    Pictures of tanks

Before I sign off, I'd like to ask someone here where I could ask for some (20-30) photos of tanks and self propelled artillery platforms to be identified. Some of these are the only ones in the world, so II thought they would look good in an article. I will upload the photos once the question is answered (they are all from the Kubinko Tank Museum in Kubinko, Russia). Buggie111 (talk) 03:19, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You can try the users over at the miscellaneous section of the reference desk, but you might also try tapping the specialists over at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Military history. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:37, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You might also want to try making a request at the commons. Kayau Voting IS evil 05:06, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's Kubinka Tank Museum. Maybe you can identify some of them with help from http://www.tankmuseum.ru/index_e.html, commons:Tank Museum, Kubinka, commons:Category:Tanks. PrimeHunter (talk) 08:57, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I found that (meaning Kubinka) when looking at the Maus. I'll try to do so, but it doesn't really seem like as if there is a need. Buggie111 (talk) 14:42, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

JULY 29, 2010 NOTE: To Whom It May Concern,

I am working on JoAnne's page ( joannelorenzana.com ) as I'm a friend but very new to Wikipedia and I have been allowed to work on it. In hind sight, I should have studied the steps in proceeding first (which is what I'm doing now) and should have began with the sandbox and created sippets from there. I also apply changes on her existing website, with permission. I will revise said article as soon as possible but desperate for help creating redirects to pages of reference, I will also note the web designer who created her main page for additional resource.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

    Did I do this right?

I created an article about Phạm Nguyễn Lan Phiên, which was nominated for speedy deletion. I think he might be notable and want a normal deletion discussion please. I tried to object, but was not sure how to do this. English is not my native language, that was complicated to understand for me. Did I do it right?-- Greatgreenwhale (talk) 17:17, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes you did, but to be honest I think it will be deleted. Please read our notability guidelines for articles about people. – ukexpat (talk) 17:32, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks anyway. I still think he might be notable, since he won two pretigous awards and was the youngest student ever to be accepted at a very prestiguos college, but let's see what people say in the discussion.-- Greatgreenwhale (talk) 17:36, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There won't be a discussion. It is tagged for speedy deletion, and can be deleted by an admin without discussion. If it survives review by an admin, it may be still referred to a deletion discussion at WP:AFD. See WP:DELETION for more info. – ukexpat (talk) 18:16, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

VCH - Nat. Soc. Inquiry, 1846-7 and other nonsense

    Resolved
     –  – ukexpat (talk) 18:21, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am researching Stretham education starting with Pugh (ed.) (1953) Victoria County History: Cambridgeshire Vol. IV p. 158 (via British History Online). His information is tantalising but seems incomplete so I am looking for his original sources. For example, all on page 158 ...

    • Note 25 he says "Bp.'s Mun., Ely, G 2." which according to here means The muniments of ... the Bishop as 'Bp.'s Mun.' The arrangement of the Episcopal manuscripts is described in A. Gibbons, Ely Episcopal Records. The capitular manuscripts are housed in one room but are not permanently arranged in shelves or cupboards: the numbering used here is that found on the documents when they were examined in 1949-50., so I guess I cannot access these
    • Note 26 he says "Bp.'s Mun., Ely, B 6." ibid.
    • Note 28 he says "Rep. of Nat. Soc. 1846–7 (priv. printed)". I believe from here this translates to "Result of the Returns to the General Inquiry made by the National Society, 1846-7 (1849)". When I google book search that term I get modern works such as The Census and social structure:....
    • Note 32 he says "Archives of Nat. Soc." which means what? The National Society for promoting religious education? If so, they are not digitised

I will give you my google when you take it from my cold, dead hands. In the meantime, someone more familiar with this stuff please provide some guidance (other than get another hobby!) --Senra (talk) 17:31, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Would you please clarify your question? It is not immediately clear to me what you are asking. Thanks. – ukexpat (talk) 17:34, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I am trying to find out more about the education (from as early as possible) in Stretham, Cambridgeshire. VCH is a good starting point, but does not give enough information. VCH references are obscure (to me anyway). Help me find information on education in Stretham --Senra (talk) 17:53, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Deletion of page

Did I do the right thing to propose deletion of the page Marco Carcangiu?,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 18:21, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    I think so. Mr. R00t Talk 18:23, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not so sure. Per WP:ATHLETE: Players who have appeared, and managers who have managed, in a fully-professional league (as detailed here), will generally be regarded as notable.. The question then is whether Carcangiu's club, FC Etar Veliko Tarnovo, is in a full professional league. As I don't know the answer to that, I have removed the PROD as this should be discussed at WP:AFD. – ukexpat (talk) 19:22, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Deletion of page

Also is there a page where you can report pages to be deleted more quickly?,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 18:29, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I think G3 applies better. It's listed at the admin dashboard. There's a backlog of 133 pages that need to be CSD'd right now so just be patient. Mr. R00t Talk 18:31, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
In response to your second question. Anything that an admin needs to do gets listed here. Mr. R00t Talk 18:32, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It's a badly-written two line stub, but it's about a real place (try Google) and can't be dismissed as "pure vandalism". -- John of Reading (talk) 18:49, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
It was tagged for speedy deletion [1] when you posted. Tagging places it in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion or another category for deletion. Admins monitor these categories so there is no reason to post here. It's a hidden category. I recommend you set your preferences to show hidden categories if you haven't already. Edit count

I have 323 non-deleted edits (326 including deleted), but Wikipedia says I only have 306. What is the problem?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Us441 (talkcontribs) 18:40, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are different edit counters using different rules (for example, a move may count as one or two edits) and updating at different times. I wouldn't worry about it when the difference is small. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:31, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Editing a discussion after closure

Hello - I would like to get some views on this. Obviously contributing to a discussion (for example, an AfD discussion) after it has been closed isn't allowed (nor does it make sense), but would it be appropriate to edit a discussion after it has been closed to perform "janitorial" work, more specifically signing an unsigned comment, which in this case is of the user who closed the discussion? IMO, it's all right, but I want to see what others think. Perhaps it is better to add a note regarding it around the actual discussion, or on the talk page (though at that point, if someone really wanted to see who closed the discussion, they would look at the history, not the talk page). Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 19:17, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The closure needs to be signed - so yeah, signing the closure with the unsigned template (or asking the closing admin to do so) isn't a problem. I can't think of a reason why any comments would need to be changed after the closure, though. If there is something hinky - the nominator of an AFD is a sock of the article's author trolling, for example - add a note at the bottom of the page. Is there a specific page that requires attention? UltraExactZZ Said ~ Did 19:25, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This particular MfD wasn't signed by the closing user, so I'll take care of that in a second. Nothing about odd comments or conflicts or anything like that. Thanks, ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 19:39, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    transferring edit credit

Can I request that an edit made under my username be transferred to my IP address only and no longer linked with my username account? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.50.152.36 (talk) 20:04, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    No, sorry. – ukexpat (talk) 20:08, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have never seen such a request but there are lots of requests for the opposite: Transferring from IP address to user name (which we don't do either). In certain cases an edit or it's editor can be oversighted (made invisible) but I don't know whether this is relevant for you. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:23, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Company's Marketing Manager Making updates to Page

I recently found very obvious evidence that a company's Senior Marketing Communications Manager was making updates to the company's wikipedia page. Being a naive wikipedia contributer my question is this: 1) Is it not against wikipedia terms of service to do this, in fact isn't this a very grievous break of the terms? 2) If 1 is true then, what can be done to bring attention to / revert all changes done by this person? Perhaps block editing from this company's IP address etc? Thanks, - naive user —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.88.170.40 (talk) 20:06, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's not prohibited per se, but it is strongly discouraged by WP:COI. – ukexpat (talk) 20:08, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The concern here should be the nature of the edits more than the status of the editor – are they clearly bad faith or promotional, for instance? If the user is making uncontroversial corrections, or perhaps removing unsourced contentious material then there is no problem, and in fact such edits should be welcomed, COI or otherwise. AJCham 20:15, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
See also Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations. If we looked into the case then maybe we would just inform the user of our policies. Or maybe we would do nothing if the edits are uncontroversial. It's unlikely we would jump to a block without warning first. See WP:OUTING if you consider taking this further. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:19, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Use of movereq template without subst

    Resolved
     – Thank you Fuhghettaboutit!  – OhioStandard (talk) 05:52, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! An article I've contributed to is currently the subject of a rename/move request !vote on its talk page, and I noticed the wikimarkup used to tag its talk page was {{movereq|Medical use of cannabis}} . But the top of the relevant section says,

Please do not use {{movereq}} directly on page-move requests — instead, use {{subst:move}} or {{subst:move-multi}}. This is so a permanent record of the proposed page name can be placed on the talk page.

I didn't want to change the on-page usage myself, because I didn't know if that might have unintended consequences. Will it, or ... I guess I'm not sure what to do at this point to both make sure a permanent record of the move request gets placed on the talk page once the !vote closes and to not screw things up, e.g. by effectively relisting it by changing the on-page usage to use subst. Help please?  – OhioStandard (talk) 01:56, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Everything is fine and when the move request is closed, a permanent record will be left. I can see how the language in the template would be confusing in the way you read it. It only really makes sense if you know how {{move}} and {{multi-move}} work (which may indicate that the language in the template needs to be clarified, though you are the first person I've ever seen raise this [I am a regular at WP:RM and wrote the closing instructions page, though not that template], but you also may be the first person to actually bother reading the template and notice the problem). Both of those templates place {{movereq}} with various formatting done in a certain way so that User:RM bot knows to transclude the discussion at WP:RM so that the move is listed and ultimately processed by an admin after seven days. What you are seeing on the talk page is actually the result of using {{subst:move}}, not {{movereq}} directly. I'll try to think of a way to clarify that language. BY the way, noting what you said at the move discussion, movereq is never substituted.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:54, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see! Thanks very much; I won't Fuhghettaboutit! ( How many times have you heard that, I wonder? Sorry. ) You couldn't be more clear. I'm cordially grateful for your reply, for your fine work here, and for your wikignomish work at WP:RM as well. I've modified the confused "housekeeping" comment I made at the subject !vote, based on this intelligence. Best,  – OhioStandard (talk) 05:46, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Page Deletion

I want to nominate the page Constituency PP-155 for speedy deletion but i don't know what criteria to put it under.???Gobbleswoggler (talk) 08:12, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Also what critea would you select for a place that has no notability?,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 09:06, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
By design, the Speedy deletion criteria don't cover all types of article that seem to deserve deletion. If you can't find a speedy deletion criterion for a particular article, you could propose it for deletion instead. For an overview, see Deletion policy. But note that there seems to be a long-established rule here that all inhabited places are assumed to be notable, though I can't find a policy page to back that up. -- John of Reading (talk) 12:23, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW I have asked the Pakistan WikiProject to take a look at the article. – ukexpat (talk) 14:07, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Are there notability guidelines for progidies?

I am interested in progides and would like to write a number of articles about persons would did certain things very early such as Marian Kogler, the youngest person ever to graduate from college in Austria. He was 15 when he graduated. Would that fact make him notable?-- Greatgreenwhale (talk) 09:00, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are no special guidelines for prodigies. The main guideline for establishing notability is here; someone is notable, in Wikipedia terms, if he or she has received significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of that person. If the person is still alive, then you must take extra care to avoid unsourced statements; see these extra guidelines. -- John of Reading (talk) 12:34, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    And possibly the essay at WP:UPANDCOMING. – ukexpat (talk) 13:06, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
    Thank you both :)-- Greatgreenwhale (talk) 13:26, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I may be a bit late to the party, but I'm inclined to chime in with WP:BLP1E, as well. In this case, it is surely a remarkable achievement — but not everything that gets reported in the newspaper necessarily belongs in the encyclopedia. Particularly when dealing with an article about a living subject, we have to ask ourselves if there is sufficient material available in reliable secondary sources to even construct a proper biography. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 13:34, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

<edit conflict>:The simple fact that somebody was the youngest to do this or that or the other thing, by and large does not rise to the level of notability. This is an encyclopedia, not the Guiness Book of World Records. (I will also note that such assertions are often made without any trace of evidence to back them up.) --Orange Mike | Talk 13:37, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Regardless of whether he gets an article here, Marian Kogler should become an editor on Wikipedia. A person that smart ought to easily digest our friendly manuals in no time, and then possibly improve them. --Teratornis (talk) 02:48, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Twinkle

Why is it when i edit a page using twinkle it adds the page to my watchlist?,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 09:15, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Although I don't use Twinkle, I see that it has settings that tell it to add pages to your watchlist - see the documentation sections starting with this one. -- John of Reading (talk) 12:40, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I could be wrong, but I don't believe that Twinkle is responsible for adding your edited pages to your watchlist; check the "Watchlist" section of your "My Preferences" page: at the bottom there are three checkboxes for "Add pages I edit/move/create to my watchlist". Try unchecking them and see if that does the trick (and please let me know if I'm wrong). Cheers! -- Bgpaulus (talk) 21:58, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Done, I think. There were duplicate "premierships = " parameters in the infobox; one had the named reference in, but the second one (with the list of years) was the one that the software was using. Hence, when the software was looking for a named ref later on, it didn't find it. BencherliteTalk 09:47, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Manufacturing in HK

Manufacturing in Hong Kong just went to DYK, and ever since the day I've been thinking of writing it, I've wanted to bring it to GA. But for now, I want some criticism of the article. I know it's a long way from GA. WP:FEED seems to be pre-DYK, but WP:PR seems to be pre-FA. So, what is the best way to get feedback? BTW, could anyone rate the article on the quality scale as well? (For the importance, I've picked high per WPHK's scale). Kayau Voting IS evil 11:05, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Feed/PR, either one is great for feedback. Seeing the work already done on the article, I'll recommend WP:PR. Leave a note for rating the article there.59.161.101.203 (talk) 16:43, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I've been monitoring recent changes and this user [3] has made a number of changes to pages on Chinese Christianity. I've reverted some of them due to lack of sourcing but the number of changes is growing, particularly the addition of lots of citation needed templates. Just asking for help on what to do, I have stopped simply reverting the changes as they might be being made in good faith, but made incorrectly. Page Deletion ???

The page Matt Henshaw has been repeatedly deleted. It should exist as a stub. There seems to be some question over the notability of past articles but present articles show an artist in the ascendancy. The page should exist if only as a stub. Problems with an article nontheism, the "word", and an AfD

The article nontheism recently was decided as a "keep" per an AfD. The closing admin commented, "However, this result was so tainted by canvassing that it should not prejudice a fresh AFD free of such activity." I did not count but about 60 members of one group were notified against WP guidelines. This was referenced in the AfD discussion, I made reference, and also concerns of many instances where the "word" was being used in articles, specifically titles, and an article was re-directed to "nontheism. I was even accused, and had to defend accusations of bullying for bringing these concerns up.

While the debate was on-going I did exhaustive research, and concluded, also considering WP:Wikipedia is not a dictionary and certain source exceptions, that this is "not" a word. This included following links on the article and searching dictionaries. Before I could make further comments the AfD was closed.
I have grave concerns considering what has transpired, that an article on WP has a title that is not a word, that there are many other instances of this, that an established article had been re-directed to one of these titles (a revert was changed) but thus far a move back has remained, and that I feel there is most assuredly a pattern of using Wikipedia to establish a new word and (possibly) to further an agenda. If I nominate for AfD again I would deem it necessary to seek a block on those on the "list" that was brought to light on the AfD. This is over my head, I feel that just doing nothing would be paramount to catastrophe concerning Wikipedia. I am not a "champion of causes" but feel when something is wrong it is wrong. In continuing with this I certainly "must" take into account (as I am not naive) that (even if only remotely possible), there could be retributions, since there is a list of some 60 editors involved in the use of the word in one way or the other. I must weigh doing what I think is right against possibly falling in a hole. The problem I have is what is a next step? Otr500 (talk) 14:39, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Open a fresh AfD. Go by consensus. Continue discussing on the talk page of the article with your concerns. Do not ignore all rules in this case.59.161.101.203 (talk) 16:29, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Sandpit (disambiguation)

There is an article about Sandpit (horse) that is not accessible in the normal way. When you type "Sandpit", you are routed to a page on sandpit (as in a sandbox children play in) - and the disambiguation link looks up "Sandbox" which is not the name of the horse.

In other words, to find Sandpit (horse) you need to type Sandpit (horse) - you can not navigate to it via the standard disambiguation method of typing Sandpit. This is because the Sandpit (horse) article is relatively new - basically the links need to change to account for this.

    Wikipedia arbitrage guidelines

    Hello help desk,

I am looking for all guidelines on arbitrage because I would like to make referrals to the western criminal justice system when it comes to self-defense. Most wikipedia arguments come down to a sense of losing face or an argument, so often foul remarks are replied to in a foul way. It also happens only too often that the person defending him- or herself gets punished and the first offender gets away, followed a comment of an admin telling everybody to shut up about it. This is what is called catch 22. It is a situation created to make sure a person cannot defend him- or herself. There are laws against this and I think the wikipedia should try to reflect this more in its arbitrage system. To every case there are three sides after all and self defense is something that I would want everybody to be able to act on. --Faust (talk) 18:53, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You mean arbitration per WP:ARBITRATION or dispute resolution in general per WP:Dispute resolution? But bear in mind that Wikipedia is not a democracy and there is no right of free speech here. – ukexpat (talk) 19:00, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A while ago, I uploaded Image:20 forthlin road.jpg. The image was fine, low quality but had high EV. A while ago, for some reason, a user 'rotated and fixed' the image. The image to me looks stupidly blurry now, and it was much better previously. However, the image seems to have been lost in history, and due to me only starting editing properly again recently, I have no clue where to look to get it back. Is there any way to get it back to its original form? -- Jack?! 21:48, 27 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Take this with a grain of salt, since this is from memory, but I believe since all this happened in 2007-8, your version is gone; when the file was deleted because the new version was on Commons, the ability to retrieve the file is gone (the software has changed, and this is no longer the case). You can re-upload your version (at Commons, if it's got a free license) if you still have it. --Floquenbeam (talk) 00:27, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

     – {{uw-lblock}}115.117.157.39 (talk) 15:47, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am very upset about wrong and misleading information being carried on your page describing the Comunidades of Goa, India.

Some frivolous statements about the real nature of these heritage institutions and some factually incorrect information is being displayed on the main page uplaoded by Deepak D'Souza.

I am a journalist, a gaunkar of the Comunidade of Serula, and a member of the Association of Components of Comunidades the umbrella organisation that represents the Comunidades and all their members in different forms of participation.

I produced a printed copy of your page before the General Secretary of the ACC Adv Andre Pereira (LLM) who is an authority on the subject and he was very upset.

Merely picking material out of books written by purpotted historians on the subject does not justify the editor's authenticity. We have been engaged in deep research on the topic and found that many things mentioned by some historians are factually incorrect or not applicable to all 223 Comunidades in Goa.

These bodies are village republics having their own laws and governed in general by the Code of Comunidades.

The correct version that I had uplaoded was removed by Deepak D'Souza and replaced with his erronous version.

If I donot receive response from your website I will publish this finding in the media, as also seek legal redressal, as it is damaging our cause and fight for justice.

    The "Laszlo Garai" case

    Background

I would ask a favour: let me understand whether the English Wikipedia is or is not interested in getting information also from non-English (e.g. Hungarian) sources. I mean, of course, reliable, trustworthy sources (such as, e.g., the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. If your answer to my question will be negative, I shall by no means insist on writing for the English Wikipedia further articles about Hungarian scholars. The matter is that I have two rather time-consuming pastimes: I am the research-manager of a large EU university department and I am writing a rather sizeable book on the scientific work of the outstanding Hungarian psychologist Laszlo Garai. As a matter of fact, this work of mine gave me the idea of presenting some elements of my findings in the English Wikipedia.

But in case you happen to think that these Wikipedia texts of mine has been of any use for your readers I would ask another favour: Please, investigate about the real motive for a serial deletion-destruction JzG has committed with all my texts wherever he found it in the Wikipedia- End if you find (as I concluded to) that s/he has nothing but some mean motivation for it, goive me, please, some safe, secure protection against it. And immediately delete, please, humiliating nonsense, JzG inserted to the starting point of the Garai Laszlo texte. Of course, I keep accepting all intelligible criticisme to my Wikipedia-texts.

Thanks! Szalagloria (talk) 08:47, 13 June 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia is based on reliable sources. Wikipedia articles (like scientific papers) need to have precise citations of reliable sources such that other editors can verify them. This is especially important with biographies of living persons such as Garai Laszlo; the sources need to be independent of him and his department. If you are writing a book on this topic, you will already know how to give precise bibliographic citations, and this is what you need to do here. Once you have properly footnoted the information about Garai, and as long as your footnotes demonstrate, from independent sources, that his work is notable, there will be no need for the template at the top of the page. Thank you for your comments. My problem has been (and still is) as follows. As you may see, my article about LG has precise citations but whether the sources are "reliable sources such that other editors can verify them", I maysay so, but only in principles: for that verifiability editors in question ought to understand Hungarian. It's no use three volumes of Laszlo Garai having been published by the Academic Press, two monographs by the editing house of two bigest Hungarian University Press and so on for five other volumes, they are published in Hungarian. Itz is why I have been driven to despair when I wrote the above cry for help. Szalagloria (talk) 06:08, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

You need to focus on giving true, precise citations. For example: you cite a book which you call "Personality dynamics and social existence" and you say that the publisher is "Academic Press". This seems to me completely wrong. The book's title is, I think, "Személyiségdinamika és társadalmi lét". You need to give that title (and then, if you like, an English translation afterwards). Also, the publisher is "Akadémiai Kiadó". This is a famous academic publisher in Budapest. You should not try to translate the name: it is not the same as "Academic Press", which is a British and US publisher. Also, you have not given the date of publication. What all this means is that you are not giving correct citations, and other editors find it difficult to verify your statements. Andrew Dalby 12:23, 15 June 2010 (UTC)
It is excellent! So you do understand Hungarian: otherwise you would not have been able to reproduce correctly Hungarian diacritical marks. And if it is so you would be the very third party editor, who could eastablish whether it is or isn't by any chance a mistake to declare the WP-article about the topic as being inappropriate for inclusion and destroy it repeatedly. If it is true, that
    1., LG in 1969 in the volume you mentionned("Személyiségdinamika és társadalmi lét") presented his hypothesis of Specifically human basic need and the Akadémiai Kiadó immediately published it;
2., the reputed interdisciplinary review of Hung. Ac. Sc. "Magyar Tudomány" published a rather voluminous paper of the same author re-visiting his hypothesis 40 years later. --Szalagloria (talk) 22:43, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your critical remark about the mode I identified the Hungarian sources I referred to. I ignored the rule you indicate now and took the rule operative in my French acadenic world instead. In the nearest future I shall correct in this Garai-biography fault of mine. But at the same time I shall stop all further activity since I have taken into account that Hungarian sources for scientific discoveries are not considered interesting for the readers of English WP (should it be otherwise the abstracts I specially redacted from the Hungarian texts of LG would not be repeatedly deleted). Still I would have a respectfull petition: delete the starting framed remark about the established or not established notability of LG: this remark is humiliating not me but a respected (everywhere outside the English community of WP editors) scholar (see e.g.http://en.academic.ru/dic.nsf/enwiki/4974859). Szalagloria (talk) 22:43, 16 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think I can help you, because I don't know the subject area of psychology, and I didn't study the reasons why the template was placed there. But you are mistaken in believing that a notability template is humiliating: it is placed on an encyclopedia page, and the page cannot be humiliated. It is not a message to the subject -- he is not involved here at all. It is a plea to all editors (not just you) that the page needs accurate citations from independent sources, showing that the subject or his work is notable.
Wikipedians have many mother tongues -- there are many other Hungarian contributors, and there are thousands of biographies of Hungarians. You have had problems not because Laszlo Garai is Hungarian, but because you, personally, are very closely involved in his work. If you want to work on an encyclopedia, it's better to write about topics in which you are not emotionally involved. Andrew Dalby 09:14, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I am very-very thankful to you for your unquestionable, manifest benevolence. However I am presenting now the earnest request to delete comptely and definitely my "Laszlo Garai" article. You definitely convinced me not that, as you put it, you could not "help me", but that nobody can from the English community of WP editors. You can't help me, you argue, "because I don't know the subject area of psychology" and it is a difficulty indeed. On the other hand, you console me, that "there are many other Hungarian contributors" and it is true. But we would need 1., Hungarian contributors 2., knowing the subject area of psychology, and 3., on top of everything, who could write English texts. Am I wrong?

Well, here am I, one who might satisfy this triple condition. Thus I specially redacted from the Hungarian texts of LG containing his scientific discoveries English abstracts for the non-Hungarian-speaking readers, including redactors who nothing but from these (mainly Hungarian academic!) sources could judge whether he is or isn't sufficiantly notable. Well, these souces has been completely destroyed and then the article got prefaced by the (I have to insiste on this point) humiliating template: "Please help to establish notability by adding reliable, secondary sources about the topic. If notability cannot be established, the article is likely to be merged, redirected, or deleted."

    Isn't it funny?

Well, as you may have noticed, I have put a lot of work into this page. It was never your page -- material submitted to Wikipedia is free for others to use and improve -- and, having worked on it, I disagree with you that it should be deleted. I think he is notable by Wikipedia definition. I'm sorry if you won't help me to find a secondary source on his work. I'll just have to try to find one myself. Andrew Dalby 09:31, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Now, let us take as an exemple the case of "Specifically human basic need". Prof. Garai presented it in 1960's. From 1962 to 1968 he published 6 papers in two journals of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, in 1968 he defended his kandidate's thesis that was published by the Akadémiai Kiadó [Academic Press]. Meanwhile the hypotheses was published by a French, a Spanish and two Russian scientific journals. The European Journal of Social Psychology published its longest ever book review on the book in question (F. Eros: "'Personality Dynamics and Social Existence', by L. Garai". 1974/3. 369-379.) For these and more details see Need for freedom, Specifically Human Basic Need (SHBN)

On one hand. On the other: it got deleted. Wikipedia is based on reliable sources, isn't it? Well then: I am asking humbly, delete "Laszlo Garai" as well. By no means I allow present my text mutilated. I would do the deletion by myself but my texte used to be linked to so many other textes and I don't know, how to eradicate all of them.—Preceding unsigned comment added by Szalagloria (talkcontribs) 12:04, 28 July 2010

Actually you did allow your text to be "mutilated". When you submitted the text you agreed to license it under the CC-BY-SA 3.0 and GFDL, and that license cannot be revoked. As there have been other contributors to this article it cannot be deleted merely at your request. AJCham 12:32, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Twice recently I created a page and was told it was not noteworthy enough to be published. The article I was trying to create is titled Danny Balin. It has been taken down twice. I don't understand why this is when I see pages like these three published. The information in my article was more impressive than these three. Query

I would like to have my son, as a community service write a page out our town's local boy scout troop. I would like to have him write it so other people can learn more about the troop and its history. I think such a page would be very useful to people considering what troop to joins, especially folks with small children. Is this possible? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bradturano (talkcontribs) 16:16, 28 July 2010 (UTC) 16:18, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Make sure your son reads the following pages before writing the page.

On your own website, sure, go right ahead. On Wikipedia, probably not. We only cover topics here that have already gotten significant coverage in other sources. Friday (talk) 16:22, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Before writing an article, please read our information on what makes a group notable enough to warrant an article. It is unlikely that your local troop will meet these criteria. However, there are other websites similar to Wikipedia where you post the article. If you have questions, please feel free to repost here. TNXMan 16:23, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Equation Alignment

When adding equations using the "math" hypertest, is it possible to align all the equations on a page? I would like the equal signs on all the equations to be in one, straight, vertical line. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hh73wiki (talkcontribs) 17:44, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Presumably, you are referring to math hypertext and not hypertest. Depending upon the article and the editorial readability required, you could mix and match tables for such equations. In case you are conversant with direct <math></math> usage, then <blockquotes></blockquotes> could also provide you the intended result. Four quick good reads would be Help:Wiki markup#Special characters (scroll down to the section on 'Mathematical Characters'), Wikipedia:WikiProject Mathematics, Help:Displaying a formula, Template:Math.115.117.157.39 (talk) 18:41, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Reading of Divine Comedy

My name is Iacopo Vettori. In 1984 / 1985 I studied as actor in Vittorio Gassman school. Now I work as a programmer, but I have some activity as poem reader (see at http://www.ilnarratore.com/autori/idx/169/Vettori-Iacopo.html) I realize as amateur a full reading of the Divine Comedy, all for my own, with professional quality, and I have choiced to share it with CC BY-NC-SA 3.0 I am aware that it would be seen as personal promotion, but actually is the free sharing of a valuable work. I read the texts in the link of the triggered filter, and I found my intent is right. If there is something I have to modify before to add the link to my web page in the Divine Comedy voice, I will be glad to do it. Sincerely Iacopo Vettori —Preceding unsigned comment added by Iacopovettori (talkcontribs) 22:13, 28 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To be honest, I'm not sure what you are asking. However, if you would like to add a piece of work, you may, as long as it is notable. This is generally frowned upon though, as it usually doesn't follow the conflict of interest policy. Wikipedia View

Is there any way to change the background color of Wikipedia so that the background is black and the text is white when I view an article or other page? I would prefer viewing it that way, and I couldn't find any way to change it myself, so I thought I'd ask here. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.53.111.116 (talk) 03:35, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If you are using the Monobook skin, you can go to your preference → Gadgets → User interface gadgets → click "Use a black background with green text on the Monobook skin." Otherwise, you can change this in most browsers. In Firefox, go to Tools → Options → Content → Colors, then change the text to white and the background to black, and take the checkmarks out of both boxes below on that screen. Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:51, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I just realized, you can't be using the Monobook since you are not logged in so ignore that, unless you want to sign up for an account (which has many benefits). Monobook is a few hundred times better than the new crappy Vector skin in my opinion.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:58, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Even without creating an account, you can change the background colour directly through most internet browsers (including Explorer, Firefox, using the Options/Tools link). You cannot do that in Google Chrome directly (For Chrome, which you'll be more interested in, click on the 'wrench' on the menu bar, click on Options next, click then on 'Personal Stuff', then on 'Get Themes'. Choose any theme whose background you prefer; and set it. You should be fine after that.).115.117.149.250 (talk) 04:07, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

    Is this allowed?

There is a wikilink in the Virgin Racing article, referring to the Russian car company Marussia. The link, [[:ru:Marussia|Marussia]], leads to the Russian wikipedia.--The Three Headed Knight (talk) 04:03, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know if it's specifically disallowed in any policy, but it's a bad idea in my opinion because if it was linked regularly it would make a red link which then informs everyone who knows what that means that there is a hole there, that an article needs to be created (of course this should only be done for notable things, but I don't see that as a concern here). By linking to the Russian article, we fool anyone who doesn't follow the link into thinking that an article here exists when it does not, thus inhibiting the likelihood of creation. Also, I don't see much utility in shunting English speaking users to a page written in any language the vast majority finding themselves there will not know.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:10, 29 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
