== Farr's Law ==

I don't want to violate any Wikipedia rules, but shouldn't '''Farr's Law''' be an entry in Wikipedia? Farr's Law states that an epidemic usually follows a symmetrical curve that rises before subsiding. This paradigm has been used to map and study epidemic outbreaks such as AIDS, smallpox outbreaks and cattle disease.

Farr's Law of Epidemics was first formulated in 1840, and it states that the graphs of epidemics have a tendency to rise and fall in a symmetrical pattern, resembling a bell-shaped curve. William Farr was the first to propose that the forces controlling epidemics can be understood through scientific inquiry, which then may be expressed in mathematical terms. In the early 20th century, application of the theories set forth by John Brownlee enhanced the mathematical aspects of Farr's theory and suggested the bell curve configuration. Farr asserted that epidemics proceed in a pattern where new cases rise to a crest, which is then followed by a constant deceleration period.

That message is dated November 2019. IP addresses can be assigned to different computers at different times. You can avoid things like this by creating an account, so that only your edits are attributed to you. See WP:ACCOUNT for other reasons a registered account may be a good idea. RudolfRed (talk) 23:44, 4 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
1.152.106.78, that message was probably written because someone else made edits to Boisdale, Victoria from the same IP address as you. The IP address is probably shared, so it's being used from multiple computers, which do not necessarily have to be in the same location. This IP address is all Wikipedia knows about who made the edits, so it can't know whether it was the same actual person. JIP | Talk 13:10, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    valve turning

howdy, i don't do much on wikipedia, though i love it. i was shocked that i couldn't find a page for valve turning. it could become vitally important information for people to have, especially if our politics fails to produce a democratic nation this election cycle (PS, referring to USA). how could i request a new page? thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 206.192.242.192 (talk) 01:09, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You can request an article(not just "page") at Requested Articles, but the backlog is so severe that it might never be done. If you have independent reliable sources with significant coverage of the subject, you would be better off creating the article yourself using Articles for Creation(though you should read Your First Article. 331dot (talk) 01:24, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

the following page needs attention but I don't know how to use this website

"China Foundation for the Alleviation of Policy" is a textbook example of what a wikipedia entry should not be. I was surprised when I found out it had been posted in 2011 (maybe early 20002, but again, I can hardly navigate the editing process, so I'm not sure), edited in the last few years. There was what looked to be one comment in the talk section pleading for the entry to not receive a "speedy deletion". It was all very...odd. What I wrote (which I accidently entered on the editing page) was that the entire posting read like an advertisement. It needs citations, facts and data. Its adjectives and superlatives sound like hyperbole and the first person singular, throughout, is not only poor writing for an encyclopedia, but it directly contradicts one of the arguments in the talk section's comment: that the writers are not employed by the company, nor Chinese, but rather students from Singapore writing a class assignment on little-known Chinese organisations whose very legitimacy hangs on the entry not being deleted, but rather assisted by edits from others in the community. Seems like these 'students' could have at least attempted to clean it up since 2011! Again, very odd. It is even cross-referenced on a link under the wikipedia entry 'GONGOs' 71.11.254.3 (talk) 04:19, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I assume you mean China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation. General Ization Talk 04:21, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree – almost all its many sections are unreferenced. Maproom (talk) 08:32, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion the article should be deleted entirely, but I'm willing to give it time to improve. It's overwhelmingly promotional, with hardly any references. By far the most of the text was written by two editors, neither of whom has edited any other article. It was nominated for speedy deletion at the age of six minutes but that was contested, and now it's been there for nine years without much improvement. JIP | Talk 09:52, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Restore Account

Hi, My old account was User:Boothsift where I have new page reviewer, pending changes reviewer, and rollback rights. Is it possible if I could regain my rights on this account? I have attempted to restore my account by emailing Wikimedia to no avail and this was their suggestion.

Thank you, --Boothsift New (talk) 05:42, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Boothsift New, as permissions are granted by admins, and I imagine there has to be some way to confirm the accounts are connected, you might want to post this onto wp:AN. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 09:08, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Please remove my account

This is to complex for me. I thank the two people who responded but editing is not for me if I have to add publishing citations for a theatre production in London (when it was advertised in all the UK and London papers) and/or constantly refer to American sources. I copied the wording of the previous RSC production tha thad no source publication. Why would the RSC need this? Perhaps this is the difference between the UK and USA. I am grateful this was pointed out but I do not wish to be a wiki editor. Please remove my account. Thanks --Mrs Nemo (talk) 08:22, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We don't (and cannot) remove accounts. Just stop using it. Meters (talk) 08:24, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Why would material added to any article need to have a reliable, published source? This is explained in "WP:OR" and elsewhere (and there is no difference between UK and US practice). Wikipedia in no way values US over British sources (although it values good sources from any nation over not-so-good sources from any other nation). Everything you have written in Wikipedia (for example, your comment immediately above) is licensed under the CC BY-SA 3.0 License and the GFDL. Removing your account wouldn't be compatible with either, and therefore your account can't be removed. If you don't wish to edit Wikipedia, that's a pity; however, the solution is simple: don't edit Wikipedia. -- Hoary (talk) 08:38, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me that the reviews in the British papers(especially the Times, the Guardian or the Independent) or even the adverts would be good references although I would be willing to be corrected on the latter.Spinney Hill (talk) 09:17, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I need help with the citations at Frege: Philosophy of Language. The article has three citations currently - Lowe 2005, Lowe 2017, and Scruton 1994. The second two are working properly - when you click on them, they take you to the relevant source in the "Bibliography" section. In the case of the first citation (Lowe 2005), for some reason this doesn't happen. I have no idea why. Can anyone show me how to fix this? Ti Linn cafe website link

    Hi There,

I recently tried to add a link to the Slieve League section of wikipedia https://www.slieveleague.com/tilinncafe but it got removed.

I want to provide information on Ti Linn cafe as it is a great addition to sleive league and its surround areas. Can you please let me know why this happened and how I can add the link in for future references?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Kind regards, Jennifer. — Preceding unsigned comment added by JenniferTD123 (talkcontribs) 15:50, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

JenniferTD123 You didn't just try to add a link, your text was a blatant advertisement. Please understand that Wikipedia is not a place to just provide information. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state about subjects. Wikipedia is also not a place to just post links to anything and everything associated with a subject. 331dot (talk) 15:53, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Need your advice (article)

I have found Isabel Marant's name - a famous fashion designer, definitely notable - among red links. There's a page for her eponymous fashion brand - Isabel Marant. I was wondering should I create a separate page for her biography (Isabel Marant (designer)) or add it to the brands page? If it's the latter - should the article be renamed? Can you please help me on this. Thank you in advance! Less Unless (talk) 18:06, 5 March 2020 (UTC) P.S. The information I have gathered is more than a stub-amount (in case it matters). Less Unless (talk) 18:09, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There's two ways to handle it, and I can't really decide how, because I don't have a background. Obviously, we want two different articles (one on the company, one on the person, similar to how Charles Schwab Corporation is a different article than Charles R. Schwab. Naming could be tricky here, but we have a few options we could go with:
    • Per WP:NATURALDIS, does the fashion house have a more formal name, like "Isabel Marant, Inc." or "Isabel Marant, LLC" or something like that? Using a more formal name provides a natural way to distinguish between the person and the corporation, and we could move the current article to THAT name, and use the unadorned name for the person. Alternately, if Isabel Marant had a middle name or middle initial, perhaps that could be used to naturally disambiguate her name from that of the company.
    • We could use parenthetical disambiguation, calling one of them, say, Isabel Marant (designer) and leaving the other at the company, or calling one Isabel Marant (fashion house), and leaving the bio at the unadorned name.
Regardless of which way we go, we generally want to place the more recognizable entity at the unadorned name, with a hatnote to point to the other name, in case people were looking for the other entity. If it's a "close call" or it isn't clear which way to go, WP:BOLD advises to just do what you think is best, and if no one objects, carry on. --Jayron32 20:08, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Jayron32: thanks you so much, very helpful! I'll go through the to-do you mentioned, look at the similar cases in fashion and make a decision. Thanks again!Less Unless (talk) 21:23, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Changing the title/name of an entry

    Hello!

I'd like to put in a request to change the title/headline for the "National Board of Medical Examiners" entry to simply "NBME." This matches our new website nbme.org.

    Best,

Nicole Fortuna — Preceding unsigned comment added by 65.207.85.8 (talk) 18:29, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nicole: Has the name of the organization changed, or just the branding on the website? I ask because when I go to http://nbme.org I can see clearly, at the bottom of the page where it says "Have any questions", the full name of the organization is spelled out. It seems to me, based on that, that the organization name is still "National Board of Medical Examiners", and that the abbreviated name is just used to make the website easier to find. Can you clarify or show us any documentation that shows that the organization has changed its name? --Jayron32 18:34, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) You may make a request at requested moves, but unless the abbreviation is now the most common name of the organization, I'm not sure such a request will be accepted.

I don't see a reason to provide any clarification. The Rachel Price that you keep mentioning is quite different from the Rachael Price that we have an article for. When we have an article on Rachel Price, then we can add a disambiguation tag at the top of the article. But until then, I don't see a reason for pointing out a different person who doesn't seem notable enough for an article here at Wikipedia just yet. †dismas†|(talk) 22:20, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Thoughtmatters: There are at least twenty people in the United States named "Rachael Price" or "Rachel Price". Only one of them has a Wikipedia article. We do not "clarify" this for any of those people. We add hatnotes or or other disambiguation only when there are multiple people of the sane name with Wikipedia articles. -Arch dude (talk) 23:51, 5 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Hatnote explains how we do it but we only do anything when a subject is mentioned in another Wikipedia article a reader may be looking for. A hatnote should always link a Wikipedia page and never an external website. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:02, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Brad roe, if you are wanting to write an autobiography, please don't. Have a read of Wikipedia:Autobiography; We have encyclopedic articles here, that have to be based solely on what reliable sources have published, and it is very difficult to do this about yourself. Additionally, even if they were to be able to write about themselves in accordance with all policies and norms, most people aren't notable enough to have an article. Our inclusion criteria is that any subject must have recieved significant coverage in reliable sources independent of the topic, which most people haven't. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 18:09, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Srscab34 You have edited your user page, which is not article space and not indexed by search engines. It is a place for you to introduce yourself to the Wikipedia community in the context of your Wikipedia use.
To create an article, you should use the Articles for Creation process. However, your username tells me that you are associated with the company you are writing about. Please read about conflict of interest and paid editing as you have some required disclosures to make. You should also change your username to be more individualistic at Special:GlobalRenameRequest. Please also review Your First Article as successfully writing a new article (not just a mere "page") is the hardest task to undertake here. 331dot (talk) 18:12, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Srscab34: you also created a draft article. If you submit that draft for review, it will be declined, because it does not demonstrate that its subject is a notable organization by our definition: see WP:NCORP. Please read Wikipedia:Common sourcing mistakes (notability). If you force the draft into main space as an article, it will be deleted, for the same reasons. I speculate that the subject is not notable, but I could be wrong: See WP:AMOUNT. -Arch dude (talk) 18:22, 6 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Creating an article

@Interstellarity: It looks as though the 2020 article existed only as a redirect until 2016, so probably much too early yet. And if you can't find sources (yourself) then that would also indicate that an article is not yet warranted. Eagleash (talk) 19:02, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Interstellarity: I concur. The people who don't ping you either do so intentionally or don't know how, so adding the additional weight to your sig doesn't seem like it would do much except possibly annoy those who have to parse it. If you think it's necessary, I'd suggest abbreviating it and maybe using a different, and maybe smaller, font (with due respect for accessibility, of course). —[AlanM1(talk)]— 22:08, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think you understand freedom of speech. The Wikipedia servers are in the United states and are therefore protected under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech. The WMF can put whatever they want on these servers (subject to a few constraints like copyright and libel laws). If you have a web site of your own, you can do the same on your web site. You cannot control what we put on our web site, and we cannot control what you put on your web site. Excersizing freedom of speech, WMF chooses to host a consensus-based crowdsourced encyclopedia, and we insist on the use of reliable sources (WP:RS) on this site. Other web sites, exercising their freedom of speech, can and do implement other policies. -Arch dude (talk)

Change the name of "adam's bridge" to "ram setu"

Wikipedia is hurting the sentiment of many hindus living around the world because there is no adam's bridge. We dont believe in adam or eve we just wanted it you guys to change the name as soon as possible. Else i will complain against Wikipedia in the "SUPREME COURT OF INDIA" If you don't want to face any kind of law suit change the name of it atleast on indian server.[angry] [infureated] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 182.69.35.195 (talk) 19:13, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Firstly, please read wp:no legal threats, and also consider we're the world's 13th largest website, and so you probably wouldn't have much luck; we have quite good lawyers.
But, our article title policy states we should use commonly recognisable names (wp:UCRN). The name most used for something in reliable sources is what we use. In the case of Adam's Bridge, that is the most commonly used name; alternative names are given in the lead. ~~ Alex Noble - talk 19:17, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Cf. the article Adam's Peak, and its talk page which faces a regul request for the same thing based on the same misunderstanding. ——SN54129 19:56, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
We display the same articles in all countries. Talk:Adam's Bridge shows five failed suggestions to change the name. I would hope India isn't so censored that it's illegal to use a common name for a location. I would also hope the supreme court of India has better things to do with their time. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:15, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If there is an alternate name which is commonly used, then we can create a "redirect". This means that a reader who enters that other name will be taken straight to the article transparently, and the article lists the alternate names for clarity.--Gronk Oz (talk) 22:46, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Now that I look (which I should have done before) there is already a redirect from Ram Setu to Adam's Bridge. So a reader who is familiar with that name should have no difficulty in finding the article. Within the article, the section on "Origin legends" describes the Hindu legends.--Gronk Oz (talk) 22:56, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) That redirect already exists and has done for 13 years. This is the English language Wikipedia, and we use the name that's most common in English language sources even if it's not the local name (which is very doubtful in this case given that the Sri Lankan government specifically calls it "Adam's Bridge"); thus Germany instead of Deutschland, Greece instead of Hellas etc etc etc. The Indian Supreme Court has no interest in what we call our articles, nor would they have any jurisdiction even if they did. ‑ Iridescent 23:02, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
There are currently 30 redirects.[3] 25 of them have "Ram" in the name. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:40, 7 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Helpdesk, 1. As an senior editor, I have been updating name to match the article file name. Is there a rule that specify it is ok to have a mismatch name? 2. An IP user follows my edits and persistently alters name to not match article changes such as Eugene P. Ruehlmann and Joe Coulombe.

    Thanks, SWP13 (talk) 03:53, 8 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@SWP13: Before you take any other action, you should discuss this with the other editor. Start by assuming, in good faith (WP:AGF), that both of you are trying to improve the encyclopedia, and try to reach consensus on what makes the most sense. I suspect that it may be more nuanced than a simple rule. -Arch dude (talk) 05:01, 8 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nevertheless, there is an established convention that the full legal name begins a bio, and the article title matches the name at the top of the infobox. See MOS:FULLNAME.--Shantavira|feed me 09:43, 8 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Crediting articles in WP in other languages

I wanted to add to an article on a German film which is brief in the English Wikipedia, but quite full in the German one. I recall seeing others tagging and/or crediting an article from another language, but it was quite a while ago and I cannot find info on how to do this. Is it enough to write an attribution note in the edit summary? (I would also find and cite new English sources, of course.) Laterthanyouthink (talk) 05:22, 8 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Laterthanyouthink: See Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia#Translating from other language Wikimedia projects. However, you cannot use a Wikipedia article as reference in another Wikipedia article. If the German article makes assertions, I assume that those assertions are cited to reliable sources. Your English article must cite those references themselves, not the German article. It's perfectly OK if those references are in German. So, you are attributing the Germain article (because it is copyrighted CC-BY-SA), but you are referencing its sources, not the article, because Wikipedia does not consider itself to be a reliable source. -Arch dude (talk) 06:18, 8 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jimkaa: Are you referring to the article in German Wikipedia? I'm sorry, but if it is the case then we can't intervene in the German Wikipedia, and you might like to go to the German Wikipedia. If you knew German, you might consider suggesting ways to improve it. Besides, it really isn't that well sourced. If it were in the English Wikipedia it would probably be deleted as per the Biography deletion policy, but this is in the German wikipedia, which has its own rules. I went through the policy pages, and there does not seem to be a page about BLP PROD. That page cites only your webpage and therefore is considered unreliably sourced (and would probably fail the deletion process). What would you think can be improved? searching for specific non-alphanumeric characters

I am trying to perform a search for the superscript 2 character (²). Until someone edits it, this character is found in Template:Infobox Canada electoral district. Wikipedia style prefers this character be replaced by 2. But before I fix Template:Infobox Canada electoral district, I was thinking, where else is this character? Based on Help:Searching#insource: it seems that the search string should be insource:/regexp/² or maybe insource:/regexp/\², but neither of those, and neither of insource:/² or insource:\² give any useful results. Is there a way to perform this search in Wikipedia, and if so, how? —Anomalocaris (talk) 07:05, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Anomalocaris: I think the correct syntax would be insource:/²/, but that's not working for me. The search indexer may have been told that the ² character isn't important enough to be indexed. I've run a small part of an AWB database scan on a copy of Wikipedia from a week ago, and have placed the results at User:John of Reading/Sandbox. I guess the full list would have about 50,000 entries. Most of the matches seem to be km² or similar units. When are conflicts of interest declarations needed?

I noticed this recent edit at Anthropology [diff], which seemed to be trying to narrow the description of what falls within medical anthropology. The username matches a medical anthropologist, who has her own Wikipedia page (Alexandra Brewis Slade) and the account has only made three edits: the one above, one last October to the Alexandra Brewis Slade page, and just now to List of anthropologists.

The past edit was reverted long ago. My question concerns the two recent edits. I think the edit to Anthropology was done to more narrowly limit the description of medical anthropology to the research Dr. Brewis Slade undertakes. And, certainly, including one's own Wikipedia article on a list page is better done by request (even if accurate), no? Do both of these cases constitute a conflict of interest?

If so, should the list edit be reverted as well?

    (Apologies for forgetting my sig!) --Pinchme123 (talk) 17:27, 9 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Pinchme123: In my opinion an explicit COI declaration by Alex Brewis Slade is needed, and the editor should be following the COI rules WP:COI, if the user is in fact Alexandra Brewis Slade. Farr's Law

I don't want to violate any Wikipedia rules, but shouldn't Farr's Law be an entry in Wikipedia?
