Facebook Group for Georgia Wikipedians

[edit]

There are at least 2 different Facebook groups for Georgia Wikipedians, if you are interested. The statewide Georgia (USA) Wikipedians and the Georgia Piedmont Wikimedians (also known as Wikimedia Atlanta). Feel free to meet us there. --TadgStirkland401 (TadgTalk) 06:01, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I'm in (if approved). Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 06:11, 23 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Bubba73: Thanks for joining along with a few others. I hope even more join in the coming weeks. Would be awesome to have an organized Wikipedia Users Group for Georgia. --TadgStirkland401 (TadgTalk) 01:17, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Georgia State Capitol

[edit]

There are some comments in Georgia State Capitol#Monuments on the Capitol grounds that, while they are true, they don't seem to be appropriate in the article about the state capitol. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 18:02, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Bubba73: Shouldn't this discussion take place on that article's talk page? I agree, the comments don't seem to fit. But I think you'd get more concensus or discussion over there on that page. — TadgStirkland401 (TadgTalk) 18:18, 9 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to get into an argument over there. I've already been upset by how "selective" the monuments that were added initially were. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 02:23, 10 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I can't deal with that editor. First he put on List of Confederate monuments and memorials that a portrait of a governor that wasn't in the capitol was a monument to the Confederacy! I tried to reason with him that something that doesn't exist isn't a monument, to no avail. It might still be in that article - I don't know because I stopped watching it. I said that the stuff about what portraits are in the Capitol should be in its article, so I put it there. Then he added a section about monuments on the grounds, but his list was very selective. I tried to make it into a complete list. Then he made the recent additions that have nothing to do with the Capitol. I can't deal with it. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 16:45, 10 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Resolved

Well I took it on and cleaned it up. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 02:50, 21 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

RfC on election/referendum naming format

[edit]

An RfC on moving the year from the end to the start of article titles (e.g. South African general election, 2019 to 2019 South African general election) has been reopened for further comment, including on whether a bot could be used move the articles if it closed in favour of the change: Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (government and legislation)#Proposed change to election/referendum naming format. Wrong Georgia flag in some articles.

[edit]

While fixing portal links earlier today, I noticed a number of articles on Georgia using the flag of the country of Georgia instead of the state. I fixed the instances that I saw, but some kind of check should be done to confirm that the flag of the country is not being used where the state flag should be. Cheers! bd2412 T 03:12, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not too surprising, the template for those are confusing. I wonder if there's a tool we can use to check how many pages use the Georgia (country) flag template and go through them to make sure it's not being used incorrectly. Any ideas? SEMMENDINGER (talk) 03:23, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I tried doing an internal search, but found nothing of use. It may be possible to grab the list of file links from Commons. bd2412 T 05:01, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nice idea, this would be a pretty big project. Wonder if there is a tool out there that can pull the pages that use that file and have a talk page with our wikiproject on it. Sounds pretty convoluted when I type it out, but who knows. SEMMENDINGER (talk) 15:38, 26 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

South Georgia task force

[edit]

Is the continued existence of the South Georgia task force useful for this project? The task force has been marked inactive for 6 years and there has been no talk page activity for 4.5 years (and no actual discussion for 7.5 years). Four of the seven participants have not edited in more than a year, and I am pinging the three who have: User:Presidentman, User:Mjrmtg, and User:Bubba73. Right now, the task force's presence consists of about 40 pages for administration (mostly assessment categories) and transclusion of a note (This page is supported by the South Georgia (U.S. state) task force.) and an obsolete to-do list on ~450 talk pages.

If the task force is no longer useful, I could: (1) disable support in {{WikiProject Georgia (U.S. state)}}; (2) delete all categories once emptied; and (3) delete or redirect remaining task force pages to the parent project. Or, I could leave it alone. I defer to this project's members to decide what is most helpful. Thanks, -- Black Falcon (talk) 03:32, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm still around and doing stuff, but I haven't seen anything on the task force. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 03:34, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm also still here. I'd prefer you leave it alone. --Mjrmtg (talk) 11:25, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm happy to do that, but do you foresee the task force being revived in the future? It seems dead or defunct to me, not just inactive. Thanks, -- Black Falcon (talk) 01:02, 23 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

User script to detect unreliable sources

[edit]

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Got blown up. I've done a lot of clean up and source improvement, but it oculd always use more work. The UPI article is pretty long and extensive, so it could be used as a further source. It got a whopping 500,000 views yesterday, and presumably will get hundreds of thousands today. It should be a better article to reflect the sourced information. Ayersville, GA

[edit]

The information on the Ayersville, GA Wiki Site is totally false information & should be deleted! Jeremiah & Nathaniel Ayers did not settle this area. Moses Ayers settled and found Ayersville. I know because I am a descendant of this Ayers family. Either delete it, or correct it! 2600:6C5E:127F:DADE:644F:7CFB:E566:5D38 (talk) 20:34, 26 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion about the specific article should happen on the article's talk page. With that being said, the information in the article is reliably sourced, and "I know because I am a descendant" is not a reliable source; we're not going to delete the article or "correct" it based on you saying you're descended from someone that you think settled an area. You would need reliable sources to verify that claim, especially when reliable sources contradict what you're saying. - Aoidh (talk) 01:15, 27 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Project-independent quality assessments

[edit]

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present. Hello, just to mention I came across this book, where the description of the file reads: Brantley County, a sketch of the life of the late Benjamin Daniel Brantley [ Benjamin Daniel Brantley (Q96972381)? ] for whom the proposed county is named.

It further reads: In South Georgia, particularly, the new county of Brantley is of interest, and the Morning News is glad to have the opportunity of presenting a sketch of the distinguished Georgian who will live in the name of one of these new counties and on the future maps of his native state.
Benjamin Daniel Brantley died at his home in Blackshear, Pierce county, on March 13, 1891, and now nearly thirty years later the Georgia Legislature has proposed to create a new county and, in honor of his memory, to name it Brantley.

Wondering if that could be checked/confirmed? Thank you so much for your time. Lotje (talk) 14:04, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Potentially incorrect General Assembly numbers listed for Georgia?

[edit]

Hi there, I was notified that my discussion item (talk article) was within the scope of this project, so figured I would mention it here. Apologies if there is some format or procedure that I am not following. I am a Wikipedia noob.

That aside, the current General Assembly number listed in Wikipedia is the 157th. There are various articles going back to the 128th, then 80th, and then the 1st. I have been unable to validate the assembly numbers given by the sources in these articles. The first assembly occurred in 1777, and given 2 years per assembly until the current date, the current assembly number should theoretically be the 123rd. I'd be happy to be wrong, but I figured I should bring it to this community's attention. RubberFerret (talk) 01:57, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
