WikiProject Media franchises

Dear WikiProject Games participants...WikiProject Media franchises needs some help from other projects which are similar. Media franchises' scope deals primarily with the coordination of articles within the hundreds if not thousands of media franchises which exist. Sometimes a franchise might just need color coordination of the various templates used; it could mean creating an article for the franchise as a jump off point for the children of it; or the creation of a new templating system for media franchise articles. The project primarily focuses on multimedia franchises. It would be great if some of this project's participants would come over and help the project get back on solid footing. Also, if you know of similar projects which have not received this, let Lady Aleena (talk · contribs) know. Please come and take a look at the project and see if you wish to lend a hand. You can sign up here if you wish. Thank you. LA @ 21:22, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Franchise naming convention discussion at WikiProject Media franchises

Dear WikiProject Games participants...WikiProject Media franchises is currently discussing a naming convention for franchise articles. Since this may affect one or more articles in your project, we would like to get the opinions of all related projects before implimenting any sweeping changes. Please come and help us decide. Thanks! Milestone Announcements

Announcements
 • All WikiProjects are invited to have their "milestone-reached" announcements automatically placed onto Wikipedia's announcements page.
 • Milestones could include the number of FAs, GAs or articles covered by the project.
 • No work need be done by the project themselves; they just need to provide some details when they sign up. A bot will do all of the hard work.

I thought this WikiProject might be interested. Ping me with any specific queries or leave them on the page linked to above. Thanks! - Jarry1250 (t, c) 21:52, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:29, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Dungeons & Dragons featured portal candidate

Hi! The Dungeons & Dragons portal is currently a featured portal candidate here. Since D&D is a game, I was wondering if the members of this project could take a look and comment on the nomination. Thanks! –Drilnoth (T • C • L) 14:55, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Request for comment on Biographies of living people

Hello Wikiproject! Currently there is a discussion which will decide whether wikipedia will delete 49,000 articles about a living person without references, here:

Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people

Since biographies of living people covers so many topics, nearly all wikiproject topics will be effected.

The two opposing positions which have the most support is:

 1. supports the deletion of unreferenced articles about a living person, User:Jehochman
 2. opposes the deletion of unreferenced articles about a living person, except in limited circumstances, User:Collect

Comments are welcome. Keep in mind that by default, editor's comments are hidden. Simply press edit next to the section to add your comment.

Please keep in mind that at this point, it seems that editors support deleting unreferenced article if they are not sourced, so your project may want to pursue the projects below.

Re-activation banner goofs

 • The word "descendant" in the re-activation banner has been misspelled as "decendant." I hate to be a grammar nazi, but poor spelling can really detract from an otherwise good page (I assume the banner is a template, of which I have no experience in editing).

There's a long discussion on the talk page there to rename the article, because it covers only video games. Editors who work in that industry are opposed. Pcap ping 00:23, 14 May 2010 (UTC)

Games articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Games articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Do we need a puzzles task force?

I just looked at the article on crosswords, and looked at its talk page to see whether it would be under the auspices of a wikiproject on puzzles. There did not appear to be one - instead, the article is kept watched by this wikiproject. If puzzles get watched here, I wonder whether we need a "puzzles" task force? This could achieve goals such as de-orphaning articles (I am currently trying to de-orphan the article on arrowords). ACEOREVIVED (talk) 20:40, 10 March 2011 (UTC)

I noticed that there was a gap in the puzzle section it could be regarded as tabletop game and hence be BTGProject tagged. There is basically room for a Mind Sports Project.Tetron76 (talk) 14:41, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Biography requirements

I was wanting to build a set of guidelines for what should count as a notable games player. There is I feel the need for a guidance similar to that given to quite obscure sports. There is a discrepancy between children projects in terms of consistency but it is the case such as where someone is claiming that the first scrabble world champion is only famous for one event that could be addressed. I am aiming to put the main conversation on BTG Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Board_and_table_games.Tetron76 (talk) 14:41, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Interactive tutorial help

Hi, I'm working on a project for an interactive tutorial for new editors and we're trying to mock-up the first units/levels (http://enwp.org/User:Ocaasi/The_Wikipedia_Game). I need a few good images of the Wikipedia interface, and some dialogue boxes and basic interface shots for the alpha version which will be done in Adobe Flash. Does anyone have basic photoshop skills and a few hours? Any help would be much appreciated. User:Ocaasi c 00:34, 3 June 2011 (UTC)

There is an AfD here for the outdoor water game Dibble Dabble. Perhaps this Games project is primarily aimed at indoor/board games, but additional help would be useful to decide what to do, so if anyone can contribute it would be appreciated. Thanks. --Noleander (talk) 23:27, 1 July 2011 (UTC)

Collaboration of the Month for December 2011: Pachinko

The article Pachinko badly needs work, especially sourcing. Since it is based on the ja.wiki version of the article, and most of the sources will be in Japanese, it could obviously use some help from someone who knows the language. Basically, the article has a lot of information, but virtually none of it is sourced. It has some suspect "information" in it (I removed most of the blatant WP:NOR and WP:NOT#HOWTO violations), and it is also missing historical information prior to around 1920. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 09:30, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

A question on naming game articles

I was tidying up an article on the game Clock Tower 2, having checked an ip whose edits were a bit erratic, when I realised I was adding information on the wrong game.

Apparently there are four games in the series: Clock Tower, the Clock Tower 2 I was working on, Clock Tower Ghost Head and Clock Tower 3. The problem was that the first game was seemingly not released outside of Japan, and so the Japanese Clock Tower 2 was released internationally as Clock Tower, and later Ghost Head was (internationally) called Clock Tower 2 (see IGN and GameSpot). I don't know if policy is to be canonically correct (and stick with Japanese, and therefore original names), but to me it makes more sense to have the game released in English-speaking countries on articles at their English-speaking title, that is, the article on page Clock Tower 2 would start:

Clock Tower 2 (released in Japan as Clock Tower Ghost Head)....

instead of (as is currently the case) being an article on a game that is known in English as just Clock Tower. I'm not sure what page the first game would be moved to (Clock Tower (Japanese video game) perhaps?). As I say, I'm unfamiliar with naming policy for situations like this, and Clock Tower II (not '2') does redirect to the Ghost Head article, so I thought I'd give the project a heads up to get some advice! Thanks BulbaThor (talk) 16:25, 1 January 2012 (UTC)

More of a WT:VG and WT:DAB question, but what I would do is:
 • Create Clock Tower franchise as a WP:SUMMARY style article, using Main to link to each of the actual game articles, and explain the situation.
 • Make Clock Tower (video game) a disambiguation page that really-really summarizes it, in one-liners
 • Put the first, Jpn-only, game at Clock Tower (Japanese video game), with a lead starting with something like "Clock Tower is the first domestic Japanese release (never released internationally) in the "Clock Tower" video game franchise...", and maybe include a hatnote:
 • Use Clock Tower II for #2, with a lead starting like "Clock Tower II (released outside Japan as simply Clock Tower) is the second (first international) release...", and maybe include a hatnote:
 • Put the technically third game at Clock Tower Ghost Head, with lead starting "Clock Tower Ghost Head (released outside Japan as simply Clock Tower 2) is the third (second international) release...", with maybe a hatnote:
 • Put the really 4th game at Clock Tower 3, with lead starting "Clock Tower 3 is actually the fourth (third international) release...", with maybe a hatnote: the actual 3rd game in the series.
 • And then go have a big drink and a nap.
I think you have come across a record-setting example of a snarly disambiguation case. Certainly the worst I've ever seen personally. The reason I would do it this way is that there is a triple disambiguation problem here, entirely numerical and stepwise, so minor concerns like favoring US/Eur. names have to take a back seat to the issue making any sense at all to anyone. We basically must start with the Japanese titles, because there's no escaping the facts that game #1 in the series was Jpn.-only, and the second one was called "II"; and the games were very confusingly renamed for secondary markets, in a cascading pattern of idiocy. We have to stick with the Jpn. titles having primacy just for consistency - it would drive people insane if we switched in the middle. If the Jpn. names were some something totally different and not conflicting, or actually in Japanese, or in impenetrable Engrish, I'd say go for the Western names per WP:COMMONNAME, but that guideline is basically trumped by most other concerns. Simply being able to make sense of what order these games go in and what their names are in what market is a doozy. — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 15:16, 2 January 2012 (UTC)
Since this is English-language Wikipedia, the article names should be those used in the English-speaking world: Clock Tower (video game), Clock Tower II and Clock Tower III; and there should be an additional article for the Japan-only game with a disambiguating qualifier: Clock Tower (Japanese video game) (does it even need its own article - is it notable enough in the English-speaking world?). Obviously each article should explain its different Japanese name. I think SMcCandlish's solution is over-complicated. Bazonka (talk) 07:37, 3 January 2012 (UTC)
I agree with Bazonka, though with a minor change of titles to Clock Tower 2 and Clock Tower 3 rather than II and III. Hatnotes will be very useful, for example Clock Tower 2 can begin For the game released in Japan as Clock Tower 2, see Clock Tower (video game). We already have Clock Tower (series) as the summary article, and Clock Tower series helps with navigation. To spell out the changes:
Certes (talk) 16:17, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Whoa! This is really an amazingly difficult disambiguation job! Great work, and keep up the good work!Chrisrus (talk) 19:17, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

On further investigation, I can't find any source that calls the third game exactly Clock Tower 2. Packaging shows the title as Clock Tower Ghost Head (plus Japanese text)[1] or as Clock Tower II: The Struggle Within[2]. Those titles are currently the article name and a redirect to it, so there's no reason to change that. Clock Tower 2 could redirect to the first or second game, but in view of the complexity I suggest a short new dab page pointing to both. Certes (talk) 23:36, 3 January 2012 (UTC)

Are there any objections to the changes above or is it time to be bold? Is there an admin watching who will be able to delete the two unwanted redirects (and their equivalents in Talk:) which the moves will create, or do we need a move-multi as described here? Meanwhile I've created User:Certes/Clock Tower 2 as a dab to replace Clock Tower 2. Certes (talk) 19:06, 4 January 2012 (UTC)

That sounds like a good plan, modulo the fact that the real name of the game is never "Clocktower 2". :-) — SMcCandlish Talk⇒ ʕ(Õلō Contribs. 01:36, 5 January 2012 (UTC)
Move-multi proposed at Talk:Clock Tower (video game)#Requested move. Certes (talk) 20:20, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Articles for the first two games were moved as described in Talk:Clock Tower (1995 video game)#Requested move. The current situation is described in Clock Tower (series)#Games. I am looking at incoming links, especially the redirects, but it will be difficult to handle them all ideally without adding dab pages. Help from anyone who knows the topic better would be welcome. Certes (talk) 19:29, 15 January 2012 (UTC)

I think that's all the redirects and incoming links fixed. I've added hatnotes to the first three games and had my dab page speedily deleted. Can someone please do a few checks? In particular, I'm uncomfortable about Clock Tower 2 and Clock Tower II having different targets, and I'm not sure what to do with the link in Pyramid_Head#Reception_and_legacy.
