Hello everyone, and welcome to the February 2017 GOCE newsletter. The Guild has been busy since the last time your coordinators sent out a newsletter!

December blitz: This one-week copy-editing blitz ran from 11 through 17 December; the themes were Requests and eliminating the November 2015 backlog. Of the 14 editors who signed up, nine editors completed 29 articles. Barnstars and rollover totals are located here. Thanks to all who took part.

January drive: The January drive was a great success. We set out to remove December 2015 and January and February 2016 from our backlog (195 articles), and by 22 January we had cleared those and had to add a third month (March 2016). At the end of the month we had almost cleared out that last month as well, for a total of 180 old articles removed from the backlog! We reduced our overall backlog by 337 articles, to a low of 1,465 articles, our second-lowest month-end total ever. We also handled all of the remaining requests from December 2016. Officially, 19 editors recorded 337 copy edits (over 679,000 words).

February blitz: The one-week February blitz, focusing on the remaining March 2016 backlog and January 2017 requests, ran from 12 to 18 February. Seven editors reduced the total in those two backlog segments from 32 to 10 articles, leaving us in good shape going in to the March drive.

Coordinator elections for the first half of 2017: In December, coordinators for the first half of 2017 were elected. Jonesey95 stepped aside as lead coordinator, remaining as coordinator and allowing Miniapolis to be the lead, and Tdslk and Corinne returned as coordinators. Thanks to all who participated!

Speaking of coordinators, congratulations to Jonesey95 on their well-deserved induction into the Guild of Copy Editors Hall of Fame. The plaque reads: "For dedicated service as lead coordinator (2014, 1 July – 31 December 2015 and all of 2016) and coordinator (1 January – 30 June 2015 and 1 January – 30 June 2017); exceptional template-creation work (considerably streamlining project administration), and their emphasis on keeping the GOCE a drama-free zone."

Housekeeping note: We do not send a newsletter before every drive or blitz. To have a better chance of knowing when the next event will start, add the GOCE's message box to your watchlist.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators: Miniapolis, Jonesey95, Corinne and Tdslk.

To discontinue receiving GOCE newsletters, please remove your name from our mailing list.

Gurbaksh Chahal[edit]

Can you help me with the Gurbaksh Chahal article? I would like to revert it to the edition prior to's contributions. It's clear to me he's a shill. Chisme (talk) 00:20, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

Until this IP can be made to see sense, I'm not getting dragged into a possible edit war with them (I noticed he has just reverted your attempt to revert). I'm not sure if it has reached the stage where it needs to be reported to ANI, but maybe that is something worth considering. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 00:25, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
Of course, he's never going to see sense, right? I don't know how to report to ANI. I hate being dragged into these edit wars too. Chisme (talk) 00:27, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
There is an ANI here: Gurbaksh Chahal in case you want to comment. Chisme (talk) 01:14, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
I've commented, both on the original case and on Jkmarold55 and his ludicrous insinuations. To paraphrase it though, I'm very much on your side, and I'm glad to see that the IP has been blocked. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 08:04, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for your help! Chisme (talk) 10:16, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────No worries. I'm in the process of taking a look and seeing if there is any evidence to submit a report to SPI about both the two IPs and Jkmarold55. Theres a lot of quacking going on... --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 10:29, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

Thanks yet again, Skamecrazy. I reported some of this at EL C's page. He's an admin (I think). You can read it here. I think (talk · contribs) and Jui89 (talk · contribs) are also involved in this quack-fest. Chisme (talk) 10:35, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
I'll take a look at that as well then. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 10:39, 5 April 2017 (UTC)
I have started the SPI investigation claim here([[1]]). So far I have only added the two IPs that have turned up on the page (as its easier for me to provide evidence), but I can add the other two if needs be. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 11:02, 5 April 2017 (UTC)

What a fiasco that was! Thanks for standing up to those people. I think in the long run the Gurbaksh Chahal article will require a "This page is currently semi-protected so that only established registered users can edit it" tag. When the Chahal article is reopened for editing on April 10, I intend to go to work on it. I will streamline the "Controversy" section, as I promised on the Talk page, and make some other changes. I hope the whole mess doesn't start all over again. Chisme (talk) 16:38, 8 April 2017 (UTC)

Semi protection may well be the way forward if things continue like they did. All I can do is monitor the situation and hope things ease off once the protection is lifted (and call me a pessimist, but I have a feeling things won't ease off at all). Regardless, I am happy to help, and if there is anything I can do to continue helping, please let me know :) --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 17:03, 8 April 2017 (UTC)

I wrote my proposed draft of the Gurbaksh Chahal article. Please have a look at it. I found out that user Lingveno was paid $200 dollars by Chahal's sister Kamal Kaur to edit the Chahal article. I reported it on the Jkmarold sockpuppet investigation. I think I deserve at least $150 of Lingveno's payment ;). I did most of the heavy lifting. Chisme (talk) 00:13, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

I have my reservations about paid editing. Mainly (as you suggested earlier) their ability to maintain a neutral POV. I was always told that, if you had a conflict of interest with a certain topic, you should avoid editing that topic. I don't see how that's any different with paid editing. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 15:43, 10 April 2017 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted[edit]

Wikipedia New page reviewer.svg

Hello Skamecrazy123. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog (around 18,000 pages) down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. Swarm 15:32, 18 April 2017 (UTC)

statistics of member-states or statistics of EU?[edit]

Hiya, I noticed you are in the UK; why don`t you elect to put an EU flag icon above your Union Jack? At the end of the day, we are all statistics. The article on India`s foreign-relations is a case-in-point, as one may see from comparison of the statistics per nation-state as opposed to EU statistics, my edit was not at all vandalistic. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 22:07, 24 April 2017 (UTC)

You said you would provide references. I'm not seeing any. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 05:30, 25 April 2017 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors Request[edit]

Hi there! You claimed Power Rangers (film) on the Guild of Copy Editors' Requests page, but you have not worked on it. Should it be made available for other editors to work on? Thanks for letting us know. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:13, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

@Jonesey95: Sure. I though I'd taken it off myself. Must have been a glitch somewhere along the line. Cheers. --Skamecrazy123 (talk) 16:02, 12 May 2017 (UTC)

New Page Review - Newsletter No.4[edit]

Hello Skamecrazy123,
Wikipedia New page reviewer.svg

Since rolling out the right in November, just 6 months ago, we now have 412 reviewers, but the backlog is still mysteriously growing fast. If every reviewer did just 55 reviews, the 22,000 backlog would be gone, in a flash, schwoop, just like that!

But do remember: Rather than speed, quality and depth of patrolling and the use of correct CSD criteria are essential to good reviewing. Do not over-tag. Make use of the message feature to let the creator know about your maintenance tags. See the tutorial again HERE. Get help HERE.

Stay up to date with recent new page developments and have your say, read THIS PAGE.
