Magical alphabet[s]

You moved Magical alphabets to Magical alphabet per WP:SINGULAR. May I direct you in turn to WP:PLURAL#Exceptions? — "There are two main types of exceptions to this rule: • Articles on groups or classes of specific things. Some examples: ... • Articles that actually distinguish among multiple distinct instances of related items can be sensibly given a plural title when the alternative would be to create an inappropriately large number of short articles, one on each instance. The various Zeno's paradoxes, for instance, are incorporated into one article, with a correspondingly plural name."

This article is not about a magical alphabet, but about "multiple distinct instances" of magical alphabets. Please reconsider. – .Raven  .talk 12:11, 10 July 2023 (UTC)

I'm not convinced that the topic here is a "class" or that it "distinguish[es] among multiple distinct instances of related items", but rather that it is a general concept like Artificial script consisting of several unrelated things. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 16:56, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
Mm. Alphabet of the Magi, Celestial Alphabet, Malachim, and Transitus Fluvii (Passing the River) have Hebrew as their "parent system", which makes them "related". Also, the last three of those, plus a greater number besides them, were created by Agrippa, another interrelation. And of course the "Magical" prefix, indicating their use by the community of occultists, makes them topically related. There is no single "the magical alphabet", so the changed title could easily mislead. That the center of the article is a list of magical alphabets, which (if that were all to it) would make the title "List of magical alphabets", also weighs toward the plural. – .Raven  .talk 22:37, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
@.Raven: Please start an RM to discuss this issue further. I am still fully confident that WP:PLURAL does not apply, as there are other alphabets with different sources, such as the runes which were originally used for writing Old Norse. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 00:17, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
Runes, as you'll see in the infobox, include as "parent systems" Greek, Phoenician, and Proto-Sinaitic. Cf. Hebrew alphabet, which likewise includes Phoenician and Proto-Sinaitic among its parent systems. Related again!
But if you insist, then I will start an RM. – .Raven  .talk 01:33, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
@.Raven: But not all descendants of the Phoenician alphabet are considered to be "magical". –LaundryPizza03 (d) 01:43, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
That's why the article isn't listing "all descendants of the Phoenician alphabet", just alphabets which are considered to be "magical", their topical relationship — as I mentioned above. Some alphabets are too familiar to have any secrecy in transcription, or the aura of mystique that more rarely seen alphabets provide. Being hard for outsiders (the "uninitiated") to read or understand is a plus for occultists' manuscripts... a relic from the days of heretic-hunts and witch-hunts. If the alphabet has spent most of its existence dedicated to a magical purpose, even better. The divination process Tacitus recorded — and the verses in Hávamál, notably Rúnatal (Odin's finding of the runes) and Ljóðatal (whose charms Osborn and Longland tie to specific runes) — give a strong sense of such a long continued association with what we call magic. Newer alphabets published or written by, and for use by, occultists, likewise have spent their existence dedicated to that purpose.
That's stressing the (plural) subjects' history, which their separate articles can better cover. If we focus on the reader, and what he sees going through article lists, which title will give a more accurate mental picture of the topic discussed there? Magical alphabet looks like it covers just one such alphabet; Magical alphabets promises plurality. Which would you find more interesting if your pursuits included magic? – .Raven  .talk 07:06, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
In my opinion, it is very unlikely that an RM will work. The concept here is singular (a magical alphabet) and then there are examples; this is like horses. Arabic numerals are completely different: the concept “an Arabic numeral” doesn’t exist in isolation. 100.36.106.199 (talk) 10:20, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
As per the example quoted up top, each of the various Zeno's paradoxes does exist in isolation quite nicely, but we group them anyway, because they share (a) being paradoxes, and (b) by Zeno. (There are also thematic resemblances.) Each of the magical alphabets exists in isolation quite nicely, but we group them in that article because they share (a) being alphabets and (b) being "magical" in use and association. (To which their histories contribute.) Should the example's article be renamed Zeno's paradox, because the individual paradoxes are examples of a theme? – .Raven  .talk 13:43, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
Zeno's paradox is a completely different situation where it is an article about several things, each of which individually could be the subject of an article called "Zeno's paradox". Each of the magical alphabets has its own name (Alphabet of the Magi, Celestial Alphabet, Malachim etc.); none of them could individually be the subject of an article called "Magical alphabet". A simple test: you cannot write "A Zeno's paradox is ...", and you can write "Zeno's paradox is ..." but only if you pick a single one of them to write about. By comparison, it is easy to complete the sentence "A magical alphabet is ..." . 100.36.106.199 (talk) 14:05, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
> you cannot write "A Zeno's paradox is ..." – because you cannot write "a Zeno"
when referring to the individual of that name; but you can write "A paradox by Zeno is...", and quite feasibly continue "... on the difficulty of calculations involving infinitesimals." Then list examples. – .Raven  .talk 14:54, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
you can write "A paradox by Zeno is...", and quite feasibly continue "... on the difficulty of calculations involving infinitesimals." I don't think this is true. (It is my inference that our host does not appreciate this discussion continuing here, so this will be my last comment in this discussion; apologies LaundryPizza.) 100.36.106.199 (talk) 22:54, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
If that phrasing displeases you, please feel free to substitute any generalization of which you approve. I'm not in any way bound to the specifics, just trying to demonstrate what "you can write" about the singular term... even though, per WP:PLURAL, we use the plural term. – .Raven  .talk 23:49, 11 July 2023 (UTC)
For failure to do so, I have opened an RM at the article's talk page. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 15:49, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

User:Deshawn Jackson

Since the UAA report has already been archived, I hope you don't mind that I respond to your post here. DeSean Jackson is a American professional football player. User:Deshawn Jackson is spelt different but pronounced the same. I left out a space between the first and last names; so, I apologize for the confusion. Anyway, I just thought that might be a violation of WP:REALNAME. Hello, LaundryPizza03,

You closed this CFD discussion as "Rename and Merge" but instead Category:15th-century Bohemian lawyers was emptied and the new category was never created. Can you look into why this instruction wasn't carried out as you requested? Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 01:17, 11 October 2023 (UTC)

@Liz: According to the page history [1] [2], the user Smasongarrison (talk · contribs) did all the processing about half an hour before you deleted the category. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 03:51, 12 October 2023 (UTC)
My understanding was that both were to be merged into the renamed Lawyers from Bohemia, so there wasn't a new category to create. Mason (talk) 04:22, 12 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello, LaundryPizza03,

You tagged this template for deletion but it linked to a CFD discussion, not a TFD discussion. I'm not sure this deletion has been discussed among the folks at TFD. I see deletion is mentioned at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Proposals/2023/September but a WikiProject doesn't have the right to order a page deletion. Could you bring this up at TFD? Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 21:26, 13 October 2023 (UTC)

According to the WP:CFD rules, stub types are nominated for deletion at CfD. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 21:27, 13 October 2023 (UTC)

Category deletion

Hi, LaundryPizza03, how are you? I see that you've tagged several categories for deletion as sock creations – for which thank you! – but that no-one seems to want to delete them. That could be because they are not empty (it is in my case, anyway, reluctant to leave a mess of redlinks). Would you care to empty them, perhaps by just reverting edits such as this? I've tried to do so with Kill-it-with-fire, but with only partial success. I'm afraid the rest may need to be done manually ... Regards, Justlettersandnumbers (talk) 10:30, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

About your self-reverted relist

Hey LaundryPizza03, I noticed you trying to relist that massive RfD. I'd hold off on that, as the discussion has already been open for a month, and there's been ample argument. I'm actually in the process of writing up a closing note for it. TechnoSquirrel69 (sigh) 14:40, 14 November 2023 (UTC)

Deaths by country

We have many articles directly in deaths by country. Algeria might lead right now with 12. However, what if the article is specifically on a death, not a bio? Can such an article be placed directly in a death category based on where it occured?John Pack Lambert (talk) 15:47, 15 November 2023 (UTC)

Challenging your close

Hello LaundryPizza03. I noticed you closed Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 November 9#Category:Politicians' deaths due to animal attacks. I think such action is controversial because you are the nominator in the directly connected Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 November 13#Category:Politicians' deaths from disease. Editors participating in the first one are also participating in the second one with same or similar arguments, like "trivial intersection". I even requested for said motive of duplication that you merged your nomination discussion with Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 November 11#Category:Politicians killed in duels but I did not even receive any answer from you. All of these discussions are under the parent Category:Politicians by cause of death and have many of the same participants making the same or similar arguments. See WP:OVERLAP, WP:SEETALK. I think ideally the same uninvolved editor should close all of these discussions after analyzing the threads. Therefore, per WP:CLOSECHALLENGE, I challenge your close. Recent removal of my lawn post

hi, you recently removed one of my posts and I wanted to get more specifics about why since your message was vague. I have to create posts for an assignment in one of my classes and I was using an article that we had read to create my post. I can share the details of my assignment if that would help you understand why I posted what I did.

if you do not agree that my post should be up could you at least point me in the direction of where I can see what I had written... i spent a lot of time adding my citations to my work and would like to see where all that work went

thank you PrestotheUnicorn (talk) 03:10, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

@PrestotheUnicorn: You could rewrite existing sections of the article, which in the case of Lawn are currently poorly referenced. Recall that you are writing an encyclopedia, not a collection of essays. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 03:58, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
but how can i view the work i did and all the citations i added PrestotheUnicorn (talk) 04:20, 19 November 2023 (UTC)
@PrestotheUnicorn: You can load the page history by clicking "View history" at the top of the article; this button appears at the bottom on mobile view, being represented by a clock. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 05:47, 19 November 2023 (UTC)

Jurists

Hi, all your speedy renames need to be reversed. You are using the word "jurist" incorrectly, at least from a British and Commonwealth perspective. A jurist is usually an academic. DuncanHill (talk) 19:24, 21 November 2023 (UTC)

@DuncanHill: Please appeal to CfD full discussion. This would entail all of the subcategories of Category:Jurists that are not specialized by occupation. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 04:30, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

One more thought on music categories

In theory as you diffuse categories to small sub-sets, like Dutch blues mandolinists, the last I checked there was 1 article on a Dutch mandolinist, and it was in this sub-cat, so in theory this sub-cat avoids having the article in 3 cats that would be larges, blues musicians, duch musicians and mandolinists. So the theory is by allowing this 1 article sub-cat where at least 1 parent cat has no direct articles and just 1 sub-cat we cut down on Category clutter on the individual article level. The reality is some of the most overcategorized articles we have, only exceeded by long serving British politicians and well traveling monarchs who were awarded an honorary award in each country they visited, and Musicians. Alliwing these hyper small categories does not solve issues, but I think allows people to use their imagination in classifying by every instrument and creating 1 song geners.John Pack Lambert (talk) 07:37, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

Madonna and Jennifer López are both literally in over 70 categories. One reason for this, although it only adds maybe 4 categories is that we for some reason Categorize musicians by record label.John Pack Lambert (talk) 07:45, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Lopez' husband Ben Affleck is in the slightly more reasonable number of categories, 57. Even that is partly driven by classifying him as "from" several different places, and then as a male actor, director and maybe some other rings from each. A few other cats, like American poker player, strike me as being non-defining in his case.John Pack Lambert (talk) 07:48, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Winston Churchill is in 108 categories. If that is not a record we have a problem.John Pack Lambert (talk) 07:53, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

The Amazing World of Gumball FfD

Hi LaundryPizza03. Could you please specify what you're asking for at FfD? In other words, if you think an image should be removed, then please state the it by name. Otherwise, these FfDs are going to get closed as not-actionable. Thanks, FASTILY 21:44, 22 November 2023 (UTC)

@Fastily: Can you be more specific? I thought it was clear that we should have only one image. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 22:04, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
Sure, so for example, in Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2023 November 15#The Amazing World of Gumball (season 2), can you state which image should be kept, and which one should be deleted? Is it File:The Amazing World of Gumball, Vol. 3.jpg or File:The Amazing World of Gumball, Vol. 4.jpg? I'm asking you take a side and express an opinion :) -FASTILY 23:08, 22 November 2023 (UTC)
@Fastily: In all the FfDs except season 2, the images are very similar in composition, so I don't care which one is kept. Why not offer an opinion yourself? –LaundryPizza03 (d) 00:34, 23 November 2023 (UTC)
Then why don't you say that at FfD? I'm one of 3 admins who close discussions at FfD, so I don't usually participate. I could of course, also close your nominations as not actionable, but I doubt that's the outcome you want :) -FASTILY 04:15, 23 November 2023 (UTC)

Category:Films about fratricide and sororicide

It looks like this category has become a mixture of two types of article:

  1. ) Films where a person kills their legal (/biological) sibling
  2. ) Films where people are killed in a Fraternity or (more likely) a Sorority.

The second group, which *looks* like it contains a majority of the article should probably be renamed to something involving Fraternities or Sororities. and doesn't seem appropriate for the rename. Ideas?Naraht (talk) 14:31, 4 December 2023 (UTC)

There is no reason to remove this entry.—2605:59C8:22F4:8910:580E:38B5:ABC0:1EDB (talk) 19:18, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

Category:Guayana Esequiba

I saw that Category:Guayana Esequiba was to be deleted and helped replace the category's listed articles with more appropriate categories. Anything else that might need to be done? WMrapids (talk) 13:52, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

Wow, you're quick. Thanks!--WMrapids (talk) 13:56, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Y word

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Y word requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, such as at Articles for deletion. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. * Pppery * it has begun... 03:08, 27 April 2024 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 May 26

Hi! There are a bunch of stub discussions now at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 May 26 which you started. Your response to the question at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 May 26#Template:Bhutan-tv-stub (and any discussions which you feel have particular considerations) would be very much appreciated :)

Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 May 15#Category:Deaths from food poisoning

Hi again. I don't know if you got my ping at Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2024 May 15#Category:Deaths from food poisoning, but I would also appreciate your input there. Thanks!! HouseBlaster (talk · he/him) 13:54, 28 May 2024 (UTC)

Please stop your category revisions on Fiveling

I know you mean well, but you are putting in categories that are pretty irrelevant. The dominant relevance is in nanotechnology, and various aspects of chemistry and physics such as nucleation. Adding "five" as a category is not relevant, and these nanoparticles are of marginal mineralogical relevance. The article has seen expert review, and you hopefully recognize that major players have contributed, see for instance the talk page. If you really want to argue that your version is correct I suggest asking at WT:PHYSICS rather than creating an edit war. Ldm1954 (talk) 12:01, 1 June 2024 (UTC)

@Ldm1954: Again, categories need to be as specific as possible. Can you possibly come up with more specific categories yourself? –LaundryPizza03 (d) 16:13, 1 June 2024 (UTC)
Please stop. Being very specific, while fivelings can be nanoparticles, they are also formed at larger sizes by electrochemical means, as already detailed in the article. The latter is materials science, as are other aspects such as disclinations. Please stop trying to put big concepts described in many thousands of articles into little boxes that don't fit. Ldm1954 (talk) 09:07, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
I didn't do anything new. I just removed two categories that are already covered by more specific ones. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 14:44, 10 June 2024 (UTC)
They are not. Please do the research, WP:COMPETENCE. Ldm1954 (talk) 17:30, 10 June 2024 (UTC)

Deleting Ninety-Nines

Can you explain why you suggested the Category Ninety-Nines for deletion? As a new wikipedia editor, who is trying to improve the content for women's categories, I do not see why my contribution to building this new category was deleted on your suggestion? Nayyn (talk) 18:30, 11 June 2024 (UTC)

Template:Campaignbox Anglo-Spanish wars

I have readded the link to "Anglo-Spanish War (disambiguation)". Contrary to what you think, this does not create a circular link on the disambiguation page. In fact it is a trick used to fool the maintenance bots to think that the template does not link to a disambiguation page, while it is doing that. But without the redirect, the maintenance bots will start shouting that is is an incorrect link that needs to be fixed. So please, do not remove it again. The Banner talk 15:33, 25 June 2024 (UTC)

@The Banner: Actually, it does create a circular link, and that is the problem. Is there a way to have it unlinked only on that page? –LaundryPizza03 (d) 17:57, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
Can you explain to me where it creates a circular link on the disambiguation page?
I know that it creates a text like "Anglo-Spanish War >>> (Redirected from Anglo-Spanish War (disambiguation))" but that is not a circular link. It is just a link that shows how you got on that page. The Banner talk 18:20, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
In the transclusion of the template! Do you not know what a circular link is? –LaundryPizza03 (d) 18:22, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
I think you misunderstand the issue. Templates with disambiguation links is a useful page to look at. The redirect prevents the template to show up there. But when you like to fix the problem in ten different articles... The Banner talk 18:42, 25 June 2024 (UTC)
It creates a circular link on Anglo-Spanish War. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 22:45, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
So you do not understand the issue. The Banner talk 23:25, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
No, YOU do not understand the issue: This template links to a redirect to Anglo-Spanish War, which becomes a circular link on Anglo-Spanish War itself. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 23:49, 27 June 2024 (UTC)
Solved now? The Banner talk 00:04, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
Yes, thank you. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 03:14, 28 June 2024 (UTC)
Thanks, you really did not understand that the issue was not the redirect. The Banner talk 09:06, 28 June 2024 (UTC)

Hello, LaundryPizza03,

I think you should use the CFD bot or CFD speedy renames to handle this one rather than the speedy deletion process. Admins who patrol CSD categories will not know how to handle this unusual request. Liz Read! Talk! 01:17, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

How do I use CfD bot? –LaundryPizza03 (d) 04:02, 2 July 2024 (UTC)

Fun in a Chinese Laundry

Hi Pizza - Can you tell me why the 1988 paperback image of the book cover was removed? To my knowledge, it's a distinct publication from the original hard cover image. Lord Such&Such (talk) 16:37, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

WP:NFCC#3a. Two non-free covers of different editions is generally deemed excessive. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 18:09, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

That seems to be reasonable. Thank you for the clarification.--Lord Such&Such (talk) 19:00, 5 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi, Laundry I want to know how to write an article on Wikipedia. Thank you. 41.251.223.61 (talk) 18:31, 10 July 2024 (UTC)

As a new user, you will need to create in the Draft: namespace (e.g. Draft:Example). You can use Help:Your first article as a guide. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 18:42, 10 July 2024 (UTC)

Speedy deletion declined: 2028 Republican National Convention

Hello LaundryPizza03. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of 2028 Republican National Convention, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Not previously been deleted via a deletion discussion. Thank you. Firefangledfeathers (talk / contribs) 19:12, 19 July 2024 (UTC)

WikiProject Palaeontology articles

Please see Wikipedia:WikiProject Palaeontology/Articles by quality statistics. You seem to have renamed ONLY the NA-Class categories (see column now redlinked in that table). Please either reverse that set, or rename the others and revise the project template accordingly. – Fayenatic London 22:10, 18 August 2024 (UTC)

They have all been tagged for speedy rename. Let me know if any are left over after that page and the WikiProject banner are updated. –LaundryPizza03 (d) 18:40, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

Masses of isotopes

Hello, I thought to ask you since I've seen you editing the isotopes of elements pages and probably know your way around the NUBASE evaluations better than me. I rewrote a good portion of Terbium and got kind of stumped when trying to update the section on isotopes from NUBASE 2016 to 2020, since a new heaviest isotope was identified. I am not familiar with how the tables give rise to atomic mass. How is it determined, and was it right to note both the lightest and heaviest isotopes as having no given exact mass? Reconrabbit 23:19, 26 August 2024 (UTC)

@Reconrabbit: Use AME2020 II. This has a dedicated reference template and can be found at https://www-nds.iaea.org/amdc/ame2020/nubase_4.mas20.txt.
