MDNA[1][2] (a pseudo-blend of "Madonna")[3] is the upcoming twelfth studio album by American singer Madonna, set to be released on March 26, 2012.[1] When released, it will be her debut release from her 360 deal with Live Nation Entertainment in partnership with Interscope Records. It will also be Madonna's first album not to be associated with Warner Bros. Records, the label she was signed to since 1982.[4] The first single to be released from the album, "Give Me All Your Luvin'" (featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.) was released on February 3, 2012.[1]

Background

In December 2010 Madonna posted a message on her Facebook exclaiming: "Its official! I need to move. I need to sweat. I need to make new music! Music I can dance to. I'm on the lookout for the maddest, sickest, most badass people to collaborate with. I'm just saying [...]."[5] On July 4, 2011, Madonna's manager Guy Oseary, announced that Madonna entered the studio to begin the recording sessions for her twelfth studio album.[6] On December 15, 2011, Madonna announced that the album will be released in the spring of 2012 and it will be her debut release from her 360 deal with Live Nation Entertainment which was signed in 2007. Through this contract, Madonna and Live Nation signed a three-album deal with Interscope Records, who will market and distribute the album.[4][7] In the 2011 year-end readers poll by Billboard, it was voted as the most anticipated album of 2012.[8]

In an interview with Channel V Australia, Martin Solveig commented on Madonna's involvement in the production of the album: "She is as involved as you can be in the recording process. This was a very good and big surprise for me! I was assuming that she would spend only an hour or two in the studio per day and come and see where we were and say, "Ok I like this, I don't like that. I'll sing this. Bye!" And absolutely not... I mean we co-produced the track and it’s not just written on the credits "co-produced by Martin Solveig and Madonna", we literally co-produced the tracks. I mean, at some point she wanted to choose the sound of a snare drum or a synth and that kind of stuff. She was really in the session!"[9]

On February 4, 2012 there had been a mild controversy surrounding the song "Girls Gone Wild". Joe Francis, known for his franchise with the same name, threatened to sue Madonna if she sang the song during her performance at the Superbowl XLVI.[10] The claims between the song and the franchise was that she had apparently ""violated Federal and State trademark laws by making unauthorized use of Mr. Francis' trademark Girls Gone Wild in not only the title, but subject line of her various advertisements in order to lure potential consumers to purchase her latest musical effort."[11][12] But it was announced by NFL that the song would not be performed at the Superbowl.[13]

Titling and artwork

The album's title was announced by Madonna during an interview on The Graham Norton Show on January 11, 2012.[14] When asked about the title's meaning at the W.E. film premiere, she said: "Madonna... I just liked the play on words... It's a triple entendre."[3] The title of the album was condemned by Lucy Dawe, a spokesperson for the anti-drugs campaign group Cannabis Skunk Sense. She told The Sun newspaper that Madonna's choice of album title was "an ill advised decision" as it makes reference to MDMA, the correct name for the class-A drug "Ecstacy".[15] The album's artwork was shot by Mert and Marcus and directed by Giovanni Bianco.[16]

Commercial performance

On February 3, 2012, the deluxe edition of MDNA was available as pre-order exclusively on iTunes Store in 51 countries worldwide. It topped the iTunes charts in 49 countries within 12 hours.[17]

Singles

"Give Me All Your Luvin'" was released as the first single from the album on February 3, 2012.[1] Two snippets of a demo titled "Give Me All Your Love" leaked on November 8, 2011.[18] Later that day, the entire demo of the song, as "Give Me All Your Love," was leaked onto the Internet.[19] According to Billboard: "Within a few hours, it was among one of the top 10 trending topics worldwide on Twitter."[19] After the release of the demo, Madonna's manager, Guy Oseary, wrote on Twitter, "The plan was for new music to come out in the new year. I'm very happy with the positive reaction to the demo, but we are very upset with whoever leaked the song!!!!!!!! we are asking that the fans please help us police any more leaks. we have a lot in store for you. but please respect the process."[20][21]

Promotion

The National Football League (NFL) confirmed that Madonna will perform at the Super Bowl XLVI during the Bridgestone Halftime Show to be broadcast on NBC on February 5, 2012, from Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The show was visualized by Cirque Du Soleil and Jamie King.[22][23] Madonna performed a medley of "Vogue", "Music", "Give Me All Your Luvin'", "Open Your Heart", "Express Yourself" and "Like a Prayer".[24]
