Musician entomologists

Would Georg Friedrich Treitschke be the man who worked with Ferdinand Ochsenheimer. I have gone ahead and marked him as a lepidopterist from whatever I could find on the net, but precious little available there. The monsoon ends soon, time to go out and see the rich life in the forests... cheers Shyamal 02:13, 19 August 2007 (UTC)

Thank you. Musician, actor, lepidopterist. What a wonderful combination. Good to see you back ! Shyamal 08:48, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Moving images

The only easy way to copy images from one wikipedia to the commons is to manually copy it from the German wikipedia to Hard-disk and hard-disk to commons and retain the permission statement as given. This is would be be fine in all cases except those marked as copyrighted fair-use images. Let me know the image in question and I could try to help as well. Shyamal 09:10, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of Galleria Alberto Sordi

A tag has been placed on Galleria Alberto Sordi, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia per CSD A1.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not meet basic Wikipedia criteria may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as an appropriate article, and if you can indicate why the subject of this article is appropriate, you may contest the tagging. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the article and leave a note on the article's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm its subject's notability under the guidelines.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion. To do this, add {{hangon}} on the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag) and leave a note on the page's talk page explaining your position. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. Hazel77 13:25, 22 October 2007 (UTC)

Dear Robert, the book has descriptions in Latin and German (Gothic), so the OCR program (which converts images of text to editable text) runs into trouble. You have just added links to this in several articles about entomologists. I fail to see the relevance of that link to the articles. This looks to me like spam, and I usually just revert such questionable links and move on. I suggest that you adjust the links to point to a page in the database that makes clear the connection to each entomologist. -- Donald Albury 21:41, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

William Wing

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article William Wing, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice explains why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of the page. Simon Wilkin and John Burrel

Hi, Notafly! Thanks for the message. Unfortunately, being Norfolk rather than Suffolk, places these two gents beyond the scope of most of my ready-to-hand crib sources, and I don't recognise either of them as having been involved in Ipswich Museum affairs, which is where I might have known them from. Are they in Kirby's biography (which I haven't got)? At present the best I can do is put them on a mental list of folk to watch out for and then react when they pop up.... Sorry I can't do much better, but if I can think of whom to ask I will send an inquiry over to Norwich Mus. Best wishes, Eebahgum (talk) 17:50, 2 March 2008 (UTC)

Hi Robert, no real policy against external image links. Just that a lot of additions tend to be personal photography promotion and many by folks who are not careful to identify or note important aspects like location. So usually tend to leave links out unless it really adds value.

I have fine memories of Ireland. The French portal is indeed quite well done. Do you use the French National Library site? [4] It was a wealth of early entomology volumes in pdf for rapid downloading. Kirby, for example, is on tap with the French and not on any UK site. I was also able to get the first copy of the 13th edition of Syst. Nat. ever to reach Brazil (and this is the volume that described many spp. from NW Brazil). I will be doing some Brazilian entomologist bios. Perhaps the links could find a place on your List of Entomologists. Many thanks for your kind message.--Wloveral (talk) 17:40, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Istituto Sperimentale per la Zoologia Agraria

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you recently copied the contents of a page and pasted it into another with a different name. Specifically, you copied the contents of Istituto Sperimentale per la Zoologia Agraria. This is what we call a "cut and paste move", and it is very undesirable because it splits the article's history, which is needed for attribution and is helpful in many other ways. The mechanism we use for renaming an article is to move it to a new name which both preserves the page's history and automatically creates a redirect from the old title to the new. In most cases, you should be able to move an article yourself using the "Move" tab at the top of the page. If there is an article that you cannot move yourself by this process, follow the instructions at Wikipedia:Requested moves to request the move by another. Also, if there are any other articles that you copied and pasted, even if it was a long time ago, please list them at Wikipedia:Cut and paste move repair holding pen. I've fixed this one, though. --Tikiwont (talk) 16:59, 25 May 2008 (UTC)

But right now the alpine zone is overrun by the locals as they hunt for caterpillar gold - Vegetable caterpillar - Cordyceps - A kilogram fetches nearly INR 400,000 - a little below USD 10,000. status and advice

As reviewing administrator, I of course removed the speedy tag. For one thing, he was an Italian Senator, and therefore unquestionably notable. What you now need to do is actually insert the references, and the proper link to the Italian WP. And rewrite sufficiently to make his political career clear. If he published books, list them in proper bibliographic format also. DGG (talk) 19:53, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Hello, Notafly.

I have managed to become embroiled in a discussion about the collation and value of fauna lists (especially the butterfly one) by geographic entity or nation. Logic dictates to me that the default setting would be political nations and other entities. However, that is not always logical in terms of zoogeography. Great Britain and Ireland are a case in point. If we hold fast to the source material, we would have one list of Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland; however, you have established the list of Irish butterflies as a complement to the old list of British butterflies. The latter has now been renamed as "...of Great Britain".

Please, what was your intention with the List of butterflies of Ireland—geographical (i.e. Ireland the island) or political (i.e. Republic of Ireland)?

Many thanks—GRM (talk) 16:08, 1 October 2008 (UTC)

  • Thanks for the feedback, most enlightening. I'll (eventually) fix GB list accordingly (i.e. delete Real's Wood White), so do you chaps handle all fauna on an Island/Ireland-wide basis (which would make my stance against the renaming of the lists totally invalid)?—GRM (talk) 11:23, 2 October 2008 (UTC)

Ok, I've uploaded it to the commons

Irish non-marine mollusca

Hi Robert/Notafly, Hi excellent entomologist person! Invertebrates Rule! Thanks for noticing the List of non-marine molluscs of Ireland. I am still working on that article, it's a little bit in rough shape still. Actually back in 1972 I helped map the non-marine mollusks of a fairly large part of Ireland, I very much enjoyed that visit. To have some actual Irish illustrations would be very nice, but if you just want some photos of the species with the article, there are quite a few pics available already that can be used to illustrate it, that is, if you would like to put them in. It might take me quite a while to get round to doing that. If you are interested, take a look at what Snek used in the article: List of non-marine molluscs of the Czech Republic, plus, any species link on the list that is blue might be worth checking to see if there is a photo you can copy if you want to. In any case, if you have any suggestions or contributions on any aspect of this article, I would be very grateful! Very best to you, Invertzoo (talk) 15:58, 26 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Robert, Today I added lots of images to the Irish list. I hope you like the way it looks. Invertzoo (talk) 21:37, 28 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi again Robert, Glad you like the way the images look in the article. By the way I am not a professional malacologist, more of a keen amateur. Here in NYC, the AMNH malacology section has been shut down for nearly 3 years, so I have no one there to ask about things. So, Major E.R. Sheppard named Pisidium henslowanum in 1823 did he? That is long enough ago to make records a bit sketchy. I see he is not listed in "2,400 years of Malacology" at [6], in that reference there is only one Sheppard listed, a Philip Macdonald Sheppard. Do you think maybe the Royal Academy would have a little info on E.R. Sheppard? Or the FLS? Or the Linnean Society, who published his original descriptions? If I can perhaps manage to get in contact with Michael Kerney in London, I can ask if he knows anything about him. Best wishes to you, Invertzoo (talk) 14:15, 29 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Robert, started the stub, uploaded the two photographs and also added some automatic archival code for this talk page so that it does not get too long. Shyamal (talk) 10:02, 30 October 2008 (UTC)

Hello Notafly. You have chanced to add new information to an article that has been the subject of some past disputes, to the point where it is closely monitored. (The topic is related to Morgellons, which caused a great hoo-ha). WP:MEDRS calls for any medical information to be sourced. If you can locate a published source in a peer-reviewed journal, your info would be welcome there. Thanks, EdJohnston (talk) 17:10, 14 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I added some material on Boris Schwanwitz. Are there any sources in English available? My additions are based on some Russian articles and his textbook in Entomology. Regards, Alexei Kouprianov (talk) 11:34, 15 November 2008 (UTC)

New book in hand

All thanks to this new book I got - Rao, BR Subba (1998) History of entomology in India. Institution of Agricultural Technologists, Bangalore. Not very widely known but an interesting compilation thanks to that author's access to the NHM archives. Found material in it to remove a red link for Harry Christopher Tytler. Interestingly this book completely misses C F C Beeson, a pioneer of forest entomology in India and also seems to have overlooked A D Imms work in India. Shyamal (talk) 08:42, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Also of interest may be a Frank Hannington (?-1919), son of John Child Hannington judge and resident of Madras who lived in Travancore. He collected butterflies from Kumaon and sent collectors into the Chumbi valley when he was postmaster general of Bengal. Is he is the one in Parnassius hannyngtoni ? Shyamal (talk) 09:00, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
Stub created for Hannington. Shyamal (talk) 13:58, 9 December 2008 (UTC)
I just rechecked some other sources - I think he should be correctly spelt Hannyngton- I am adding additional sources. Shyamal (talk) 14:21, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

Found the obituary online and he is the man in that Parnassius ! http://www.archive.org/stream/journalofbombayn26bomb/journalofbombayn26bomb_djvu.txt Here is the full original text - I am mystified by this "great Jepper" bit...

F. HANNYNGTON, I.C.S. Frank Hannyngton was the youngest son of the late Mr. John Child Hannyngton, a Madras Civilian, who for a long time was Judge of Salem and spent the last 15 years of his service as Resident in Travancore. He was well known as " Curly" to the oarsmen of Trinity College, Dublin, where he became Captain of the boats. From Dublin he went to Wren's to prepare for the I. C. S. examination, which he passed in 1897, returning subsequently to Trinity College for his year's probation. At Wren's and in later life he was known as the "Bishop ". Like many Irishmen he was a great Jepper and one of his accomplishments was to kick a top hat held at arm's length over the head. Hannyngton started his service in India on January 30th, 1899, as Asst. Collector and Magistrate, South Arcot. During the early part of his career he served at Tinnevelly, Malabar, Madras and Ootacamund putting in some time as Private Secretary to H. E. the Governor. In 1906 he went into the Postal Department and was successively Postmaster-General of the Punjab, the United Provinces and Bengal. In 1912 he reverted to the Madras Government being put on special duty in Madras and in the same year he was appointed Commissioner of Coorg which post he held up till the end of 1918 when he was transferred to Bellary. In March he went on leave and on his way home died in Bombay early in April 1919. Hannyngton was always deeply interested m Natural History and in 1897, when at Naini Tal, took up butterfly collecting, to which pursuit he devoted most of his spare time. He made a very fine collection of the butterflies of Kumaun regarding which he published a paper in the Journal (XX. p. 131 & 871) : in this he described a new Zephyrus under the name of triloka, which afterwards proved to be a form of Zephyrus syla. Later he published notes on the life history of Vanessa indica and caschmirensis and of Papilio ravana, also notes on the distribution of Lethe kansa and Euthalia patala. While P. M. G. of Bengal, he sent collectors up the Chumbi valley and secured a new Parnassius, which Mr. Avinoff has named hannyngtoni (T. E. S. 1915, p. 351). In Coorg he again made a most complete collection of the local butterflies and published a note on them in the Journal (XXIV. p. 578). Amongst the butterflies he captured in Coorg were a most interesting series of Mycalesis, which have not yet been worked out. Hannyngton's death was a blow to all his friends ; he was " one of the very best." He joined the Society in 1908 and became a member of the Committee in 1913. He had great hopes of succeeding to his father's job of Resident in Travancore and working out the butterflies in that province, which are not as well known as they should be. He married in 1905, Maisie, daughter of Col. Forbes.

Callicore cynosura?

Rather late in wishing you a great 2009. Would you know anyone at the NHM who might have the time or motivation to find an old 2002 calendar that they published commemorating Margaret Bushby Lascelles Cockburn. An pioneering woman naturalist in India, and a biographical note was included in that diary apparently. Shyamal (talk) 12:11, 18 January 2009 (UTC)

Many thanks for this. Here is an unidentified Agrias. Callicore cynosura? Shyamal (talk) 02:55, 25 January 2009 (UTC)

Hi. The article Mycetophilidae was tagged for copyright concerns on January 14th, but though the material in question was added by you, here, you weren't given the requisite notice alerting you to the concerns and advising you how they might be addressed. The suspected source of the material is [7]. Since I don't see an indication of source at the time, I can't positively determine that your material was not taken from that site. Can you please clarify where you found this material so we can determine how best to address these copyright concerns? (You've been around a while, but if you had gotten the requisite notice, it would have pointed you to our copyright policy and Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. I link them in case they will be useful to you.) It may be necessary to revise some of the material to separate it from the source, if it was drawn from that site, and, of course, it would be appropriate to cite them in that case. I will watchlist your page for a time and will see any response you give here. I have also watchlisted the article and will delay processing of this one until you've had a chance to shed some light on the matter. Thanks for any clarification you can provide. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:57, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Thanks. :) Do you have any specifics on when I might check back? The article is past due for processing, but since you were not advised I think it's very reasonable to extend the usual date. As I am not the only administrator who deals with copyright concerns (just, perhaps, currently the major), I would like to make a note at Wikipedia:Copyright problems/Older consolidated alerting any others of the current status of this one. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 16:21, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
Since you haven't given any specifics, are you planning to revise the material or to request permission to use it? --Moonriddengirl (talk) 20:36, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
All right, sounds good. The best thing to do is probably to remove the section until you have a chance to get to it, as the "copyright problem" notice is rather ugly and certainly doesn't add to the article. :/ I'll go ahead and do that and make a note at WP:CP that a revised version should be restored at some point. Thanks. --Moonriddengirl (talk) 20:46, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Re: Eugene Le Moult

We are still trying to undo what this man did to neotropical butterfly taxonomy. By the way, André Freitas just sent me a pdf of a new paper by Lamas with butterfly higher classification, letting the cat out of the bag as to what he, Häuser, de Jong, Nielsen, Pelham, Robbins, Smith, Wahlberg and Vane-Wright are going to propose later on this year. The paper is in quite simple Spanish, and the tables are all Latinate names we know and use every day. WP's email, as I understand it, does not permit attachments. Is there another way I could send this to you? I also have Lamas' bibliography of neotropical butterflies in Word (sure beats re-typing these refs all the time). Hi Robert, seems like taxa assigned to these two names are in a state of confusion. An editor has asked me whether there is a Fuscus Swallowtail and I have no literature to help answer this. Shyamal (talk) 06:32, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

This appears to have been resolved, but not entirely sure if it is correct. Seems like Papilio fuscus andamanicus is now Papilio prexaspes andamanicus. Shyamal (talk) 11:22, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

Hi Robert, trust you had a good summer on the trail of Linnaeus. Did you hear of Ljungh, I only recently came across his name mentioned as the author of a bird subspecies but it seems he made large collections across taxa. Shyamal (talk) 05:19, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on List of Butterflies of Morocco requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a blatant copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. As reviewing administrator I did not delete it, but listed in on the page for possible copyright violations. Though it is true that facts can not be copyrighted-- see [11]. I am not sure of this, There is possibly creativity involved in selecting which species to include. I suggest you ask for help at the Wikipedia:WikiProject Lepidoptera or another biology project--there may be some precedents here for how we handle this.

In any case, if you add information from other sources also--and not follow the order exactly of your source-- there may be fewer problems. Explain yourself in more detail on the talk p. I am not nan expert in this area, & others will judge. . DGG (talk) 16:09, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
