After extensively going back and forth of the long-term History of edits to this article, I am not quite convinced that the 3 main editors now (Fordx12, Ajaxfiore and RidjalA) are 3 unique unconnected individuals (or even 2 individuals). There has been regular section blanking, a 90 day semi-protection of the page in Apr. 2012, creation of many single day redline users accounts etc. activation of sleeper accounts etc and all the usual Good-Hand/Bad-Hand stuff. Can you also give it an experienced once over. RobertRosen (talk) 19:19, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Giovanni Giovenale Ancina
Hallo John,
I come from Italian Wilkipedia. I noted that in English Wikipedia exists the page of an Italian composer of the late Renaissance, John Juvenal Ancina (redirect from Giovanni Giovenale Ancina). This seems me quite strange because all artists sorts with their original name (in 'Oxford Music Online' too). What do you think about this? Thank you very much and best regards. AFT5 newsletter

Hey again all :). So, some big news, some small news, some good news, some bad news!

On the "big news" front; we've now deployed AFT5 on to 10 percent of articles, This is pretty awesome :). On the "bad news", however, it looks like we're having to stop at 10 percent until around September - there are scaling issues that make it dangerous to deploy wider. Happily, our awesome features engineering team is looking into them as we speak, and I'm optimistic that the issues will be resolved.

For both "small" and "good" news; we've got another office hours session. This one is tomorrow, at 22:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office connect - I appreciate it's a bit late for Europeans, but I wanted to juggle it so US east coasters could attend if they wanted :). Hope to see you all there!

Church of the month

Contest of the month
We currently have a remarkable lack of Wikipedia:Wikipedia-Books. Right now, Category:Wikipedia books on Christianity contains only 12 books. We certainly could have at least one book on each major grouping within Christianity. One of the challenges for this month, then, is working to put together books on relevant topics. For this month, one contest is for editors to assemble the basic Wikipedia books for each of the main topics of the extant related projects. When finished, they should their creation of the books at the main Christianity noticeboard, and at the end of the month the project will award barnstars to those who have made a significant efforts in developing this underdeveloped content.

Also this month, we are going to have have a challenge to create and improve some of our more important missing or low-quality articles. As biographies are often a bit easier, this month we are choosing two biographies: Karl Behm, which has yet to be started, and the currently Stub-class article Nerses IV the Gracious. A barnstar will be awarded to any editor who can get these articles up to DYK quality level and ultimately selected for the DYK section of the main page.

Calendar
Thie coming month (mid-August through mid-September) includes feasts dedicated to the honor of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Bartholomew the Apostle, Nativity of Mary, and the Exaltation of the Cross.

Featured content and GA report
Since the last report, William de Chesney (sheriff), Knights of Columbus, and Angelus Silesius were promoted to GA level. Our thanks and congratulations to all those involved.

Wikimedia Foundation report

Wikinews is our sister site for developing news stories. Several events relating to Christianity, like the installation of bishops for instance, do not necessarily merit extensive coverage in wikipedia encyclopedic articles, but can and easily could be covered at greater length in a news article format. Given the number of significant news events that relate to religion, including claims of miracles, assignment of bishops and other religious leaders, church conferences, and other events, this site provides an excellent opportunity to provide in-depth coverage of current events at greater length than wikipedia.

One of our newer editors, User:David_FLXD, has recently gone through much of our content related to Methodism and assessed it. We are very grateful for his efforts, and that of all the editors who have had a role in developing that content. We have every reason to believe that this will make it significantly easier for the Methodism work group to create and develop content relevant to Methodism. To help that along, we certainly encourage everyone to do what they can to help David and the other Methodism editors to bring the content relevant to their tradition to the highest possible level of quality.

I believe
... in the Holy Trinity, the sacraments of Baptism and Holy Communion, the Arminian conception of free will through God's prevenient grace, and the regular renewal of the individual's covenant with God. I am a Methodist.

AE

Hello Mr. Carter,

I was wondering what's going on with the AE I submitted. There hasn't been admin activity on it in a few days, which isn't an issue, but I was hoping that a decision could be made soon, if need be with other admins pitching in, but right now it doesn't seem to be heading anywhere. Since I don't really know what else to do, I just felt it best to notify you about this, as you were an active admin on the AE.

Thank you,

Wikimedia Foundation report

As some of you may have seen, the Simple English Wikipedia has been experiencing some difficulties lately. This particular entity could be of great value to several individuals who are trying to learn English. As some of you who do speak foreign languages know, one of the most easily available, and, in general, useful learning aids for people is a text they know already, which allows them to focus on the specific words of the new language. Various recorded readings and translations of the Bible are among the best examples of this. Any efforts to try to enhance this vital means of informing a large segment of our readership is more than welcome. People interested in helping develop it are encouraged to leave a note regarding their specific articles of interest at the Christianity noticeboard. It would be wonderful if we could report some significant contributions to this sister site next month. And, of course, if we do have something to report, those involved would receive our greatest thanks.

WikiProject Calvinism is one of our more important subprojects. It is specifically devoted to developing content relating to the Calvinist tradition, and the primary point for development of content relating to the Pilgrims, Presbyterians, Reformed churches, Congregational church, Reformed Baptists, and Low church. We definitely encourage everyone to do what they can to help this project develop the content relating to this extremely important Christian tradition.

I believe
... that human nature is insufficient for salvation, and the grace of God is required to do so. I believe that God has preordained who will and will not achieve salvation. I believe that Jesus's atonement was sufficient for the purposes for which it was done. I believe that God's grace is of such power that it can overcome any person's resistance. I believe that those whom God has chosen for salvation will, by the undeniable power of God, persevere in God's grace. I am a Calvinist.

WikiProject Holidays/Christmas task force is the group whose purpose is to help develop the content related to the Christmas season, including Advent, New Year's, and related holidays. As many of us know, in several parts of the world, including the United States, the Christmas season is not only the time of one of the greatest holidays of the Christian liturgical year, but it is also the "make or break" time for many retailers, whose profitability for the year often depends on their success in this time of the giving of sometimes significantly expensive gifts. In other parts of the world, the winter solstice period and sometimes specifically Christmas itself means something that might surprise many Christians, like the Christmas in Japan, where Christmas is one of the times hotels receive the greatest number of, often unmarried, couples staying there for the night. The solstice season is also significant to several other religions. Many of these days are also legal holidays in several places. In Belarus, for instance, both the Western and Eastern Christmas commemorations are legal holidays. We would certainly welcome the members of this project to donate some of their time and talents in the upcoming months to improving this significant content.

I think it is about time to go to WP:RFAR but this is something I've not done before. Actually, other than the odd comment when involved, I've tried to stay away from. I have a list of 65 involved people (from the MFD and that discussion) that would likely be considered involved, but I'm hoping you could help by crafting the RFC itself. I am thinking User:RGloucester would also be helpful. As you have more experience with the process, I'm thinking that you taking the lead (with help from others, of course) would be the best chance of getting it accepted. Ping me. 4. Scotland Casliber (submissions)
 5. New York City Muboshgu (submissions)
 6. Wisconsin Miyagawa (submissions)
 7. Minnesota Ruby2010 (submissions)
 8. Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions)

Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants.

Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently, discussions and polls are open, and all contributions are welcome. You can also sign up for next year's competition. There will be no further newsletters this year, although brief notes may be sent out in December to remind everyone about the upcoming competition. It's been a pleasure to work with you all, and we hope to see you all in January! J Milburn (talkemail) and The ed17 (talkemail) 00:30, 1 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see you're the only recently-active WikiProject History Coordinator. Would you mind taking a look at this article?
The 'multiple issues' maintenance template covers most of its issues plus take a look at each chart's 'source' - all assert that "chart prepared with data from Wikipedia" with some asserted sources including rootsweb/genealogy/ancestry/mypages blogs/user-submitted websites, plus all assert "not previously published". I looked-up WikiProject Genealogy but it seems pretty moribund with the last edits to the Wikipedia:WikiProject Genealogy page dating to 2011 and the four members not seeming very active.
I see that this 'relationships' article was nom'ed for deletion in February 2012 (see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Genealogical relationships of Presidents of the United States) with the vote being "Keep". There haven't been any improvements since then, though, and the article itself has been tagged since October of last year. From the AfD discussion, some editors indicated the information presented in the article "is interesting" but when the information presented in the 'cousin' sections is almost completely-unsourced plus there is the additional consideration assertions being made about living persons... Do you have any ideas or recommendations about what to do with this article? Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 21:47, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is not a newsletter

This is just a tribute.

Anyway. You're getting this note because you've participated in discussion and/or asked for updates to either the Article Feedback Tool or Page Curation. This isn't about either of those things, I'm afraid ;p. We've recently started working on yet another project: Echo, a notifications system to augment the watchlist. There's not much information at the moment, because we're still working out the scope and the concepts, but if you're interested in further updates you can sign up here.

In addition, we'll be holding an office hours session at 21:00 UTC on Wednesday, 14 November in #wikimedia-office - hope to see you all there :). I appreciate it's an annoying time for non-Europeans: if you're interested in chatting about the project but can't make it, give me a shout and I can set up another session if there's enough interest in one particular timezone or a skype call if there isn't. Re: Patron Saints of Places

I noticed on the Talk page two separate comments, going back a few years, that the page would be more user-friendly if the listing was according to Place. Accordingly I've been trying to re-sort the entries towards that end. I've been making the changes in what I hope are manageable bits, partly because it's very time-consuming and I don't want to lose anything(particularly the citations), and partly because I've been waiting for someone to object. (I take it from your welcomed feedback that I may proceed.) As far as the other patron articles: In general, since an article on any individual saint would indicate their various areas of patronage, geographic and otherwise, I think the over-all listings would be better grouped by topic. However, those pages seem somewhat less pressing, because at least they are separated alphabetically, (whereas, I found the Places page a bit confusing ... particularly because a number of the historical "places" are now known as something else). ---I am going to see if I can find some images as well (unless there is a rule against images and lists). -On another note, I was looking for a clean-up listing for the Saints portal, but the one I found dates back to 3/12/10. Is there a more current one somewhere? ---(I noticed your comment on the WT:X talk page, and I would be interested in helping out a bit on Advent/Christmas content, if you like.) --- appreciate the input. 2013 Religion Goals: My minor contribution

John, on your page of desired religion articles, under Judaism, you have requested "Jewish religious year." The article Jewish holiday (which I would like to rename Jewish holidays, but which I fear doing because there are so many links already) covers that territory. (Actually, when I looked for an analogy article to check myself on this a couple of months back, "Christian holidays" redirects to Liturgical year.) In Judaism the concept is not exactly parallel to the concept in Christianity. But to make sure we cover all bases, may I suggest: Jewish religious year becomes a disambiguation page, leading to Jewish holiday (sic) for a description of the religious observances through the year, and also leading to Jewish calendar for a description of how the calendar is built? StevenJ81 (talk) 17:10, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Received. Thank you. StevenJ81 (talk) 20:28, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
John, I read what you sent. That article really just combined content that in Wikipedia appears under Jewish holiday and Hebrew calendar. So I'm going to create an article that points to the others. Odd, though, that WP doesn't really quite have a page type like this. It could be created as a disambiguation page, but we're not really exactly parsing an ambiguous term here. Created as a regular article, it might technically be considered a stub, but it's not really something that needs fleshing out at that location, either. Look in my sandbox and see what you think. Bibliography of encylopedias

Thanks, John, for the tremendous effort you have been making on religion. You will see I have moved the section to a new article. Excellent work.-- Ipigott (talk) 19:02, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I see, by the way, that you have listed Church of Scotland under Anglican although it is in fact Presbyterian. I also see you have not included Presbyterian as a separate subsection. As you appear to be an expert in the field, I am leaving things as they are until I hear from you. --Ipigott (talk) 19:22, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your explanations. I'll look into it again tomorrow. --Ipigott (talk) 22:07, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sooo, any chance you might be interested? - jc37 21:08, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I honestly very seriously doubt I would stand a chance if I did run. I can think of more than a few editors out there who I've really annoyed while working with contentious material over the years, and I tend to think that they would be likely to come out in droves, possibly even from retirement, if I did. Dbachmann, as many enemies as he has made over the years, would probably stand a better chance than me. John Carter (talk) 21:12, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You know, I have always found you to be one of the most humble Wikipedians I know, when it comes to these things.
I think you stand a much better chance than you might think : )
Though I do find it interesting that your response is rather similar to my comments here : ) - jc37 21:18, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

About my edits

Hi, I have been talking with an admin on my talkpage [1] And have requested for assistance for well...my own edits. As I mentioned in that conversation, I have been trying to branch out to other pages. However, despite my time spent at the LLDM article, I am still somewhat uninformed of everything wiki. And I feel that my edits are now in question and I may, if not already, be labeled all sorts of things.

My request for you is to read the LLDM article to see where NPOV issues may exist. If you could also help me out in making good edits and advise me to make sure I don't get caught up in the middle of the action. The problem is, I don't see any wrong doing on my part, however I know how cognitive dissonance can affect people, so I am trying to get input on my own behavior from this point on. This is my attempt at trying to do good. I want to contribute to LLDM (Considering all the research I have invested in it in the past) and be a legitimate editor (as opposed to constant accusations leveled against me). I fear that if I edit anything on that page, I'll be indiscriminately challenged and reverted.

In other words, if in fact I have been a bad editor (and I deny it but I feel like I'd be fighting an uphill battle on that given recent events), I would like help to turn that around. Would you please help me in this regard? Thanks for your time Fordx12 (talk) 02:18, 13 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Portal:Society nominated as Featured Portal candidate

I've nominated Portal:Society for featured portal candidacy, discussion is at Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates/Portal:Society.

Note: I'm notifying you because you are listed on List of portal review volunteers, and it'd be nice to have a relatively more prompt resolution on this particular one as it's part of the Main Page Featured Portal drive.

La Luz del Mundo

Hi John

re: the Serious SPA concerns which we noticed on the Rfc for this article's editor RidjalA.

RobertRosen (talk) 19:19, 14 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Giovanni Giovenale Ancina

Hallo John, I come from Italian Wilkipedia.
