== Do Some Research ==

How about before deleting content, you do some research first. Research which would have taken about 10 seconds. Jinx is in fact a champion in the popular MOBA Game League of Legends.

As evidenced by this:
*[http://leagueoflegends.wikia.com/wiki/Jinx Jinx's page at the League of Legends Wiki on Wikia.com] (Widley praised for its accurate information about the game)
*[http://gameinfo.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/game-info/champions/jinx/ Jinx's page at the North American version of the Official League of Legends site] (THIS is the official site for the game for North America

Do your research next time. I've heard that people on Wikipedia delete content without doing any research. Now I see that I'm right. It took me longer to type up the information, then look at the websites.

Revisit whether UBC should point to UBC (disambiguation) page or University of British Columbia as primary topic

Replied at Talk:UBC (disambiguation)#Revisit whether UBC should point to UBC (disambiguation) page or University of British Columbia as primary topic. No need copy the discussion in multiple places -- a simple notification is sufficient. olderwiser 18:35, 6 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

MOS:COMMA

I have opened a new RFC at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style § RFC: Proposed amendment to MOS:COMMA regarding geographical references and dates. sroc 💬 08:32, 7 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, (first, I want to state that I hope I don't step on toes) but I just wanted to let you know that I changed back those dab's that you reverted as the fact that they have a red link is not a reason to revert. If you check out the disambiguation page here it states,

It may contain red links to help editors create articles on notable entries.

you will note that red links are ok as they increase the chance that the "red link" article will get created if someone sees that, otherwise it may never get created. Thanks for your fastidiousness regardless of the outcome. speednat (talk) 22:36, 8 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Speednat: You quote from WP:Disambiguation from a sub-section specifically about set index articles, which are different from disambiguation pages. One of the significant differences is that they may contain redlinks. The guidance for redlinks on disambiguation pages can be found at WP:DABRL:
A link to a non-existent article (a "red link") should only be included on a disambiguation page when an article (not just disambiguation pages) also includes that red link.
Further guidance is at WP:DABMENTION:
If a topic does not have an article of its own, but is mentioned within another article, then a link to that article should be included. In this case, the link does not start the line, but it should still be the only blue wikilink.
Regards. olderwiser 00:27, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
understood, the only time I add section on dab pages is if I have just added the red link on an article page. All three of those or four... I am not sure how many were done.... but anyway, they are all within the article Amdo. If needed, I will write the articles, I just didn't have that on my plate for the day. Let me know is you want the articles started at least. I just felt that if I left them red someone with more knowledge on the subject might write the article. My knowledge on all of those is a bit weak. speednat (talk) 00:32, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Speednat: Basic idea is that disambiguation pages cannot introduce information that is not already present in other articles. Disambiguation pages are primarily intended to assist readers in navigating existing pages. olderwiser 00:34, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
actually they are not in that article. I am not sure what I was thinking. Give me a couple of days and I will write the article as I will need to do some research. speednat (talk) 00:48, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Please try to be cooperative and think of this community as a team. I am trying to solve a problem that I saw while doing research on Tibet for the Amdo article, I noticed that the Lo People were not documented anywhere on the wiki, nor were their variations in spelling the Klo or Glo. So, to help out the future wiki readers and editors, I added what I felt was needed and helpful information. You, arbitrarily decided that i was not doing things the right way and reverted my changes without discussion and when I start a discussion, you still revert without waiting for me to try to fix things to your satisfaction. If you don't like the way things are going, with my edits, then discuss them with me as per most suggestions on the wiki. It is always easier to effect change by discussing and convincing someone of your POV rather than cramming it down their throat. I will try to fix the dab's to your satisfaction but in the future, please do not revert as I am trying to improve the wiki, and will change what I am doing if warranted to effect that change. speednat (talk) 22:16, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have now added the variation in spelling on the Lhoba people page and I sincerely hope that this helps solve the issue that you are having with my constructive changes. Please do not revert again, and if there is something else...please, please, please, talk to me and I will try to adhere to what you perceive as the correct way. speednat (talk) 22:23, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad you added information to the article. For the moment that is sufficient for inclusion on the disambiguation pages. But, do you have a reference for these alternate spellings/transliterations? Please understand that people make all sorts of claims on Wikipedia about things they think they know, some of them may be true and some not, but the information must be verifiable. And, as I've explained before, disambiguation pages cannot present information that is not supported by an existing article. olderwiser 02:14, 10 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
When I go to my school library next week, I have the books on Tibet that I was using to write the article on Amdo. I will place references, then speednat (talk) 05:41, 10 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

I would like to know why you are deleting the stayfree content ??

please can you tell me why you are deleting the content of Stayfree page .Are you working for Johnson and Johnson??? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Getdpg (talkcontribs) 14:39, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Because your edits are re-writing the article to be country-specific (and are completely unreferenced and written like an advertisement). olderwiser 16:59, 12 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Getdpg: Have you looked at the product web site, http://www.stayfree.com/ ? It clearly states it is published by McNeil PPC and that they are responsible for its content. McNeil is a consumer healthcare division of Johnson and Johnson. olderwiser 12:46, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Li surname (郦)

Hi Bkonrad, thanks for fixing the title capitalization of Li Surname (郦). Could you please further move the article to Li (surname 郦), as "surname" should be part of the disambiguator, like all other surname articles. I tried to do it myself but for some reason it's on the title blacklist. Thanks! -Zanhe (talk) 19:53, 23 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Huron

On November 28th 2013, the links with the article "Huron" (disambiguation) were canceled on English articles whose title includes the word "Huron". There is certainly a good intention behind that action. Put in perpectives, that these links to disambiguation article may seem unnecessary to some people, but very useful for others.

On Wikipedia, desambiguation articles and links in the related articles help greatly users to navigate in this ocean of information. Homonym articles help particularly to understand the origin of the name or toponyms, and their interrelation. The word "Huron" is commonly used in many designations.

In my contribution to Wikipedia, much effort has been invested to make connections with disambiguation pages in different languages. It is regrettable that these links with English article "Huron" (disambiguation) have been deleted in related articles. Against my proposal is to restore these links with the English article "Huron" (disambiguation). Thanks to reconsider this initiative. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Veillg1 (talkcontribs) 14:28, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Veillg1: It is not customary on English Wikipedia to add disambiguation hatnotes on articles where the title is not in fact ambiguous and only happens to include an ambiguous word (these are termed "partial title matches"). olderwiser 15:01, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Have you seen where that link leads?...to the Oxford University Press article, where the journal isn't even mentioned! What is anyone going to get out of that? In fact, I've nominated that redirect for deletion. WQUlrich (talk) 20:42, 30 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I see. I had assumed the journal was mentioned, but regardless, a disambiguation entry without any blue link is useless. olderwiser 20:53, 30 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

About you moving Geuleon Neo (Disturbance)

Did you even open up the talk page? Cheers. Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 15:16, 9 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Raykyogrou0: Yes, and I don't see any clear support for what you did. And besides, as the proposer of the move, you have no business closing the move. olderwiser 00:39, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I know admins usually close RMs but the outcome seemed clear to me since the discussion had shifted course. The name I requested to move it to made no more sense when someone else made it clear that the korean text (Geuleon Neo) does not mean "Disturbance" but something else. So per Wikipedia:WikiProject Songs#Style I suggested the alternative title Geuleon Neo (Disturbance) that no one opposed to. My message has been there for over a week so I decided that the wait has been long enough. Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 02:35, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It doesn't necessarily need an admin to close, just someone who is not a partisan in the discussion. Is there any reliable English-language source that refers to the song as "Geuleon Neo (Disturbance)"? If not, it appears to be an invention. olderwiser 02:38, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I know that, but the discussion wasn't about moving it to Disturbance (song) anymore. No. At WP:SONG, it says that if the "title does not use the Latin alphabet, the article name should be the transliterated form of the title using Latin characters" "Geuleon Neo" is a romanization/transliteration of 그런 너. And "Geuleon Neo" does not translate to "Disturbance". As one user pointed out in the discussion, "Disturbance" is the English marketing name. But since the American iTunes also uses the Korean name (it's even in the url), the name of the song is "Geuleon Neo (Disturbance)". Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 03:16, 10 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello

Hello, i have been noticing that you are deleting my edits on the page ISD, i wrote International School of Dongguan, run by International School Services, you later deleted it and changed it to QSI, i know that the school QSI in dongguan exists, because i have been in it for 2 years, but there is another school called ISD run by International School Services that i am currently in, it does exist, i hope that you don't delete it because i am sure it exists, i am currently in this school. This is my fourth year living in dongguan, and i have spent all these 4 years in international schools, i know every international school in dongguan. If you don't believe this school exists, heres the website: www.i-s-d.org Also, Quality School International is QSI, and should be put under the page QSI, and not the page ISD. thank you for taking your time to read this message, i hope you can understand what i am trying to say here. opps, i found why all my links are red, the organization i was linking too was International Schools Services, but the first time, i wrote it as International School Services, without the s behind school, anyway, i have changed the problem, and it now as a blue link, this that acceptable? thanks!

@Longseeyes: Well, that's a start, but the International Schools Services article make no mention of the school in Dongguan. That is necessary to support the entry on the disambiguation page. I'll leave it alone for now, but you do need to somehow add that information to the article. olderwiser 11:33, 12 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dabs

Hi B, Re this edit https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=TBB&diff=585849952&oldid=585848314 , are you aware that the example in MOS:DABORDER shows the miscellaneous entries near the top of the page rather than in a "Other" section? (I only realised that when one of my edits was reverted). Maybe that part of the MOS should be changed, but, in the meantime, W's restructuring is actually correct. However, the rest of what W's doing is clearly a problem. As (s)he's continuing after a talk page message and what must by now be a large number of reversions I'm wondering whether something like WP:RFC/U might be appropriate. DexDor (talk) 06:07, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The example is not very illustrative of a miscellaneous list. The example as given only shows a short list of uses followed by a list of people with the surname (which actually illustrates a different point under MOS:DABNAME, where a list of persons with a name or surname can be included below the other entries). If you look at Moss (disambiguation) now, it does not match the example. I'm not sure an WP:RFC/U is needed just yet, more discussion on his/her talk page would be appropriate, IMO. olderwiser 12:48, 13 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The linked article should contain information relevant to the term being disambiguated. In this case, neither of the articles you linked to Silver Linings Playbook and Bradley Cooper make any mention of the term "Excelsior". Disambiguation pages are not indexes of trivia. olderwiser 00:36, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

That's the basic idea. Of course, the usage in the movie should be significant enough and noted by third party sources, else other editors might remove it from that article as mere trivia. olderwiser 03:28, 16 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

okay, thanks, i'll do that. i do think it is significant enough, because if you search for 'excelsior' and the movies name, it comes up with a reasonable amount of articles. 'silver linings' is linked to that motto. also, trivia or not, i can imagine ppl hearing the phrase and wanting to look it up to see where it came from - so i do think it is useful having it as a reference here. thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.211.239.235 (talk) 00:23, 17 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Text on redirects

Yo, O&W! Have you noticed that redirects show text now? – Paine Ellsworth CLIMAX! 02:17, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I had noticed. I'm not aware of what change brought this about though. olderwiser 02:43, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Check out the bug report... Template:Bug (funny – I knew the report number by heart) I just did an edit request at Template talk:R with possibilities, where you had done one for me last October, and we had talked about this. Joys! – Paine Ellsworth CLIMAX! 02:51, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Talkback

Hello, Bkonrad. You have new messages at Wikipedia talk:Requested moves.

Blackout

Bkonrad, I put back as Blackout/All Clear as cannot have a redirect in the link, must be 'as is' un-redirected and unpiped unless to a subsection see MOS:DAB. OK about the episodes though. Ex nihil (talk) 11:35, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What rule says you can't use redirects? Please see WP:DABREDIR.
Linking to a redirect can also be helpful when both:
  1. the redirect target article contains the disambiguated term; and
  2. the redirect could serve as an alternative name for the target article, meaning an alternative term which is already in the article's lead section.
I think it is preferable in this case to link to the redirect as it is the actual title of the book. Blackout/All Clear is a manufactured title for the Wikipedia article on the subject of the two books. olderwiser 11:59, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

OpenOffice.org

Older/wiser,

I pinged Shmget too on Talk:OpenOffice. I expected he'd get back so I went and checked his contribs to see if he had been about ... he came out of semi-retirement to reply to that proposal. See also his contribs to Talk:OpenOffice.org last year.

There's something weird going on with these sets of articles. I've gone though the references relating to the transfer to Apache. Bizarre isn't even the word for it IMO. I've prepared a list of seemingly sourced statments that I don't believe are supported by the references given. I would not say the list is complete. Similar issues were raised last year.

Out of a desire to hear someone else opinion, what's your take?

Reverting disambiguation edits

Bkonrad,

On the Swimming (disambiguation) page, HCA is continuously removing my edit reading "

  • "Swimming", an episode of the television series Zoboomafoo"

Is it the right thing for him to do to delete that? I'm not sure. Teletubbies is a very popular and well-known show, and Zoboomafoo is not so much, so I was asking for that reason. (Also notable that Zoboomafoo has its own article and its episodes are notable enough to have a page for its episode list) MadisonGrundtvig (talk | contribs) 20:16, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

But the individual episode is not, in and of itself, notable enough to have its own page. I'm not just doing this out of spite - if we allow something not notable enough for its own page to be in the list, suddenly there will be a basis for allowing any and every media source that has "swimming" in the title, no matter how tangentially it's mentioned and how little notability it has. Disambiguation pages are not meant to be comprehensive lists of everything to do with a word, especially a common word, but rather as an aid to navigation for common alternatives. HCA (talk) 22:41, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I understand. I don't know who is right or wrong, because this topic is actually debated. This user, Bkonrad, has protected my edits to disambiguation pages of Teletubbies episodes. For instance, my Hey Diddle Diddle (disambiguation) page was deleted, but he revived the page, brought back the "*"Hey Diddle Diddle", an episode of the television series Teletubbies" reference, as well as lots of other references to other media. Songs go in the same boat as well, not to mention. That's why I'm asking this user, because I don't know if he revived it because it is a well known, popular television series or because every episode is eligible. Try surfing disambiguation pages. I've seen so many, and there are tons of them that are not notable enough for their own articles. I personally believe that anything notable enough to be mentioned on Wikipedia should be in the disambiguation pages, but that's just my opinion, and rules are rules. That's why I'm asking about this here. MadisonGrundtvig (talk | contribs) 01:26, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
First, to be clear, I have not protected any page recently. I have restored entries that were improperly removed from disambiguation pages. WP:DABNOINCLUDE makes no reference of notability as a reason not to include an entry on a disambiguation page. WP:DABMENTION does pretty plainly state that a topic mentioned within another article is appropriate to include. olderwiser 02:20, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Alien TOCright

Is there something in the style guide recommending that a TOC should be floated if a disambiguation page is longer than two pages? I assumed TOC placement was all about the height of the TOC itself. --McGeddon (talk) 11:48, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:MOSDAB#Organizing long lists by subject sections: On longer lists, {{TOC right}} may be used to move the table of contents to the right hand side of the page. This reduces the amount of white space and may improve the readability of the page. olderwiser 11:55, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't that talking about the height of the TOC, and the masses of right-hand whitespace that a lengthy TOC produces? I assume it's talking about how floating the TOC "reduces the amount of white space", irrespective of the length of the article. --McGeddon (talk) 12:21, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, sort of I guess. I think it applies to Alien regardless. Without TOC right, the TOC takes up most of the first screen on my display. olderwiser 12:33, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wouldn't most TOCs on Wikipedia take up that much of your screen, though? This one's only seven items long. --McGeddon (talk) 12:42, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
On a disambiguation page, it just means that much wasted white space to scroll through. The idea is to place as much useful content as possible readily at hand on the first screen. olderwiser 12:49, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I always thought TOCrights had to be used sparingly, that (unless the TOC itself was enormous) tightening the page layout wasn't worth the slight reader confusion of having different layouts across different pages. Surely there are thousands of Wikipedia articles that have no picture in the lede and a middling-sized TOC, which could better use their first screen by putting the TOC in the top right, but (per MOS:LEDE's "avoid floating the table of contents if possible") don't? --McGeddon (talk) 13:06, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Disambiguation pages are not articles and have their own style guide. Use of {{TOC right}} is commonplace on disambiguation pages. olderwiser 13:08, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Huh, fair enough, I can you're right now that I click around some random disambiguation pages. Somehow I hadn't noticed it before. So is "always float TOCs on disambig pages" actually in the MOS anywhere, or just an unwritten consensus? --McGeddon (talk) 13:15, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
WP:MOSDAB#Organizing long lists by subject sections. It is option for disambiguation pages with longer lists of entries. olderwiser 13:17, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, had forgotten that original link was from the DAB style. Thanks! --McGeddon (talk) 14:01, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cliburn (disambiguation)

Would you be opposed to having the ambiguity dealt with purely via a hatnote on Cliburn? There are only two other ambiguous terms and I do not like the current duplication of names. —Xezbeth (talk) 12:57, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What, you'd want to list all three persons and the surname page as well as the disambiguation page in a hatnote? I think not. I've no objection to adding a link to the surname article to the hatnote, but would still object to removing the short list of surname-holders from the disambiguation page. A better solution would be to delete Cliburn (disambiguation), seeing as how the only really ambiguous use is the surname and the village (the former railway station serving the village is mentioned in proper context within the village article). olderwiser 13:58, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That was my intention, so I'm going to just boldly redirect the dab page and do that. If it's reverted then I wont press the issue. —Xezbeth (talk) 19:18, 15 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Do Some Research

How about before deleting content, you do some research first. Research which would have taken about 10 seconds. Jinx is in fact a champion in the popular MOBA Game League of Legends.

As evidenced by this:

Do your research next time. I've heard that people on Wikipedia delete content without doing any research. Now I see that I'm right. It took me longer to type up the information, then look at the websites.
