On the topic of votestacking, MILHIST does come across as a non-neutral canvassing board at times. For example, during the ARBGWE Request for Arbitration, the page was linked at MILHIST. This resulted in a strong showing by MILHIST coordinators, including one who referenced "Inquisition", "Salem witch trials", the "Great Purge", "Night of the Long Knives", and "Nazi book burnings", and complained about "the insertion of war crime allegations (regardless of accuracy) disrupt[ing] the chronicle" (source). So not exactly a non-partial editor pool when it comes to how war crimes should be portrayed in the articles on military figures. --K.e.coffman (talk) 02:51, 9 February 2019 (UTC)

tps I notified another project and two template talk pages. You seem to be saying that editors can't post neutral notices on MILHIST or involve MILHIST in pertinent discussions because you don't like the outcome when people with different views to yours get involved. For someone who is always banging on about local consensus, you sure don't like community discussions. Or perhaps you do, but only when you get to select who is involved. A certain disruptive user with no USSR/CIS knowledge

I'm really close to leaving Wikipedia because of this disruptive editor -thewolfchild. Can you please back me up in support of having the plainlist? I linked to ~100 photographs of Meklin, and she wears ribbon racks in exactly zero of them, including photos taken long after the war. (Plus I did not include russian-language videos where she was speaking, not wearing ribbons) It is incredibly obnoxiuos that someone with clearly little or no knowledge of the topic is getting in the way of article development - wolf ended up removing important information like her native name, mission numbers, and punctuation in his/her rush to revert my edits. Even another user expressed support for having the plainlist since it is a comprimise between fighting between different icon formatting. I want to including infomation about Meklin's media apperances in the article, like that she was featured on the cover of Smena in 1943, in KP when she was declared a hero, and in Ogoniok, and in a documentary interview, but I had to request it to be locked to prevent wolf from messing it up. Now wolf is outraged that I switched ribbonracks in the infobox to plainlists and got really angry...can you please give me some backup here? I want to [these articles], but I do not want to deal with such a person on a regular basis. I even recruited a new person to Wikipedia to translate articles from Russian to English and Uzbek, but I'm very worried wolf is going to bite this newbie. (I'll tell you more about this newbie in an email...I really don't want wolf to "bite" them just to spite me. This person has lots of knowledge about world history in all kinds of CIS topics, from biography to architecture. They will be very valuable to the project.) Thank you for you support, --PlanespotterA320 (talk) 21:24, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You have done much productive work, as many editors have pointed out before, and I would caution you against giving up because of the actions of one user on one article. This dispute on the Meklin article is being inflated out of proportion. Don't worry about biting because wolf is not, to my knowledge, interested in Uzbek topics, which your new editor is interested in (and there are no ribbons there anyway). There's no problem with you switching ribbons to plainlists, though, and wolf seems to have reacted hastily there. Kges1901 (talk) 23:06, 29 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
No other article on a night witch, member of a sister regiment (125th dive bomber or 568th Fighter), or from list of female heroes of the Soviet Union has the formatting wolf insists on having. I may be a little OCD, but changing such precedent is absolutely intolerable. I now realize what DR means, but do you really think it is best to bring in more editors who have little or no knowledge of the subject that are just seeking another quid-pro-quo vote for the next time they get into a dispute? Wolf didn't hesitate to ping many people at once, but I generally prefer to try not to bother people unless necessary. The new editor I emailed you about is not just interested in Uzbekistan topics but also most of Central Asia, Russia, the Caucuses, Eastern Europe too. But wolf doesn't seem to be hesitant to disrupt topics he is unfamiliar about.--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 02:18, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Because wolf is incredibly insistent (to say the least) for having ribbons in the mainspace, can you please just make a clear-cut comment on the talkpage for Natalya Meklin directly that supports the use of a plainlist without icons in the article? (Because talking to wolf is like talking to a wall).--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 16:01, 30 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Turns out he is very hostile to many other users - can you join in at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Administrators%27_noticeboard/Incidents#Hostility_toward_other_editors_from_User:Thewolfchild --PlanespotterA320 (talk) 22:38, 13 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion declined: Francis Charles Peecock

Hello Kges1901. I am just letting you know that I declined the speedy deletion of Francis Charles Peecock, a page you tagged for speedy deletion, because of the following concern: Playing for a notable team indicates importance/significance (WP:CCSI#ATHLETE). Thank you. SoWhy 08:15, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@SoWhy: It would seem that Peecock fails GNG because the only non-routine coverage used as a source in the article is his obituary. Does the SNG still serve as enough when GNG is so blatantly failed? Kges1901 (talk) 09:42, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Notability is not a relevant criterion for WP:A7 as the policy quite clearly states ("a lower standard than notability"). If you want to argue based on lack of notability, WP:AFD is that way. Regards SoWhy 09:55, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for enlightening me on that. I intend to take it to AFD then. Kges1901 (talk) 09:58, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

NPR Newsletter No.15 16 November 2018

Chart of the New Pages Patrol backlog for the past 6 months.

Hello Kges1901,

Community Wishlist Survey – NPP needs you – Vote NOW
 • Community Wishlist Voting takes place 16 to 30 November for the Page Curation and New Pages Feed improvements, and other software requests. The NPP community is hoping for a good turnout in support of the requests to Santa for the tools we need. This is very important as we have been asking the Foundation for these upgrades for 4 years.
If this proposal does not make it into the top ten, it is likely that the tools will be given no support at all for the foreseeable future. So please put in a vote today.
We are counting on significant support not only from our own ranks, but from everyone who is concerned with maintaining a Wikipedia that is free of vandalism, promotion, flagrant financial exploitation and other pollution.
With all 650 reviewers voting for these urgently needed improvements, our requests would be unlikely to fail. See also The Signpost Special report: 'NPP: This could be heaven or this could be hell for new users – and for the reviewers', and if you are not sure what the wish list is all about, take a sneak peek at an article in this month's upcoming issue of The Signpost which unfortunately due to staff holidays and an impending US holiday will probably not be published until after voting has closed.

ArbCom 2018 election voter message

Hello, Kges1901. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Military history WikiProject World War I Op-Ed Series

The Teamwork Barnstar
In recognition of the role you played in cleaning up my God-awful spelling and grammar in the World War I Op-Ed series published by the Military history WikiProject's newsletter The Bugle over the last four years, I hereby present you with this teamwork barnstar. It is thanks to so many different editors like you who took the time to copyedit the nearly four year long series that it ended up being as successful as it was, and I am grateful for your help since spelling and grammar are not my strongest suites. We have these two embarassingly named 'XX SFTS BCATP' articles (Category:Royal Canadian Air Force Squadrons (BCATP)), both for training schools that were a part of 3 Training Command. • Many thanks Kges. Can you recheck your sources please for No. 2 Air Navigation School RCAF? It's in New Brunswick, which is in the Maritimes, but your sources do not list it in 3 TC. NPR Newsletter No.16 15 December 2018

Hello Kges1901,

Reviewer of the Year

This year's award for the Reviewer of the Year goes to Onel5969. Around on Wikipedia since 2011, their staggering number of 26,554 reviews over the past twelve months makes them, together with an additional total of 275,285 edits, one of Wikipedia's most prolific users.

Thanks are also extended for their work to JTtheOG (15,059 reviews), Boleyn (12,760 reviews), Cwmhiraeth (9,001 reviews), Semmendinger (8,440 reviews), PRehse (8,092 reviews), Arthistorian1977 (5,306 reviews), Abishe (4,153 reviews), Barkeep49 (4,016 reviews), and Elmidae (3,615 reviews).
Cwmhiraeth, Semmendinger, Barkeep49, and Elmidae have been New Page Reviewers for less than a year — Barkeep49 for only seven months, while Boleyn, with an edit count of 250,000 since she joined Wikipedia in 2008, has been a bastion of New Page Patrol for many years.

See also the list of top 100 reviewers.

Less good news, and an appeal for some help

The backlog is now approaching 5,000, and still rising. There are around 640 holders of the NPR flag, most of whom appear to be inactive. The 10% of the reviewers who do 90% of the work could do with some support especially as some of them are now taking a well deserved break.

Really good news - NPR wins the Community Wishlist Survey 2019

At #1 position, the Community Wishlist poll closed on 3 December with a resounding success for NPP, reminding the WMF and the volunteer communities just how critical NPP is to maintaining a clean encyclopedia and the need for improved tools to do it. A big 'thank you' to everyone who supported the NPP proposals. See the results.

Training video

Due to a number of changes having been made to the feed since this three-minute video was created, we have been asked by the WMF for feedback on the video with a view to getting it brought up to date to reflect the new features of the system. Please leave your comments here, particularly mentioning how helpful you find it for new reviewers.

warheroes.ru website in citations

I found the discussion that went against the use of warheroes.ru as a source I can't help but notice that 1. There was very little discussion in the first place 2. The rejection of it in large part due to the language it is published in and the language of the sources 3. The rejection of it based in large part by users on the grounds of not being able to verify it;s contents due to the language barrier (with the lack of trying to find a Russian-language Wikipedian to access the accuracy of the contents), among many other issues.

I intend to present my argument something like this: I have found warheroes.ru to be much more reliable than many other sources that are allowed in Wikipedia articles. Some people may have been confused and thought it was a self-published source or a Wikipedia transclusion after Nikolai Ufarkin and Andrey Simonov, two of the websites writers, donated their articles under a CC-BY-SA licesnse via OTRS so the material could be used directly on Russian Wikipedia, like this. I happen to have copies of the Russian encyclopedias of Heroes of the Soviet Union from the 1980's, and have seen many times that warheroes does not repeat errors from them but corrects them and mentions that the official Soviet biography had such error. (For example, the Soviet encyclopedia incorrectly said that Irbaykhan Baybulatov was a Kumyk, but he was actually a Chechen, and that was all noted in the website. (A classic case of de-valuing the merits of Chechens in WWII after the Aardakh). Information on warheroes.ru can be easily checked against scans of official documents on pamyat-naroda.ru, and I have yet to find any inaccuracy in the prose of award lists on the website. And death dates on the website are correct as based on official death certificates as opposed to OCR-scans of old encyclopedias that often result in seeing many typos. So, while a few English speaker with less than an L-1 understanding of Russian and no access to any Russian print sources of any kind might not have been able to access the website as verifiable in a brief discussion, it is safe to say that the content on the website is verifiable and accurate - based on a long-term assessment of the website's content and comparison of it to various primary sources, wartime newspaper clippings, Soviet encyclopedias, official documents, memoirs, and other information. (Also, the coordinator/owner of the site does not write any articles, so again, not "self-published" - and the writers often perfect edit others articles.)

Think it will be enough to convince Parsecboy? He clearly has very minimal knowledge of Soviet+Russian history, it's been hard to explain some things in the past. I don't want to let a language barrier and the fact that one user don't have certain books be used as an excuse to blacklist an entire site, especially since the website is far more accurate than many other sources like essays and the official books that kept on changing the story from the Soviet era or even simply described executed people as "dead day.month.year." It appears that the blacklist was informal anyway, and not officially listed at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources. (Either way, I think it should be listed there as "Generally reliable" there - can you help it achieve such status?)--PlanespotterA320 (talk) 02:00, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

 • Warheroes was never considered unreliable in general, it was just considered to be not high quality enough for A-class. Sources such as warheroes are still ok for B-class, for example, but tend to raise questions on reviews for higher assessment levels. I would advise you against making comments about Parsecboy as he was just raising a point that had come up earlier, as you can see from the discussion. To fulfill WP:RS at a high quality level I've generally found that websites need to have editors that are published experts in the relevant field, so at least Andrey Simonov (being a published author)'s entries can be considered to be high quality RS.Kges1901 (talk) 00:30, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikiprojects

I'm not exactly welcome on Peacemaker's Talk page, so I'm responding here. In re: this, I don't believe that you've ever posted to WikiProject Germany. I've gotten responses there directly as well as comments on various discussions that I linked there. Not all noticeboards are as active as MILHIST.

--K.e.coffman (talk) 02:51, 9 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) I notified another project and two template talk pages.
