SummerSlam is an annual WWE pay-per-view event that is held in August of every year. The first SummerSlam was held on August 29, 1988 in Madison Square Garden in New York City. SummerSlam is regarded as the second biggest pay per view of the year after WrestleMania. Some fans of the WWE call it one of the 'Big Four', as it was one of the original four annual WWE pay per views, and one of the four that bring together both the Raw and Smackdown! brands onto the same card, something that hasn't been true of the remaining pay per views of the year since 2003.
SummerSlam has seen more Ladder Matches than any other World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Pay-Per-View. 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001, and 2005 all featured Ladder Matches. However in April 2006 WrestleMania 22, WrestleMania tied with PPV Ladder matches. (1994, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2006.)

Backstage announcer "Mean" Gene Okerlund was set to interview then-WWF Intercontinental Champion Rick Rude and Rude's manager Bobby "The Brain" Heenan prior to Rude's title defense against The Ultimate Warrior when the Summerslam backdrop fell backwards. An off-camera Vince McMahon could be heard saying "Nice move", followed by Okerlund yelling "Fuck it". The cameras immediately cut away to a live shot of the crowd, with play-by-play announcer Tony Schiavone and color commentator Jesse "The Body" Ventura immediately attempting to restore order. After a short while, Okerlund's interview with Rude and Heenan proceeded without incident.
