Counter-vandalism questions
Hi! I have some questions:
- How can you tell the difference between good faith edits and the addition of plausible misinformation (sneaky vandalism)? After all, it will look plausible, so it's not going to be obvious.
- How can human counter-vandals specifically help, as ClueBot seems to do most of the work?

Please comment on an RfC about Living members of deposed royal families and the titles attributed to them on WP
Hello - I have opened an RfC about suggested guidelines in the Manual of Style for articles about living members of families whose ancestors were deposed as monarchs of various countries and the titles and "styles" attributed to these living people, at the moment often in a misleading and inaccurate way in my opinion. Please join in the discussion at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Biographies "Use of royal "Titles and styles" and honorific prefixes in articles and templates referring to pretenders to abolished royal titles and their families"[1]Regards,Smeat75 (talk) 05:56, 27 November 2013 (UTC)

Re:RfA
Hi Vertium, I saw your comments at WT:RfA. Thanks for the awesome thought. I was morosed when I saw such a good candidate failed. I think your proposal is perfect. But as I said somewhere, people just overlook the broken process, not now but from years. Though people know that we should fix the process but when someone gives a proposal to fix the process, community has two words to say, "Good joke!". A new proposal is a kind of joke for them. Actually I started hating the process. When I joined, I dreamt of becoming an admin like Dennis, Kudpung etc. But now, the dream became a nightmare. That article is an enormous mess. That new editor (check out their edits to the lead) is seriously POV, but the article already was a mess--the legal chatter I removed predates that new editor. It needs a source check, tags for POV and COI editing, and probably half of it needs to be trimmed and the other half rewritten. Happy days, 66.168.160.62 (talk) 02:21, 31 July 2014 (UTC)
- At first I thought you were blanking, which is why I self-reverted. I'll have a look at the new stuff as well, but would strongly encourage you to establish a login and edit with your username. IP edits are just big red flags when we see huge amounts of data being cut out. Thanks!
- Which is why God invented the edit summary; He also urges editors to judge edits for content. :) 66.168.160.62 (talk) 18:12, 31 July 2014 (UTC)

In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; I restored the removed content. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks! Hi! The information appeared duplicated on my browser after multiple refreshes, but the current page looks okay. I guess it was a technical issue. Sorry for the inconvenience. I don't edit wiki often, so please let me know if I'm in error. Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.198.228.131 (talk) 02:14, 7 August 2014 (UTC)

Reverted Edit
Greetings and salutations. You reverted an edit by this IP on the Rooster Teeth article (diff here) that had been recognized as vandalism. Though I am not disputing that it was, I would like to inform you that this is a shared IP address hosted by Salisbury East High School in Adelaide, South Australia, and taking further disciplinary action against users of this IP could, and in all likelihood would, have overarching negative implications on those students that use Wikipedia with good intentions. I thank you for your tireless work to improve Wikipedia and hope you take this information to heart. 59.167.93.171 (talk) 02:13, 21 August 2014 (UTC)

Hi Vertium, I tried to follow your suggestions. Proposal: To complete the update, and if it is possible, can you upload the logo and screenshot as Wikipedia:Files for upload/January 2015#Software_product_logo_Shark_3D and Wikipedia:Files for upload/January 2015#Software_product_screenshot_Shark_3D? 217.95.50.223 (talk) 12:01, 28 August 2014 (UTC)

Discussion on Sharabha
Sharabha, an article that you or your project may be interested in, has been nominated for an individual good article reassessment. If you are interested in the discussion, please participate by adding your comments to the reassessment page. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, the good article status may be removed from the article.
I gathered this link, but couldn't figure out how to use it.I'd like to inform you that before I made changes in the "Sharabha" page, there were passages like (and I am quoting verbatim) "mutilation of Vishnu" among others which are very offensive to an average Hindu reader. The sheer detailing of the incident was obviously by someone/some people from a specific sect(shaivate) or someone with no regards for Hindu deities and customs.Lord Vishnu is the supreme being in Hinduism and being of Vaishnava view,I found the article in extremely poor taste.Even as per broad Hindu view, this article had an extremely hideous description of two very venerated deities confronting one another.so i have edited the page with a more peaceful accord, removing images and passages which were contentious.I would hereby like to appeal for abrogation of all such non-harmonious sections of this page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.194.225.178 (talk) 04:52, 2 September 2014 (UTC)

Inquiring about the Counter Vandalism Unit
Hi there! I'm interested in joining the Counter Vandalism Unit. What exactly is the training program? How are the students taught? Writing Enthusiast (talk) 03:12, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- Hi Writing Enthusiast!
- Fighting vandalism is a never-ending task here on Wikipedia, and I appreciate your interest in participating in that effort! You can have a look over the program by visiting Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit/Academy, and as you'll see the key is to connect with one of the mentors there. You can find a list of those as well as the syllabus for what's expected.
- The training itself involves a variety of activities, including becoming very familiar with the relevant WP policies and demonstrating that you can differentiate between good faith edits and vandalism. You should work with your mentor to review the policies, examine some historical edits to identify and rationalize their type and have your edits reviewed as part of your "graduation".
- In looking at your user page, I can tell you have experience in editing a wiki, but only a few hundred edits on WP itself. While the technical know-how for editing a wiki will come in handy, the most important part is ensuring you have a good handle on the policies. When you fight vandalism effectively, you'll build up your edit count significantly and show the admin overlords that you can be trusted with rollback privileges, which makes some of the anti-vandalism tools (e.g. Stiki available to you. Completing the anti-vandalism curriculum helps build their confidence in your abilities as well.
- Feel free to let me know if you have any other questions or if I can help. Thanks again for your interest. Vertium When all is said and done 13:19, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- I just finished reading the academy page. How long does this program last? Are there "lessons", or just is it just editing experience? Writing Enthusiast (talk) 15:59, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- It's a bit of both. If I were working with you on it, I have a variety of historical edits that I present to you and have you review (in diff format) and give me your assessment of whether the reversion done was for a good faith edit (some of which are fine and some of which violate some policy) or vandalism Additionally, there's a period of time where you'll make reversions (which you may already be doing) and I'd review them and offer commentary or feedback. The duration depends entirely on the schedule you set with your mentor and the availability each of you has to work on this with each other (as you can imagine, some people have several hours a day they can spend on WP, others hit it as they can). It's much more about the accuracy of the edits than either the number or speed of them. Hope that helps! (I'll presume you're watching my talk page for now, so will not put the Talkback template on your talk page again). Vertium When all is said and done 16:18, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, I'm watching your page. I'm interested in this. I do plan to be a long-term editor here. I've been using Lupin lately, so I have a little reversion experience. Writing Enthusiast (talk) 16:36, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- Okay, if you want me to help, list yourself as a "current student" next to my name in the Instructor area of CVU and start familiarizing yourself with the key pillar documents for Wiki that you might not yet have read. If you need a list, let me know. Over the weekend, I'll start looking at some of your revert edits. (If I've been too presumptive and you'd rather work with someone else, that's fine too. Just let me know.). Vertium When all is said and done 18:41, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- Can I have a list of those documents that you mentioned? I'll add myself soon. Writing Enthusiast (talk) 21:37, 6 September 2014 (UTC)
- Best place to start is WP:Vandalism. There will be a bunch of links, and the essays at the end are helpful as well, particularly about IPs. I'll start sending things for you to review later today. BTW, I'm in the eastern US timezone, so am typically more active in the early morning and evening hours. Vertium When all is said and done 13:02, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Cornell?
I'm new to Wikipedia, and obviously a proud Cornellian. What did I do wrong with my edits of the Cornell musical activities? Please advise.
Missathena (talk) 18:18, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
- Hi and welcome to Wikipedia. Being a Cornellian is certainly a very valid source of pride, and the content you added would probably be quite informative to any reader of the article. It would be better entered if you could cite a reliable source for the information. This could be an article from a newspaper or though not truly independent, even a website from the college would be better than just no citation at all. It's particularly important since you added text into the middle of a paragraph that had a citation and that citation doesn't support the information you added. If you can find a source to cite, your content would be very welcome. If you need help in adding the reference, let me know and I'll be happy to help. Vertium When all is said and done 23:58, 12 September 2014 (UTC)
- When I began I read about references, and though I could use the Cornellian yearbook and the Cornell website those may not be allowed as not being third party, and so not "reliable." Can you help. Then I can get an idea of what is "allowed." I think my additions are as you said worthwhile. I also want to add bios about some important Cornell grads I knew from musical activities not currently in the encyclopedia. Thanks for your help.
Missathena (talk) 15:11, 13 September 2014 (UTC)
- Sure, I did some web searches and found an article in the Ithaca Times that supported the fact of the symphony and there's a Wikipedia article on the Cornell Glee Club (which has subsections on both The Sherwoods and Cayuga Waiters, so I linked those references to that article. I used the University's website to support a few of the others. As I mentioned, they're not the best references, but they do support it and should be sufficient for this content.
- When adding alumni, it will best if they already have an article about them on Wikipedia - as that will presume notability. If they don't, please refer to WP:GNG to ensure that they pass the notability guidelines before adding them. If they are notable and don't have a wiki page on them, please consider creating an article about them. Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help. Not sure what's going on
I received a message that you had reverted my edit which in turn was removing vandalism. It seems another editor's addition got caught in the middle; however, of the four genres listed, neither seemed to have a citation, so rather than removing all four, I let the insertion prevail. So I'm not sure that either one of us has done the right thing here. Thoughts? Samsara (FA • FP) 00:46, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
- Yeah, there were two other edits, one that created an illegal move and one that reverted that plus yours that was adding the shoegazing addition. I'm not a music expert by any stretch, but the article doesn't mention this style of music at all, so I would suggest some reliable source to evidence that music style. If you want to put it in, I won't revert again. Thanks. Vertium When all is said and done 00:51, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
- I have no expertise either, and like I said, the insertion didn't come from me, it came from an earlier edit that was omitted in the revert, but that's probably cleared up now. It was just that when I text-searched the article, none of those genres are actually mentioned in the main text, so as far as this naive reader is concerned, it's all equally unreliable, and it looks to me like the removal relied on the "expertise" of a vandal, so maybe not the best lead to follow. Cheers, Samsara (FA • FP) 01:14, 15 September 2014 (UTC)

Question About Non-Cited Material Reply
Is it safe to revert any non-cited information additions? I've sort of been avoiding those, since I'm not too sure about them. --Writing Enthusiast ☎ 19:11, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
- Use your judgement. If it's BLP, it's imperative to remove uncited material. If the information is referenced elsewhere in the article, it's okay that it remains in the article. If it's not cited in the article, but easily referenced (e.g. a sports team's current record or other current events), it's best if you can add the reference. Hope that helps. With reference to https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Larry_Ellison&oldid=626158540&diff=prev I believe my edits are correct, as he did step down as CEO, as unanimously confirmed by every major media source.

Applying for Rollback
Hi again!
I have 400 mainspace edits already, so I'm going to apply for the Rollback right soon. Thanks for your help in CVUA. :) --Writing Enthusiast ☎ 01:11, 22 September 2014 (UTC)
- Great! Glad to see you so active in fighting vandalism. You're able to apply though my advice would be to continue plugging away for a little while longer. Some admins look suspiciously at those who apply right after hitting the minimum. For some reason they don't like eager people... not sure why. In any case, they'll look through your edit history, so make sure you're not getting re-reverted or challenged too much before you apply. Good luck with it, and thanks again for the work you're doing here! Vertium When all is said and done 13:03, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

- Follow up: I'm unable to install STiki, because I don't have Java Runtime on my computer. I've tried out Igloo, but I found it rather confusing. - Just one last question: do you have any advice on becoming a reviewer (recommended edit count, experience level, etc.)? --Writing Enthusiast ☎ 00:05, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
- There was some specific criteria during the pilot, which is spelled out at WP:RVW and which remains in effect today. There's no specific number of edits that have to be made, but as you'll see the desire is that you have a "track record" of making edits. Vertium When all is said and done 00:53, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
- I've read the required readings and instructions, but I might wait until I have 500+ namespace edits before applying. --Writing Enthusiast ☎ 01:46, 23 September 2014 (UTC)
- Probably a good idea anyway, so it doesn't look like you're just collecting privileges. BTW, I looked through a bunch of your updates today and the ones I checked were all reverted correctly, and well documented on the user's talk page. Well done! Please respect the consensus that was set by the RFC at the article for Michelle Thomas. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) (talk) 22:02, 2 October 2014 (UTC)
The consensus is that there is no reliable source for the date of birth. If you evidence of the date of birth, please bring it forward. Your original point for the RFC was that you wanted a "circa" date of birth since it couldn't be proved when she was born. I bellieve that has been accomplished. I fixed a broken link. The link to the Daily Show video was massively outdated.

A change is requested on Mrs. Piper page
Hi Vertium, My name is Ehsan and you undid my changes a couple of times. I see that referring to those references is not accurate and it just reflects one side of the story in a biased way. I referred to a another reference to reflect the ideas of the other side but you erased that. I am not sure if I am sending this message to you in the correct page, so I am not sure if you will see it or not. Just for the example, the ideas of a recreational mathematician has been reflected (he is not even expert in psi phenomenon) but when I add the clear statement of Society of Psychic Research, you eliminated that. Even, if it seems unusual, we should reflect the ideas of both side, specially the people who has investigated the case (Society of Psychic Research). Let me know if I am wrong. 74.195.244.87 (talk) 15:25, 9 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello, Let me clarify a couple of things... first, when you're writing to someone about a page or an edit, it's really helpful to actually tell me the page to which you're referring. There is no page entitled "Mrs. Piper", so I presume you're referring to the Leonora Piper article. Next, I have reverted only one edit there, and it was the insertion of the word "recreational" in front of the word "mathematician". Your edit had no citation indicating how or why someone might be a "recreational mathematician" (which I'm not even sure what that means) or that Lenora Piper was one. Also, you did not provide an an edit summary indicating why you had added this change in the article. Absent those two things, and another editor's previous removal of the same change, I found your addition to be unsupported and reverted it. If you have evidence that she was indeed a "recreational mathematician", then you should provide it as a reference. You might also consider expanding the article to explain what a recreational mathematician is, and why it's important to the article on Leonora Piper. Thanks. Vertium When all is said and done 13:31, 11 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hi, I studied carefully the page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonora_Piper#cite_note-47. However, I found that the whole article has focused on failures of this medium's and there is not reference to other investigators who has found evidential facts supporting this medium's work. I just want the article to be unbiased and report both sides of the coins not only view point of one set of skeptics. I have revised just a small part of it but every time I found you reverted it back. Please check out the new changes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.195.244.87 (talk) 13:46, 14 October 2014 (UTC)
- Hello again. I have made exactly one edit to this page. I don't know you're fully familiar with reading a page history, but I haven't reverted anything "every time". Please become familiar with:
- 1) how to read a page's history.
- 2) how to cite a change you are making. If a page has errors, you should correct them, but you have to have references for the changes. You can't simply change it because you believe it to be inaccurate.
- 3) how to put a comment in the section where it belongs. Please don't just put your comments about this article at the bottom of my talk page. There is a section for this discussion, so you should add to it instead of starting another section or putting your text in a different section altogether.

- If you are going to be making ongoing edits to the wikipedia, please consider establishing a user account and I encourage you to spend some time learning how to determine notability of a topic or person, provide reliable sources and insert references correctly. If you focus on the guidelines and rules of the encyclopedia, fewer of your edits will get reverted. As a side note, I have no interest in this article at all. I reverted one unsupported update you made and that's all I've done to it.

Updating CVUA Pages
Hi Vertium,
I'm (or used to be, that is) WritingEnthusiast14. I recently had myself renamed to "Biblioworm", so I'm planning on updating my name under your graduates list and moving my previous instruction page to reflect my new username. I just wanted to ask you if you're fine with that, seeing that my instruction page is under your userspace. Thanks, --Biblioworm (talk | contribs) 03:31, 19 October 2014 (UTC)
Hey, I'll handle moving the instruction page, but feel free to update the CVUA info. Hope things are going well! Vertium When all is said and done 16:40, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
- Thanks. I guessed that you would probably want to handle the page move, but I've already updated the CVUA page. By the way, I'm thinking about becoming a CVUA trainer sometime in the near future. Do you think I have enough experience as is, or should I wait a little while? (I'll also have to put together my curriculum, so that will probably take some time.) Thanks, --Biblioworm 19:54, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
- Biblioworm, if you enjoy training and mentoring, CVUA is a great service, and with your edit count, I think you clearly qualify. The only question I'd ask is how many of your vandalism reversions get argued with or corrected by others. Even with as many as I've done, I still occasionally will get someone pointing out a bad revert. If nearly all of yours are standing on their own, that's a good indicator that you're at a level of competency that would serve you well in training others. I can't remember how many I had when I inserted myself as a trainer, but training is what I do for a living, so building the curriculum and the rubric was pretty much second nature to me. Nowadays, I don't think that CVUA gets a ton of activity, but as you saw for yourself, if someone is interested in it, they'll reach out. I'm backing away from the academy a bit, because there's one admin in particular who sometimes acts as if the CVUA is his personal domain and he can get pretty bossy about how it's "run". I think that sometimes, people forget that this is an all-volunteer effort. If you are interested, though, I'd recommend it as I've always found those I've helped train in CVUA to be great people to work with. Best of luck to you! Vertium When all is said and done 02:35, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
- From what I recall, most of my reverts have not been questioned. (Legitimately, that is. I'm not counting the angry messages I sometimes get from obvious vandals.) Unfortunately, training is not what I do for a living, so curriculum building might not come as naturally for me. Nonetheless, I get working on writing it shortly.

- I know who the admin you're talking about is. Of course, Wikipedians assume good faith, so I'm sure that he has good intentions. I'm not extremely concerned about that, but what I am concerned about is people who think that you have to be here for at least a year to be fit to mentor others, so I'm not sure how well adding myself to the trainers list will go over with those sort of people... --Biblioworm 03:15, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, I always assume good faith until such assumptions are quashed by people's behavior. If the duration of your tenure is a concern, continue on your current course and give it a few more months and then proceed. Hope you're having fun!! Vertium When all is said and done 03:21, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
- I'm not personally concerned about my experience, because I'm confident that I have enough to become a trainer, so I'm not really going to let that stop me. I'm just saying that it might be a bit difficult to convince some others of that. --Biblioworm 03:33, 24 October 2014 (UTC)
