Research into the user pages of Wikipedians: Invitation to participate

Greetings,

My name is John-Paul and I am a student with the University of Alberta specializing in Communications and Technology.

I would like to include your Wikipedia user page in a study I am doing about how people present themselves online. I am interested in whether people see themselves in different ways, online and offline. One of the things I am looking at is how contributors to Wikipedia present themselves to each other through their user pages. Would you consider letting me include your user page in my study?

With your consent, I will read and analyze your user page, and ask you five short questions about it that will take about ten to fifteen minutes to answer. I am looking at about twenty user pages belonging to twenty different people. I will be looking at all user pages together, looking for common threads in the way people introduce themselves to other Wikipedians.

I hope that my research will help answer questions about how people collaborate, work together, and share knowledge. If you are open to participating in this study, please reply to this message, on your User Talk page or on mine. I will provide you with a complete description of my research, which you can use to decide if you want to participate.

Thanks and NRHP photo contest

Thanks for taking the RRMOP pic, now I can delete one of my more embarrassing photos!

I've made a proposal for an NRHP photo contest and got a draft at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Fall 2011 Photo Contest started. I'd love to see any comments about that page, just to make sure that it is easily understandable, and that the contest would be workable. Any more help appreciated. It would be great if you list one or both of those challenges at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Fall 2011 Photo Contest. The only problem I could see is that you'd have to clearly specify that the judging would be subjective. I don't think the judging of either of these would be very time consuming. You also might just want to have the photos put in a gallery on the page - no need for diffs. Since there are only 9 days left before the contest should start, having somebody else participate as a sponsor would allow me to "make it official" and start putting up notices at other projects, e.g. WP:USA, railroads, ships, public art, city projects, and they might also want to sponsor a challenge. I think I'd also like to have a "Best Photograph" challenge, which of course would have completely subjective judging. Any idea on who would be a good sponsor for that? I think the DC list is ok now. I put in a request at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen.
and got turned down flat for help. So I did a redirect from the old NW quadrant article to the main DC article, put "copied from tags" on the three new NW quadrant articles. History saved, sites all renumbered. Thanks. Smallbones (talk) 02:56, 17 October 2011 (UTC)

Horseshoe Curve Map

I was seeking a map that showed why the curve was needed. This map does show where the railroad goes, heading west, but the shading does not quite show the elevations clearly enough. --DThomsen8 (talk) 12:19, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Mount Beacon Incline Railway

While adding templates to the Hudson Valley project, I came across the Mount Beacon Incline Railway article. There is a group attempting to get this railway back in operation by 2013. I thought you might be interested in reading about it.

Interesting...I believe it's one of the few that are curved. If they manage to get it operational, I might have to visit sometime.

Heading west

After a Lafayette College reunion tomorrow, my wife and I will be heading west to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, Johnstown (to see the flood museum and ride the Johnstown Inclined Plane), and Altoona, to see the Horseshoe Curve. Any other suggestions for my trip, where I will take lots of photos with my new GPS digital camera? --DThomsen8 (talk) 16:47, 1 June 2012 (UTC)

Neat, I assume Johnstown is the farthest west you're going? Between Gettysburg and Altoona is the Rockhill Trolley Museum in Rockhill; the museum runs all of its trolleys and lets you ride them (though the East Broad Top Railroad across the street is closed this year). A few minutes from Horseshoe Curve are the Gallitzin Tunnels in Gallitzin; there's a park next to the tracks and the tunnel portals that's worthy of a stop. I've never been there yet, but the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site is also between Altoona and Johnstown. Depending on how much time your planning on spending in Gettysburg (you can spend days there and still not see everything), you could stopover at Wheatland in Lancaster beforehand. My wife and I have been to Gettysburg before, but my choice there is to contact a local group seeking to rescue the Gettysburg National Museum electric map, which the park service may either destroy, or perhaps if the GPS provides a wavier for the asbestos, sell at auction. My wife and I saw the map in use the year before they shut it down. I may also stop off at the Pennsylvania Railroad Museum for information about a SEPTA bridge in Philadelphia. It appears we are able to use that photo, I shall have upload it. I have seen those locomotives in person, briefly...the Pennsylvanian flew by them while they were on a siding. We did see the Horseshoe Curve, and the Altoona Railroad Museum, and we rode the Johnstown Inclined Plane from the top along with our car, but we did not go to Gettysburg. I am pleased to see the Horseshoe Curve article on the main page, which got me to respond here. I am not sure if my request to the graphics people resulted in the map, or not, but the map does help explain why the curve was built. Hope you enjoyed yourselves. The one thing I have not seen (let alone gotten a photo of yet, and I went back to the Curve and Johnstown in August) is an auto on the Incline; not many people know that that is possible. I do believe that it was your request that got the map created and the map came out really well. Was a bit of a surprise that it was chosen for the Main Page, but a nice one. OK. One other problem with the split. I have been cleaning up the inbound links which were a mess after the split. Thanks for fixing my changes to the infobox about this. The NRHP lists both with the official name of Virginia and Truckee RR. Engines No. 18, The Dayton; and No. 22, The Inyo. You probably need to check the NRHP project on how to list this at Virginia and Truckee RR. Engines No. 18, The Dayton; and No. 22, The Inyo. Right now because of the redirect, it only points to one article. That needs to be fixed built I'm not sure what is appropriate in this case. I suggest you check on the project page for advice. My thinking is that while there would only be 2 entries, Virginia and Truckee RR. Engines No. 18, The Dayton; and No. 22, The Inyo should be a dab page.
