California's 28th State Senate district is one of 40 California State Senate districts. The 28th Senate district encompasses a part of Los Angeles County, including all of Carson, Del Aire, El Segundo, Hermosa Beach, Lennox, Lomita, Manhattan Beach, Marina del Rey, Redondo Beach, Torrance, West Carson, and parts of Long Beach and Los Angeles. It is represented by Democrat Ted Lieu of Torrance.

2011 redistricting[edit]

After redistricting in 2011 by the California Citizens Redistricting Commission, the new district now includes 42.5% of Riverside County. Cities in the district include Indio, Murrieta, Palm Springs, and Temecula. The new district lines will take effect in the 2014 election.

2011 special election[edit]

A special election was held in 2011 to replace Jenny Oropeza, who died just before the 2010 election (and who voters selected posthumously). Democrat Ted Lieu defeated four Republicans, one Democrat, and two independents.
