I'm confused...

I did sign my comments...and did you not notice that I have a very long edit history(over 500 edits)? I don't really need any help finding my way around wikipedia man...but thanks. Aar☢n BruceTalk/Contribs 03:27, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'm also a bit confused...

Hi. Thanks for the kind message on my talk page, but I wasn't the admin who blocked User:Fuckwikipedia: they were blocked in 2005 by another admin, so I'm a bit confused as to what your message is referring to. -- The Anome (talk) 10:35, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My bad! Jayemd (talk) 20:51, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cautions...

stop First, you are absolutely not allowed to change other peoples' comments on your talk page or any other talk page, as you did to my comments here. Refactoring is a huge no-no. Also, your comments here and here are personal attacks; the civility policy applies to interactions with blocked and banned users just as much as it does with active ones, and further comments by yourself like those could well lead to your being blocked. - The Bushranger One ping only 18:24, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Self-awarded barnstars and misleading edits on talk page

This diff seems to suggest that you have awarded yourself a number of barnstars, signing them as if they were contributed by other editors. Please do not do this: it creates a misleading impression, and does not advance the encylopedic mission of Wikipedia, and is potentially disruptive.

Edits like this one also create a misleading impression of your activities on Wikipedia. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia project, not a role-playing game, and this kind of activity is disruptive. Please do not refactor any more comments on your talk page, or create any more messages purporting to be from other users.

I see you've been warned about this before, and chose to erase the warning, and turn it into a note of praise for yourself. Please do not do this again: you are likely to find yourself being blocked from editing if this behavior is repeated.

You are still completely welcome to continue to make positive contributions to Wikipedia; just please stop with the game-playing. -- The Anome (talk) 20:04, 17 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your edits to Template:WWE Hall of Fame

Please stop making test edits to Wikipedia, as you did to Template:WWE Hall of Fame. It is considered vandalism, which, under Wikipedia policy, can lead to a loss of editing privileges. If you would like to experiment again, please use the sandbox. TJ Spyke 22:47, 26 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Their birth names are not needed or required, and all they do is add a redirect (i.e. the article on Shawn Michaels is at Shawn Michaels, not "Michael Hickenbottom"). You know what? Let's just forget this conversation and start clean. Jayemd (talk) 14:15, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't remove them from election templates - these are eligible for inclusion as redlinks per WP:REDNOT, specifically:

Red links are generally not included in either See also sections nor in navigational boxes, nor linked to through templates such as {Main} or {Further}, since these navigation aids are intended to help readers find existing articles. An exception is red links in navboxes where the red-linked articles are part of a series or a whole set, e.g. a navbox listing successive elections, referendums, presidents, sports league seasons, etc.

Your edits to Template:The Verve

This is your only warning; if you vandalize Wikipedia again, as you did at Template:The Verve, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. Wyatt Riot (talk) 16:58, 28 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As others have asked, please stop indiscriminately removing red links. Our editing guidelines on redlinks are quite clear: they are (mostly) good and they help us build the encyclopedia. Removing them only makes more work for others in the future, after the article is eventually created and we have to add those links back. Of course, not all redlinks are desireable—obviously non-notable links should be removed—but you are also removing perfectly legitimate links and, in some cases, accidentally deleting othercontent which others then have to fix. For example:

I have reverted or corrected all of these edits. I would suggested reading through WP:REDLINK as well as our other policies and guidelines, especially WP:V as the vast majority of your additions don't include references. We were all new once, so don't let the rules get you down, but we all need to edit in ways that allow the encyclopedia to grow and don't create unnecessary work for others. Cheers! Hi Jayemd!

I notice you've got into a bit of a problem, and I appreciate you're possibly feeling a bit out of your depth with it. While you're thinking about it, take a read of this and see if it helps you along. That page is still a Work In Progress, far from finished yet, but it has some starters. The article Graham Leigh has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, all newly created biographies of living persons must have at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the prod blp tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. Note: I've also added the following:

Amfoot-bio-stub

... to those articles. These tags show that the article is a "stub" article (which needs to be expanded by someone) and that it's in the category "American football". Add those to any other American football payer articles which you do, as well as a reference. It all helps. Pesky (talk) 13:50, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Some tips which might help you out

Hi Jayemd, I thought I'd drop a few notes on your talk page with some help on writing articles :o)

First of all, it may be best for you to do a bit of reading, starting with the Wikipedia manual of style, which will give you a lot of information about how Wikipedia prefers its articles to be written. It's not as hard to follow as it might look; quite a bit of the information there probably won't be vital for you at first.

Second, I recommend you make a user sandbox - which is just an area you can use to practise in, and to make notes in, and to get things ready in. If you click this red link: user:Jayemd/Sandbox, that will let you create that page (it gives you an edit window to start work in). Anything, anywhere, on the help and information pages which gives you an example, try it out in your sandbox until you're familiar with it.

For your article, the next thing you want to do is start collecting as much information as you can about it. Google searches (particularly in Books and Scholar) will be your best friend for this! Once you've found the information, the next most important thing is to start writing up each fact in your own words (very important, this), and make a note at the same time of exactly where that information came from. Build in the references as you go along; I'm going to copy in, down below this, a whole heap of help on doing references, which was produced by one of our best teachers (Chzz).

Here's another place that you'll find incredibly useful - citation templates which you can copy and paste into your sandbox, between tags; you just fill in the blanks from your sources into the template, and you'll end up with nicely formatted inline citations :o) It all helps. Remember to add a references section to your sandbox (make a new line, and put ==References== on it, and type reflist on the next line, so that you can see how your citations look as you do them. Remember to save your page often! You don't want to lose your work.

Hopefully this will give you a good start and make life easier for you.

One last thing to keep as a motto: "It's better to write one good, well-referenced, nicely-presented article than it is to create fifty unreferenced one-line stubs!"

Tips on referencing

There are lots of ways to do this, some are simple, some more complex.

Personally, I like using citation templates, and fill in as much as I possibly can; maybe a bit more work, but I think it looks better. You have a . An example usage is;

For all the possible things to include, see Template:Citation

Of course, you don't have to put everything in, just whatever you can. The above example is a book, but I've included a 'convenience link' to a website that displays it.

Then, at the end of the document (but before any 'category' tags), you need a references section. You just put,

References
reflist

Hard work? - help is at hand. There are lots of tools that create cite tags automagically.

I also recommend you look at other articles and copy from them - especially featured articles, which should have good refs.

Hope this helps!

Here's a little bit of magic which can save you an awful lot of time and effort!

You might want to consider using this tool - (tools:~dispenser/cgi-bin/webreflinks.py) - it makes your life a whole heap easier, by filling in complete citation templates for your links. All you do is install the script on Special:MyPage/common.js, or Special:MyPage/vector.js, or Special:MyPage/monobook.js, and then paste the bare url (without [...] brackets) between your tabs, and you'll find a clickable link called Reflinks in your toolbox section of the page (probably in the left hand column). Then click that tool. It does all the rest of the work (provided that you remember to save the page!) It doesn't work for everything (particularly often not for pdf documents), but for pretty much anything ending in "htm" or "html" (and with a title) it will do really, really well all by itself. For those it can't do by itself, it gives you a pull-down (or up) menu of templates to choose from, which you can then fill in manually. Often the problem is "No title found" - sometimes the title is obvious (especially if it's a pdf), but, if not, just open the page yourself and choose something appropriate if there's not already a clear title there. Happy editing! Pesky (talk) 12:51, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mentoring

Hi,
Over on the AN/I thread, mentoring has been proposed. How would you feel about this? bobrayner (talk) 13:33, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fine. --Jayemd (talk) 04:20, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK.
En.wikipedia is a big, complex ecosystem. Some people spend all their time fixing typos, or improving categorisation, or watching recent changes for vandalism, or writing new content on some particular topic, or commenting on deletion discussions... or a hundred other things. It looks like you've tried a few of these things, and some have worked better than others, so far. One thing I'd advise against is getting involved in drama (in particular, AN/I is half courtroom and half bar-brawl; getting tangled up in that is probably not a good step right now). If you try to take on everything at once then you'll get stressed and others will get irritated - that doesn't benefit anyone. Personally, I started out fixing vandalism, then after a few months content-building seemed less daunting so I worked on that, then (after learning a lot more written and unwritten rules) I added some work around disputes and neutrality problems.
I'm not going to say "You may only do X, not Y" but every editor's skills are better suited to (and they get more enjoyment from) some areas rather than others. Take a step back and ask yourself: What kind of work would you most enjoy here, right now? It looks like you've done some work on wrestling and other sports, so perhaps expanding sports articles would be a good thing to focus on? Alternatively, writing completely new articles is difficult at first (as you've found), but after you've learned the first few lessons it gets a lot easier. Or maybe you'd prefer to spend more time on fixing errors, or something like that? bobrayner (talk) 12:26, 1 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Any thoughts? Well, whichever direction you decide to go in, this is a really good move. bobrayner (talk) 09:36, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Friendly note

Hi Jayemd, it might not be the best time for you to involve yourself in ANI threads that do not directly involve you. What would be useful is for you to respond to the ANI thread that is about you. Are you amenable to being mentored by Bobrayner? LadyofShalott 14:30, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I'd agree with that. Whether or not mentoring works out, improving articles is the best way forward, rather than getting entangled in more backroom drama. bobrayner (talk) 14:48, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The Drahmaz Boards are not a good place to hang out! Get yourself really proficient in the nuts and bolts of editing, find your way around being an editor first. And learn all the stuff as fast as you can! (Yes, that's a challenge! I've seen how much you can learn about things that you're interested in.) Stay out of talk areas (apart from article talk and user talk) apart from "lurking". You can learn a lot by lurking; you can get hurt / upset (or snapped at) by getting involved unless the thread is about you. Pesky (talk) 14:54, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Here's a hint: Sources are your best friend.
I've just made a start on Corte McGuffey and Gene93k has done the same with Darnell McDonald (American football) - would you like to take the baton? bobrayner (talk) 17:15, 31 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Jayemd! Just a thought; it seems that there may possibly be some query as to XFL's standing (was it major enough? kind of thing). That being the case, why not find out what those players did next? It's likely that many (if not all) would have moved on to play with a team which definitely is on the right side of the borderline, in which case you'd have no trouble with the notability thing. Just one more sentence or phrase (properly sourced!) would be enough. Example: "Player X was a defensive end in Y-club in the XFL, and then went on to play for Z-Club in [insert big-league]." That would be enough of a claim to notability to get over that little glitch. Best idea, really, is to see if you can find out a little bit more about the subject of each article, and get that included right from the start to avoid getting all those horrible bitey tags! Better late than never!

Hey, Jayemd, I see that you're having a few issues with editing: may I suggest dropping by the Teahouse if you have any questions? It's a great place for users (new or not-so-new) to get advice and answers in a friendly, relaxed environment. You're more than welcome to sign up as a guest if you want to, but you don't have to do that to use the Teahouse! Thanks, and I hope to see you there!

We have this cool invitation template too; I wanted to write you a more personal note, but I personally think it's pretty awesome, so I'll put it here anyway. Check it out:

The article Charles Puleri has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references.

Reference tool

Hi Jaye - adding and formatting references can be tricky to get the hang of, but it is important to include them, particularly in biographical articles. A handy tool is Reflinks, which will format bare urls for you. pablo 13:49, 2 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Templates

Hi,

 • When you put someting inside curly brackets, that's a template. Wikipedia will try to include a copy of the template in the page that you edited. For instance, if you put to an article, it adds a copy of the little box at the right to the article. The normal way to do this is called "transclusion", and each time the template is updated, subsequent viewers of the article will see the updated version. Templates are very useful for stuff which is going to be reused across many different pages. On sports pages you might see some templates which have a list of related events / teams / athletes.
 • One common way to cite sources is with specialised citation templates citation template such as cite web. The curly brackets are there because it's a template, not because curly brackets are anything special to do with citations.
 • So, alas, this just made a funny little red link in the references section of the article (it's a red link because there's no template called "Venis-Chyna" &c). Citing sources is a really positive step, but sadly it's easy to get some of the esoteric markup wrong on the first attempt. If you wanted to cite that match as a source, it would work a little differently. Also, please be careful about using primary sources. bobrayner (talk) 09:45, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

CVU

Hey there Dr. Jaye ! I noticed you've just signed up for the CVU, welcome aboard! I was wondering if you'd be interested in participating in the CVU Academy. The idea of The Academy is to take energetic new counter-vandals and show them the way we handle Vandalism. It seems like you're the perfect candidate, if you ask me. Achowat (talk) 16:19, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I'd really like to take on a Mentoring role with you (seeing as we have roughly the same interests). I've been around the WikiBlock for a little while, and I think you might really benefit from it. Achowat (talk) 18:48, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok --Jayemd (talk) 23:57, 3 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So it looks like you've been approved for the Academy and that I'm going to be your Instructor. So let's hit the ground running, shall we? The first thing to talk about is the 4 Steps of Countering Vandalism. They are (in order) 1. Identify Vandalism 2. Restore the clean version 3. Warn the user that the edits are considered vandalism 4. Report the vandal (if necessary). You should read over WP:VAND, WP:REVERT, WP:WARN, and WP:GAIV and let me know if you have any questions. Achowat (talk) 03:27, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I've already excerised all of those steps (except for the last one because it wasn't neccessary) but I'd be glad to go through this. Jayemd (talk) 17:23, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So, just let me know when you've read those 4 pages and if you have any questions concerning them. Achowat (talk) 14:08, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
