Question

How does a user know if their article is submitted to reviewers or not? All i see is a blue publish button. I have been watching youtube videos about submitting drafts and most of the videos have a 'save' button at the bottom of the draft page. My draft does not have a save button at all. @Azazus: the "save" button was renamed "publish" several years ago. Our lawyers made us do it and it causes much confusion. It means "publish" in the sense of copyright law, since other editors can see your material as soon as you hit that button. It does not mean "publish" in the non-lawyer sense of making it available as a Wikipedia article. Please read WP:YFA to see how to create an article. Changing age over time

Let's say that a Wikipedia article contains a sentence such as this: Former President Jimmy Carter, now age 100, currently lives in Hawaii. (That's a hypothetical example.) Is there some template that will allow the "age 100" phrase to adjust as the years go by, without someone having to manually re-enter it every year? I tried using a template, but it ended up saying something like: Former President Jimmy Carter, now July 31, 1920 age 100, currently lives in Hawaii. Joseph A. Spadaro, that template is meant to be used in an infobox, which is why it came out garbled in the article. Best to say that he turned 100 on a certain date, in prose.--Quisqualis (talk) 04:19, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

I disagree in Carter's case. His age is routinely mentioned in sources. There is also the bit that infoboxes are supposed to summarize material that is in the body of the article, not be the only place something is found (not that I necessarily always agree with that, but it does seem to be the standard). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 06:20, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

@Shoegal2547: Use the Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard. Your proposed picture appears to have been taken by a US government employee and is therefore in the public domain, so upload it to Commons, not just locally to the English Wikipedia. Doubt about references

I share Eagleash's uncertainty over the exact question. If you mean the table format found in the Filmography subsection, the table tool for that kind of table can be accessed via "advanced" in the options at the top of the edit window, and the how to is found at HELP:Tables. Félix An Your article did little more than confirm the existence of the product you wrote about, as well as a criticism of it. Wikipedia aritcles must do more, they must summarize significant coverage in independent reliable sources that shows how the subject meets Wikipedia's special definition of notability. Successfully writing a new article is the absolute hardest thing to do on Wikipedia. If you haven't already, I would suggest reviewing Your First Article and using the new user tutorial to learn more about the process. You could then visit Articles for Creation to create and submit a draft for another editor to look at before it is formally placed in the encyclopedia, so you find out any problems first. 331dot (talk) 13:57, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

Google book search

Google books often provides snippets from a book rather than the entire contents. The Google books page includes an option to search for text. I think it is the case that the search will apply to the entire book not simply the snippets available for preview, but I'd like someone to tell me if my assumption is correct. In particular, if I search for " Ashkenazi" as I did here, can I state that the response "no results found in this book for Ashkenazi" means that I can say the word does not appear in the book, versus the more limited claim that it does not appear in the available snippets?--S Philbrick(Talk) 15:13, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

inter-language link

While editing the article on Elena Nikandrovna Klokacheva, I tried to construct a link to an article in the Russian Wikipedia on Pavel Osipovich Kovalevsky. It is red, but I can't see what I did wrong. Will someone please set it right, or explain my mistake, or both? J S Ayer (talk) 15:51, 31 July 2020 (UTC)

Everything is working as intended there. correcting error on a page

a page is locked to prevent vandalism but it is listing dangerously inaccurate information. The page for the III% states it is listed on the Southern Poverty Law Center as an anti-govt group. This is false information as the III% are listed no where on the Southern Poverty Law Center. @Deborah Pendleton:, you mean this page at the SPLC's website? The page labeled "Antigovernment Movements" that devotes a paragraph to Three Percenters and also lists many individual 3%er organizations/militias? Is that the one that is "...listed no where on the Southern Poverty Law Center"? Unlike many claims disseminated by various groups, Wikipedia relies on citing sources and that looks like a well-cited claim to me. I hope this helps. Is there a way to search for pages that are in specific category combinations?

For example, say I want to generate a list of pages that are in both Category:FA-Class biography articles and Category:FA-Class India articles? Or Category:FA-Class biography articles and Category:FA-Class Religion articles? How would I go about doing that? @ONUnicorn: PetScan has advanced features like subcategories. The search box can handle simple cases with incategory:. A talkspace search works: Talk: incategory:"FA-Class biography articles" incategory:"FA-Class Religion articles". It can be combined with other search parameters but it can only search individual pages, not something with one thing on the talk page and another on the article. @RudolfRed: It's my understanding that VPT is for when you suspect something wrong with the site. If there was something wrong with the site, there would be far more complaints than one. Virtually any problem or question involving use of the site could be considered a "technical issue" depending on the user's knowledge level, so the distinction doesn't seem very useful. It's also my understanding that some very technical people help out on this page. If no resolution is forthcoming on this page, then VPT could be tried. ―Mandruss ☎ 00:21, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

Hello, Hitcher vs. Candyman. I'm dubious that any of your sources are reliable, apart from Entertainment Weekly. Certainly WP:RSNP lists BuzzFeed as not reliable, and some editors don't regard Biography.com as reliable, though there is no consensus on that one. CHATEAUSOLEIL Who is "us"? Only a single person should have access to and be operating your account. Regarding your question, list articles such as the one you edited should only have people listed who already have an article on Wikipedia, or at a minimum has an independent reliable source to support the content. 331dot (talk) 11:32, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

While the person in question (Austin Fernando) does have an article about him, you did not provide a wikilink to that article. If you are associated with any such entity (and perhaps otherwise) you cannot use this as a user name, since it implies a group user. ARegularWisconsinite, that's pretty much it. I'm guessing your concern is: "are you allowed to use templates that others have created for (presumably) their own use?" Everything on Wikipedia is covered by WP:CC BY-SA, so you are allowed to take someone else's edits here and build upon them. No eplicit attribution is needed, since you cannot use a template without adding its name to your page source. If you copied the text of a template inn order to make a customne template of your own, you would need explicit attribution. -Arch dude (talk) 20:13, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

Basically yes. If the source code itself provides a way for an interested editor to see where the original "creative elements" came from, then no further attribution is needed. If you do a copy-and-paste, then you must attribute the source, per Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. This is just my common-sense interpretation: If in interested editor has a way to see where the information came from, then the requirement for attribution is satisfied. -Arch dude (talk) 20:50, 1 August 2020 (UTC)

When I copied a whole table from someone and pasted it in my userpage, I gave an attribution to the user as a courtesy, but don't know if they ever saw it or care. Hello, Phumzile Nozinyo. Do you mean you would like a picture of yourself on your user page? If so, you need to upload a picture which you have the copyright to to Wikimedia Commons: it's easiest using the Upload wizard. When you have got it uploaded, it will tell you the string you need to put on your user page to display the picture. If you have a selfie, that's easiest. If you want a picture that somebody else took, then they probably hold the copyright, and it's easiest to ask them to upload the picture to Commons.

I sugget you have a look at User pages to see what is allowed on user pages. You're allowed to have a limited amount of information about you that is not related to your work as a Wikipedia editor, but promotion or advertising is not allowed. I don't think anybody will object to the amount you say about your work at present, but please don't include any more promotion about it. --ColinFine (talk) 09:54, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

While researching a very odd story concerning the assault of Senator Tim Carpenter in Madison, WI., I came across a couple of articles that claim to have been written by Anne Tyler. The articles are about one Samantha Hamer and Kerida O'Reilly, who allegedly assaulted the Senator during a BLM protest in Madison, WI. A Google search of their names brings up the articles on one wikibious.com.

I am dropping this note out of concern for Ms. Tyler's good name and Wikibios alike. I trust Wikipedia has means to combat this type of misinformation, and wish all of you well.

The term Wiki refers to a type of software (there are hundreds such) and to the sites that any of use this software (there are tens of thousands of such). The term predates the MediaWiki software that The WMF uses. Accidental File Naming Process.

Hello. I uploaded a file to Wikipedia. However, my file had a processing error and it repeated it's name WAY too many times. I can't figure out how to rename or delete the file. Footnotes in headings

Hello, Laika. I'm afraid that you (and Universal Music France) have a misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is: it is not social media or a directory, it is an encyclopaedia, which contains neutrally written articles about notable subjects, based almost entirely on independent published materials. The article Laïka Fatien is not your page, it is Wikipedia's article about you, and UMF should not have created it, at least, not without declaring their Conflict of interest. The article is likely to get deleted, unless somebody posts enough suitable independent reliable published sources to establish that you meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability. (I'm not saying you don't, just that the article does nothing to establish that you do).

Having said that, you're welcome to upload and add a picture, provided that the copyright holder (which will usually be the photographer, not you, unless you have an agreement that specifically assigns copyright to you) is willing to license the picture under a copyleft licence such as CC-BY-SA, (which will allow anybody to reuse or modify the image for any purpose). If you or your photographer wishes to do that, please use the Upload wizard.

As for translating into French: there was a French article fr:Laïka Fatien, but it has been moved to fr:Utilisateur:Hannah Swerve/Laïka Fatien, and is also at risk of deletion unless some reliable sources are provided. The only way to keep from seeing such a message is to create an account and choose that option in your account Preferences. The message system has no way to know that the person holding the phone or sitting at the computer using that IP address at that moment has seen the message or donated. 331dot (talk) 14:38, 2 August 2020 (UTC)

Uploading a new logo

How do I include my organization's logo on our Wikipedia page? I've tried to upload the original logo file as well as a screenshot of the file, but Wikipedia keeps saying it cannot determine if the file complies with their terms and that I can only upload a photo I've taken with my camera. PATHFoundationAtlanta First, you should create a new account with a username that reflects that a specific individual is exclusively operating your account(your real name is not required, just something unique to you). Something like "JoePublic of PATHFoundation" would be acceptable. Once you do that, you will need to read and formally comply with the conflict of interest and paid editing policies(the latter is a Terms of Use requirement and mandatory).

@Profcramkumar: It appears that you have written an autobiography at Draft:Dr. C. Ram Kumar. Wikipedia doesn't have profiles, it has encyclopedia articles. Notability, and What Wikipedia Is Not (^I accidentally clicked enter before I was finished)

"Notability" seems to me to be a somewhat vague concept. What exactly constitutes "notability"; and why isn't merely the state of having a significant amount of factual/accurate/coherent information written about it, and being widely referred to (or in some way related to something that is widely referred to), not sufficient alone for a subject's inclusion? In other words, why can't Wikipedia be an "[almost] indiscriminate collection" of organized information (excluding original research, for I understand Wikipedia is not a place to publish original content)?

For example, concerning the franchise Dungeons and Dragons, which as a whole is notable, I've noticed that there have been many articles about characters, races, places, etc., that have been deleted recently. Where, exactly, is the dividing line between "notable" and "not notable" when it comes to fictional elements of a notable franchise, and what is the purpose behind placing that line where it is? Citing how widely cited a paper is

I made the claim that Yeo 2011 is widely cited, which it is. Google & Bing searches show it is cited 3365 times. citeseer show it has 20 pages of references, but none of those are stable URLS. I did various searches, but the only results are neuroscience journals pushing their own journals. Do you have any ideas for how create a valid citation?
