Hi there; given that this article unarguably qualified for deletion, your programme labelled it as {{db-nonsense}} when quite obviously it should have been {{db-attack}}. It still gets deleted, of course, but does your program need tweaking?--Anthony.bradbury 00:07, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Attack

Hi. Template for attack is {{db-attack}}. Other templates are in WP:SPEEDY. Is that what you meant?--Anthony.bradbury 00:22, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

ref desk bot

Science desk - edits to topics still shown on the main page are not listed in the history but at Wikipedia:Reference desk/Archives/Science/2006 November 16 - surely this is not right? - I suspect refdeskbot, am I right?87.102.21.223 00:29, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply - very quick. The problem is that I used to check the edit history of the ref desk to find if anyone had added anything of interest to me. Obviously the page is too big to search through bit by bit - also doing a compare versions eg http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia%3AReference_desk%2FScience&diff=88531253&oldid=88521691 doesn't show the changes to questions over 2 days old. Obviously I could just check the archives.. Suggest that since the discussion is still on the main page (and therefore probably active) it shouldn't be archived. Could you move it back 2 days? This seems to be the offending piece of code

{{Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Science/2006 November 15}} {{Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Science/2006 November 16}}

I hope I have explained what my problem is..

You could as Werdnabot does and only archive days if there has been no change for <NOCHANGE> days, for some appropriate value of <NOCHANGE> (say 1), but not before the day itself is old enough to be archived under the present regime. That would have the effect of keeping discussions unincluded on the main page as long as they are active.  --LambiamTalk 01:22, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
A while ago the archiving style on the Reference Desk (long before RefDeskBot) turned from straight archiving of old posts/days to separating each day right off the bat and then dealing with transcluded pages. I didn't like it much at first; I got annoyed when I got kicked off of the main page into the archives, but now I can see the benefit of it. There should be no need to load the entire current desk (the largest page on RD) when you are currently only browsing a days worth of questions. I coded the header so that it would allow you to jump back on to the current desk, and I don't see why you can't just look at the history page for the day that you're concerned about. It might not be as convenient for you, but I don't think many users browse their edits in that manner. I for one use my list of contributions to check for responses, if I don't just browse the entire page manually.  freshofftheufoΓΛĿЌ  18:08, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
Just for the record, I agree with the new system, because of potential problems with such a big page as an unarchived RD, and so I would like the bot to stay as it is (:)). Martinp23 18:15, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

You may want to look into the accounts Naradasupreme (talk · contribs), Drmagic (talk · contribs), and Oldschoolfreak (talk · contribs) as they are suspected sock puppet accounts of that particular IP. :: Colin Keigher (Talk) 20:04, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Downtown (song)

Hi

Thanks for your attempt to sort the article of (Re: Downtown (song). Earlier today I requested that another admin look into something - given the fact your now involved with the article, it may seem better to ask you.

I informed Journalist of the situation with SFTVLGUY2 and asked him if he could look into that user and another called ConoscoTutto. I believe they may be an alias of each other; their profiles and writing styles are remarkabley similar. And they have posted in the same articles before expressing the same opinions (see Downtown talk page, Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 November 13 - Petula Clark films). Is having aliases against Wiki regulations? And is there any way you can check IP addresses to establish if there is a connection please? Rimmers 21:46, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Hey Martin!

Please note my comments here [1]. I will maintain vigilance at Baylor University, as I feel that controversies with citations should not be blanked just because someone does not like them to be made public. We had similar issues at The Path to 9/11 a few months back. Just thought I would say hey and let you know a little of my perspective. I am not about taking sides on any of the issues, so much as I am opposed to the blanking of information by those who want to keep "controversy" off wikipedia. The interactive nature of our project allows for such development in a collaborative fashion. Finally, I appreciate your work in the community. Best, Kukini 22:02, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks much. Hey...teach me something...why is it that warning removals can't lead to blocks? I have only been an admin for 4ish months, and have noted blocks on editors who did this before. Always learning, Kukini 22:18, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Congrats!!!

I have been kinda focused on just doing administration lately (as you have today). I should get back to RfA land now and again to see our incoming admins such as yourself. Welcome to the mop-club!!!! Kukini 22:29, 18 November 2006 (UTC)

Sockpuppetry?

Thanks for protecting Somalia. After some discussion on the talkpage, I strongly suspect there is some sockpuppetry going on. You can see my thinly veiled accusation, here. Please advise if you think Checkuser is called for. I wouldn't request one casually, but a quick review of the (very brief) contrib histories of these 2 editors looks suspicious to say the least. Thanks again. --Doc Tropics Message in a bottle 03:42, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

Response here Martinp23 23:06, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
It's all confusing. I originally blocked Molag Bal indefinitely a few weeks ago (vandalism and such). Then Professor Sunderland comes out of nowhere, and then starts editing the same pages as Molag Bal. I established a connection, and told him I could block him, but I said I would give him a second chance. Then Sunderland goes crazy, makes two new accounts, Galactian and SpaceBot (which I shut off, as it malfunctioned and blanked 10+ pages). Galactian also edited Sunderland articles. I didn't know what the hell was going on, and I still don't. Anyway, RFCU is the best option here. I was considering that myself. I'm suspecting that the user has many more accounts. hi what's the point of that page when editors that keep on editing don't want to come to the discussion page and tell their reasons of editing?

i was blocked because i wasn't aware of the 3x time rev rule on wiki and that's ok but the Editor sweetie1986 that also goes under multiple IP names on the somali people page continues to edit without visiting the discussions page

Block

Hi there. Just to say no hard feelings about the block you imposed on me - it was my own fault for getting dragged into an edit war. I will step back from the article entirely, I may even remove it from my watchlist. However I did want to make you aware of the fact that Mitsos has recently made personal attacks on me (see here) and on others and breached numerous other Wikipedia guidelines without suffering any sanction whatsoever. Although on this particular instance I accept myself and Spylab were as much to blame as him for edit warring, nonetheless this user is determined to use WP to push a neo-nazi agenda and needs to be treated with caution. --SandyDancer 10:58, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

Bot seems to have croaked

Perhaps it got disconnected. Take a look at the contributions. It seems to have suddenly stopped archiving after it finished the Computing and Mathematics desk. It removed November 18th from the Humanities desk, but never archived it, and it didn't get to any of the other desks, nor the help desk.  freshofftheufoΓΛĿЌ  12:24, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

I manually finished archiving the Humanities desk for November 18th (I created the transclusion page and indexed it), so be careful not to archive Humanities twice when you get the bot back!  freshofftheufoΓΛĿЌ  12:46, 20 November 2006 (UTC)

You're a sysop!

Hi, MDP23/Archive4, Congratulations on Becoming a Sysop!

Hey there. I'm pleased to let you know that, consensus being reached, you are now an administrator! You've volunteered to do housekeeping duties that normal users sadly cannot participate in. Sysops can't do a lot of stuff: They can't delete pages just like that (except patent nonsense like "aojt9085yu8;3ou"), and they can't protect pages in an edit war they are involved in. But they can delete random junk, ban anonymous vandals, delete pages listed on articles for deletion (provided there's a consensus) for more than one week, protect pages when asked to, and keep the few protected pages that exist on Wikipedia up to date.

Almost anything you can do can be undone, but please take a look at The Administrators' how-to guide and the Administrators' reading list before you get started (although you should have read that during your candidacy ;). Take a look before experimenting with your powers. Also, please add Administrators' noticeboard to your watchlist, as there are always discussions/requests for admins there. If you have any questions drop me a message at My talk page. Have fun! =Nichalp «Talk»=

Album covers tagged by sockpuppet vandal

Please be more careful when deleting images tagged with {{no source}}. A number of album cover images were tagged "no source" by a sockpuppet vandal User:Aujin66, but for the most part the source of an album cover is obviously the album from which it came. My advocacy request

Ideally I would like User: Mitsos blocked and the Hrisi Avgi article semi-protected, so new and anonymous users can't edit it. I know there is are very specific (and sometimes confusing) policies for dealing with these kinds of problems on Wikipedia, so I will accept any good faith decisions based on non-biased application of these rules.

However, I do not consider inaction to be an acceptable outcome. If the Hrisi Avgi article becomes unprotected and user: Mitsos is not restrained from editing it, he will continue to revert it to inferior versions. And if the article remains protected as is, the article will continue to be in a state that is not as good as it could be. Any help or advice will be much appreciated.

I was drawn to the article mentioned above because of that editor's factually incorrect edits to other articles, the blatant bias he has displayed in those articles, and the personally abusive and racist language he has used in talk pages. Here's a summary of some of his offenses:

  • deleting ‎information in articles that doesn't fit with his obvious political agenda.
  • adding unverified opinions and factually incorrect claims to articles, in order to promote his obvious political agenda.
  • deleting other people's comments on talk pages that make him look bad, or that don't fit with his political agenda.
  • repeatedly deleting a Neutrality Disputed tag on the article mentioned above, even though I have clearly explained why I dispute the neutrality of some of the sources in that article. Now I even question the reliablity of some of the information from neutral sources like Greek newspapers, because they are written in Greek, and have been translated and filtered by users like him.
  • repeatedly reverted mundane, yet necessary improvements to the article in question — such as the correct verb tenses, appropriate categorization of similar topics under one section, and the unwikifying of a name with no Wikipedia article.
  • Making widescale reverts without clearly justifying them, and then denying the extent of those large reverts.
  • expressing racist views on talk pages, such as proclaiming that whites are superior than other people, and using the word nigger to describe black people.
  • personally insulting other editors on talk pages, including using profanities.

That's just what I can think of off the top of my head. I realize that all Wikipedia editors make mistakes, and not all of my own edits have been correct, but I believe it is clear that the negative results of allowing user:Mitsos to alter content on Wikipedia outweigh any positive results. His editing pattern has been a detriment to the factual accuracy, grammar and clear readability of Wikipedia articles. His behaviour on talk pages has been a detriment to civil interactions within the Wikipedia community. Spylab 14:40, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

  • I looked at WP:ANI and couldn't figure out which category to post my concerns in. My concerns may not fit in one specific category, because the problems include 1)Persistent POV-pushing 2)Vandalism (removing legitimate tags and other people's comments on talk pages: as well as destructive edits to grammar and formatting) and 3)Personal and racial attacks on talk pages 4)3RR.

There doesn't seem to be any point in leaving all the warnings on the user's talk page, because he has been warned other times about his behaviour and nothing has improved. He would likely delete those official warnings from his talk page anyway, since he has a habit of censoring comments that put him in a bad light (despite hypocritically posting a banner on his talk page declaring it a "Free Speech Zone." I think I even posted an official complaint about this user before, only to have it ignored because his offences did not meet the specific requirements for banning. If a user like him cannot be banned, then I really wonder what a user has to do to have any sanction against him. It seems pretty cut and dry that he should not be here, or should have his editing privileged drastically reduced. Spylab 15:41, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for the advice. I mistakenly thought you were the advocate assigned to the case. I just looked, and someone else is looking into the situation. Spylab 16:05, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism???

You said: "Hi - I know that the addition of incorrect information to articles is frustrating, but in this case, it doesn't really qulify for vandalism per WP:VAND, but there are other warnings to use (WP:WARN) for unsourced additions to, for example, biographies of living people. I think these are more appropriate, as they teach the newcomer, rather than biteing him/her. Thanks :)"

I disagree. The information was being changed from that presented on the official profile pages to information that appears to be a person's best guess. These were not unsourced additions, they were the replacement of well-sourced information with information of, at best, dubious accuracy. Given that this was being done to multiple articles and that in all cases, the information was changed from that presented on a reliable source, it appeared to be a deliberate attempt to reduce the accuracy of these pages. --Yamla 21:17, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

Relist?

I should point out that (unlike AFD, but like RFD and CFD) TFD has traditionally employed the reasoning that if nobody objects, the template can be deleted - this is mainly because the page is rather long and tends to be backlogged, and suggesting that nominations with "no objections" should be relisted is basically encouraging people to rubberstamp everything. Note that TFD is watched by a lot of people and it is unlikely for them to miss a nomination they would have objected to. The reason we're extra cautious about AFD is that articles are actual content, and templates/categories/redirects are meta-content. Yours, (Radiant) 14:51, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

So are they blocked because of the autoblock? Nishkid64 21:02, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
You're being gullible. =) Just kidding. This user is up to no good. He (assuming its a guy) made a new account called Redemptionbot and vandalized my page. The bot was blocked by Aksi great, but it's also a sockpuppet of Galactian. (the idiot actually put up the notice on his user page that the bot was being run by Galactian). This guy is up to no good, so we shouldn't believe him. Nishkid64 21:11, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
I'm always a bit worried about indefinite blocks, so I avoid them altogether. Perhaps a 6-month or 1-year block? Nishkid64 21:24, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
O.o we don't want that many problems. I would speculate it would re-assign every month or two, or something like that. Anyway, go ahead and block, I guess. Nishkid64 21:36, 22 November 2006 (UTC)
Going to the gym right now so I won't be back for a few hours, but I suggest you just indefinitely block that guy. It's the same person. He's trying to make it seem like that Molag Bal/Sunderland/Galactian was another guy. Nishkid64 21:42, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Nice!

Just started using NPWatcher...looks great and very useful! One feature that might be useful is a dynamic resize...currently none of the stuff actually increases/decreases when you resize the window. Also, an automatic refresh of the list of new pages would be cool. As far as the delete buttons go, an extra field to type in a custom reason for "Delete (without reason)" would be nice. Gzkn 03:30, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Also, just want to let you know I'm fairly comfortable with C# and I have MS Visual C# Express, so if you need/want help with code (and if this is coded in C#), I'd be happy to help! Gzkn 07:01, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

MartinbotII for Wikipedia 1.0

Hi Martin - congratulations on your new mop & bucket! Sorry I missed seeing your RfA. I wanted to ask if MartinbotII had been approved for our planned use on WP:1.0? I did a podcast recording on Version 0.5 for Wikipedia Weekly recently (Episode 5 - and I mentioned MartinbotII several times!), and someone (I forget who, now) said, "Consider your application for MartinbotII approved!" Have you heard anything offical? We have begun work on Version 0.7, and it is planned that this would use MartinBotII. Once we get the officiall approval, can you let me know, so we can proceed - unless you're too busy of course! Many thanks once again, Walkerma 04:13, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

Ashok kundapur, my objections

Good day to you, Martinp23... In first nominated this article for deletion for a number of reasons. And I will list them here:

1) The article is self-written (I think) because the user who wrote it shares the name w/ the subject. This is usually something frowned apon.
2) The article does not list a person of especial importance or notability. He is a mildly succesful academic/engineer. If his "solar cooker" takes off, then he would be notable. (It sounds like a crank or flash-in-the-plan invention).
3) I'm not sure about the copyright status of the graphic, nor indeed of the article itself.
4) Thereby, please consider deleting said article

re: lowering protection

Under the assumption that there won't be a large-scale edit war on this template, there shouldn't be too much of a problem (AFAIK performing a DoS attack using high-use template requires many high-use templates to be changed at the same time, not a single one, which only floods the job queue.) There has been a discussion to change the template the last two weeks and certain users get frustrated when only admins have the ability to change the template. —Ruud 13:59, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Non-deleted "Deleted" template

Hi, you closed a TFD at Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2006 November 18#Template:Newpagelinksmain as "Delete" but didn't delete it yet. I am thinking this was possibly an oversight. When it is deleted, we could remove November 18 from the TFD page :) Just letting you know in case you didn't! -- Renesis (talk) 16:25, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Sheesh... sorry again. I thought you said "there is a bot" instead of "is there there a bot...?" :) Anyway, I know there are bots for substing, but I don't know about other types of template removal or conversion. I suppose it would depend on the type of template removal that is being done. There are some subst-ing bots listed at Wikipedia:Subst. Parodies featured on Arthur DRV

Hi Martin,

I know you're a newer admin -- here's the thing: there are no "no consensus" closures at DRV. DRV is simply a forum for cloture, and (after discounting any newbies or clearly nutty arguments) majority rules, at least on the question of endorsing or relisting. (To take further action, like "Overturn AND DELETE", a regular consensus of approx. 75% is required. If a majority overturns, but there is no regular consensus to delete, one relists.) By my count, the majority on Arthur endorsed closure, and I would not have relisted. However, as a participant in that debate, my opinion on the close doesn't matter. Since the matter has been relisted now, we'll assumed you discounted several folks to reach an appropriate count. I will modify the close to remove the words "no consensus", however, since no consensus closures at DRV are impossible. (In the event of a "tie" at DRV, relisting occurs, by the way.) If you have any questions, feel free to ask, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it now. Best wishes, Xoloz 15:44, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

That's one of those cases of our ever-editable guidelines getting askew of reality, but it certainly makes clear what you did, and why you did it. :) That line might be trying to convey the "in the event of a tie, then relist" scenario -- but, in any case, I'll strike the line. If we allow "no consensus" closes of DRVs (and thus have "no consensus" on whether or not even to discuss a thing), my head may explode. :) Best wishes, Xoloz 16:04, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

I actually work in politics (objectively and unafiliated) and what had been written before was clearly unfair, bias propaganda.

Not really sure why was this bias material on the site? yet im banned for removing it ?

just seems unfair to me.

Another issue: slow-down by nested templates

From my understanding of how the database works, it gets slowed down by the use of templates, which is why subst'ing is generally encouraged. These "standardised" navigational templates now each are a template in a template in a template (feel free to check if you don't believe it). That's going to slow down page loading, and by extension, the database, a whole damn lot. Is this acceptable? - Samsara (talk  contribs) 23:08, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Help with a bot

Hi, Martin:

A wikifriend of mine is trying to formulate a bot to capture and replicate data from all the pages in a particular category. He is a programmer in RL, but he doesn't have experience with WP bots. His name is Mortice, and the proposal for his bot is here. I said I would chat up some of the folks I know who do bots in the hopes that you might be able to give him some pointers. Could you go and check out his proposal and maybe introduce yourself? I know he'd appreciate the support and feedback. To be more specific, what he wants to do is to manually edit all the Simpsons episode pages to add a standard section listing the songs used in each episode, and then use the bot to generate a master list. Sounds to me like a neat idea that might revolutionise some of the TV show categories. Thanks in advance! Anchoress 22:41, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi Martin, I'm the Mortice of which Anchoress types. I'm planning on implementing this thing using Python - have read up at m:Using the python wikipediabot but bound to have some questions so would be great to bounce them off anyone. For instance, I'm going to need to find out how to read a list of all the pages that belong to a category, hopefully by a more organised method than reading the category page and picking through the links on it. Thanks for any tips or pointers --Mortice 22:48, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
Hi Anchoress and Mortice - unfortunately I'm just going offline now (sleep awaits...), but tomorrow afternoon (UTC), I'll take a proper look when I'll have some spare time, and I'll do what I can to help (I write most of my bots in MS C#, but have a bit of familiarity with the python framework - I've got one bot running using it and one in pseudo-development (ie - I'm thinking of whether to do it or not!) :)) Thanks - Martinp23 22:52, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
By the way - it looks like a great idea! Martinp23 22:54, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

FYI I've started work on this bot (easier than I thought) and requested approval at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/ListGenBot --Mortice 13:28, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Bot deployment advice

Hiya, I've been developing my ListGenBot using pywikipedia and Python - all come along nicely, though a few days ago I'd never seen a single line of Python!

I'd be interested to know if you have any advice about deployment for real-world use (once it's been fully approved - only approved for test at the moment). Questions such as:

  • When I make a call to perform a wiki task (such as reading a page), it sometimes displays that it's waiting a few seconds before doing the task. I was originally thinking I would add a pause in the loop to prevent runaway processing, but can I safely assume I don't need to because of these pauses inserted by the pywiki subsystem?
  • I was originally thinking I would process all pages then pause for, say, 60 seconds before restarting. I suspect that it's going to take more than 60 seconds to read all pages once the bot is in serious use. So I wonder if it's the right thing to do to run 'continuously', ie run through all pages then start again, relying on the pywiki pausing to moderate its use. Pages are only written if it's needed (it reads a page and if it's the same as the page it would have written, it does nothing) so it will be very rare for the bot to write anything, but desirable to have it done relatively quickly if it's needed. Does 'continuously' sound okay?
  • It seems like the right thing to publish the source of the bot (the amount of wiki code is quite minimal, most of it is text processing). In the event that my server is long-term out of use, I'd want someone to be able to take over the bot's work. Is there a standard for publishing the source, or should I just put a link from the bot's user page?
  • (additional question) I seem to recall reading somewhere about the bot should be coded to stop if it gets a new item on its talk page - is there a recommended process for this using pywiki?
  • Anything else I should know?

Thanks :) --Mortice 22:27, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

Downtown (song)

Hello

So sorry to bother you (again) with this ridiculous situation, but I fear your help is needed again on the Downtown (song) article. SFTVLGUY2 has consistantly removed additions made to the article - and has not followed the emerging consensus on the discussion page to follow the Angels (song) model. He has removed additions made by other users - notabley Hotwiki - that follow that consensus, and instead claims the higher ground when he so clearly is not taking others into consideration.

The situation is beyond a joke - and I would appreciate your help in settling this article once and for all, please. Rimmers 23:29, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

Hi; SFTVLGUY2 yet again completely gone against the consensus created on the article; he has removed all edits I made to the article last night, including removing references/sources, links to relevant articles and removing any and all other additions - despite you saying there should be a no revert rule. I would like to request that SFTVLGUY2 face disciplinary action. Given you have stated there shouldnt be an edit war, I have refrained from removed his most recent changes - so I would like to ask that you revert his changes (back to version by "88.157.57.131" at 14:21, 1 December 2006), merge the article back into one and perhaps even lock the article to prevent further abuse. To say this is ridiculous is a understatement, but SFTVLGUY2's abuse and sheer disregard for the consesus emerging on the talk page (including disregarding your comments) leave me with no other options... Rimmers 16:08, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

I certainly didn't intend my move to be "disruptive." More than one person suggested a separate article and I felt this was a viable solution, given this issue never will be resolved satisfactorily for all who have engaged in the discussion. Had I named the article Petula Clark's Downtown when I first wrote it, this problem never would have arisen at all. If you check my long history and the numerous articles I've created, I think you'll agree my intent is to improve Wikipedia in a number of areas, unlike the Spice Girls posse, whose sole interest seems to be in promoting Emma Bunton. The Downtown article has become ridiculously long and cluttered, particularly with Rimmer's changes to the first sections devoted to the original recording. He seems intent on using as many superfluous charts as possible (I've never seen an article with as many as this one has - if we need "chart trajectories" for the UK and Germany, then why not one for every country where it charted?), and rearranging sections out of sensible sequence (for example, the subhead re: popular culture references should come immediately after the info re: Clark, since it's her version that has been referenced.) And I still maintain a Bunton template has no place in this article; it belongs only in the one specifically about her. If Clark had a template, I would feel the same way. Thanks. Thanks, user:Martinp23! This is very helpful! When does the following exception become relevant: However, Jimbo Wales has suggested semi-protection may be used in cases of "minor bios of slightly well known but controversial individuals" which are not widely watchlisted, if they are "subject to POV pushing, trolling [or] vandalism." In such cases, semi-protection "would at least eliminate the drive-by nonsense that we see so often."[1]?

Many thanks for sorting out my user sandbox and putting it in the right place. I thought I'd created the page as a sub-directory of my user name but obviously I got it wrong. Many thanks for putting me on the right track. Dahliarose 23:46, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

I was requesting the page to be deleted, not to be saved. I was placing the delete tag upon the page. If you would have checked the page's history before it was deleted, you would have known that. Are you a new admin? Bearly541 02:07, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Hi, I do not use a program to place "speedy delete" tags upon pages which need to be deleted. Also, it was about 60 seconds after I placed the tag on the page, and you deleted the page. Maybe my browser runs slower than yours. However, please take into consideration about those factors. Next, time use your mind to determine whether or not a user needs to be "warned" about creating an insufficient page, rather than the person doing the same thing as you are, and wanting to speedy delete the page. Case closed. Thank you! Bearly541 22:55, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

NP patrol tool

You left a note at the talk page for WP:RCP about a new NP patrol tool. I'm interested in trying it out if you're still looking for beta testers.--Kchase T 08:26, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

OK, I'm approving you now - thanks for your interest - I'm going to do what I hope will be a near fional release in about an hour, in which I'll have everything that I've envisioned it needing, and then for the rest of the releases until I'm happy with it, I'll be bug fixing and getting the gui looking better :). Thanks Martinp23 16:12, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
It's giving me an error message about no approval.--Kchase T 18:02, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
OK - the problem was that you were on the approval list as "Kchase02", but you logged in a "kchase02" - it's a minor annoyance whicjh I'll be fixing soon (one of the bugs mentioned above) but as a workaround, I've added both possibilities to the list. If it still doesn't work, could you confirm what the error message is saying (version not approve,d or user not approved)? Thanks Martinp23 18:09, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
Oh, duh; should have known. It's working now. Thanks.

Speedy delete

Is there any reason why Category:Coragyps cannot be deleted? Speedy delete allows for the deletion of empty categories and I emptied myself because the one article that used it did so incorrectly. JohnCastle 21:48, 4 December 2006 (UTC)

Template for deletion

Hi Martin, when you remove the last old discussions left in WP:TFD, could you please not add instead a line saying "No old discussions" ? This has a tendency to confuse User:Zorglbot which does the automatic update of this pages, and complains about seeing parasite lines. Of course, I could also teach him to recognise this line and remove it when new pages are added, but this would require editors to always use the exact same text, which is probably a bit too much to add. Thanks, Schutz 00:05, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

I'm not sure why you re-protected the List of Arab scientists and scholars article so quickly. It was less than twenty-four hours between your unprotection and reprotection, and not a whole lot occurred within that timeframe. -- tariqabjotu 02:47, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

Why did you protect this list again? How are we going to expand this list if its going to be continuesly protected? Was is it becasue of User:Khoikhoi? Did you actually read what that abusive user(check his talk page and block log) reverted? And lastly, can you please unprotect it again?Jidan 11:25, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
Thank you Martin! Jidan 11:43, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
I need your advice martin. I want to expand this list but I know sooner or later it will be reverted again by this Khoiko or his friends. I don't want this list to be protected again. BTW, have you checked what Khoiki reverted?Jidan 11:47, 2 December 2006 (UTC)
Martinp23, did you look at the history of that page? User:Jidan is continually reverting that article to add people who weren't Arab, against the consensus of other editors. He's on a one-man crusade against 5-6 editors. --Mardavich 13:06, 2 December 2006 (UTC)

I share that sentiment. Khoikhoi is a well respected admin here Martinp23 09:31, 3 December 2006 (UTC)

Dear Martin, since its creation, the article has been based upon this disclaimer: This is a list of scientists and scholars associated with the Arab World and Islamic Spain (Al-Andalus) that lived from antiquity up until the beginning of the modern age. In some cases, their exact ancestry in unclear. They may have emigrated or immigrated, and thus may appear in other "Lists of...", but nevertheless their names and work are linked to the words "Arab", and "Arabic". Which was suggested by admin User:Alex Bakharev, and is the same as List of Iranian scientists and List_of_Russians#Scientists. The Iranians were against this list since the beginning. They wanted a list of muslims, while of course having the privilage to keep list of iranian scientist[5], but then we have a consenus to keep it like this(see the discussion). Now they are back, again! Your help as a neutral observer is highly appreciated (BTW, Khoikhoi is not! see his arbitration [6]) Cheers, Jidan 11:22, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Your Bot

Hello Martinp23. I just wanted to tell you that your bot reverted from my reversion of vandalism to the previous form.

Here's what happened:

  1. Someone vandalized (same diff)
  2. I reverted to a previous version using popups (same diff)
  3. That version was blanked, by the same user (same diff)
  4. I reverted myself to the last good edit ([8] diff)
  5. Your bot reverted back to #1 (diff)

I just wanted to ask if I could remove the warning on my talk page, since it was only a mistake, which I quickly changed. Or is that not allowed? | AndonicO Talk | Sign Here 23:16, 5 December 2006 (UTC)

Apparently last night I'm sure Nishkid64 commented on Welcomebot blanking 15 pages, welcomebot hasn't done anything, look at its contributions!. Sheogarath 16:31, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

This Ip is certainly gibraltarian

I was searching through the article Gibraltar and it appears that the banned sock puppet master vandal has returned again. They suspect it's gibraltarian but I don't think they've blocked it. I've picked up the evidence through the edits, of Gibraltar and the British overseas territories, they're exactly the same edits as Gibraltar, the article Gibraltar has now been proctected from him and his sockpuppets. User talk:212.120.227.108 Sheogarath 19:00, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Also, they haven't blocked the Ip. But the Ip location is in Gibraltar, and by the edits I can say, that this is him, block the ip forever. Sheogarath 19:01, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

There is no point whatsoever in blocking that IP as its part of a pool and is dynamically allocated. If the problem continues, there are more direct methods which can be used. Please distinguish between a user called 'gibraltarian' and Gibraltrian IP's (like mine) --Gibnews

adding an sprotect template does not protect the page!

Ah but it seems to have scared him off :) --Gibnews 23:43, 8 December 2006 (UTC)

Proposed new "getting started" page for writing bots your opinion?

I think there is confusion on how to go about starting a bot (eg here and here) and there is no wikipage covering this, the main bot page talks only about policy, not avenues for getting started, how to make a bot etc. I have made a suggestion that a howto page be established and, as a frequent editor helping out with bots, I would appreciate your comments. Waggle Dance

Dear Martin

In the article on the "Waggle Dance" there appears the following statement:

"it is now known that a round dance is simply a waggle dance with a very short waggle run"

There are no references nor any supporting documentation for this blanket generalization. "It is now known" -- when? and by whom? I am not saying that it is not true, it is. The information is very new and may require the entomology textbooks to be rewritten. I am just wondering who posted this and what their sources are.
