International chess tournament
The Chess World Cup 2023 is a 206-player single-elimination chess tournament that is taking place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from 30 July to 24 August 2023.[1] It is the 10th edition of the Chess World Cup. The top three finishers in the tournament will qualify for the 2024 Candidates Tournament.[2][3] The tournament is held in parallel with the Women's Chess World Cup 2023.
Jan-Krzysztof Duda is the defending champion.[4][5]
The tournament is an 8-round knockout event, with the top 50 seeds given a bye directly into the second round. The losers of the two semi-finals will play a match for third place.
The players who finish first, second, and third will qualify for the Candidates Tournament 2024, which will be a tournament to decide the challenger for the next World Championship.
Each round consists of classical time limit games on the first two days, plus tie-breaks on the third day if required. The time limits are as follows:
- Two classical time limit games: 90 minutes, plus a 30-minute increment on move 40, plus a 30-second increment per move from move 1, per player.
- If the match is tied after the classical games, players will play two rapid chess games, with 25 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move, per player.
- If the match is still tied, players then will play two more rapid chess games, with 10 minutes plus a 10-second increment per move, per player.
- If the match is still tied, players then will play two blitz games, with 5 minutes plus a 3-second increment per move, per player.
- If the match is still tied, a single blitz game, with 3 minutes plus a 2-second increment per move, will be played to decide the match. A drawing of lots will determine which player plays white. If drawn, the players will switch colors and play again, until a decisive result is obtained.
Each round lasts three days: two for classical time control games and a third, if necessary, for tie-breaks. Rounds 1 to 3 run from July 30 to August 7; August 8 will be a rest day; Rounds 4 to 6 will run from August 9 to 17; August 18 will be a rest day; and the last two rounds will run from August 19 to 24.

Summary
Round 1
The tournament's youngest player, 15-year-old IM Ediz Gurel, won a brilliant game on day one in an upset win over Serbian GM Velimir Ivic. The Turkish prodigy was well-prepared against a rare variation of the Ruy Lopez, and later found a stunning combination involving a Greek gift sacrifice which led to unavoidable checkmate. In another big upset, 2407-rated Mongolian IM Ganzorig Amartuvshin won with the black pieces against Spanish GM Eduardo Iturrizaga. 123-point-higher-rated GM Denis Kadric lost to Chilean GM Pablo Salinas Herrera, who won a piece in the middlegame. 2180-rated IM Dante Beukes from Namibia had winning chances against GM Ivan Saric in a nail-biting game, but he misplayed, and the game ended in a draw.[32][33] Canadian GM Eric Hansen and American GM Christopher Yoo had travel problems and failed to turn up for their matches.[34]
GM Eltaj Safarli arrived too late for Game 2 after winning the first game over Panamanian IM Roberto Carlos Sanchez Alvarez. Ivic hit back against Gurel by smoothly outplaying his opponent to force tiebreaks. Kadric lost a second game to Salinas, who made it to round two for a second World Cup in a row. Peruvian IM Gianmarco Leiva survived a 136-move thriller to knock GM Anton Demchenko out of the World Cup, winning 1½–½ over his 249-point-higher-rated opponent. Israeli GM Ori Kobo fought for 160 moves to try and get the win he needed to force tiebreaks against Austrian GM Valentin Dragnev, but it wasn't to be, with a draw sending Kobo out of the event. GM Karthik Venkataraman won a brutal game against GM Gregory Kaidanov, and will face number-two seed GM Hikaru Nakamura in round two. GM Levan Pantsulaia and GM Harsha Bharathakoti exchanged two thrilling wins and are going to tiebreaks, with the winner facing world number-one GM Magnus Carlsen in round two.
