Cars 2 is an upcoming American computer-animated 3-D film. It is the sequel to the 2006 film, Cars. It is produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. It is currently scheduled for release in theaters in the US on June 24, 2011 and in the UK on July 22, 2011.[4]

The film is directed by John Lasseter and co-directed by Brad Lewis. It features the voices of Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Michael Caine and Emily Mortimer.

It will be released in Disney Digital 3-D, IMAX 3D, RealD 3D and 2-D.

Premise

The official synopsis of the press release reads:[5]

Star racecar Lightning McQueen and the incomparable tow truck Mater take their friendship to exciting new places in Cars 2 when they head overseas to compete in the first-ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage.

Torn between assisting Lightning McQueen in the high-profile race and towing the line in a top-secret spy mission, Mater's action-packed journey leads him on an explosive chase through the streets of Japan and Europe, trailed by his friends and watched by the whole world. Adding to the fast-paced fun is a colorful new all-car cast that includes secret agents, menacing villains and international racing competitors.

Cars is the second Pixar film, after Toy Story, to have a sequel. John Lasseter, the director of the film, said that he conceived the sequel's story while traveling around the world promoting the first film. He said:

I kept looking out thinking, 'What would Mater do in this situation, you know?' I could imagine him driving around on the wrong side of the road in the UK, going around in big, giant traveling circles in Paris, on the autobahn in Germany, dealing with the motor scooters in Italy, trying to figure out road signs in Japan.[13]

Cars 2 was originally scheduled for a summer 2012 release, but Pixar moved the release up by a year earlier.[14]

In 2009, Disney registered several domain names in relation to the title World Grand Prix.[15]

Replacements

Two voice actors of the original film Cars have died since its release:

George Carlin (who voiced Fillmore) died on June 22, 2008 due to heart failure. Fillmore will be returning for this film,[16] but his voice actor has yet to be announced.

Paul Newman (who voiced Doc Hudson) died on September 26, 2008 due to cancer. John Lasseter was adamant at first that Newman would return. After Newman's death, Lasseter said they would "see how the story goes with Doc Hudson."[14] It is now confirmed that Doc Hudson will not be returning for the film.[17]

Marketing

The first teaser trailer of the film appeared on the Blu-ray and DVD editions of Toy Story 3 that was released on November 2, 2010. The teaser trailer was also released on Pixar's official YouTube channel.

The full length trailer of the film was released on Pixar's official YouTube channel on November 15th, 2010. The full length trailer was also shown in front of Tangled. Regarding the trailer, the source was quoted as saying:

Much longer in length than the brief teaser we got last month, the trailer introduces us to some of the new characters, and shows actual footage from the film. It also does a good job of introducing us to the plot, which has Lightning McQueen and Mater going on the international racing circuit, only to be mistaken for secret agents.[18]

On the facebook page of the film, a tab labeled 'Cars Showcase' was added in which images and descriptions of new characters from the film are unveiled occasionally.[19][20] Videos of the characters in a turntable are also being released on Pixar's YouTube channel.

Short film

Lee Unkrich, the director of Toy Story 3, confirmed that a short film featuring characters from the Toy Story film series would be included in the theatrical release of Cars 2.[21]

The short is titled Hawaii and it will feature the characters of Barbie and Ken from Toy Story 3.[22]
