kinda vague. Go into just a tad more detail. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:56, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I checked on Xavier and Tara and didnt find anything important... NoahTalk 21:29, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, those were the only ones I thought had a chance for a bit more. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:15, 15 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Would you be willing to be a co-nominator for Willa with KN and myself after your two week period ends in two days? NoahTalk 02:44, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Noah, sure! I've been busy with RL the past month (hence why my editing spree came to a halt), but I should have time for a co-nom. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:14, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I inserted the other table into Willa's article so I could make all the refs consistent... the final tally is a 28.1k prose, 105k total byte article. NoahTalk 00:09, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nice! That's a solid length for an EPAC article. Great work on it Noah, you should be proud. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 13:19, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There's still a lot to do. Timeline needs a lot of work. I am trying to fix up the season article as I get time. NoahTalk 13:47, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I decided to be bold and create 2018 FT task force to better organize the effort for getting the topic. NoahTalk 04:06, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Great idea Noah! I'm glad you're taking the initiative on that. We tried in the past doing a global GT/FT for 2002, but the collaboration kinda fell apart due to lack of drive (plus SHEM articles). I have a busy summer ahead, so I'll help out when I can. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:38, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
What NIO storms still need articles? Java mentioned Pethai and I know Titli could probably use one. What about that depression that killed nearly 70? Just curious to see where we stand for the basins. NoahTalk 16:30, 20 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Titli, yes, and Phethai probably, maybe Daye. Depressions are always iffy. I've talked about this with Jason Rees a few times, whether it would be better to have a generic India flood article for some of these depressions. Few have any sort of substantive met history, and are usually covered in news reports as part of the monsoon. Also, India is so populated that 69 deaths in a flood doesn't mean it's necessarily article worthy, it'll depend what info is out there, but more than likely yes. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:21, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
How is my draft looking so far? NoahTalk 11:23, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
so far, so good, just make sure the sections aren’t One really long paragraph. Some of them can probably be split into two paragraphs. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 12:00, 26 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That can be resolved at the GAN if the reviewer feels the need for splitting. The two page synopsis storms will get a split of course, but I will leave the others alone for now. We are making solid progress on the global effort. My goal is to drop wikiwork below 3.00 by the end of this year... It will require a drop of 18 wikiwork in addition to the FAC + 2 pending WPAC GANs! We can do this! (Keep in mind the 2018 PHS and timeline would eliminate 7) NoahTalk 16:07, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, 2018 is making some good progress. I might have someone who wants to help work on Hurricane Michael. A few big collaborations will help get the big 2018 storms done. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:06, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Modulated Rotation? I have talked with him. NoahTalk 00:26, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
My goal is to add in more storms over the next few days. For the summary, it should discuss the activity by month and cover records? NoahTalk 20:51, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. I'd include both monthly activity and records in the summary. Just remember, there's a lead, there's a season summary, and then the storm section, so you don't have to repeat too much in the summary. Broader is better. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:50, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Just to state where it is at... I have 12.66 storms (Norman is like 1/3 done), the season summary, and the lead left... Everything else is done, updated/rewritten, and sourced. My goal today is to get the storms down to 9-10. NoahTalk 15:38, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I had been a bit burnt out from editing (thanks to RL), but one of my goals upon returning was doing a few FA reviews to hopefully get a few reviews for Willa. Sounds like you have 2018 PHS in pretty good shape. I saw Hurricaneboy working on Cyclone Ava. I'm starting to work on the 2018 NIO season article. So 2018 GT is progressing. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:05, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

That's good... I invited him to join the task force and chat. SHEM is in bad shape right now. The 2018 SHEM articles round down to the orange start color right now. EPAC, ATL, and NIO are off-setting the WPAC and SHEM, allowing the global to appear as B class. Further decreases will be largely dependent on progress in WPAC and SHEM. A NIO GT would help a bit, but it and EPAC have already shed most of their work. Same thing with the FT I am still working on.. Most of the work has been eliminated through hard work, but more still needs done. NoahTalk 19:32, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You just gotta find editors and encourage them to work on 2018 storms, and hope they can at least get them to GA status. Maybe reach out to any other editors while the tropics are temporarily quiet? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 21:08, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I could try to find more editors... Anyways, I found out I could use the page tool for my draft. NoahTalk 21:11, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nice. And I mean more editors like plucking out anyone who seems competent in writing but hasn't taken to article writing yet. Those are the users that we need to get interested in writing. That will make the global GT progress a lot quicker. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 12:52, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I will try to get Hector and Ileana done today... possibly Lane. I have to mow the lawn and do some weedeating this afternoon though. I work 7-3 tomorrow so I will be limited on what I can do then. I may have to do 1 storm per day that I work. Writing a season article this large is just very time consuming. Most of it is done (storm-wise) by this point. One surprising thing is that Miriam had a lot to cover. The synoptic history was the same size as Norman! NoahTalk 15:42, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I bet! Yea, doing season articles can take a long time, because you have to still summarize a storm but still be comprehensive. I wouldn't have expected Miriam to be so long, but yea, it was a basin crosser. For 2018 NIO, I'm gonna start with the sections for the storms that have articles, and simultaneously work to improve them (possibly bringing Sagar, Mekunu, and Luban to FA). Then I'll get to Titli and the other potential articles for storms affecting India. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:23, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Now I have chosen to make mine more detailed than the average, but I largely am not discussing storm structure/finer details. NoahTalk 21:58, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like you're going for another FA with that level of detail :P :) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:18, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
My goal is to get the wikiwork down to either 0.07 or 0.00... Depends on whether I can find more for Bud. Also, you looked at the draft? NoahTalk 22:08, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yea I saw the draft. A few sections look like they should still be split into two paragraphs (Aletta, Fabio, Kristy, John, and Xavier). Hector could probably be a bit shorter since it has a sub-article, no need for four paragraphs. Carlotta's section should probably be shorter too, it also has a sub-article and its MH was pretty short. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:33, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I can do the splitting, but would you be willing to trim those MHs? I would look at Lane's too. I feel a fresh set of eyes would better for that sort of thing. There may be more later as I write up the rest of the storms, but it will be a while. NoahTalk 19:22, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If you would be willing to use a pair of shears to cut down mets, I could finish all the impact storm mets now and deal with the preps, impact, and aftermath (in the case of Lane, Willa, and 19-E) later. I was spent after working on Dorian's met during the afternoon. NoahTalk 22:17, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am busy this weekend and done editing for the night. You should try re-writing sentences by combining ideas and using more advanced satin structures. That should be a specially doable for EPAC storms, which are fairly routine. A tropical wave enters the Pacific ocean, it reaches peak intensity while moving in some sort of west and north trajectory, and eventually reaches colder waters and dies out. The beauty of writing is that you can perfect your prose, conveying your ideas in the fewest necessary words. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 22:48, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for what you did this morning. I had no free time all day :P.... Anyways, I will be announcing very shortly what the planned awards are for participation/work in the topic. I plan to do something similar to the GAN backlog project, except there will be some points attached. Im thinking there could be some barnstars for basin work if someone worked on at least x number of articles. NoahTalk 00:11, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm taking care of a sick family member right now and don't really have a lot of time to wiki right now. Hopefully things get better in the next few days. NoahTalk 13:26, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oof sorry to hear about your family member, I hope (s)he recovers. I'll get back to copyediting 2018 PHS when I can, but in the meantime, what else has to be done for Willa? I was thinking about the aftermath (and the criticism), do you think the aftermath should be re-organized? Maybe top-level aftermath first (overall/federal government) then go state by state? ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:38, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I discovered the source credited "criticism" was for the mattresses delivered after 19-E rather than Willa. Additionally, the organization was a Sinaloa state one rather than Mexican federal gov't. So really, the only thing regarding the federal gov't is that people said they felt abandoned and some shady stuff happened. NoahTalk 20:20, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Re Hurricane Noah, yea, that's pretty common. Congrats btw on the Dorian MH FA! BTW, you might be wondering why I haven't been editing as much lately. Partly it's being busy, but also part of it is that my hands have been rather sore lately. My hands are borderline affected by Carpal tunnel syndrome, so sometimes my wrists get rather weak (especially if I've been doing a lot of manual labor), and I can't do as much typing. I didn't want to give the impression to you or anyone else that I've been flaking out on editing. Once my hands are in better shape, I should be able to resume 2018 NIO. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:34, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This season article is definitely a large endeavor... I plan to start work again tomorrow. I need to get all of the mets done by tomorrow or Wednesday. Thanks for trimming down several a while ago. I'm sure that most of them will need it. I don't think the impacts (at least thus far) are overdone though. NoahTalk 02:19, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I put Willa's "little brother" up for FAC today. I will try to work on writing mets tonight. NoahTalk 20:51, 21 July 2020 (UTC) I just wanted to let you know that KN and I discussed the WPAC today. We decided on making two subarticles for Mangkhut; Met history and Effects in Philippines will be created. This will bring the WPAC article total to 23 for the 2018 season. NoahTalk 14:41, 22 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

SMN/Conagua decided to change URLs and killed all their monthly climate reports so I had to fix every instance throughout the 2018 EPAC FAs. I should be able to get the season article done by tomorrow. I'm breaking for lunch now and will come back to get Sergio and Nineteen-E, and maybe Lane done. I must say it is impossible to have a season article without a lot of text when you have numerous storms, long lasting storms, and this many impactful ones. Additionally, Ileana was chosen as TFA for August 21 I think. NoahTalk 15:12, 27 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Damn, that's always annoying when the URLs break. And yup, I've done a few season articles, they're always a ton of work to do, since you gotta get every storm, and every area affected, in every month, across the entire basin. You think PHS was fun? Imagine a typhoon season ._. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:36, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Would you be able to help with Willa's SR today? I did some last night and KN did a bit this morning. I plan to attack it again this afternoon or evening. NoahTalk 14:43, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'll try to tonight. I'm at work now and can't edit much. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:17, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If you could find anything else to establish credibility for those two sources, that would be great. I am working on translating all those titles. NoahTalk 21:58, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Also, what do you mean "No love for EPAC"? Haven't I given it some love? :P... Willa is getting closer, but will need a bit more love to push it over the edge. I am planning to have Hector, Walaka, Olivia, and Bud up for ACR during this month as some things have changed with them. Also, the first two really didn't get reviewed adequately. I didn't see it then as I was new, but I can see it now. Hector is 1/2 way through its rewrite. The record there in regards to it having the most hours on record as a C4 that didn't become a C5 seems either OR or SYNTH at best. I couldn't find anything supporting that assertation. Other than that, sources and writing needs cleanup there. I'm working on that tomorrow. NoahTalk 23:12, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think I found really good proof of reliability for the other two sources. Hah, and for EPAC, I was just surprised no one added the first four storms to the assessment page. Either no one pays attention to it anymore, the it being either the assessment page or EPAC in general. Also, don't add any records for Hector that you need to understand HURDAT to figure out if the record actually happened. As you might've noticed, lately I've been focused on big picture projects, such as lists for each area, or by each intensity (as you well remember doing EPAC intensity lists!). I'm not sure if you noticed, but when you were doing the EPAC intensity lists, most of the other basins didn't have theirs. Now, the Atlantic only needs two more written and one more finished. The EPAC just needs TDs. The WPAC... needs all of them lol. But the NIO, just like EPAC! SPAC even has lists for the TDs. SWIO needs a lot more work. But it's a lot more done than a year and a half ago! Even the 2018 project. It's much more done than other seasons. 2018 has 54 articles, more than any other year but 2008. Using Wikiwork (which you seem familiar with), 2018 is the 3rd best season since 2008 (after 2015, then 2009). The Wikiwork is 176, which has to drop 68 points just to get the WW average to 2.0. Every FA helps. When I get back in the swing of editing, I'll probably FAC Mekunu in 2018, after adding more about the locust outbreak. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:23, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, I think we have made great strides in the 2018 topic. As for those records, anything needing HURDAT is SYNTH. For the new Hector article, which I had already drafted about 50% in February, I am deleting any records not explicitly mentioned. Keep in mind that this article will be formatted a little differently than normal due to the minimal impact of the storm. The section "Passage South of Hawaii and Secondary Peak" will act as a place for the met during the time as well as the preps/minimal land impact that does exist. As of now, I have a count of 59 articles with a wikiwork of 3.37 for global. Also, there will be two subarticles for Mangkhut (a decision made by KN and myself due to the wealth of info available). Minus any additional articles you may churn out, any more for WPAC than what I already have listed as needed, and new SHEM articles, that puts us at 66 articles for the year. Also, keep in mind EVERY storm would be included in this topic, similar to how battleship topics have classes of battleships listed with individual ships indented (I did ask the topics director about this). Those topics have 60-70+ articles listed. What new articles besides Titli do you think are viable in NIO? NoahTalk 02:48, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Probably just Titli for 2018 NIO. I might've missed a few articles for the total count for 2018. It sounds like you have a good plan for Hector. It'll be nice when you can point to the featured topic you made, it's a nice feeling of completion. The 66 articles needed for 2018 sounds like a lot, but we'll chip away at it one article at a time, one edit at a time. That's how Wiki works best, the long term game. Good call w Mangkhut btw. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 12:50, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The topic went up to 69 last night... One because I forgot someone had created a Kong-rey article already and two more for additional WPAC articles KN and I agreed were needed/had enough info. Depending upon how much info is out there, we could get up to 2 more articles in WPAC... as it currently stands, WPAC is at 26 articles already written/needed. We do need to take a look at what is needed in SHEM for 2018 storms as it is quite bare currently. I know what we have currently isn't all the storms that need articles. NoahTalk 13:51, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
After discussing with JR, I added in SHEM needed articles... That brought the topic to 79 articles. NoahTalk 18:07, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I rewrote the body of Hurricane Hector (2018)... I will nominate it for A-class with the note it needs a full, comprehensive review since the GA review resulted in an instant pass even though it wasn't ready at that time. I just have the lead left for the rewrite. NoahTalk 16:43, 8 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You and your A-class review :P Now, if all of weather was under one umbrella, I think we'd have enough editors to support an A-class review system. WPTC has like 10 major writers, and a bunch of editors/vandalism cleaners/link updaters. Of course, I'm trying my best to incentivize new users to do lists so they can learn about the editing process while also working on something useful. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:38, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hector and Walaka were both insta passed by unexperienced reviewers, thus why I am rewriting and going the ACR route now. NoahTalk 18:44, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah that makes sense, good idea. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 18:55, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Did you see the new format I tested out with Hector? It is a style I had thought about for storms with minimal impact that otherwise would have a tiny article. NoahTalk 19:02, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yea, there's like two too many pics, but I like that format a lot for storms with long MH's but minimal impacts. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 19:10, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well... It looks like we will have our work cut out for us. My latest tally has 79 total articles required for 2018, which should be everything (now includes SHEM). KN told me he plans to get 3-4 more done by October and then do "1 per day in December". KN is currently working on Jebi (I believe it is almost done based on the regions affected, but I am not sure). NoahTalk 19:19, 9 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Just wanted to let you know that Willa was promoted today. I put Vicente back up as well... We are currently 39 wikiwork away from a B-class average (counting everything that needs to be created)... Up to 13 wikiwork may be shed from the currently pending items. With the change in how wikiwork is being counted, it caused SHEM, WPAC, and NIO to go up for work. I'm not concerned about NIO having risen since you would be able to eliminate the entire increase and then some with just a single GA. WPAC and SHEM will definitiely take a lot of work to get done... SHEM was actually close to dropping to stub average. WPAC is at start rating currently, but should go back to C-class rating once KN's GANs are reviewed (and hopefully pass). NoahTalk 14:31, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Congrats on Willa! I wish I had more time for editing these days - today, I'm working three different jobs ._. But nice work if you can get it, especially in a recession. I should have more regular time for editing come October. I'll do what I can in the meantime, but you might've noticed I've been dabbling in some other projects, such as trying to get a unified WP:Weather off the ground, and coming up with draft lists for new users to work on. I've realized that there are a lot of excited, energetic new users who just want to try writing something, anything. Storm articles can be tricky, especially if they're recent (and don't have a lot of good historical coverage), or if they're too old. But lists seem quite doable - so much of it is just copying coding, and organizing existing articles. Here's hoping that this active 2020 season will generate new user interest and lead to some new writers, so we don't have to rely only on you and KN :P ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:02, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We just have to chip away at it... If you would be interested in doing a list, 2018 WPAC could use a timeline article. I would imagine we would include the JMA, JTWC, and PAGASA. What do you think? NoahTalk 18:40, 15 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In addition to the above... should Michael have a met article? It definitely needs a split for Florida as is considering there are 12 paragraphs in just the impact. NoahTalk 13:46, 16 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oof, I will never work on a timeline article :P Sorry, a part of me thinks they're content forks and shouldn't exist in the first place, but that's an unpopular opinion in the project, so I tend to avoid the timeline articles. I agree though, the timeline could include several agencies. Or, just as easily it could be kept to the RSMC (JMA). As for Michael, IDK if it needs a met article. Sure, it was a C5 landfall, but it also only lasted a few days while tropical. Then again, Patricia has a MH article. Agreed with a Florida split, considering the level of damage there, but if Florida and the MH were both split, then the article would barely have any content left (which might be the point - there should be more info for areas outside Florida, such as GoM oil platforms, Georgia, and impacts in the NE US/Canada. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 13:49, 17 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think Michael's met won't actually be a "traditional split"... It is looking like a more detailed explanation of a complex origin and unexpected rapid intensification. The ET part was interesting as well, but I haven't written it yet. NoahTalk 19:06, 18 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It has been created at Meteorological history of Hurricane Michael! Mangkhut's met will be next. NoahTalk 00:05, 20 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nice work! I always love seeing how the original article evolves as the sub-articles are split off and developed. Hopefully you'll have enough sources for Mangkhut - I've had some difficulty w WPAC over the years. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:15, 21 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Just wanted to let you know I intend to get Vicente, Hector, and Walaka to FA by Christmas. NoahTalk 00:50, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I almost have Walaka's rewrite finished! I have asked CB if he wants to co-nominate since he kinda is the "keeper of the Category 5 Pacific hurricanes". There's 18 wikiwork left for 2018 EPAC... NoahTalk 11:08, 9 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Right on Noah! I should have some more time for editing in October. In the meantime, I'm very glad to see how many editors/writers we have these days. It helps having a busy season, I just hope these editors stick around in the off season. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:29, 9 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If you have the time, Meteorological history of Hurricane Michael could use a review. It isn't an extremely long article by any measure. NoahTalk 22:34, 10 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Where would I find information about the outer rain bands moving ashore or radar? I will check scholary sources for Cuba met, but I doubt there would be much considering how fast the storm moved. Btw, I kinda went on a rant about how the NHC butchers ETs :P ... They decide to cut the track off when the storm truly hasn't dissipated when other weather agencies/sources in Europe have often recognized it as the same. NoahTalk 02:02, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Found a headline in a tropical cyclone update about the bands moving ashore, but I don't know where to find radar part. That whole section was only about 2.5 days btw. NoahTalk 02:27, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well... the wikiwork went back down below 4.00 for global 2018. I hope we can drop it below 3.50 by the end of the year. NoahTalk 17:46, 13 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I put Hurricane Hector up for FAC if you would be interested in taking a look at it. The article really hasn't gotten a good review yet. I know other people from the project will likely chime in, but I would feedback from an experienced member (unfortunately most aren't active at all due to covid, work, class, or a mixture). I am going to try and get outside eyes as well to make sure everything is understandable. NoahTalk 17:40, 14 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Great job getting Vicente passed! Yea I'll look at Hector some time over the next few days. I was planning on tackling this project in my free time. I gotta decide if I feel like doing the work to salvage List of Florida hurricanes (2000–present), definitely don't have time to do both. But a FAC review won't take long, probably by tomorrow night. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:15, 15 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just gopher it whenever you get a chance... no hurry on it. NoahTalk 16:28, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I will add that one note I mentioned for the disturbance and finish addressing your comments later today. I need to get some work done for a couple of my college courses first. NoahTalk 20:55, 19 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, I decided to open up a peer review on 2018 PHS since the GAN mainly had general comments. I have asked a couple people to take a look and KN said he may look as well if he gets time. Im hoping more people will chime in so the workload is reduced on everyone else. The article will be a beast for people reviewing... took me forever to write too :P NoahTalk 19:59, 20 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know how you feel about the storms in the Mediterranean, but I decided to be bold and propose a new name for the page. NoahTalk 19:39, 24 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well... peer review seems to be a bust. I don't feel comfortable nomming the season article for FAC since it hasn't been thoroughly checked. It is on our project's vital list. NoahTalk 02:50, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like the PR will just get archived on this one. I thought more people would want to take a look since it is an important article for our project. NoahTalk 23:32, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As you might've realized by now, a lot of editors don't care to do the important behind the scenes work, such as peer review, or older articles, or sources. People would rather edit war over the latest NHC advisory. I hope that after this hyperactive hurricane season, we retain a lot of the active editors, and maybe some of them will care more about work like PR and reviewing. If only Wikipedia editing was a job, I'd be doing it a lot more these days, but there's only so keystrokes I can type in a day. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:45, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Split 1

[edit]

I will try to get Leslie up to par during the next few days and then address KN's comments for 2018 PHS later in the week. I will see how much more impact there is, but idk if there will be too much to add. Will be interesting doing searches in Spanish, French, and Portuguese. NoahTalk 21:23, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What do you think about the FAC prospect for Meteorological history of Hurricane Michael? It's definitely going to be a while before I get to the main article to trim it back. NoahTalk 19:18, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Met histories seem to be pretty easy FAC's. Now that you removed the maps as sources for the ending bit near Spain, I don't think you'll have any issues. You might have some people comment on the spacing, so maybe remove the image of extratropical Michael and move up the top 10 strongest template? That cuts down on some of the extra space at the end, but it's optional. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:52, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I talked to Jason about Michael and he said there shouldn't be any division by county or subheadings in general for Florida. This wouldn't be done for any storm outside the US. He said the current Florida section is quite excessive for a main article and contains a bunch of smaller details. That being said, I think a subarticle would be in order for Florida as there are 10 para and likely room for expansion. The other sections will need to be expanded definitely. This won't be done for a while though so specifics can be worked out. NoahTalk 23:17, 14 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, a Florida sub-article is in store for Michael. Georgia *maaaaaaaybe* could use one, since damage was over $1B, but that's probably a case of being able to adequately summarize everything in 2-3 paragraphs. I'll eventually get back to 2018, I still intend to do the NIO articles, but these days (as you could tell if you've been contrib stalking, we all do that!) I'm working on Draft:Tropical cyclone effects by region. I think that's a high to top importance article. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:39, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There's no rush... I don't plan to address Michael for a while. I need to do Leslie (current), Bud, Meteorological history of Typhoon Mangkhut, Olvia, and Gordon first. That reminds me... I will be attempting to get most of the work done for an Atlantic 2018 FT with Leslie, Gordon, and the 3 Michael articles. Destroyer is doing Beryl and he may wish to go to FAC with it eventually. I believe Alberto is your article. Would you be willing to take it to the FA level in 2021? NoahTalk 22:22, 15 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If Alberto is the last article you need to get 2018 AHS to FT, sure, I'll nom it. Otherwise, I'm still fairly stretched for time these days, and there are a lot of priority projects I'd like to get done before January (Wikipedia's 20 year anni), such as TC effects by area, and the storm naming lists by letter (and merging the hundreds of DAB/SIA pages). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 13:58, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oh... I didn't mean now. I meant sometime before 2022. NoahTalk 18:18, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yea that should be doable. If all goes well, I might even get back to regular editing soon, and I can remove the "busy" label from my user page. Who knows how this crazy year will go though XD ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:12, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I agree with you that Barry doesn't look to be complete in coverage yet. As for the EPAC, I will try to get Bud fixed up in November. My focus now is trying to get Leslie to GA. NoahTalk 03:25, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yea Barry needs some love. Right on with your plans though - Leslie should be a fun one because of its unusual impacts. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:30, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
With the EPAC, if Hector passes its FAC, the wikiwork for the topic will be down to 0.93! The timeline is still at start status right now though. As you likely saw from the WPTC page, I don't intend to nominate the topic until the work is 0.00 NoahTalk 03:45, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's really impressive! Hector looks well on its way to passing. 2018 PHS stands out as one of the best collections of articles in the project, you should be really proud of that. I'm surprised you're going for 0 though! It shouldn't be that tough for Bud, considering your experience w Mexican storms. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:14, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The timeline makes up a large portion of the remaining wikiwork. I believe it is 0.36 or something like that out of the 1.07. If Hector passes soon, Walaka will be nominated. To be honest, I don't think too many people would care much about a featured topic. How long has it been since WPTC has had a nom for FT anyways? NoahTalk 21:16, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

An FT is a big deal! And you have a lot of people cheering you on w the 2018 PHS FT. This would be the first FT since... 2015? (the 1961 Atlantic hurricane season) As you know, they are big undertakings. It'll be amazing if we ever get Atlantic hurricane seasons, or retired Pacific typhoons, to FT. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:53, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have a lot of articles I want to get to GA and FA/FL in the next year... Out of the ones I already involved with: Walaka, Bud, Olivia, Leslie, Gordon, Michael's Met, 2018 PHS, and Timeline of 2018 PHS. NoahTalk 20:19, 23 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's good to have a list and a topic in mind for direction. I hope you keep that up and don't get burnt out working on them :) In my limited time I still want to get a few bigger picture projects done. By the end of the year, my goal is to get all of the storm names by letter done and publish TC effects by region done/published. I hope to help out with the 2018 topic though, if I have time. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:03, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have been doing back to back FAs since February along with GAs. I honestly got burned out on the 2018 PHS article due to its length but I forced myself to finish it. NoahTalk 01:22, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ugh season articles can be a pain, since every storm section is almost a mini article. 2018 is especially impressive because of how many storms there were. I was only able to do two WPAC season articles (02/03) because there are just too many storms to write about. So here's hoping the 2018 PTS article will be a collaborative effort. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:45, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricaneboy said he will be finishing Ava relatively soon. I released my tentative article work schedule here on the wikiwork document. NoahTalk 02:07, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oof only 22% done? I suspect that'll quickly rise once the AHS ends. I hope we find a way of keeping all of our recent active users around, even if that means we have to help guide them. Discord certainly helps, but maybe we need more of a direct plea? I've been around long enough to know that some of these users might only be around for a single season, then they'll stop editing. Quite a few of the users have been working on the lists by area, which is a great project for a new user (partly because it's a new article), so I hope we can get some of them to work on the 2018 project too. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:29, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
22% for FAs and 37% for GAs where we stand. IF KN is able to do as much as he said he was, we could clear 50% for GAs in December. NoahTalk 14:37, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We will need help, but as you said, we have two years to get this thing done by the fifth anniversary of 2018. At least for me, I will focus mainly on improving the Atlantic in 2021. I guess 2022 will bring other basins. NoahTalk 22:56, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's doable. I'm pretty close to removing the {{busy}} tag from my user page, so I think I'll be able to start editing more, now that I'm largely settled. In 2021, I should be able to get the NIO done and Yutu, plus the odd side projects I have going on. I'm hoping some other users can help with the storm names by letter, so we can get rid of the roughly 600 dab pages. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:18, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The really hard thing will be getting all these FAs. I'm not sure what your plans will be, but I plan to keep the FAC train going as long as possible. Between the NIO season article, Titli, and Gaja, there is 10 wikiwork left for a good topic. Three of the articles would have to reach FA for a featured topic. I don't know if we will be able to get up to 42 FAs/FLs in 2 years, but we can try. NoahTalk 00:27, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree the FA's will be the tough part. My Wiki plans will be determined by how RL is going. I didn't move to the move expensive city on the planet to edit Wikipedia every night, but... if I'm just sitting doing nothing, then I have projects in mind I'll do. First thing that jumped to the top of the queue is salvaging the off-season Atlantic TC's GT. Then B named storms, then TC's by area. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:46, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a plan... I just started the Walaka nom today so will see how that goes. NoahTalk 14:09, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I reviewed it. Sorry to be picky, but because it's so short, some things stood out more than they would in a more impactful storm. It shouldn't be too tough to address though. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:21, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We will have to eventually decide which articles beyond the required ones for the subtopic FTs need taken to FAC. I think we would only get up to maybe 25 with all the required articles and a fully featured EPAC. NoahTalk 22:41, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For such a big topic, I think it's best to go one by one. The Atlantic might be easier getting to FT than the WPAC for example. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:00, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not going to go "1 by 1" until my current plan is done. Not counting the current nom, I want to get 2018 PHS, Bud, Olivia, 2018 PHS Timeline, Michael's Met, Leslie, Gordon, Michael in FL, Michael, and Mangkhut's Met to FA/FL. I'm not adding anything else to this list until I axe most of it. The first four or five should be done by midyear. My plan simply involves finishing everything I have started and a couple of new articles. How do you feel about the PHS article?NoahTalk 01:23, 29 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Im likely to be pressed for time during this next week (until my paper is done). I passed Barry yesterday since my second set of comments were resolved. NoahTalk 02:42, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I saw Barry was passed, I was happy with the final result! Yea, make sure you keep taking care of real life stuff - Wikipedia is always there when you have free time. I'm getting settled into my routine, so I think I can do some more edits here and there. My queue: Florida hurricanes (2000-present) (to preserve FT), TC's by area, then 2018 NIO. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:51, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Did you happen to see the post I added about Goni? That was an insane storm. NoahTalk 02:55, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I missed it! Great writeup. I'm glad that there is interest in continuing the newsletter, that's been great this year to document the crazy active season. We'll be able to look back in 2035 what we thought about it as we have the season to break this season's records :P ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 03:07, 8 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to be fixing up Bud relatively soon as it is in pretty bad shape right now. I found a crap load of info that I will be using to rewrite the article. NoahTalk 04:52, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Great to hear! That should make the eventual FAC easier by having a nice beefy article. I'm swamped this week at work again, but I should have time over the weekend for some more substantial edits. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:36, 12 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I broke out the level 3 headers today due to the how large the article is becoming. NoahTalk 00:48, 16 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Cite error

[edit]

Hi, @Hurricanehink:. Can you please fix the citation errors at List of Category 2 Atlantic hurricanes (or at least tried to)? I've tried to redefine the references, and looked at Help:Cite errors, but it barely has any advice. Thanks, 🐔 Chicdat ChickenDatabase 13:05, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) @Chicdat: the errors happen when you give a multiple refs the same name but the text within the refs are different. This could be caused by different accessdates or formatting. For example, using {{Atlantic hurricane best track}} would give
<ref name="HURDAT">{{cite web|type=Database|publisher=United States National Hurricane Center|title=Atlantic hurricane best track (HURDAT version 2)|url=https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/hurdat/hurdat2-1851-2019-052520.txt|date=May 25, 2020}}</ref>
and putting
<ref name="HURDAT">{{cite web|type=database|publisher=United States National Hurricane Center|title=Atlantic hurricane best track (HURDAT version 2)|url=https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/data/hurdat/hurdat2-1851-2019-052520.txt|date=May 25, 2020}}</ref>
somewhere else in the article (notice the lowercase D in database?) would cause an error. I've managed to fix most of the errors but I'm not sure which ref you named "Twinkle" is the one you want to stick with, so I've left that alone for now. ~ KN2731 {talk · contribs} 15:04, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
ah... sorry about the edit conflict Hink. ~ KN2731 {talk · contribs} 15:12, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
LOL darn edit conflict! I was halfway through fixing it when KN2731 swept in (thanks btw! ^_^) I was going to say the same thing Chicdat, be sure you only label the refs with one name, and use that throughout the article. You had a few refs that you wrote out in its entirety, but because there were some changes, Wiki didn't know which one to use, so you got the error. I changed the "Twinkle" ref to the generic meta-data ref. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:43, 13 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Some drafts about Tropical Cyclones

[edit]

Hi Hink!

Thanks for the newsletter. Here are some drafts I have, uh, a problem with.

The first one is Draft:Tropical Depression One-E (2020). It's kind of a dead draft - not well written and with only one edit. Not notable. I tried to delete it, but the deletion was rejected.

The next one is Draft:Tropical Storm Octave (2019). See Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Draft:Tropical Storm Octave (2019) for the deletion discussion.

Thanks! Destroyeraa (talk) 19:56, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Hurricanehink: I think you might have misunderstood me. I did not create those drafts, other users such as User:Elijahandskip, Ilovebrennanthebeast and User:Everything11111 (who created the last one) created them. I am asking you whether or not the drafts can become future articles. Destroyeraa 23:19, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Also, see Draft:Tropical Storm Dolly (2020). Does SS Dolly merit an article? Destroyeraa 23:19, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have created the article List of Category 1 Atlantic hurricanes. Destroyeraa 02:30, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Hink! Have you heard of Tropical Storm Fay (2020)? It looks like the first Tropical storm to hit NJ since Sandy. Will probably warrant an article soon. Since I didn't experience Sandy, I'm pretty hyped to actually experience a storm (that won't kil anyone or cause too much damage). Stay safe! Destroyeraa 21:18, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Destroyeraa: - Draft:Tropical Storm Fay (2020) - good idea! Yea, it's pretty exciting every time you experience a storm. Most are pretty no worse than a nor'easter, but occasionally they are something fierce. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:58, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Hurricanehink! I hope you are doing well. I've created two drafts– Draft:Tropical Storm Gonzalo (2020) and Draft:Tropical Storm Hanna (2020). Do you like to help me with them, if you have time? Also, thanks for moving Hurricane Gonzalo to Hurricane Gonzalo (2014). Stay safe. ~ Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 23:17, 23 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Good call on Hanna Destroyeraa. Looks like Gonzalo might not end up underperforming, but it'll probably still end up article worthy given the expected island impacts. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:31, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. No one thought Hanna would become a hurricane until yesterday. I knew it was going to have at least some impact (like Tropical Storm Cristobal (2020) so I created the draft two days in advance. Gonzalo looks like its gonna die out pretty soon, so I think most of the damage on the islands will be minimal. The draft's still there, but I may delete it soon. ~ Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 18:10, 25 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't delete the Gonzalo sandbox. There were still preparations, and the storm still moved through the southern Lesser Antilles, a relatively rare occurrence. Given Trinidad and Tobago's population, I wouldn't be surprised if there is some decent damage there, unfortunately. Maybe you should reach out to Wikipedia:WikiProject Trinidad and Tobago or some of the other islands? They might be able to add info from a local perspective, which could add enough content to sustain Gonzalo's article. As for Hanna, the article is about to get a lot of attention, including some SPAM. You and anyone else watching Hanna's article should be on the lookout for potentially misleading information, which is bad if people turn to Wikipedia during a disaster. 20:16, 25 July 2020 (UTC)
Based on consensus, I figured that an article on Gonzalo wasn't necessary. Fortunately for the people on Trinidad and Tobago, damage was limited - the main damage was some downed trees. I've been watching Hanna's article for the past several days - there hasn't been much SPAM or wrong information, and the article is a pretty decent C-class article.
As for the newly formed storm, Isaias, it looks like it will need an article very soon, since it is about to make landfall in the Dominican Republic. Looking at the NHC's forecast cone, there is some chance that the storm will have impacts to New Jersey and the east coast. Still a few days out, but worth watching. Stay safe. ~ Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 15:11, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And it's already a hurricane! Isaias ramped up quickly, yet another notable I storm. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:58, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah. Looks like Isaias is just gonna dump a lot of rain in NJ, perhaps even more than Fay. Wind impacts can't be worse than a nor'Easter. Anywhere from 4 to 8 inches is on the table. There's an overall lack of information on Isaias' impacts, since most of the news articles are in Spanish. This is why Isaias' article is being rejected at WP:ITN. ~ Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 16:25, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also it doesn't seem like too bad of a storm. I hope it's a nothingburger for everyone along its path. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:32, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Flash flooding and street flooding are still problematic, especially along the coast. Luckily the storm will be inland for a while by then, so surge wouldn't be a big problem. ~ Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 17:31, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Destroyeraa (talk · contribs), any chance you might be able to help improve List of New Jersey hurricanes? It's been a featured list for a long time, so newer storms might not be formatted right, or have citations. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:04, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I'll get to work on it as soon as Isaias' impacts have calmed down. That storm absolutely wrecked my town. Downed wires and trees absolutely everywhere. Lost power, though I thankfully have it back. It was worse that expected for many New Jerseyans, especially along the coast, where 70+mph wind gusts were reported. Absolutly hell for a hour in the eyewall. I am grateful that I made it out safe, and I hope you did too. ~ Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 00:25, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The general reaction is that the storm was stronger than a lot of people expected. More than 1 million New Jerseyans lost power. Isaias seems to be a modern equivalent to Tropical Storm Doria in 1971 - similarly fast path, and similarly strong winds across such a large part of the country. Of course, the US is wealthier and more populated now, so Isaias would have more impacts/damage than a storm from 1971. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:04, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, do you think I should re-nominate Isaias article at WP:ITN? It was rejected once when it was downgraded, but after it killed 13+ people and caused billions (estimate) of $ of damage, I think it needs a spot on ITN. ~ Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 18:59, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps. The 2.8 million people without power is certainly notable, I think more so than the death toll and the (preliminary/unofficial) damage total. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 20:44, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Hink. Did you lose power? Also, if you have the time, do you mind putting your opinion on the WP:ITN/Candidates page for Isaias. Seeing the tragic damage and death from Isaias, I truly believe that it needs a place on WP:ITN. Thanks. ~ Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 22:19, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Destroyeraa: Where do you think we should draw the line as to what to post on WP:ITN from the hurricane project? Do you think that every hurricane that impacts land should go up? Should every hurricane that causes a death go up? Jason Rees (talk) 23:01, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jason Rees: No, of course I don't think every hurricane or TC with land impacts should go up. Take Bertha for example, no one in their right mind would nominate it, bc it caused so little damage and only affected SC. IMO, not every hurricane needs to cause 40 deaths to be significant and notable enough for ITN. Isaias affected a swath of areas from PR to Canada, causing 13+ deaths and an estimated billions of dollars in damage. ~ Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 12:16, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Destroyeraa: Most TC's that impact land affect a wide swath of area. For example in the WPAC, we look at systems forming in Micronesia impacting the Phillippines or Taiwan and then potentially going on to impact a combination of China, Hong Kong, Macau, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and Myanmar before emerging in the Indian Ocean or a combination of China, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, Japan, Russia, and Alaska. Jason Rees (talk) 22:36, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jason Rees: Let's move this discussion to the WPTC's talk page. It's not the right thing to keep discussing it on Hurricanehink's talk page. ~ Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 01:01, 7 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't lose power Destroyeraa (talk · contribs). It's understandable to be excited about a storm coming nearby, but it was only a tropical storm (just happened to be a strong tropical storm over a large area, which hasn't happened for quite some time). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:22, 5 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hurricanehink, thanks for your opinion on ITN. I'm glad to hear that you didn't lose power, because I did and it was nasty. Nearly my whole town lost power. ~ Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 12:10, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yea, it was bad, but just imagine how much it would've been if it was a major hurricane. That's the kind of major storm that belongs on ITN. Isaias, while a decently bad storm, wasn't like Cyclones Amphan or Harold earlier this year, which were truly epic/borderline legendary storms. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:32, 6 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. The newest update to Isaias' page says that it caused a whopping $4.2 billion in damage, with $4 billion in the US alone. If we had known this before, it probably would have supported its case for ITN. ~ Destroyeraa (talk|Contribs) 15:26, 11 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2020 July newsletter

[edit]

The third round of the 2020 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it into the fourth round each had at least 353 points (compared to 68 in 2019). It was a highly competitive round, and a number of contestants were eliminated who would have moved on in earlier years. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with one featured article, 28 good articles and 17 DYKs, amassing 1836 points
  • Botswana The Rambling Man , with 1672 points gained from four featured articles and seventeen good articles, plus reviews of a large number of FACs and GAs
  • England Gog the Mild, a first time contestant, with 1540 points, a tally built largely on 4 featured articles and related bonus points.

Between them, contestants managed 14 featured articles, 9 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 152 good articles, 136 DYK entries, 55 ITN entries, 65 featured article candidate reviews and 221 good article reviews. Additionally, Denmark MPJ-DK added 3 items to featured topics and 44 to good topics. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 710 good article reviews, in comparison to 387 good articles submitted for review and promoted. These large numbers are probably linked to a GAN backlog drive in April and May, and the changed patterns of editing during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. August 16, 3pm: Great American Wiknic

You are invited to join the Wikimedia NYC community for our annual summer Great American Wiknic, this year being held virtually.

We look forward to seeing local Wikimedians, but would also like to invite folks from the greater New York metropolitan area (and beyond!) who might not typically be able to join us in person!

Featuring artist-Wikimedian Sara Clugage's "Picnics: An Outside History" for a cultural exploration of picnicking, knowledge and society during the national panel in the first part. We encourage you to call in for the second part from a local park or natural site and share it on the video stream, as well as sharing your favorite picnic grub or other special foods with us.

Is there a project you'd like to share? A question you'd like answered? A Wiki* skill you'd like to learn? Let us know by adding it to the agenda. The Wiknic is taking the place of "WikiWednesday" this month, so we will also include salon and knowledge-sharing workshop aspects.

Suggested "List of Pacific typhoon..." articles

[edit]

Hello there, Hink. Yea, sorry if I have not made progress for the List of China typhoons(?) article yet. University work has greatly increased for me and I kind of prioritised on improving some storm articles to GA. However I do noticed that there hasn't been an articles/lists made regarding List of Pacific typhoons by intensity? I thought that maybe I should start with that first, if that is fine. I may work my way downwards from the highest intensity, so "Super-typhoons". Typhoon2013 (talk) 23:21, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there Typhoon2013. No worries if projects don’t end up happening. I love the idea of the intensity lists. Have you thought about how you’d format it? Would you just use JMA data? Or JMA and JTWC? All of the lists currently use RSMC data. Now, you could do Super typhoons first, but JTWC and PAGASA use that, not JMA. JMA uses “violent typhoon”, but that isn’t publicly used, nor is it common. Any thoughts? Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 01:29, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As per the usual with the table haha. I could help with the making up of the table or listing down the storms. And yeah regarding the intensities, it is a bit hard to decide which one to do because the JMA has a different classification. Somebody brought forward the idea of having all classifications from both the JMA and JTWC? I mean the JMA is the RSMC, however people or the media prefer to use the JTWC classification like Typhoon or STY, as much as I am aware of. No clue here but perhaps @Jason Rees: could help us out for this? Typhoon2013 (talk) 01:36, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Crazy idea, but you could just include every typhoon in List of typhoons? That can be by century if it gets too long. There are 1,485 typhoons. Just getting them all is a huge undertaking, but will be more useful than having separate ones for Super/Violent typhoons. Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 22:12, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Typhoon2013:, I am surprised that you are at University as I thought you were a lot younger still. Anyway, I have only just seen this conversation, after Hink mentioned it to me offline via FB. I think that while it would be nice to go and split them all up into Severe, Violent, Super Typhoon etc, however, I think it would be easier to combine them all into List of typhoons. We can then add in a section called Other systems and talk about systems that the JTWC, CMA and HKO consider to be typhoons rather than the JMA.Jason Rees (talk) 22:53, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As for List of super typhoons, in May, Hurricaneboy23 abandoned a sandbox that is a well-sourced hunk of super typhoons up until 1960. Anyone care to finish it? 🐔 Chicdat Bawk to me! 11:02, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Chicdat: We think it would be easier just to merge the content of that sandbox into an overall list of Typhoons, after all STY isnt an official category and is used by PAGASA, CMA, HKO as well as the JTWC but not JMA.Jason Rees (talk) 11:42, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. (Just split it by decade... you might just end up getting the longest article on the site!) 🐔 Chicdat Bawk to me! 11:44, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Even splitting by decade would remove any sortable function, such as the costliest, or deadliest typhoon. Also, if you're going to look for typhoons by year, you would likely to go individual season articles. Also, it probably wouldn't be one of the longest articles, because most of the article would be just coding, unlike typical lists. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 13:45, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As @Chicdat and Janm 7: already know, I have made a start on the list here by copying in data from the season effects charts from the 2010 - 2020 Pacific Typhoon Seasons. Anyone is welcome to give me a hand with knocking the list into shape.Jason Rees (talk) 14:29, 27 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

HH Newsletter

[edit]

Hello, hope all is well. I was looking at the Hurricane Herald newsletter, and I had a question about it. I am wondering is what the rules are for helping create the next edition of newsletter, and who is allowed to help make the articles? Stuff like that is what I am curious about. Weatherman27 (talk) 04:34, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker)WP:WPTC/NEWS/42 comes out on September 1, and, though usually the primary author is Hurricanehink, anyone can edit it. Each edition there is one member of the month and two opinion pieces, which anyone can work on... including you! Hope this helps, 🐔 Chicdat Bawk to me! 10:08, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Weatherman27: There's still an opinion piece left! The WikiProject would love to get a perspective of a new(ish) user and how they feel about the project! 🐔 Chicdat Bawk to me! 10:11, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there Weatherman27 (and Chicdat!). Just like articles, anyone can edit the newsletter. Sections that need to be written include summaries of every storm since the last newsletter, opinion pieces, project news, and anything else worth mentioning to the other tropical cyclone editors. I usually end up doing because I wanna make sure editors stay updated, but anyone can write it up, and in fact I’d appreciate any help putting it together (from you two or any other talk page stalkers 😜). Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 12:31, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lol thanks @Chicdat: and @Hurricanehink: , I will check it out and maybe try writing out the opinion piece as well as see if I can help with listing storms off since the last article, but I will be busy so I will try my best to get as much done as I can. Again thank you both for the responses, they were really helpful. Weatherman27 (talk) 22:49, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also, quick question, where should i go to help edit the article? Weatherman27 (talk) 21:27, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Newsletter/Archive 42? :) Hurricanehink mobile (talk) 22:09, 26 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, thanks. Weatherman27 (talk) 01:27, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am really sorry, but @Hurricanehink: could you help me get started on making the opinion piece, I am feeling a bit lost... Weatherman27 (talk) 01:38, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Weatherman27: I can help you. First, if you don't know where to write your opinion piece, you can either write it in the Opinion Piece box, or in your sandbox (if it takes a long time to write). Next, think of something that you like about WPTC, or something that you don't like about WPTC. Or, you can write about your experience on Wikipedia, especially about your experience (not expertise) - the things that made you edit, the things that drove you to improve hurricane articles. You should probably jot your ideas down somewhere. Next, transform your ideas into a short opinion article - doesn't need to be fancy, like an essay - just a short lead paragraph, bullet points, and a short closing paragraph should do. What do you want to write about? Anyway, let's move this to your talk page. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 02:25, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Hurricane Herald, Hurricanes in ..., and other things

[edit]

Hey Hink! I know your busy, and don't have much time to edit. I have some things I need to talk and ask you for.

First, the Hurricane Herald is not ready because everyone is busy. The second Opinion piece we can cut if we need, but there needs to be a member of the month. Many members of WPTC have done exceptional work during the past few months, and there are plenty of candidates for the award.

Second, I have created a draft - User:Destroyeraa/Hurricanes in the Iberian Peninsula - similar to yours, I like hurricanes, Sixty Minute Limit's, and others to expand the scope of list articles about tropical cyclones. I am thinking about changing it to Hurricanes in Europe, because there seems to be only ten storms that have affected the Iberian peninsula.

Third, a thing that has bugged me is moving the drafts I make into the mainspace. Usually, I have to deal with the redirects, like the redirect for Hurricane Laura, before moving. I usually use CSD, but as I learned from Isaias article, it sometimes takes a day or two for the redirect to be deleted. I spoke to Jasper about it, and he said I need to have either admin or page move rights. Seems I need around 500 more edits to get the latter. Seems like I have to stick to CSD for a while.

Fourth, the article I created - Hurricane Dolores, doesn't seem to be edited by any other user after being moved to the mainspace. A bit disappointed.

Stay safe. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 01:40, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey there! We still have a few days for the Hurricane Herald. As for the draft, check out Tropical cyclone effects in Europe. Third, yea, when you're moving a page and have to deal with the redirects, it's best to ask an admin for now until you get move rights. As for Dolores, I see Weatherman27 edited the article. Not every article is going to get edited a lot, and if you did a good job writing it, then there might not be a lot for other users to add. So no need to be disappointed :) You should be proud of your edits (as we all should, this is one of the most productive projects on Wikipedia). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 12:32, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Destroyeraa: Hink & I have someone in mind for the member of the month, but we won't reveal who it is just yet.Jason Rees (talk) 13:23, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hurricanehink, thank you for your kind words. Now I know that my draft for TCs in Europe isn't necessary. Hmm... Maybe I should do a list about "List of Atlantic hurricanes in Central America" or "List of Pacific hurricanes in Central America". I'm also glad that @Weatherman27: has editing Dolores' article!
@Jason Rees: Good! ~ Destroyeraa🌀 13:49, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think any list of hurricanes in Central America would have to include both basins. And there would be a lot, regardless of the country, so it might be better to split by country? Panama might be the easiest, since it's the farthest south. I only know of one landfall there (Hurricane Martha), and only a few other storms even affected the country. Costa Rica might be another easy one, only a few known landfalls, not too much in the way of impacts (save for the occasional rare storm like Otto or Mitch). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:02, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Glad to see that Dolores' article finally has people (other than me) editing it. I hope to bring it to GA-class soon, but I've been busy with studying and other stuff, don't have much time expanding the MH and Impacts while adding sources - it's hard to add sources on an Ipad or phone (both I've been editing with recently)! I'm currently working on Draft:Meteorological history of Hurricane Laura - though I haven't made much progress. The "Hurricanes in Central America" draft is going into the ideas bin until I have more time to edit. Going to be much more ier in the upcoming weeks. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 00:57, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I always like when an article I publish gets attention from other people, even when it's people fixing my mistakes - it means someone read what I wrote and wanted to make it better! There's nothing like that collaborative spirit. As for the other projects, don't forget, there's no deadline, and we're all volunteers :) Stick to projects that you're excited to do. I'm working on the Tropical cyclones in YYYY as in, I'm finishing Draft:Tropical cyclones in 2002, but I'm also helping Jason Rees a bit with List of Pacific typhoons. But I think that Janm 7 can finish an article in a week, two weeks if he wants it to be better quality. I'm glad he's here. 🐔 Chicdat Bawk to me! 10:29, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad to see so much editor activity coinciding with such a busy hurricane season, and I hope you all stick around in the off-season. ^_^ <3 ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:17, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hink, I just found out that several editors created an article for Tropical Storm Gonzalo (2020) out of a redirect I made. Do you think Gonzalo’s impacts merit an article? Personally, I don’t know, but the current article is poorly written and needs to be moved to draft space. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 15:44, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't personally think that Gonzalo needs an article, but I haven't read much about its impacts. Those borderline storms that affect the Lesser Antilles might have impacts on multiple islands, and if researched properly, then maybe there could be enough for an article (Tropical Storm Kirk (2018) is a great example). For now, it looks like Gonzo's section in the season article is well-developed, so there would have to be a decent amount of info that isn't already there to sustain its own article, IMO. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:17, 1 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You mistakenly said on ChessEric's talk page that he was the "Storm of the Month". LOL! I fixed it btw. It happens when you work overtime 4 jobs a day. Also, I redirected Gonzo's page to the section in the season article. Kirk was different, it actually caused monetary damage and 2 deaths. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 01:08, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
LOL yup, thanks for catching that XD Good call with redirecting Gonzalo, I don't think anyone will miss it too much, not when there are still so many storms left in the season. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:43, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Destroyeraa:...not so sure how to feel about this. LOL! Jk. Thanks for the support!ChessEric (talk) 22:00, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, ChessEric. LOL! Good work. If you have time, are you going to create an article for Nana? I'm busy this week, won't have much time except lunch and evenings. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 22:33, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Destroyeraa: I was going to wait to see if it strengthened since shear was affecting it, but there was a center reformation this afternoon so an article is appearing more likely. Making tropical cyclone article really isn't my forte, but I can get one going if need be.ChessEric (talk) 23:48, 2 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ChessEric: Per latest NHC advisory and recon, Nana has deepened, as a center reformation did occur. Gonna create draft-Draft:Tropical Storm Nana (2020). ~ Destroyeraa🌀 00:11, 3 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Destroyeraa: Indeed. Oddly enough, recon data may put this thing at close to or even at hurricane status despite the somewhat exposed center.ChessEric (talk) 01:21, 3 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ChessEric: Let's move this to either mine or your talk page before Hink gets mad that we're taking up his talk page for things unrelated to him. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 01:35, 3 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@ChessEric:, and Hink: This is what I love about tropical cyclones, or meteorology in general - always expect the unexpected. Nana was a dying TC with a partially exposed LLC Wednesday afternoon, 6 hours later, it became a hurricane! Same with Isaias - it went from a 60 m-h TS into an 80 mph hurricane in 1 hour. I’d expect to see more of these kind of storms. It’s 2020, right?! LOL! ~ Destroyeraa🌀 13:23, 3 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Destroyeraa: It is interesting, although somewhat concerning, to see this and even more hurricanes are doing that lately. (i.e. Hurricane Matthew, Hurricane Barry (2019), Hurricane Isaias) By the way, I finished writing up the Draft:Meteorological history of Hurricane Laura article and will be uploading it shortly.ChessEric (talk) 18:55, 4 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Hink! I really appreciate your thorough review and constructive criticism. I already fixed half the things that I point out. I got really confused for a second, that both Destroyeraa (talk · contribs) and I like hurricanes (talk · contribs) responded to the same thread about the same general matter. Now I see that the above user was just translating Destroyeraa's Spanish. The beauty of the internet is that you can use Google Translate for Spanish sources. Basic searches like "Huracan XXXX" will show up plenty of information in Spanish-speaking countries. Key words to add are "lluvia" (rain) "muertes" (deaths) and "danos" (damages), and "deslave" (landslide). Also, Mexico uses "pesos", which translates to weights, so if you see something like 1,000 weights, it's actually a damage figure. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:19, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hink, so for the Rainfall map by the Mexican Hurricane Center, how do I license it? It isn't a work of the US government, and I don't know the licensing laws in Mexico. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 01:22, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't mean use it as an image, I mean use it for the info it contains, that is, the rainfall totals related to Dolores. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:32, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Is interpreting it OR?~ Destroyeraa🌀 01:37, 12 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2020 September newsletter

[edit]

The fourth round of the competition has finished, with 865 points being required to qualify for the final round, nearly twice as many points as last year. It was a hotly competitive round with two contestants with 598 and 605 points being eliminated, and all but two of the contestants who reached the final round having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were

  • Free Hong Kong Bloom6132, with 1478 points gained mainly from 5 featured lists, 12 DYKs and 63 in the news items;
  • IndonesiaHaEr48 with 1318 points gained mainly from 2 featured articles, 5 good articles and 8 DYKs;
  • England Lee Vilenski with 1201 points mainly gained from 2 featured articles and 10 good articles.

Between them, contestants achieved 14 featured articles, 14 featured lists, 2 featured pictures, 87 good articles, 90 DYK entries, 75 ITN entries, 95 featured article candidate reviews and 81 good article reviews. Congratulations to all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.

Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! TCs by Year

[edit]

Im going to work on adding sources to TCs by year to substantiate the damage and death data in it. We will need more sources for other things later on (namely retirements). NoahTalk 18:47, 1 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, Im going to hold off on this for the time being... I realized this isn't going to be able to get FL or even be close to accurate without performing detailed research on EACH storm's impacts so EVERY year has an accurate total. I also think more discussion needs to take place on splits and structure as lists should have some kind of prose. NoahTalk 22:36, 3 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

1925–1941 Pacific hurricane season split

[edit]

Hi, Hurricanehink! Welcome back after a busy week! As of now, i'm really considering to split 1920s Pacific hurricane seasons, 1930s Pacific hurricane seasons, and the part of 1940–48 Pacific hurricane seasons into 16 new articles of Pacific hurricane seasons (1941, 1940, 1938, 1937, 1936, 1935, 1934, 1933, 1932, 1931, 1930, 1929, 1928, 1927, 1926, 1925). I'm doing this as a part of a WPTC initiative that just recently extended into January 15th, 2021 (Wikipedia 20th anniversary). I'm putting this quote when i'm considering these splits: Might need to create additional season articles for the early 1900s. I know that there is an earlier attempt in 2011 when WPTC is just new, but the problem is the potential articles is going to rely on a single source, and it's still going to be. However, Jason Rees's articles like 1940s North Indian Ocean cyclone seasons and demand of earlier NIO decade article drafts (which would use India Weather Review as the only source) is probably going to throw this to the window. As such, including these factors lead me into here to ask this question - would you approve these splits this time around? WPTC of 2020 is certainly different from WPTC of 2011. SMB99thx my edits 05:37, 2 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the barnstar and for all of the work you've been doing lately! It seems like everyday, I see you working in a different basin, or doing some of the top level article. As for splitting the seasons, I'm all in favor of doing the Pacific typhoon seasons back to 1900. I just wonder, if the split happens now, then we have 16 more stub articles. That's not the end of the world, since all of those seasons could surely be expanded, using multiple sources. The issue with articles relying on a single source is when there is only that single source. Most storms since 1900 have plenty of newspaper and other coverage. Eventually, we'll be able to cross-reference all of the season articles with all of the articles by location, so we can be sure we got every storm, with the best possible information. That'll take some time, for sure. Still, as you note, the WPTC of 2020 is better than that of 2011. I think ultimately it is better having 16 additional stub season articles. At least we can add the infoboxes and track maps for all of the storms (assuming someone can take the data from IBTRACS). I'm glad you've been proactive with the recent surge of WPAC articles. Sure, a lot of them were written by a sockpuppet, but I'm glad you saw the value in those articles. The articles might not be the best, but as long as they're verifiable and correct, they provide some value. Given how many good and featured articles we have, I think it's easy for us to forget the small value that we provide in being comprehensive. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:45, 4 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh wow, nine years after I proposed the idea, Hink finally thinks EPAC seasons articles pre-HURDAT are somewhat viable. YE Pacific Hurricane 03:25, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest, I would've nominated SMB99thx for MotM too. They are such a tireless contributor and kind user, who appreciates others' contributions while being humble about their own. It was SMB99thx who gave me my first (three) barnstars, along with giving barnstars to countless other WPTC contributors and Wikipedians. After this issue, it might be time to nominate you or Jason Rees for MotM, since you and Jason do much of the backbone work for WPTC. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 01:54, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for changing the gender - as a LGBTQIA Wikipedian, I respect the preferred pronouns, and it was looking at SMB99thx's user page that caused you to edit conflict me :P BTW, I have no interest in ever being MOTM. I've been around long enough and gotten enough thanks (and featured articles). I'm more interested these days in cultivating new writing and editing talent. There'd be no backbone for the project without the hundreds of writers over the years working on all of these articles. I don't think Jason has ever been MoTM, we'll just have to see who steps up most over the next month! (or two if we end up publishing the next newsletter in December) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:30, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
SMB99thx identifies as male, but I forgot that they use them/they pronouns. Also, sorry for the edit conflict :P. Happy 15th anniversary! ~ Destroyeraa🌀 12:39, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Anyway, I'm receiving some backlash on Commons for uploading copyright material for Cyclone Ianos. I found the copyrighted material on a website that attributes it to the Greek Government and the Greek Prime Minister's office. Turns out the website was lying - it was made by a photographer working for the PM who never gave permission for commercial use. It's sad how half my contribs get deleted :( ~ Destroyeraa🌀 13:29, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, you gotta look out for those images. I wouldn't say half your contribs get deleted, since that would number in the thousands, and you only have 120 deleted contributions according to Special:DeletedContributions/Destroyeraa. This is all part of the learning process. There are so many rules on Wikipedia - you can't down if you break one or two of them. Just take pride in the good work you do, like speaking with other users so much. I've found over the years (and maybe you have too) that increased editor dialogue helps make for a more productive project. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:10, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For half my contribs, I mean the ones on Commons, not WP. Btw, you don’t really go to WP:ITNC that much. So what brought you to comment on Gamma? ~ Destroyeraa🌀 22:00, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Talk:2020_Atlantic_hurricane_season#Nominated_for_ITN. I'll comment on ITN for current storms because I've seen a lot of them over the years, and know that not every storm with an article should be on the main page. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:20, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes true, but I am still a big mad at how Isaias wasn't posted. A billion dollar storm that claimed nearly 20 lives. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 23:39, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yea I remember. Keep in mind though, $4 billion isn't that unusual for a US landfalling hurricane. Look at Sally, which caused $7B in damage, and wasn't on ITN (AFIAK). Since the US is the wealthiest country in the world, it makes sense to have higher standards for US landfalls when it comes to ITN. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 23:45, 5 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Isaias caused >$5 billion in damage, while Sally caused too less deaths (8 probably isn't enough, Isaias caused 18). Also, for Gamma, we have posted storms with less than 6 deaths, such as Cyclone Ianos, which caused 5. Ianos was posted mainly because of the aftermath, with some of the biggest cities flooded and heavy losses. It was also a very unusual storm all over European news - Greece doesn't usually get hurricane-force storms; Mexico gets several a year. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 01:10, 6 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just saw the message the inappropriate editor left on your talk page. LOL. I don't know why someone would do that... ~ Destroyeraa🌀 15:32, 7 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Scarred for the rest of your life?! Damn, it's just vandalism haha. Wikipedia has the entirety of human knowledge, including some of the worst atrocities on record. Hink and Destroyeraa, may I ask, are you free to help me expand Draft:Effects of Hurricane Ivan in Alabama? I really haven't worked on the preparations or impact (yet!), and unlike Hurricanes in Hispaniola, I don't plan on working on it mostly alone. I like hurricanes (talk) 18:17, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't say "free" to help, as I'm still rather busy in RL. I can provide some links if you need though. I'm assuming you got the TCR, but here is the report from the National Weather Service. Here is info from FEMA. You'll probably find lots of retrospectives for Ivan in 2014 and 2019 (10 and 15 year anniversaries), so search ["hurricane ivan" Alabama 15 years] or something like that. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 22:36, 10 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if this is the best time to ask this, but I have been looking through list articles and have repeatedly seen thing like. I don't really know what it means, like is this a book or something? I like hurricanes (talk) 18:10, 11 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@I like hurricanes: (and to anyone else who stalks my user page), I'm always happy to answer any questions on my user page, so it's a fine time/place to ask. I believe you are right that reference is a book. When you see that, take a look if a book is also cited below the references. This is the old school way of citing, when you might want to cite many different pages of a single book. The new school (of course) is most resources being online. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:05, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to bringing up this old discussion, but after becoming MotM earlier this month, I don't want to become a MotM again. I'm clearly stepping up this month, but I want other people to be given MotM instead.
About MotM of this edition, I'll say that I would like it to be both Destroyeraa and Robloxsupersuperhappyface.
Reason why Robloxsupersuperhappyface and Destroyeraa should be Co-Members of the Month (Edition) is because of their brilliant ideas when they created articles Hurricane Sally and Cyclone Ianos respectively, and also for their activity at proposals. As for MoTM, we try not to repeat users, since there are so many people who contribute to the project. As for the list, completely agreed, I'll posted on the BVI page. I'm glad these list articles are taking off! ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 14:19, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I don't know that. SMB99thx my edits 00:17, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with making Robloxsupersuperhappyface the MotM. He hasn't been MotM before, and has contributed greatly to current event storms, such as Typhoon Molave (2020) and Tropical Storm Zeta (2020). ~ Destroyeraa🌀 01:56, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The July–August 2020 class is shaping up to become the most awesome class we have seen on WPTC with me, ChessEric, Roblox becoming MotM. I also see I like hurricanes, CodingCyclone, and some others might have a shot at making this. SMB99thx my edits 12:29, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, the recent crop of editors has been quite impressive! I just hope y'all stick around after the busy season ends. There's a lot of work to be done :) ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 16:20, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I can promise I will still be editing after the season ends, and I have only edited the 2020 Atlantic hurricane season around 20 to 40 times. If I could, I would also nominate RSSHF for MotM, he is helping a lot with hurricane articles and the season article itself. Anyways, I need to start doing something that's not sneaking through people's edit histories. I like hurricanes 00:02, 27 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks both! We'll discuss MoTM at the end of November, since we'll get back on the schedule of a newsletter every two months. I don't think there's enough project activity for a monthly newsletter. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 13:47, 28 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Since we are reaching the end of November, I decided to start discussion about the MoTM right here.
I suggest that the MoTM of this edition should be two, not one. For the month of October, Robloxsupersuperhappyface is far and away is the MoTM, because of what I have said above. For the month of November, it should be Destroyeraa. As such, I don't want Robloxsupersuperhappyface to be Member of the Month (edition, which covers both months October and November), because from what I have seen so far, Super is not pretty visible in his contributions. Instead, I'm arguing that Destroyeraa has taken up things Super should have been taking on in this November, and Destroyeraa appears to taking more and more responsibility in recent days. SMB99thx my edits 06:47, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Gonna have to agree with SMB99thx here. Also, if you didn't know already, RSSHF is taking a wikibreak until the season becomes more active again, instead of maybe just doing the tips I put on his talk page. Cyclone Toby contribs 13:40, 22 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Barry

[edit]

When I get done reviewing Barry, would you be willing to give it a second review? Im asking Destroyer to search for more details as the article hasn't been changed much since July 2019. NoahTalk 00:46, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sure Hurricane Noah (talk · contribs), could you ping me when you're finished with the review? I don't think I've looked at Barry's article since I helped write it. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:13, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It will be a while for sure since more info needs added. There should be some aftermath for a 600M storm. Although I think the impact may need to be fleshed out a bit more. My review thus far has been rather substantial in size and will likely take some time to address. I know Destroyer is wanting to get some FAs eventually so I have been more strict than usual. NoahTalk 02:24, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good idea to be a bit picky/strict. There might be a temptation to let stuff go because it's "only" GA, but thorough reviews are how good writers become great. And one of the key points is whether an article is comprehensive enough. That takes a keen eye to determine. As you noted, aftermath might be expected, but then again, it was only a C1, so there's not always a lot of aftermath, especially if the impacts were rather widespread. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 02:48, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I Just have the impact left to review... pending whatever needs to be added. Im quite sure there is more since people haven't really updated it since July 2019. NoahTalk 02:55, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hink, @Hurricane Noah:, after looking at two sources, it's clear that an aftermath section is needed. For example, Trump declared a disaster declaration, Alex Azar declared a public health emergency, and oil companies lost oil. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 16:03, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Good job finding that info! Keep in mind you may want to check if there is more impact (especially outside the main areas) and/or preps. You may be surprised at what you come across. NoahTalk 16:45, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What is your opinion on Talk:Hurricane Leslie (2018)? See section on split. NoahTalk 15:54, 12 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hink, thanks for the second review on Barry. I'll try to find some more impacts for Mississippi, since that seems like the shortest section so far. However, when I search "Hurricane Barry (state name)", most of the search results are of Hurricane Laura or Sally. ~ Destroyeraa🌀 15:29, 19 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Hurricanehink, I am sorry about what happened, first I am new to Wikipedia I really don't have an idea on how to work this, and second, no the information I got are from Documents and etc mainly from Calvert and St Mary's County, in Maryland. As you seem like you know what your doing, am I able to forward the Documents and information about the hurricanes that were left out to you to overcite and edit the pages properly, I also have a buddy that works for NHC (National Hurricane Center) which I am able to get information and documents that are currently not public. Anyways if we can work something out some time, and prove the information, that would be great, (and the Wind speed and storm surge data were all estimates made by the NOAA, from private sources who have gone over the hurricanes)!

WikiCup 2020 November newsletter

[edit]

The 2020 WikiCup has come to an end, with the final round going down to the wire. Our new Champion is England Lee Vilenski (submissions), the runner-up last year, who was closely followed by England Gog the Mild (submissions). In the final round, Lee achieved 4 FAs and 30 GAs, mostly on cue sport topics, while Gog achieved 3 FAs and 15 GAs, mostly on important battles and wars, which earned him a high number of bonus points. Botswana The Rambling Man (submissions) was in third place with 4 FAs and 8 GAs on football topics, with New York (state) Epicgenius (submissions) close behind with 19 GAs and 16 DYK's, his interest being the buildings of New York.

The other finalists were Gondor Hog Farm (submissions), Indonesia HaEr48 (submissions), Somerset Harrias (submissions) and Free Hong Kong Bloom6132 (submissions). The final round was very productive, and besides 15 FAs, contestants achieved 75 FAC reviews, 88 GAs and 108 GAN reviews. Altogether, Wikipedia has benefited greatly from the activities of WikiCup competitors all through the contest. Well done everyone!

All those who reached the final will receive awards and the following special awards will be made, based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, these prizes are awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round, or in the event of a tie, to the overall leader in this field.

Next year's competition will begin on 1 January. You are invited to sign up to participate; the WikiCup is open to all Wikipedians, both novices and experienced editors, and we hope to see you all in the 2021 competition. Until then, it only remains to once again congratulate our worthy winners, and thank all participants for their involvement! Suggested "List of Pacific typhoon..." articles pt.2

[edit]

Hello again and yes this is the continuation of our previously discussed topic. I have began the list for severe tropical storms in one of my sandboxes here. Thoughts? I have started with this because it is easier and I know we have the problem of either using the JMA categories (Strong, Very Strong, Violent) and/or the JTWC categories (cat 1, 2 etc). I am somewhat personally leaning towards of having both categories. Pinging other users like @Jason Rees: and @Chicdat: as they were involved in the previous discussion. Typhoon2013 (talk) 05:15, 17 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

REALLY? Since you started that article (!) I'm giving out a draft for (JMA) WPAC TS (you can freely edit it) and moved Hurricaneboy23's draft as a mainspace article as List of super typhoons. SMB99thx my edits 04:46, 18 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I'm also in favor of creating multiple articles rather than a single article for WPAC typhoons. There is too much WPAC typhoons, and it's unfair that WPAC TYs should be condensed into one article. SMB99thx my edits 05:43, 18 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So Typhoon2013 and @SMB99thx: - I'm not sure if there should be an article on "List of Super typhoons". Keep in mind that PAGASA uses that term too. We have a few options. I agree that there are probably too many WPACtyphoons for one article. So, I think the right solution is using the JMA categories (strong, very strong, and violent). The question then is whether to include JMA estimates alongside just JTWC, or include PAGASA as well? This is partly why the WPAC lists haven't been done yet. I'm glad there's a severe tropical storms list though, that's pretty non-controversial. I'm still honestly not sure about all the typhoons though. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:52, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This includes the Tropical Storms lists too because the JMA and JTWC can classify a TS separately (like 2019's Toraji and 02W). Well what I discussed with SMB was to include both the JMA and the JTWC categories. 1) JMA is the RSMC therefore we go for that which is the obvious three TY "sub" categories but 2) they are not really often used in the media nor not many are aware of those categories hence why I thought to also split up to each Categories 1, 2, 3 etc, and plus people are more aware of the JTWC TY categories than the JMAs. I personally thought that we should not include PAGASA lists of X category because it is rather unofficial and not all WPac storms get a PH name, and not all storms that are PAGASA-tracked make landfall. Moreover it is kind of pointless having a PAGASA lists because most storms there would have a very similar category than the JMA (+STY by the JTWC) so why can't the readers check either the JMA or JTWC lists. These are my thoughts though. Typhoon2013 (talk) 05:48, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To add as well. I thought of that adding a "Landfall" section like the 'List of Category X hurricanes' for the JTWC lists ones. As I said that despite the JMA being RSMC, not many people will know the Strong, VS and Violent categories, and if people are curious where a specific storm made landfall they can see which category it is and it will be more easier for them since they are more familiar with that scale. Typhoon2013 (talk) 06:10, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Keep in mind, PAGASA is just as official as JTWC. PAGASA covers the Philippines with its 109 million people. JTWC is only official (by virtue of being the US-based agency in a US territory) in Guam and the Northern Marianas Islands, which is like 200,000 people. There are a lot more Filipinos reading the English Wikipedia (by virtue of English being an official language there) than Guam/NMI. I'd still rather defer to JMA because it's the RSMC, while also including wind estimates (not pressure) from JTWC and PAGASA. For the ones that don't enter the PAGASA AOR, it would be grayed out. As for the JTWC categories, they don't usually use "Category 1/2/3/4", so I don't think those should be individual lists. I still think using the JMA strong/VS/violent is the best bet, even if they aren't widely used. As most (all?) super typhoons would also be violent typhoons, we could have a symbol to indicate storms the JTWC classified as a super typhoon. All of these lists can be linked from the parent article "Typhoon". ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 17:03, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You are right, we do use the English one more, saying as a Filipino myself too. How about the Tropical storms, though? How can that be dealt with? I thought of having it in one article but should we put both the JMA and the JTWC ones in one table too or keep them in separate tables? Typhoon2013 (talk) 03:04, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am now slightly moving towards in favour of your idea, Hink. If that is the case, should we also add in a "Landfall" section, and perhaps use the JTWC categories there like used in the other hurricanes lists? Typhoon2013 (talk) 03:08, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Arthur

[edit]

I've GAN'ed Arthur. Surprisingly, there is a lack of NCDC data for NC from May 16 to 19, 2020. I found some news stories about a guy being electrocuted in Florida and a patio collapsing, and another from the Press of Atlantic City about PTC Arthur interacting with an upper level low, which caused windy conditions in South Jersey. @Hurricane Noah: - I removed nearly 5 kb from the article and trimmed it down to a short three paragraphs. I also removed the loop of the eye moving ashore, which you have in the Met article (and I put in the FL hurricanes list 2000-present). ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 01:22, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot for that. I will work on splitting off Florida and expanding the other areas in the summer when I am not as busy. FINALS COMING UGH... NoahTalk 01:27, 20 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, focus on passing the finals :P Wikipedia will always be here when you're done and you have the downtime. @HurricaneTracker495: Did the school block Wikipedia editing on the chromebook? ~ Destroyeraa🌀 16:24, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No but they likely will. --HurricaneTracker495 (talk) 16:46, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Cyclone Ava

[edit]

Would you be willing to do the GAN for Cyclone Ava and help Hurricaneboy23 with improving the impact? It isn't quite there yet and some mentoring is needed. It is nice to see some of our newer editors trying to jump into the GA process. NoahTalk 01:16, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just wanted to make sure you saw this. I will be working on Bud tonight. NoahTalk 22:09, 24 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You should see how Hurricane Bud (2018) has expanded. I still have a bit more to add to the impact section. I will need to rewrite the met and lead too of course. NoahTalk 15:26, 27 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yea! That looks much more complete now. The preps section could probably be split off, since there are two paragraphs. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 15:39, 27 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Still have about 9 more sources to go for impact. I will rewrite the other portions tonight or tomorrow. NoahTalk 15:46, 27 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Bud will be around 50-60k bytes when done most likely. I have a fourth paragraph of met to do before I get to rewrite the lead. I'm probably going to ask for a good article reassessment since it has been rewritten entirely and massively expanded. NoahTalk 23:17, 27 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Or you could just go for ACR or straight to FAC. A GA reassessment could take some time, and if you believe the article has only been improved/still meets the GA criteria, then you're just adding an extra step. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:03, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

An ACR/Peer review may be the right move as I would feel blind if I were just going into FAC without any kind of review. Would you have any time to take a look tomorrow or Sunday? I still need to rewrite the lead. I will summarize the impact details and add to the 2018 PHS article as well. NoahTalk 00:09, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure on when I'll be able to, but hmu when you finish the article. Consider it a pre-FAC review. ♫ Hurricanehink (talk) 00:33, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I finished it up. I hope the lead summarizes the impact well enough. I didn't want to include too many minor things and only listed the ones I thought were most important. NoahTalk 01:57, 28 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
