Hello Elia, while it's good that you've added some links to newspaper articles, there are more steps needed. First off, your articles are just lumped at the bottom, with no indication of how those news articles support your Wikipedia article, so what you want is to turn them into WP:Footnotes. Let's say you have a sentence that says "John Smith was in the US Army for 12 years before he ran for the Montana Congress", right after that you want a footnote saying "An Interview with Congressman Smith. Helena Times, 20 April 2013", so the reader knows that if he wants verification that Smith did 12 years in the army, he can just follow the link to an article that says so.
Basically, for every grouping of facts, you want a footnote. If you say he was born in X place and went to Y school, you want a footnote to some book or news piece which says this. The article shows you know many facts about Chen, but where did you get these facts? Where should the reader go to see these facts proved? This is why we need footnotes. Please add in footnotes (see WP:Referencing for beginners and WP:Footnotes for help), and then hit "Resubmit" so we can review again. Facts that you simply know personally are not admissible, because a reader has no way of verifying them. That's not to say that they're false, simply that they don't help a reader because he has no support for them. This is called WP:Original research, and while talking to someone is a vital skill for a reporter or historian, it is not what is used in an encyclopedia. If you know something because Chen told you so, but it's not written down anywhere in a newspaper article or political science book, then it can't be in the article. If the fact appears in a newspaper article next month, then we can add it, with footnote to the newspaper article. In the same way, you cannot cite the Wikipedia page in Hebrew, because it is a compilation of facts, not the original record. Now, if the WP Hebrew page states a fact and has a footnote to an article in Hebrew from a newspaper, you can certainly copy that footnote and add it and its facts to the article here. You may find it very helpful to read WP:Verifiability, which gives a good explanation of what can and cannot be used on Wikipedia. Thanks! MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:32, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

Ok since we live in Israel mostly the information is from Hebrew news articles and websites. I added six references from the media and a publication to back these facts. Please accept it I have to move on with my life. I have to move on I have been working on this for so long. Please please please. I would never make up facts. Its all true. He is an Israeli journalist. Please help and publish this so I can move on with my life and get married and have a family and a house. Please

That's not a problem at all: so long as it is a WP:Reliable source it's fine to use Hebrew news articles and the like, in any language. The footnotes you've added look reasonable, though it'd be best to format them into full WP:Citations for cleanliness. So far as "moving on", Wikipedia:Wikipedia has no deadline, so there's no rush. We're not going to publish a piece that's not ready just because someone is in a hurry. There's no need at all to delay getting married an having a family over an article (?!?!?!?), but if you want to just spend a few minutes a week on it you could get it cleaned up pretty easily. If you think it'll be more than a month before you get back to it, let me know and I can have it moved to your Sandbox for safe-keeping, and you can Submit it whenever you have it ready. No hurries, but we want to make sure the article is done properly so we're being fair to Chen and not doing an improper article. MatthewVanitas (talk) 19:01, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

OK I wont postpone my wedding and having kids. I added the format with the publication or news source; and the date--so people can see that everything is backed either by a government ministry, a newspaper article, a financial paper, or one of our tv networks. I think it is clear now. I prefer not to safe-keep it but have it reviewed and accepted so I can resume things I would do before editing on Wikipedia, like studying and spending time with my family and writing. Hey man, this is very well done. One can nitpick anything, but I don't see any reason at all you shouldn't go ahead and publish. Are you familiar enough with WP:Categories to make sure it's cat'ed right, or do you need a hand with that?
As it is it's great, but one of the things that would really perk it up would be any imagery. Do you know of any old printed depictions of his actually reciting the speech (not just the hanging itself)? Or is there any photo of the actual sheet of paper he used? If the paper exists it'd be great to add mention of what archive holds it. Alternately, whether for the main photo or just the Sondheim bit, I see on GoogleImages that there are some photos from productions of Assassins which show the cakewalk; if you can reach out to anyone who's taken photos of productions of the play and has a photo of that scene they're willing to release to the Public Domain, that'd be a neat addition.
Thanks for your great work; I first heard this song only a few years after the film came out (my uncle was huge into theater). Really well done, and I hope you'll continue to bring your talents to Wikipedia. MatthewVanitas (talk) 23:35, 30 June 2013 (UTC)
I've created 50 articles, so I'll be fine with categories. The only reason I asked a Teahouse question about the notability was because it was a 26-line poem recited by the least-famous American presidential assassin right before his execution, so I wasn't sure if it could be AfD'ed. As for pictures, that's not my thing, and I looked on Commons to find that there were no depictions of Guiteau's hanging, much less his reading, there. There was one picture I found in The Smart Aleck's Guide to American History by Adam Selzer et al. of him singing the first verse, but I'm not sure if that image is public domain. öBrambleberry of RiverClan 13:39, 1 July 2013 (UTC)

FOCIS article

Matthew,

Thanks so much for that information. I was reading the instructions page on how to create an article, and it did mention that I needed to have have specific notability of FOCIS. I was not aware that Wikipedia worked in the way that you described. I do however have one question: I noticed that directly after an Album or Movie, etc. is released, Wikipedia seems to have an article about that item a few days later. I would like to know how the user or creator of the article retrieves enough information on the internet despite the fact that the item being described has JUST been released... and Wikipedia accepts it ? No worries, glad to help with reviewing. A few points:
  • The main thing: we definitely should have an article on this group, so let's state that clearly right out. So that's a good start.
  • No, having the AC write its own article about itself, citing itself, it 100% absolutely not going to work. We can cite AC for very basic facts (year of establishment, 501(c)(3) status etc) but that's it. Basically about every other fact stated needs to be substantiated by some other source such as media, gov't documents, academic mention, etc.
  • While it is not absolutely prohibited for a group to write its own article, please be aware of the policies WP:Conflict of interest. Let me explicitly state our standard warning:
Wikipedia's Law of Unintended Consequences

If you write about yourself, your group or your company, once the article is created, you have no right to control its content, or to delete it outside the normal channels. Content is irrevocably added with every edit. If there is anything publicly available on a topic that you would not want to have included in an article, note that it will probably find its way there eventually.
  • Okay, presuming you want to proceed with this. here's what has to happen:
    • Before you do anything else, you must change your username. It's currently a violation since it represents an organisation rather than an individual. You either need to change it to a nickname of your choice, or you can even mention the AC but have it be a specific person: "User:Ricky from Armenian Caucus" or "User:Raidersfan47 Armenian Caucus". It might actually be best that you keep mention of AC in your username so that you're being transparent about your involvement. If there's more than one of you, you each need a separate nickname account, since account sharing is prohibited (thus the rule against having a "group" name).     • Next, on the WP:Userpage for your new personal name, maybe add a little blurb at top saying "I work for (am a membe or, whatever) the Armenian Caucus, I have read WP:Conflict of interest and I will work with other editors to make sure the article remains neutral, and will ask Car
    • There are a ton of mentions of AC in academic books available on GoogleBooks. Hundreds of mentions. You can go into those books, use http://reftag.appspot.com to convert the gBooks urls to proper footnotes. So if the article says (for example) "the Smith Foundation received a letter of praise from the Dalai Lama in 1983", there should be a footnote to some book like "The Lama and the West. J. Smith, Cambridge Press (1989)". Ideally you should use AC's own site only for basic facts, and as an "official site" link at the bottom. So I suggest you get digging into books and news articles.

Newly created article

Thanks for approving my article on Calcis! This was my first article I've created, and I forgot an important part. The article doesn't need to be named "Calcis." Instead, it should be named "Calcis, Alabama." I can't seem to find how to change that, so if you could help me out I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

It does not yet need to have the name changed; there is currently no other article called "Calcis" on Wikipedia, and thus no need to distinguish this article from another of similar title (yet). It's a good start in that you have the formatting and coding down very well, but now a good step would be adding a little bit about the history or significance of the town, backed up by reliable sources such as news articles, books of local/state history that mention Calcis, etc. Also if you live nearby one or two photos would be a good supplement; you can upload photos to Wikimedia Commons so that they can be shared across all Wikimedia projects. Leo Sarkisian

Hi Matthew - You just approved the Leo Sarkisian page for me. I realized that there are two very different Leo Sarkisians (one who was an advocate for Armenian Americans and one who did the Voice of America shows in Africa). The former is the one I wish to create a page for, though they both deserve pages. But part of my assignment by my employer is to do the former because a lot of Armenians know nothing about him.

Can you erase all the references to VoA and I'll start citing more about the Sarkisian that was an advocate for Armenians? Thank you and sorry for the confusion.

I almost wondered if that was the case; thinking back I should've checked that more carefully when I first started wondering. I wrote my first new Wikipedia article today, the one about folk music band HogMaw. You were kind enough to move it to "Articles for Creation". I just wanted to say "thanks".

RadioFan rejected the article on grounds of lack of notability. I wish I understood why a major regional radio station and two major regional online publications do not fulfill Wikipedia's notability and verifiability requirements. As an author published in two academic journals in two fields, I must say I find the application of Wikipedia's requirements puzzling.

In any case, while I was taken aback by RadioFan's terse response to my inquiries, I appreciate you moving the article. With any luck, The New York Times will cover HogMaw soon, or the submission of articles from folk bands will be more welcome so their important contributions to music aren't lost amidst bands with gold records and PR firms.

It isn't required that articles exist on the Web, or that they be in English. What is required is that they be Reliable, Independent, Published sources. So we can't accept WP:Original research like conducting field interviews or digging up personal letters from archives, because an encyclopedia can only use "digested" materials that have already been cleaned up and researched by academics and journalists. If you're not sure what counts, check Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources.
That said, newspapers are generally a good source, so if you have old news clippings that exist on paper but not online, that's fine. Just make sure you give a full citation, such as that a reader could theoretically go to a Michigan library and look this up on the old microfiche. Hit the "Cite" button at the top of your edit window, and fill in all the needed details for your source for a given sentence/paragraph, and it will create an automatic footnote for you. I've redressed the 'tone' problem & shall shortly insert the references you've posted. I note you have a line through my first reference, which I repeat a few times. Not sure why. I can use a latter reference in its place, but the one cited is the original. & I don't know how to remove the sentence & word you have lined through. I've tried. Without your hands-on help, I'd have eventually given up on the submission. It's like landing in a foreign country where I don't speak the language. So thanks heaps. No worries; regarding the "crossed out" reference, I didn't intend to do that, and glancing at it I'm not seeing how that's happening. So don't fret that ref, it looks fine overall, and when we clean up the formatting we'll look to catch whatever misplaced bit of code is crossing that out. The only things I intentionally crossed out, with the <s> and </s> formatting, were some off-Tone bits that were more flowery than encyclopedic, and I also marked a few too-twee bits like "guests of the Crown" or whatnot (aside from being cutesy, as a non-Australian I'm not even sure what that means, prisoners?). So yeah, encyclopedic writing isn't particularly fun or dramatic, but it is pretty concise and clear, so it's a certain style. Nice work so far, ping my Talk if you hit any snags. And yes, pictures would be a very great addition, especially if you have ones you personally took that you can upload to Wikimedia Commons as "Creative Commons" so the whole world can use them. Penguin General Cemetery - again

More thanks Matthew. (& glad something happened which you too don't understand - makes me feel better!). Since you're the only person getting back to me with detail & any sense, I need more help please. I cannot add references into my edit box using templates. Sometimes, after hrs of trying, I can get it to work, but then don't know exactly what it is I do that's correct. Closing down my PC & rebooting sometimes helps. Beats me. I log in. Hit the contribution button, then the current version, which is in read mode. I then hit the edit button which pulls up the edit box. I then try to use the cite dropdown template box in the edit zone, hit the line I want & nothing happens. It is on this simple function I have wasted 11 hrs thus far. What am I doing wrong please? And while I've got you, I uploaded the picture (File:Penguin General Cemetery, Penguin, Tasmania, Australia.jpg) & have successfully got it to my page, though perhaps not in the correct place. But I GOT it there (Ya!). I need to link my article to one already on Wiki (File: Penguin, Tasmania) but have not been successful in doing this.Finally, I can add a few current websites for verification, hoping this will be straight forward. Then I reckon I should be ready to re-resubmit. Thanks for everything Matthew. However, though I may not be smart enough to publish articles successfully, I know better than to try and use Wikipedia to advertise. The reason my pages are so bare is because I am trying to keep them non-promotional.

I am sorry for tying up Wikipedia editors, but I wouldn't have to if you guys weren't vague and inconsistent. You can tell me as many times as you like that my sources aren't reliable, but that doesn't help me when I've tried all sorts of sources--from scientific books to WorldCat entries. I don't really know how much more reliable and non-biased you can get than a book published by Cornell about how to grow perennial plants. This is a verifiable source, unless I'm much mistaken.

As for notability, I guess I could say that our publications largely command the largest market share in their respective industries, but that's based on our own data, which you wouldn't trust, and by reports from marketing firms that I can't disclose to a site like Wikipedia. There's only so much I can say about notability without sounding like an advertiser.

We've got multiple publications online (other than The Diapason and Imaging News Technology--I'm pretty sure you guys published the latter). These are about as notable as the ones I'm trying to get online and are not sourced in a more extensive way. I have been trying to use other Wikipedia pages as a guide, but this has failed. Sourcing in footnotes, sourcing at the same level as these other pages--none of it has allowed pages such as Lawn and Garden Retailer to be published. If I can't learn how to do a Wikipedia article correctly from these and from my own attempts to publish, as well as two help desk requests, is it possible that I'm never going to "learn"? Or do I just need to wait for a Wikipedia editor to come along who deems my article appropriate, or for there to be a day when you're running on a standard that allows my article to be published?

I'm as frustrated as all of the editors are with these articles. Try not to take this as a personal attack, it's just based on the experience I've had with you guys so far. Gulpingguppy (talk) 17:22, 11 July 2013 (UTC)

Greetings, as the message indicates, the article was deleted because it was a WP:Copyright violation of the blog. Nobody is saying the blog isn't true, they're saying (quite rightly) that you can't just copy-paste material from other websites into Wikipedia. Does that make more sense? Gary Thomas (Author) Wiki

Thanks for reviewing my the page I submitted.

In your review you said I basically needed to: 1. Prove his nobility and 2. Do that through independent sources.

Thomas is a pretty well known guy with book sales way over a million--he has over 600,000 on just one of his books alone. He speaks at all kinds of Christian conferences. And he preaches at the 2nd biggest church in the United States.

If I can back all of this information up with independent sources, and I should be able to, can I do it without having to change what I wrote that much? Or am I looking at a script makeover?

Also, in the beliefs section, those are summaries of his ideas by looking for his thesis's in his papers and books. I am a student at Princeton and I know that paraphrasing author's thesis themselves by citing the author, without citing independent source, is a kosher thing to do in the world of academia. So surely this can stay without independent sources, correct?

Greetings, regarding notability, we're talking WP:Notability (the policy) more that literally "is a person who may be worth noting". What we need to see is evidence that others have found him worth writing about (journalists, academics, etc). If he preaches at the 2d biggest US church, presumably newspapers or magazines have discussed his filling that role? You can cite very non-contentious things to a bio of him on a publisher's or church's website, but anything about his accomplishements, impacts, etc. has to be from an outside, neutral source.
So far as citing his beliefs/works/statements: it's a bit of a fine line. Certainly there are points in many articles where we quote a writer's key statements, but what you want to avoid is creating your own personal take on him. That is, if for example a guy is mostly famous for writing about the American Revolution, but also writes about birdwatching, and you like birdwatching so quote a lot of his works despite the fact that his AmRev works have caused great discussion and controversy, then that would be WP:Undue slant even though you are technically presenting his ideas. Probably a safe way to go is to note which books/statements he's famous-er for, so you can say things like "Smith's 2003 book History of Acme engendered great controversyfootnotes of academic journals arguing, particularly Smith's statement that Acme had copied many of its designs from the Zapme corporation..."
Keep as your key concept: an encyclopedia is a tertiary source, that is we take existing views on a topic and summarise them, but we don't create new ways of viewing things. So figure out what the general world perspective on this guy is, present that, and footnote it in ways that we can say "why yes, per these footnotes he is seen as having a great impact on XYZ, though the Foo faction disagrees with his method Y."

Penguin General Cemetery - yet again

Another rejection Matthew. My frustration is that a 7-word feedback about not thoroughly reliable sources tells me nothing about what I should do. What is it exactly I have to do, or am doing wrong? Should I simply quit because any other references are very much of the same ilk as those already cited? (Not that I want to quit, I'd really like to see the entry succeed.) I've cited primary sources $ secondary sources about the primary, all directly verifiable, though not all have a direct weblink. I cannot think of any overarching tertiary confirmatory source I can cite. Or is it that I need to provide more information in just some of the references already cited rather than provided more references, which is quite a different issue & likely easily redressed? Languages of Khyber-Puhktunkhwa (Map)

The map titled above, which has been added on numerous ages is incorrect and biased towards pahstuns. This Map shows other languages as majority in districts where pashto is clearly a majroity. The said districts are Battagram, Toorghar, Tank, Shangla and Karak. Penguin ....Photo uploads+

Hello Matthew. (I am assuming that contacting you here is what is called pinging you.) I'm going to modify some of the references in my recently uploaded (novice) page. And upload two more images. Two questions re the latter. Will they end up in the correct place on the page or do I abracadabra them somehow? I did successfully upload the existing image (but into the wrong part of my page (Penguin General Cemetery), which was corrected for me. Also what about image quality please? Re the citations, I'm assuming that in the edit screen I simply add to the existing reference sequence the insertion I want. These are mainly URLs, with one new reference for which I'm hoping the template will work but if not I can sequence the information anyway (I think). A final question. The current page is asking for a citation re convict burials. There is no information whatsoever on this claim apart from one of the images I'll be uploading - a recently erected monument, by descendants, which clearly states the late 1800s burial had been a 'guest of the crown' (convict). Thanks for your work on the Pomeroy surname...

Thanks Matthew for your input on the Pomeroy surname page and your additions to it. I am the original writer of the article and a Pomeroy family member. I did have to change a few of your additions to make them more current with the tremendous ongoing work by several family members including Annie of the british "twig" site, Alma of the american "connections" site and Chris a current historian and Pomeroy family DNA researcher( lecture /speach on uk national archives regarding dna studies via podcast .Chris Pomroy is his correct spelling but he uses both). So many Pomeroys need articles as you would see on both those sites that its incredible the one that immediately that comes to mind today which would be Eltweed Pomeroy not only grandfather to almost half the current population of usa pom's but father to USA town hall meetings.. I wish I could get into writing or recruit other family members to contribute here but they obviously are very busy with their own family sites or just life in general. another pom not on here discovered or was first to see a certain metalurgic occurence at the university of BC that also should be on. Honestly so many in our family should have a wiki article and linked under the pomeroy banner is quite amazing and something I will never truly believe many are modern, many old, one buried in Westminster Abbey isnt on here yet thats quite an honor from what i hear . I would encourage you as a writer simply to read the first 20 pages of the Book by AA Pom and or do a google search with pomeroy and a keyword, thats how i originally found my lineage was my surname with berry , which led to the castle and onward until I questioned those mentioned above and shared emails and lineages and documents because it was really surprising as i thought there were very very few of us.. cheers again and thanks hopefully you'll become interested enough to take on a few hours of time to which i can assure you will be as entertaining as the older stories and history from Britain and Ireland are awesome , i do guess it depends on your interests and where your from but i would think most have never heard the name despite its truly amazing 950 (soon1000 year old name, their is a family gathering for that anniversary in a few years . and hey if your ever want to give to a church... im not religious but i got the 88 year old vicar to put paypal on his website for the friends of berry pomeroy church built around 1490 and in Jane Austens movie.. but as a wiki user if you know other writers as i say the first 20 pages of AA Poms 100+ year old book available free on googlebooks and brings up 1000 year old stories to mind like romeo and juliet or robin hood type stories, its very very cool and all other users reading this, take interest for entertainment and write an article on a Pom for pleasure. the sites listed on the article are the most recent and their creators would probably be very helpful and help with citations , i would love to add more articles on my immediate family members such as an original world wide wrestler who was known as the mad russian or my cousin david the opera singer.. its hard to write about stuff close to you without bias but i believe whats written now is correct and confirmable without much problems.. cheers! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.67.169.199 (talk) 09:41, 25 July 2013 (UTC)

I appreciate you getting back to me with your comments on my Anthony Del Col article. I've researched some more information about Anthony, and I was wondering if it would grant him notable status:
Anthony has produced feature films in Canada, including exec producer on the Nelly Furtado Loose Live Album CD[1]. Anthony is also an accomplished film pitch consultant; He won the Telefilm Canada Pitch This contest in 2006[2] and 2010[3]. Anthony also served as a coach for the contest in 2011 and 2012.
Of course, if this information would warrant Anthony as notable, I would re-structure it to better incorporate it with the rest of the information in the unpublished article.

In addition, I've done some research on Wikipedia's criteria for a person's notability on the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(people)#Creative_professionals page. The article states that a Creative Professional might be considered notable if "The person has created, or played a major role in co-creating, a significant or well-known work, or collective body of work, that has been the subject of an independent book or feature-length film, or of multiple independent periodical articles or reviews." I would argue that Anthony Del Col's status as the co-creator of "Kill Shakespeare," a work that has been the subject of multiple articles and reviews (as I have demonstrated in the current article I'm attempting to create), could warrant him notability.
Please let me know your thoughts on the matters, and if there is anything further I can do to ensure the article's creation.
