Hello. See Template talk:Year in baseball#suggestion. We need a bot that can replace the sidebar Year in baseball with: 1) Year in baseball top; and 2) at the bottom of the page the new footer Year in baseball. This would be done on all of the "[YEAR] in baseball" articles, about 140 or so pages. Right before this is done, the code from the talk page needs to be copied onto the template so the current sidebar template becomes a navbox. Any takers? If so, please follow up at the talk page Template talk:Year in baseball#suggestion. Rgrds. --Tombstone (talk) 15:16, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

ClueBot number
I am a new user at Wikipedia.

Before I realized how to use Wikipedia properly by using the sandbox, I uploaded a page which contained numerous errors.

I then edited using sandbox and when I tried to upload the corrected version I was issued a ClueBot number because it appeared as if I were vandalizing the site.

My Clue Bot number is 539482 and my user name is Hdrosenberg. How do I go about removing the erroneous page and replacing it with the correct one?

thank you,

hdrosenberg

This is a page for requesting tasks to be done by bots per the bot policy. This is an appropriate place to put ideas for uncontroversial bot tasks, to get early feedback on ideas for bot tasks (controversial or not), and to seek bot operators for bot tasks. Consensus-building discussions requiring large community input (such as request for comments) should normally be held at WP:VPPROP or other relevant pages (such as a WikiProject's talk page).

You can check the "Commonly Requested Bots" box above to see if a suitable bot already exists for the task you have in mind. If you have a question about a particular bot, contact the bot operator directly via their talk page or the bot's talk page. If a bot is acting improperly, follow the guidance outlined in WP:BOTISSUE. For broader issues and general discussion about bots, see the bot noticeboard.

Before making a request, please see the list of frequently denied bots, either because they are too complicated to program, or do not have consensus from the Wikipedia community. If you are requesting that a template (such as a WikiProject banner) is added to all pages in a particular category, please be careful to check the category tree for any unwanted subcategories. It is best to give a complete list of categories that should be worked through individually, rather than one category to be analyzed recursively (see example difference).

Alternatives to bot requests

Note to bot operators: The BOTREQ template can be used to give common responses, and make it easier to keep track of the task's current status. If you complete a request, note that you did with done, and archive the request after a few days (WP:1CA is useful here).

Please add your bot requests to the bottom of this page.

Bot tagging for WP:FILM

Is it possible to have a bot run through all subcategories of Category:Films by year (excluding Category:The Wizard of Oz (1939 film), Category:Dragnet, Category:Dragnet episodes, Category:Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Category:Sholay, Category:Donnie Darko, Category:Chak De India, Category:Enchanted (film) and Category:Songs from Enchanted) and ensure that all articles have the Film project banner on their talk page, keeping all existing assessments and other parameters where they currently exist?

In addition, can the bot add the appropriate task force parameters to the banner in the following categories:

I made this proposal at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Films#Bot tagging articles for WP:FILM last week, where it met with approval. Let me know if you need anything else, this is my first such request here. :) PC78 (talk) 23:07, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Settlements in the Achaea prefecture

A number of articles in List of settlements in the Achaea prefecture have hard-coded tables instead of Infobox Settlement, I fixed one, but there are plenty more. Can anyone fix them by bot? Andy Mabbett (User:Pigsonthewing); Andy's talk; Andy's edits 13:19, 10 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In the absence of anyone more experienced than me at making bots, I'll start to draw up some code for it. I won't file a BRFA until I'm sure I (or rather, LivingBot) can handle it. Anyone else who wants to take it from just shout :) . - Jarry1250 (t, c) 17:57, 10 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Anglo-Saxon character bot

I would like to request a bot to run at a future date to change all instances of ƿ to w and all instances of ȝ to g for the Anglo-Saxon wiki. There may be need of one to switch accents to macrons (á to ā). How easy would this be? --JJohnson1701 (talk) 07:33, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(Please excuse my ignorance of the Anglo-Saxon language if the following sounds stupid). Technically, this is a very simple task. However, it is unlikely to be a desirable change. While, the majority of the usage of these characters are probably wrong it is unlikely they are all wrong. Articles often contain snippets of foreign language text (on purpose) and even references to characters themselves.
So even if these characters are never used in Anglo-Saxon words they might still be used correctly in articles. --ThaddeusB (talk) 00:37, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The purpose in the Anglo Saxon Wiki would be a stylistic (MoS) change, and if it's agreed by consensus there I would be happy to do this task. Rich Farmbrough, 09:27 15 January 2009 (UTC).

Automated archiving of WP:MFD

Currently, everything at MfD has to be done by hand. There are a lot of discussions there that get closed early, it would be great if a bot would go through a 3-4 times a day and remove the closed discussions from the active portion of the page. The bot would also take care of archiving, although this is less of a pain to do by hand. Thanks,--Aervanath talks like a mover, but not a shaker 07:56, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

User:MfDBot is the current bot dedicated to this function, although it has been down for some time. Poke ST47 to fix it, he just ignores me. >_> Synergy 17:44, 11 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

More Film cleanup

A while back the talk page templates Film needs cast section, Filmimage and Film needs synopsis were incorporated into the Film project banner. Can a bot therefore replace all uses of these templates with the appropriate parameter in Film, i.e.

This will help remove a lot of template clutter from a lot of talk pages.

In addition to this, can all 5000 or so transclusions of the redirect FilmsWikiProject be replaced with Film?

Also, can the following deprecated parameters be removed from all transclusions of the banner:

 • |importance=
 • |attention=
 • |auto=
 • |portal1-name=
 • |portal2-name=
 • |portal3-name=
 • |portal4-name=
 • |portal5-name=

Thanks in advance for any help with the above. PC78 (talk) 11:09, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Would it be worth LivingBot quickly changing FilmsWikiProject to Film? It seems like the sort of non-controversial thing it could do, or rather, a nice easy thing I could code. Other people have much better bots, but if even that would be a start, no? - Jarry1250 (t, c) 17:37, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, WP:R#NOTBROKEN says that replacing a redirect for the sake of replacing the redirect (with no other edits) shouldn't be done. I could easily have AnomieBOT do the request, but in the past there has been resistance to running a bot over large numbers of pages just to remove template parameters that have no effect anyway, and 54236 potential edits is a rather large number, so I'm waiting for others' input before deciding. Anomie 18:29, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Bang goes non-controversial! :) - Jarry1250 (t, c) 18:53, 12 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I was under the impression that it was standard practice to run a bot to replace all instances of a deprecated template. Even with the large number of edits, that shouldn't be a big deal. As for removing the deprecated parameters, though...I don't know what the standard practice is for that. I thought the practice there was just to change the template docs to emphasize that those were deprecated parameters, and then the changes would gradually filter through. However, please don't interpret this as a definite opinion, I'm just describing my impression of the standard practice. If I'm wrong, ignore me.--Aervanath talks like a mover, but not a shaker 03:37, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm... Well, if the main part of my request (replacing the templates) is doabale then that would still be a big help. The redirects and obsolete parameters are not a big issue, but perhaps they could be dealt with on any pages affected by the main change? PC78 (talk) 07:58, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I have a list of the 4700 article talk pages using the deprecated template, ready to be changed in name alone at a moment's notice. Unfortunately, the above doesn't look like a consensus to me, and anyway, someone else might be able to do it better than me. - Jarry1250 (t, c) 19:03, 13 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine. Like I said, I would prefer to focus on replacing the three templates. If the redirects and the obsolete parameters can be tacked on to that then great, but I can see how doing those in isolation would result in a lot of trivial edits. PC78 (talk) 00:44, 14 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
BRFA filed Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/AnomieBOT 23, for the replacing of the three named templates and the other cleanups on those pages only. Anomie 03:24, 15 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Y Done replacing the three templates named (on 14037 pages!). Do you intend to have the templates deleted now? Anomie 04:45, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work! I had to turn bot edits off my watchlist, as it was being crippled (2,100+ articles came up!). Lugnuts (talk) 08:03, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot Anomie! :) I've already had the three templates unprotected and marked them as deprecated. WP:FILM seems to archive obsolete pages rather than delete, so I don't think any further action is required. PC78 (talk) 17:48, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Page creation

Inline citations

Greetings - I'm sure that this must have been dealt with somewhere or other, and if so, apologies, but would it be possible to get a bot to fix the umpteen examples of full stops and commas that get plonked after that final ...ref/> - as in ...ref/>. and ...ref/>, or would it lead to choas because it might interfere with legitimate formats? Cheers! --Technopat (talk) 00:24, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WP:REFPUN says either way is acceptable, as long as the whole article has the same format. But the format shouldn't be automatically changed from one to the other without discussion with the active editors of the article if there are any. I suppose if the program identified what form was more predominant, then something could happen. §hepTalk 00:36, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I made the unforgiveable mistake of not sloughing through the Wikipedia alphabet soup before starting to "correct" the inline cites in Ernst Nolte… before conking out halfway through when my circuits locked up out of sheer tedium. Now it's stuck in limbo. Can a bot come to the rescue and change it back to what it was before, or finish conversion?--Goodmorningworld (talk) 02:27, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The script User:Gimmetrow/fixRefs.js would appear to be what you are looking for; it moves refs to follow punctuation marks. Dr pda (talk) 03:00, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
fixRefs is a user script, so you decide when it is appropriate to use it at any particular article. Gimmetrow 03:10, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging articles as Uncat

It would be nice if someone could create a bot that tags articles in Special:UncategorizedPages, so that people like User:T@nn could focus on actually categorizing them, instead of simply tagging and running. ErikTheBikeMan (talk) 04:09, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I already do this task. I am converting it to a PHP bot to run on a scheduler/cron job. —Nn123645 (talk) 12:36, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The template redirect Bristol is under discussion at the moment. The banner has been moved to Bristol WP so can all links that currently link to Bristol, be changed to Bristol WP? Only all the current links, not future ones. Simply south not SS, sorry 13:01, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, WP:R#NOTBROKEN says that replacing a redirect for the sake of replacing the redirect (with no other edits) shouldn't be done. (Quote from Anomie, who is very knowledgeable on bot matters) - Jarry1250 (t, c) 16:56, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Easy enough to do if there is a reason beyond simply bypassing the redirect. I'm guessing the intent is to re-purpose the template name? If so, please provide a link to the discussion. That would help us understand your request. -- JLaTondre (talk) 17:10, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there everyone. I wonder if someone might be able to create a bot for me that could perform two tasks on all of the articles in Category:Huddersfield Town F.C. seasons. The first task that needs doing is the replacement of all instances of in the articles with ; the second task is to replace the hyphens in the article titles with endashes (–). This shouldn't be too taxing. Thanks in advance. – PeeJay 22:17, 16 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a bit confused as to why the template should be changed. The first one is a navbox linking various articles about the club, and the second links season articles. Could you elaborate on why the replacement is needed? Would it be better if both boxes were added to the articles (perhaps within a collapsible box)? If there's a discussion I've missed and I'm wrong then I'd be happy to code something to do this. Richard0612 11:11, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well, we could simply add the new navbox to the articles, or we could replace the generic club navbox with the club seasons navbox. Either way, it's a big job that a bot would help tons with. If you think it would be better to simply add the seasons navbox instead of replacing the generic one, that's fine. – PeeJay 11:27, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I do think that that would be a better idea, but I've learned from doing such large-scale jobs in the past that it's a good idea to get consensus before running. I would feel much happier if this was run by the Football project first to avoid me having to undo hundreds of edits ! Richard0612 11:48, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I guarantee you that there is no chance of this having to be reverted. The seasons navbox needs adding whether the general navbox is removed or not, in order for the articles to fall in line with other clubs' seasons articles, and the replacement of the hyphens with endashes in the article titles is a no-brainer. – PeeJay 11:58, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Coding... Sorry, reading my earlier comment again I wonder what I was really thinking (or whether I was at all...), I suppose I'm just a bit wary after having to revert ~250 edits from a previous run. Anyway, this shouldn't take long at all to code. Just to clarify, you say that the hyphens should be replaced with endashes in the article titles, I take it that you want the article actually moved to a new title with the endash, correct? Richard0612 12:10, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Correctamundo! Cheers dude. – PeeJay 12:12, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
BRFA filed - here. Richard0612 13:43, 17 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

IRC

There are two templates for the same topic. Template:IRC clients and Template:IRC footer I added to the first template the information that there mising of the second template. can somebody write a bot, that the irc clients - template will be renamed in irc and added to every page which is in the template? (and the second template should be removed) mabdul 0=* 15:23, 18 January 2009 (UTC) oh and there is a third template, called Template:IRC networks mabdul 0=* 15:28, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

So you basically want to replace those three templates with a new one called IRC? Unfortunately irc exists already and is used, so you need to decide on another name (I think IRC footer works nicely actually). I suggest you ask Anomie (talk · contribs) directly for this task if he does not read this request - he got the needed scripts for template replacement in his bot already. Regards SoWhy 15:43, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
oh ok didn't know/looked up if there is any template called irc. what about Template:Internet Relay Chat? ok, I will ask him. thx mabdul 0=* 15:50, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I like the organization of IRC footer better than IRC clients, the latter template is just too large. IRC footer needs cleaning up to remove the plethora of redlinks, though. I think some input from WP:WikiProject Computing would be helpful to gain a consensus of what exactly should be done here. Anomie 17:16, 18 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is possible, but unlikely to be a task that is desirable for a bot to do. Articles often contain foreign text - for example, in the references section - and thus blindly changing words from English to Tagalog will cause undesirable changes to be made in some cases. --ThaddeusB (talk) 04:35, 19 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I plan to use it just on all articles in Kaurian:Distritong Pambatas ng Pilipinas in Tagalog Wikipedia. Nickrds09 (talk) 16:34, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mixed drink job

Could some one please change all of the articles that are classified under Category:Cocktails and change them so that they fall under Category:Mixed drinks? If they already have the mixed drink cat on them, just delete the cocktails cat. For now leave please the sub-categories alone.

There are about 65 articles under that cat.

Is WP:CFD the better place for this ? -- Tinu Cherian - 12:18, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AfD Notification bot

Articles get nominated for AfD. Articles also get tagged with relevant Wikiprojects. Seems to me that it would be a good idea if a bot could automatically notify the talk pages of Wikiprojects that are associated with articles that have been nominated at AfD that the article has been nominated. Thus if an article is nominated for AfD, and it is tagged with WP:KENT, WP:AVIATION and WP:Disaster Management, those three Wikiprojects would be notified that the article had been nominated. It would be a good idea if the bot also notified the AfD discussion which Wikiprojects it had notified. Mjroots (talk) 16:56, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sort of like User:B. Wolterding/Article alerts. LegoKontribsTalkM 17:02, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, but as far as I can tell, that bot doesn't do it automatically, and doesn't notify the talk page of the Wikiproject. Mjroots (talk) 17:04, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
When you mean automatic, are you saying that it would do it for every single project on a opt-out basis? LegoKontribsTalkM 17:32, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, hadn't thought about opt-out. Maybe what I'm suggesting is too dramatic. Mjroots (talk) 17:55, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Opt-in would probably be a better idea. If you want that, then I can code that. LegoKontribsTalkM 19:10, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that this should be opt-in. For a less-active Wikiproject, this is just going to be a bunch of pointless talk page spam. Mr.Z-man 23:59, 20 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is a bit of pain for bigger projects too. Consider WP:INDIA / WP:WPBIO / WP:MILHIST which may get some 10-15 related AFDs everyday -- Tinu Cherian - 11:40, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
But bigger WPs usually have special sections for such AfDs to be posted at. If the bot could be scripted so that each WP can decide whether they want a talk page message from the bot or just want the bot to list it in that section (with an additional parameter maybe, which page to post it to, ideally a sub-page like Wikipedia:WikiProject Doctor Who/Deletion discussions), I think such a bot would be welcomed by many WikiProjects. Regards SoWhy 12:02, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Big projects may use Article Alerts by Wolterding like Wikipedia:WikiProject India/Article alerts or deletion sorting like WP:DSI. Other projects interested can have the alerts on the project talk page -- Tinu Cherian - 12:44, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

With bot listed above, you can set it to only update AFDs (or all deletion works) and transclude the subpage it creates onto the Talk: page of the project. §hepTalk 17:47, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone make a bot to use WebCite to archive URLs automatically

This website allows free archiving of web pages, so that link rot doesn't make a reference unusable. They've actually thought of doing this themselveshere, but I bet someone here could get it done a lot faster. They talk about doing it as the refs are added, but a really smart bot might even be able to do it for some preexisting refs. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) (contribs) 14:38, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a good idea actually and not hard to code I'd guess :-) SoWhy 14:51, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bot needed to fix Year in Baseball template please

Rgrds. --Tombstone (talk) 15:16, 21 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How do I go about removing the erroneous page and replacing it with the correct one?

thank you,

hdrosenberg
