Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

    April 15

    How to address this?

I'm sure there's a better place to ask this, but I'll be damned if I know where. I was recently reverting a couple grammatically incorrect, unsourced edits on some pages relating to Japanese history when I noticed that they were both by the same user. I checked on their contributions, and there were, well, over a thousand such edits spanning back to November 2016. I believe that they are a well-meaning user for whom English is perhaps their not first language, but that is wayyy too many pages for me to possibly go through and fix myself. Should some sort of warning be issued? See for yourselves: Special:Contributions/Tokugawa_Nimatsu --Mooeena (talk) 03:35, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have informed this user: User talk:Tokugawa Nimatsu#Questions about your edits who was last active yesterday. --Mopskatze (talk) 06:36, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have written the page about Ignaz Semmelweis in Korean but Icannot see — Preceding unsigned comment added by Neoper (talkcontribs) 07:00, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your contributions to the English Wikipedia can be seen by clicking on the "Contributions" link at the top of any page here, but at the foot of that page there are links "Accounts" and "Global contributions", each of which allow you to see your contributions page on the Korean Wikipedia. --David Biddulph (talk) 07:31, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Although not directly related to real ale.

Although not directly related to Real ale, I like many others also drink beer from cans. I am fed-up with drinking 440ml of beer when I really want a pint. There are some beers available in 500ml cans which is half a litre, which might be OK with continental types. There are very occasionally 1 pint cans, but now we are leaving the EEC; I would like to campaign for a change to 1 pint cans as this is our traditional measure. Would anyone else agree? Recreation of a deleted page

Hi I had a page titled "Rolta India" which was deleted by the moderator due to its promotional content. I would like to make this page live again by making changes in the content that was posted earlier. Need your help in knowing how to go about this page recreation — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jovian 13 (talkcontribs) 09:47, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Really, that's just the worst way to recreate an article, especially since a lot of the things you added to the article were what made it promotional. Wikipedia is not the place to go on about "Core Competencies," "Quality Benchmarks," and "Awards / Recognition."
The best way to do it would be to:
If you follow those steps properly, there's not reason for an article to get deleted. Ian.thomson (talk) 10:10, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your feedback. I have actually done my research and made changes in the original content so that it doesn't look promotional. Have also got rid of points such as quality benchmarks and awards. Since I do not have access to the content that was deleted how do I make changes to it? Do I have to create a new page here or is there a way to access the deleted content and make changes there itself? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jovian 13 (talkcontribs) 10:41, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You can recreate from scratch. If you have a conflict of interest when editing this article, you must declare it. If you work directly or indirectly for the company, or otherwise are acting on its behalf, you are very strongly discouraged from attempting to write an article at all. At best, any proposed article creation should be submitted through the articles for creation process, rather than directly. Regardless, if you are paid directly or indirectly by the company you are writing about, you are required by the Wikimedia Terms of Use to disclose your employer, client and affiliation. You can post such a mandatory disclosure to your user page at User:Jovian 13. The template {{Paid}} can be used for this purpose – e.g. in the form: {{paid|user=Jovian 13|employer=InsertName|client=InsertName}}. If you are being compensated, please provide the required disclosure. Note that editing with a COI is discouraged, but permitted as long as it is declared. Concealing a COI can lead to a block. Who gets the award?

In the article Ahmed Sultan Bin Sulayem, I was trying to clean up the references and noticed that at least a few of the awards attributed to Sulayem were actually awarded to DMCC (the government company he is executive chairman of). The DMCC article doesn't list any awards. Am I correct in thinking that only awards given to Sulayem himself, and not his company, should be listed? Leschnei (talk) 13:49, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct Leschnei, you can move the company awards to the company article, provided they are properly referenced. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 18:32, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

How do I rename a page?

How do I rename a page? I spelled a word in the title wrong. --Cass— Preceding unsigned comment added by Skim127 (talkcontribs)

    See Wikipedia:Moving a page#How to move a page. -- zzuuzz (talk) 15:48, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Skim127: at the top of the article, there should be a button that says "more". If you click on that, then you will see a button called "move". If you click on it, then you can rename a page. RileyBugzYell at me | Edits 16:03, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify, we call it "moving" when it is really "renaming" the page. This threw me at first. Herostratus (talk) 19:21, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And me as well first time I encountered it. Move it where? SW3 5DL (talk) 21:33, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
This is probably due to mediawiki software being written and maintained primarily by Unix users. Whereas Windows conceptually separates "move" and "rename" operations, in Unix moving a file and renaming it are the same thing. If you have the file /home/caeciliusinhorto/file.txt, to rename it "file2.txt" you would move it to that name, in exactly the same way you could move it into a different folder. The computer thinks of the two operations being the same, because a filename is really just a pointer to where the file is stored in the computer's memory: the contents of the file don't actually move anywhere. Business info box help

Where might I find a better info box for this article H. Bronnley & Co.? I'd like the image to be inside the info box, as I believe we normally do. Thanks. SW3 5DL (talk) 21:30, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Infobox company, which this article uses, has parameters for both a logo and an image, so it is just a matter of moving the image to the appropriate parameter. -- zzuuzz (talk) 21:35, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@SW3 5DL: I think company infoboxes usually have images of the logo and headquarters or other buildings but not products of the company. Infobox images are generally supposed to display the article subject and not something they made. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:56, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, PrimHunter. I can find a copyright free company logo, but where can I find an infobox that takes an image? The one on the article doesn't see to have that. SW3 5DL (talk) 23:11, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Never mind, just spotted the post from zzuuzz. Thanks zzuzz. SW3 5DL (talk) 23:12, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

how to add a category that doesn't exist?

Hello again everybody. I am working on an article, Adaptor proteins, vesicular transport that until yesterday was a disinformative redirect. There is a notice on the page asking to have categories added to it. Unless I am missing something, appropriate categories do not exist! In a perfect world, I would categorize it as "biology" then "wikiproject Molecular and Cell Biology" then "cell biology" then "vesicular transport". I can't find appropriate categories, although being new at this I can imagine that I'm not looking at the right pages. Please advise. Thank you. JeanOhm (talk) 21:57, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@JeanOhm: You can look for categories on similar articles. WikiProject categories belong on the talk page but don't add them directly. They are added via WikiProject banners like {{WikiProject Molecular and Cell Biology}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:09, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Thank you. I added the MCB banner to the talk page. However, I guess I didn't make my question clear. At the bottom of the article page there is this statement "This article has not been added to any categories. Please help out by adding categories to it so that it can be listed with similar articles." Adding the mcb banner to the talk page didn't fix that. I looked at the bottom of the AP2 adaptor complex article, and found "Categories: Membrane biology Peripheral membrane proteins Membrane protein stubs" which are poor (IMHO) categories for that page and the page I'm working on. Any other suggestions? Thank you again. JeanOhm (talk) 22:30, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I understood the question but I'm not a biologist so I didn't suggest specific categories for the article page. You can also start at a maybe too general category like Category:Cell biology and look for suitable subcategories. It doesn't have to be perfect matches. The box with "This article has not been added to any categories" is generated by {{uncategorized}} which can be removed from the source when categories are added. Stub categories are generated by stub templates and shouldn't be added directly but for example via {{Cell-biology-stub}}. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:48, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@JeanOhm: Maybe looking at categories of the Vesicular transport protein article could help...? --CiaPan (talk) 22:32, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@CiaPan: Thanks, sort of. However, that article (which I hadn't seen before) is also disinformative (another item for my "to be corrected list". I'm starting to wonder if there are any other cell biologists editing wikipedia, or if the other cell biologists are also feeling overwhelmed by all the corrections that need to be made.) and the categories aren't appropriate. JeanOhm (talk) 22:47, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@CiaPan and PrimeHunter: I found some relevant categories on other articles. Thanks again. JeanOhm (talk) 03:50, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

how to create a wikipedia project

hi, As I know from there. Everyone can create or edit the article on wikipedia. Here i want to know the different between creating a wikipedia with create a article page. As the requirement said in creating a article pages : do not post articles you would not find in an encyclopedia. Then I want to know where should I post a new word or ideas through wikipedia, can i do that through creating wikipedia project? And I want to know how to create the wikipedia project? — Preceding unsigned comment added by ZANGMEIMEI (talkcontribs) 23:46, 15 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia does not use original research -- See WP:No original research. That usually means that we do not host pages about new ideas. Ian.thomson (talk) 00:48, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    File names

I should like to learn how to request that a misspelled file name be corrected, thank you very much. CarloMartinelli —Preceding undated comment added 01:22, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

@CarloMartinelli: Which file? You can use {{Rename media}} if it's hosted here at Wikipedia, and commons:Template:Rename it it's at Wikimedia Commons. If we know the wanted change then we may also be able to judge the request and maybe perform the change. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:43, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Prime Hunter, thank you so much for your offer to help. I had begun to send a clarification but, caught by late minute doubts, I visited the appropriate page with the relevant file - which was an image - and lo! Someone had finally caught up and the wholepage was re-edited, beautifully I must say. My desired correction wasn't anything Earthshaking to be sure: an annoying misspelling. but it had been bugging me for months. Now you must know that, technically I am as hopeless as a newborn baby. Hence my cry for help. Thanks again my good fellow. Cheers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CarloMartinelli (talkcontribs) 02:11, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

i can find the article i wrote only in wiki search but not in Google, Will u please help me to know what is happening with my article now ? is it been rejected ? or is there anyway to make it live to be found in google and other search engines ? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sayyidkhaleel (talkcontribs) 04:50, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Sayyidkhaleel. According to your talk page, an administrator named Orangemike had to delete Ashraf Ali MA because it was too promotional. If you would like to create a draft of your article to try again, I would suggest going to Articles for Creation so you can create your draft, and, when you're ready, submit your draft for review to get some feedback on it. If the reviewing editor believes the article is ready, they will move the article out of draft status. If they don't think it's ready, they will let you know what mainly needs to be fixed and you will be able to fix it and resubmit it as many times as needed. While your article is a draft, it will be safe for up to six months from most reasons for deletion (the main exception to this is copyright infringement), but it will not be searchable on Google or other search engines. If you would like some more help, I suggest you visit the Teahouse, a page designed to answer the questions of newer editors like yourself. I have let Orangemike know about your question here, so he may leave some additional feedback here since he saw the page. Gestrid (talk) 05:41, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The language was so promotional, so fawning and adulatory, as to make my skin crawl. There is no place for promotional language and peacock words in an encyclopedia. --Orange Mike | Talk 03:30, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

This is the third time I have tried to check my edit counts to find that they are 0 and my first edit is post-dated to Dec 31, 2099, 12:00 AM - any idea why this keeps happening? There are many edit counters at Wikipedia:WikiProject edit counters. I guess you refer to https://tools.wmflabs.org/xtools-ec/?user=Stuartyeates&project=en.wikipedia.org. It currently says Dec 20, 2004 for me. It's an external tool maintained by volunteers and the xTools are known for being unstable. Special:Preferences is fast and reliable but only gives the total number of edits. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:07, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It would be possible to move the two pages User:ClivePIA and User talk:ClivePIA and their page histories to the new name but the pages don't contain much so I suggest you just manually copy any parts you might be interested in. The pages can be redirected to the new name, or you can write on the pages that you are the same user. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:26, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

It did, but there's nothing we can do about it now, and no way to control where that site gets its material. And to answer the question "How do I remove this from the internet", looks like you can't, not easily. The site "http://deletedwiki.com" give no info, no access, and no contact information; the "about us" and "privacy policy" links just lead to "that page does not exist".
WHOIS gives the name of the site owner as "Contact Privacy Inc." so they are obviously obfuscating who they are. There are contacts given for Contact Privacy Inc. so you can write or call them. I wouldn't expect much satisfaction, but you never know. Herostratus (talk) 18:03, 16 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) You don't. The Wikipedia help desk answer to that is that Wikipedia has little if any control about what other internet websites do. A more useful answer though is that when you try to remove information from the internet, it often ends up being counterproductive (in particular, the Wikipedia Help Desk is somewhat widely read, so posting here a link to information you want to hide as much as possible is not a great idea). If you really want to try your luck (which I advise against), a WHOIS request will not give any email address to contact the webmaster of deletedwiki.com, but it will give an address at 5005 Mitchelldale Suite #100, Houston, Texas, United States. One more Sandbox?

Hi there. I have two sandboxes. I need to add some more formulas but they are fairly full now. @AboutFace 22: Actually, you can create your own sandbox. If you type in to the searchbox "User:", then your username with a "/" after it, and then whatever you want your sandbox to be called. Here is the article:

    Article content

Hannah Witton[edit] Hannah Witton (1919-1993) was a Sydney activist involved in the Aboriginal rights movement[1]. Hannah Witton and her husband Emil came to Australia in June 1939 as Jewish refugees from Nazi persecution in Germany. In the years following the Nazi accession to power in 1933 they had personal experience of being non-citizens in their own country. The first time they heard of the treatment of Aboriginal people was in the early forties when they read reports in the Tribune, the newspaper of the Communist Party of Australia, at the home of Rosine Guiterman [2] who looked after many refugees. The first years were very hard for them, finding their way in a new country and raising 3 children. They had always been very politically aware and by the fifties were able to become more actively involved in self-education and political activities. In the late fifties Hannah attended a NEF (New Education Fellowship) workshop at which Faith Bandler [3] spoke and this led first Hannah and later Emil to join the Aboriginal-Australian Fellowship (AAF) and to participate actively in the struggle for Aboriginal rights. They developed a close collaborative relationship and life-long personal friendship with Faith and and her husband Hans Bandler and worked together with them for many decades on a variety of Aboriginal issues. Hannah and Emil were both on the executive of the AAF and later involved in the Federal Council for the Advancement of Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders (FCAATSI) where they campaigned on issues of land rights and civil rights of Aboriginal people. This included the successful campaign against section nine of the New South Wales Aborigines Protection Act, which prohibited the sale or supply of liquor to "any aborigine or person having apparently an admixture of aboriginal blood". They attended protest meetings and visited Aboriginal reserves with the Aboriginal activist Ken Brindle, seeing first-hand how Aboriginal people lived under the provisions of this Act. The parallels between the lives of Aborigines and their own experiences living under the Nazi Judengesetze (laws applying to the Jews) were not lost on them. They were also very aware that they had become full Australian citizens only five years after their arrival in Australia from a hostile country, while full rights were still being denied to the first Australians. From its very beginning they were actively involved in FCAATSI's campaign to amend the Australian Constitution which culminated in the successful 1967 referendum. Hannah worked hard on the campaign and Emil's printing firm printed campaign material including one of the 'Yes' for Aborigines posters. Hannah and Emil also promoted the handover of executive positions to Indigenous members in the AAF and FCAATSI. Emil resigned his position as FCAATSI treasurer in 1973 and Hannah also resigned from the executive of the Aboriginal Education Council for the same reason. For the rest of their lives they continued to be involved in human rights issues and kept in contact with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander friends and activists. In 2010 Hannah Witton's work for Aboriginal Rights was commemorated by the ACT Government by the naming of a road, "Hannah Witton Lane", in the suburb of Bonner [4] Rawitton (talk) 22:40, 9 April 2017 (UTC)RawittonRawitton (talk) 22:40, 9 April 2017 (UTC) Jump up ^ Material for this article, unless otherwise referenced, is drawn from an interview with her widower Emil Witton conducted by Leanne Miller and Sue Taffe on 6 November 1996. Image

There is an 1827 painting by Jacques Raymond Brascassat that is mentioned in the Zarafa (giraffe) article. In addition to the cultural reference, the painting would provide some informational content since it depicts the animal along its historical journey from Marseilles to Paris in that year. The only online copy of the painting that I could find is from a blog (here). I don't know if this could be uploaded, since the original source of the image is unknown; however, the painting was done in 1827 and presumably would no longer be copyrighted (?). Is it possible for "somebody" to upload this? Or, is there someplace else to bring this up, or...? 2606:A000:4C0C:E200:AC43:3B49:CF5E:E4EF (talk) 00:45, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

If the painting was indeed from the 19th century, then a faithful reproduction of that painting would fall under our {{PD-Art}} statute. The correct place to request an upload would be at WP:Files for upload. If you make a request there I'll take a look at it. Please also include what articles you want it on and where. I'll have to do some minor research to verify that everything is all right but it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks! --Majora (talk) 00:51, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Moving Page

    Hello,

Hope you're well. I have not been able to get into the Wiki system with the password I've been using over time, so I created a new account.

I am the owner of the page at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Singletary. Because I have apparently lost access to the account I was using to maintain it, I would like to have an administrator relink the page to my newly created account, along with the associated talk pages.

The old username was Forwardbounce1; the newly created username is Forwardbounce.

Basically, I would like to have Wikipedia move all the old account info over to my new account. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Forwardbounce (talkcontribs) 18:17, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think you mean that you are the main contributor to that page. (No-one owns Wikipedia pages.)
See Wikipedia:Username_policy#Changing_your_username for policy on changing usernames, but this might not be possible if you no longer have access to your old account. It might be simpler just to continue with your new username, and note on your user page that edits under your former username are yours. That is fairly obvious anyway. All three sources describe him as a "village boy" – is that consistent with your statement that he's from a middleclass family?
Anyway, do you have a question about how to edit Wikipedia? Maproom (talk) 21:07, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Page was deleted

Hi, I followed the instructions for creating a page for the non-profit organization I work at, and it was deleted. I provided back up article and everything; not sure what I did wrong. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Melisst15 (talkcontribs) 20:45, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Melisst15. The message on your talk page says it was deleted as unambiguous advertising. It is very hard for anyone to write about their employer in the neutral language which Wikipedia requires. That is why we strongly discourage people from writing about subjects they are closely connected with. Maproom (talk) 21:12, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Picture to large for infobox – Wait But Why Article in German

    Hello everyone

I have tried to add a logo to the german article concerning the US-american blog Wait But Why. The template used for the infobox is the «Infobox Website» template. Although searching online and trying for quite a while, I can't make it work and the picture is far too large for the infobox. Does someone now how to fix this? Do I have to upload the picture again with a size that matches the infobox more or less, and – if yes – do I have to ask the copyright holder for permission again if I upload the same picture (the logo) in the same size. How would I have to do this? Or is there a better / easier way to get the job done without uploading it again?

EDIT: btw no idea why name is shown in red, probably because my account is in the german wikipedia; you can find me here if you need to

    Try this:
    [[File:Wait But Why Logo.png|200px]]
sets the image to 200px; adjust the value to suit.

    "Substitution checking"?

    Why would a template need "substitution checking"?--Mr. Guye (talk) 23:33, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Certain templates should have the generated text inserted as-is into the article, rather than retaining the template text; for example, a template that adds a forgotten signature, or a user warning template. WP:Substitution has more detail. TJRC (talk) 00:21, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
But WP:Substitution doesn't explain the purpose of this category or how it's usually added to templates. It's a bit technical. First see {{Substcheck}}. The category is often added by {{Fix}} or {{Fix-span}}. {{Fix}} should be called with the parameter | subst = <includeonly>{{subst:substcheck}}</includeonly> to enable the substitution checking described in {{Substcheck}}. {{Fix}} detects if the parameter is missing and adds the category in this case. So if you see Category:Templates needing substitution checking on a template then it's often because it calls {{Fix}} without the subst parameter. The call may be via another used template or module and not directly in the source so it may be difficult to get rid of the category. However, on most templates I don't think it's a problem to have the category. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:00, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

    Article about Mega Furniture

I am an employee of Mega Furniture which is located in Phoenix AZ and in San Antonio Texas and i am wondering whether it is possible to wring an article for my organization? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.172.233.92 (talk) 23:49, 17 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

See WP:PAY. Although very strongly discouraged (emphasis in original!), it is permitted if you are extremely careful. The first thing to consider before proceeding any further is the question of WP:NOTABILITY. Using only material published by independent third parties, and strictly excluding anything whatsoever published by your own organization (no web pages, no press releases, no newsletters, no advertising, no sponsorship deals), is there enough discussion of your organization to build an article?
In general, a random retail furniture store would not qualify, so you can stop right there; an article would be rejected regardless of who wrote it. (Specifically, it is likely to be subject to WP:SPEEDY deletion under WP:A7.) If it has been, say, involved in a notable lawsuit, political controversy, or otherwise been in the news repeatedly, it might qualify. 71.41.210.146 (talk) 01:01, 18 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
