WFGX is a television station serving the Mobile, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida areas. The station is licensed to Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and broadcasts on digital channel 50 (virtual channel 35). WFGX is primarily affiliated with MyNetworkTV, though it also carries programming from This TV on a secondary basis and Jewelry Television to fill their overnight schedule, as well as programming from all-music network TheCoolTV on digital subchannel 35.2. WFGX is owned and operated by Sinclair Broadcast Group and is jointly operated with Sinclair's ABC affiliate WEAR-TV from WEAR's Pensacola studios.
WFGX is the MyNetworkTV-affiliated television station for the Florida Panhandle's Emerald Coast and Lower Alabama's Gulf Coast. Licensed to Fort Walton Beach, it broadcasts a high definition digital signal on UHF channel 50 (or virtual channel 35.1 via PSIP) from a transmitter in unincorporated Baldwin County, Alabama east of Rosinton. The station can also be seen on Mediacom channel 7, Comcast channel 19, and Cox channel 20. There is a high definition feed provided on Mediacom digital channel 807, Comcast digital channel 1019, and Cox digital channel 1020.

Owned by the Sinclair Broadcast Group, WFGX is sister to ABC affiliate WEAR-TV and the two outlets share studios on Mobile Highway/U.S. 90/SR 10A in unincorporated Escambia County, Florida (with a Pensacola postal address). Syndicated programming on this station includes The Jerry Springer Show, Maury, Excused, and Scrubs among others. Overnights, it airs paid programming from Jewelry Television while weekends are filled with This TV.
History
WFGX signed on as an independent station in 1987. It became the area's WB affiliate on September 29, 1996, shortly after its previous owners signed a local marketing agreement with WEAR.

From 1996 to 1998, WFGX produced a daily newscast called Emerald Coast News. It was a traditional newscast that was 30 minutes long, and ran at 6:30 pm and 9:00 pm, and featured news, weather, and sports. ECN's focus was on Okaloosa County, and helped provide coverage for its sister station in Pensacola, WEAR. On November 2, 1998, it was announced that the newscast would be terminated, and the final show aired on December 11. The building still houses a bureau news crew for WEAR.

WFGX's former analog signal was very weak (509,000 watts), resulting in marginal (at best) reception outside the immediate Fort Walton Beach area, even in Pensacola. However, it has long identified as "Pensacola/Fort Walton Beach"--unusual since the city of license is normally listed first when a station references another city in its legal ID. It had to rely on cable coverage to reach the entire market. As a result, the WB opted to affiliate with the much stronger WBPG (now WFNA) when it signed on in 2001. The station then reverted to independent status, airing home shopping programming from Jewelry Television and other programming including syndicated shows and infomercials. In 2006, Sinclair opted to afflilate stations with the newly formed MyNetworkTV network across the country, including WFGX. WFGX also increased its digital signal to one million watts, enough to provide a good signal to viewers in Pensacola. However, it was still practically unviewable on the Alabama side of the market.

In July 2010, WFGX's digital signal was moved from Gulf Breeze, Florida to WEAR's transmitter site in Robertsdale, Alabama. With the same power in this new location, WFGX is able to offer a signal similar to that of the other full-powered stations in the area and can now be viewed in the entire market. Within two months, the station began offering a high-definition signal over the air for the first time.

History
Cable & Satellite Coverage
The station signed-on April 7, 1987 as the market's second Independent television outlet after Pensacola's WJTC. Shortly after its owner signed a local marketing agreement (LMA) with WEAR, WFGX became the area's WB affiliate on September 29, 1996. The station former analog signal on UHF channel 35 was very weak (509,000 watts) resulting in marginal (at best) reception outside the immediate Fort Walton Beach area even in Pensacola. This broadcast originated from a transmitter in Gulf Breeze, Florida whereas most television stations in the market had signals based in Alabama. Despite the shortfall in coverage, WFGX has long identified as "Pensacola/Fort Walton Beach" which is unusual since the city of license is normally listed first when a station references another city in its legal on-air identification. It had to rely on cable carriage in order to reach the entire market such as areas surrounding Mobile.
For most of its history, WFGX was unavailable to cable customers on the Alabama side of the market, largely because its analog signal couldn't be seen at all in that area. Mobile's Comcast system didn't pick up channel 35 until October 2010, and only carries it for digital customers on Channel 19. It is still not carried on Mediacom's systems in Baldwin and Mobile counties, even though it has been carried on Mediacom's cable systems on the Florida side of the market (including Santa Rosa County, and Pensacola Beach) for many years.

Eventually with the launch of the more stronger WBPG (now WFNA) from Gulf Shores, Alabama on September 2, 2001, WFGX was replaced as the area's WB affiliate. The station then reverted back to Independent status airing home shopping programming from Jewelry Television and other programming including syndicated shows and infomercials. With the September 2006 shut down and merge between UPN and The WB to form The CW, Sinclair opted to affiliate its stations (including WFGX) with the other new programming service MyNetworkTV. At the same time, WFGX increased its digital signal broadcasting strength to one million watts enough to provide a good signal to viewers in Pensacola. However, it was still practically unviewable on the Alabama side of the market.
It is very likely, however, that WFGX will be available on cable market-wide in the near future. The Federal Communications Commission's must-carry rules give full-powered stations the option of "retransmission consent." This option gives full-powered stations the right to request compensation from cable systems as a condition of carrying them. In this case, Sinclair has the right to require cable systems to carry WFGX as a condition of carrying WEAR. Due to its new status as a full-powered station for most of the market, WFGX and WEAR are encouraging viewers to call their cable company if they are not carrying WFGX.

In July 2010, WFGX's digital transmitter was moved from Gulf Breeze to WEAR's tower east of Rosinton. With the same power in this new location, it is now able to offer a signal similar to that of the other full-powered stations in the market. Within two months, the station began offering a high definition signal over-the-air for the first time. In 1996, WFGX began producing a nightly newscast at 6:30 and 9 called Emerald Coast News originating from studios on Beach Drive in Fort Walton Beach. Each show aired for thirty minutes and the productions specifically focused on Okaloosa County, Florida helping to provide better coverage for WEAR. On December 11, 1998, Emerald Coast News was dropped from WFGX although a bureau currently remains in operation staffed with a reporter working for WEAR.
WFGX is also available on AT&T's recently launched U-verse system in the Mobile-Pensacola market. It can be seen in high definition on U-verse channel 1035 and in standard definition on channel 35.

Due to it not being carried at all in Alabama and (at the time) on satellite, this left most of the market without MNTV. History

On December 11, 1998, Emerald Coast News was dropped from WFGX although a bureau currently remains in operation staffed with a reporter working for WEAR.

Cable and satellite coverage

For most of its history, WFGX was unavailable to cable customers on the Alabama side of the market, largely because its analog signal couldn't be seen at all in that area. Mobile's Comcast system didn't pick up channel 35 until October 2010, and only carries it for digital customers on Channel 19. It is still not carried on Mediacom's systems in Baldwin and Mobile counties, even though it has been carried on Mediacom's cable systems on the Florida side of the market (including Santa Rosa County and Pensacola Beach) for many years.

WFGX is also available on AT&T's recently launched U-verse system in the Mobile-Pensacola market. It can be seen in high definition on U-verse channel 1035 and in standard definition on channel 35. Dish Network and DirecTV both recently picked up WFGX on channel 35, but only in standard definition. WFGX disappeared from Mediacom's cable systems on the Florida side of the market at midnight on January 6, 2007. This was due to a dispute with Sinclair over transmission rights. Since no agreement could be reached in time, Mediacom pulled all of Sinclair's stations, including WFGX. Due to it not being carried at all in Alabama and (at the time) on satellite, this left most of the market without MNTV. The dispute ended on February 2, when the two sides reached an agreement that restored WFGX to Mediacom's cable system.
