The Iron Patriot is a patriotism-themed exoskeleton used by several fictional characters appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics.

Publication history

An amalgam of Iron Man and Captain America, the Iron Patriot first appeared Dark Avengers #1 (March 2009), and created by Brian Michael Bendis and Mike Deodato.

Fictional history

Norman Osborn

Norman Osborn donned the original Iron Patriot armor during the Dark Reign storyline to exert his authority as "commander" of H.A.M.M.E.R. and the Dark Avengers even in spite of the original Avengers.[1] However, the Iron Patriot's star-shaped Uni Beam projector had a less powerful output.[2] Unsurprisingly, Osborn's activities as the Iron Patriot have been jeopardized by various superheroes: Osborn gets tricked into attacking Tony Stark,[3] and when the New Avengers led by Captain America used the Iron Patriot's tracking device on Luke Cage as a trick to destroy his own house.[4] During Osborn's invasion of Asgard on the grounds of a national security threat, the Iron Patriot is disabled during Osborn's fight with Steve Rogers, revealing Osborn's Green Goblin-like face paint.[5] When Rogers, Stark and Thor transfer him to the Raft penitentiary, Osborn blames his Goblin alter-ego for ruining his chance to protect America as the Iron Patriot.[6]

James Rhodes temporarily wore the Iron Patriot armor in Secret Avengers vol. 2 and the Iron Patriot series.[7][8]

Iron Patriot Drones

The Iron Patriot Drones are used by various individuals.

One is seen during the Fear Itself storyline to assists the New Avengers, but the Iron Patriot Drone is vaporized by the Red Skull's powers.[9]

Another is seen during the Marvel NOW! event at a weapons expo that Daisy Johnson and Nick Fury, Jr. were attending. During an attack carried out by A.I.M., the Scientist Supreme takes the opportunity to steal and replicate the Iron Patriot Drone.[10] As a result, its low-level A.I. grew considerably as an army of sentient drones, which A.I.M. used to incriminate the United States in numerous international attacks. The Iron Patriot Drones were sent to attack Iran, to which S.H.I.E.L.D. sent the Hulk to destroy them in response.[11] Using holographic communication, S.H.I.E.L.D. hacks into the A.I.M. network so the Iron Patriot Drones can understand these programmed actions are wrong.[7]

The Iron Patriot Drones are next seen during the "Inhumanity" storyline as the Secret Avengers' support until they're disabled by the Junkman's technopathic Inhuman powers.[12]

Toni Ho

Dr. Toni Ho wore two versions of her own Iron Patriot armor as a member of the U.S. Avengers; a standard version,[13] and a heavy combat variation.[14][15]

Sharon Carter

Sharon Carter briefly wore the Iron Patriot armor to combat Selene.[16]

Other versions

American Son

The American Son is another patriotic-themed exoskeleton used by Harry Osborn during the "Dark Reign" storyline,[17] and later by Gabriel Stacy.[18]

Iron Hulk

The Iron Hulk is an alias used initially by Robert Maverick / Red Hulk during the "No Surrender" arc,[19] and later by Jennifer Walters / She-Hulk during the "Age of Khonshu" arc.[20]

Ultimate Marvel

The Ultimate Marvel equivalent of the Iron Patriot appears during the "United We Stand" storyline due to Tony Stark / Iron Man inspired by Steve Rogers / Captain America.[21][22]

  • The Iron Patriot armor makes its animated debut in the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series,[23][24] where it is used by Norman Osborn (voiced by Steven Weber).[25]
    • The American Son armor is used by Harry Osborn (voiced by Matt Lanter), and is instead called the Patrioteer.[26]
    • Two additional Iron Patriot armors are briefly seen in Oscorp's secret armory, with one resembling the original comic design.[citation needed]
  • The Iron Patriot armor makes sporadic appearances in the Avengers Assemble animated series, in which it is in the possession of Tony Stark / Iron Man. In the episode "Exodus", it is among the Iron Legion.[27] In the episodes "Avengers Disassembled" and "The Ultimates", Ultron hijacks the Iron Patriot armor to attack the Avengers. In the episode "New Year's Resolution", the Iron Patriot armor is merged with Kang the Conqueror's time-travelling robot sent to eliminate Howard Stark and Peggy Carter.[citation needed]
    • The heavy combat Iron Patriot armor equipped with a shield appears in the episode "World War Hulk", in which it is utilized by Steve Rogers / Captain America.[28]
    • A mech-sized Iron Patriot battlesuit appears in the episode "Civil War, Part 2: The Mighty Avengers". Created by Truman Marsh, it is hijacked by Baron Strucker in order to fight the original and Mighty Avengers.[citation needed]
