Some Wikipedians have formed a project to better organize information in articles related to the bicycle and Cycling. This page and its subpages contain their suggestions; it is hoped that this project will help to focus the efforts of other Wikipedians. If you would like to help, please inquire on the talk page and see the to-do list there.

Title

WikiProject on Cycling

Scope

This WikiProject aims primarily to create, improve and organize articles relating to the bicycle and cycling. This includes but is not limited to the history of the bicycle and cycling as a competitive sport, as recreation, and as a basic method of transportation.

Parentage

The parents of this WikiProject are WikiProject Sports and WikiProject Transport.

Descendant WikiProjects

Similar WikiProjects

Overlapping WikiProjects

An overlapping WikiProject produces some pages which are at least partially cycling-related, even though the primary interest of the WikiProject is about something other than cycling. If the talk page of an article contains templates from more than one WikiProject, then those WikiProjects could be considered as overlapping. In general, WikiProject Cycling seeks to co-exist harmoniously with other WikiProjects which share editing duties on some of the same articles. We can all help make articles better.

  • Wikipedia:WikiProject Olympics publishes results for Cycling at the Summer Olympics.
    • As of January, 2007 it appears there is no coordination of efforts between WikiProject Cycling and WikiProject Olympics. The cycling-related pages of WikiProject Olympics appear to have few or no direct links to cycling-related categories or pages edited by members of WikiProject Cycling.
  • Wikipedia:WikiProject Films creates pages about many films, some of which are cycling-related, or feature cycling in some non-trivial way.
  • Wikipedia:WikiProject Books creates (or may create) some pages about cycling-related books.
  • Wikipedia:WikiProject Magazines appears not to exist yet. If it did exist, project members might create some pages about cycling-related magazines, or have a style guide for magazine articles we could follow.

Similar wikis

Wikipedia is but one of many wikis. Wikipedia has especially strict requirements for articles. Potentially many articles useful to cyclists do not meet Wikipedia's requirements for encyclopedic content. This can sometimes lead to disputes when well-intentioned cyclists create new articles on Wikipedia. If you write a cycling-related article here and it ends up on WP:AFD, please transwiki it to a wiki which welcomes a wide range of cycling-related content, and exists to serve the interests of cyclists. We will of course continue to develop cycling-related articles on Wikipedia which do satisfy the requirements for encyclopedic content.

Examples of articles unsuitable for Wikipedia

These are some examples of cycling-related article topics which may end up on WP:AFD if they appear on Wikipedia:

  • Small, non-famous bicycle clubs
  • Local group ride schedules and routes (unless a ride is notable, i.e., famous enough to have been written about in reputable media)
  • Reviews of bicycle shops and equipment
  • Travelogue-type articles
  • Articles with many unsourced statements
  • Articles about yourself (if you are famous, better to let someone else write about you)
  • Non-notable bike trails, paths, cycleways, etc.
  • Advocacy articles (although we can write about notable advocacy movements on Wikipedia, actually advocating something must be done elsewhere)
  • Promotional articles (persuading people to join your ride, club, or vote for something)

When in doubt, develop your cycling-related content first on a hospitable wiki such as Bicycling Wiki, and then try copying the article to Wikipedia after you have it in encyclopedic shape. On Bicycling Wiki, you have much more freedom to edit cycling-related content without having to fight to keep your content from deletion.

Case study in constructive dispute resolution

Mountain Biking on Mount Tamalpais was nominated for deletion. Several editors resolved the dispute by trans-wiki'ing the non-encyclopedic portions of the article to Bicycling Wiki. See:

If you start a cycling-related article and it ends up on WP:AFD, please read this deletion discussion for ideas on how to resolve the dispute quickly and painlessly for all concerned. Be aware that Wikipedia has its share of deletionists who may sometimes simply delete things without first finding suitable alternative homes for content they delete. Fortunately that did not occur in the above episode. You can reduce your chances of losing your work by choosing the appropriate wiki for the type of content you want to edit.

Participants

To join the project, add yourself to the list here and briefly summarize your interests. Also please add {{WikiProject Cycling}} to your user page, which will automatically categorize you into Category:WikiProject Cycling members. Adding yourself to Category:WikiProject Cycling members this way reduces the chance that some other project member will give you an unneeded welcome or greeting after you edit an article in the project. And please invite your computer-literate cycling friends to join the project!
