The 2023 Indian Premier League (also known as TATA IPL 2023, due to sponsorship reasons and some time referred as IPL 2023, IPL 16) is the upcoming 16th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), a franchise Twenty20 cricket league in India. It is owned and operated by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).[1]

From this season onwards, the IPL scheduled to return to its original Home and Away format, after a gap of four years [2] due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and the previous three seasons being held at neutral venues. The 10 teams will play their home games at their predetermined home grounds across the nation.[3] In the last season group stage contestants entirely held in Maharashtra state, in arenas of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and Pune.[4] IPL sheduled to organise fan parks in 45 cities of 2 union territories and 20 states, where fans can watch live game on large screen, it was not organised since 2019.[5]

Assam's Barsapara Stadium is going to debut as a venue, hosting some games of Rajasthan Royals.[6] IPL sheduled to organise its opening ceremony in this edition after gap of some years. Atal Bihari Vajpayee stadium also will debut as host arena in this edition for Lucknow Super Giants.[7]

Rules

In this season, BCCI decided to introduce some new rules in the league, such as there will be penalty of 5 runs on the fielding side if unfair movement of fielder or wicketkeeper happened and the delivery on which it took will be declared dead by the onfield umpire. The captains were allowed to declare playing XI and impact player's list after the toss, so that they can play according to the playing conditions. If any team failed to bowl overs in allocated time, then only four fielders will be allowed outside the 30 yards area.[8] Teams can now also review wides and no-balls using DRS, as earlier introduced in the WPL.[9]

The BCCI introduced an "Impact Player" rule ahead of the season. Teams can name four substitutes, or impact players, in their squad for a match in addition to the starting XI. One of these may be used as a substitute during the match.[10]

Personnel changes

In November 2022, Shikhar Dhawan replaced Mayank Agarwal as the captain of Punjab Kings.[11] Anil Kumble was also replaced by Trevor Bayliss as head coach of Punjab Kings. In August 2022, Chandrakant Pandit replaced Brendon McCullum as head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders.[12] Tom Moody was also replaced by Brian Lara as head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad.[13] Mumbai Indians have promoted Mahela Jayawardene to a strategic role in the franchise and recruited Mark Boucher as coach for 2023.[14]

The IPL auction took place on 23 December 2022 in Kochi.[15] The most expensive player was Sam Curran, bought by Punjab Kings for 18.50 crore (US$2.2 million), the most paid for a player in the history of the league.[16]
