Straw poll for selecting photos of the Indian cricket team for use in articles

Yesterday, the YellowMonkey waddled down to Adelaide Oval and started clicking his camera furiously each time he saw something on two legs walking past in a blue shirt, ie, a member of the Indian cricket and its entourage. In some cases, multiple shots of the same subject were produced with an approximately similar level of photographic quality. Due to his deficiencies in photographic ability and his inability to work out how to control the buttons and the unwillingness of the Indians to stand still (or pose for contrived photos), the pictures have deficiencies, and various attempts of the same subject often have different types of deficiencies.

Now, the fun part is that everyone is welcome to help in selecting which picture is used in the respective player's article, and feel free to have a laugh and the random clickery of the monkey. Perhaps it is time to formulate a variant of the Infinite monkey theorem for cameras. No knowledge of cricket is particularly needed, especially since most are simple portraits and a fresh perspective from a person not familiar with the sport would be appreciated. Thanks, Blnguyen (bananabucket) 05:23, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Random observations about the Indian cricket team

The factual content of this piece is totally true.

And so, one sunny day, the YellowMonkey waddled down to a cricket field to await the impending arrival of the Indian cricket team for some training before a match in the Commonwealth Bank ODI tournament. The day before, the cricket ground's office had promised the arrival of the team at 14:00. At 14:30 nothing. The security fellow tells the monkey that they won't be there until about 16:00 to 17:00. So, they must be still enjoying their nap. The monkey returns at 15:45, and spots two fellows in an Indian shirt, one batting and the other bowling. Dinesh Karthik, the spare wicket-keeper batsman, has arrived early and is toiling away against the leg spin of the fielding coach Robin Singh, while the rest are still cruising along. He looks to be concentrating heavily. About an hour later, a bus arrives through the back entrance. It appears that the Indians, not known for their physical stamina or running abilities, have been ferried, rather than walking 1 km from their hotel to the ground. The group walk off the bus and lethargically trot towards the dressing room. Sachin Tendulkar is nowhere to be seen. After moping around in the dressing room for about 15 minutes, most of the players find themselves on the playing field, for some fielding practice. Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh, often associated with attitude problems, wander along around ten minutes later. But where's Tendulkar? He comes along a while later, perhaps having tried to enter separately to avoid the throng. Nevertheless, he needn't have bothered. He isn't mobbed. The Indians run around in a square formation, while trying to throw balls at one another while catching another. They appear to be having a lark, and it would seem unlikely that a random passer-by would know that they are supposedly international athletes from the second ranked team in the world. The players seem more interested and amused by their colleagues' dropped catches and fumbles, of which there are many. As one does in training, one does in matches. Irfan Pathan however, is exempted from fielding practice. The managed has escorted him away to deal with the media. His team-mates, perhaps envious, heckle (most notably Suresh Raina) him while he is being led away. From the looks of things, Pathan appears to enjoy deflecting the media more than fielding. After about 20 minutes of catch, drop and giggle, the physio John Gloster calls the players to lean on the fence and bend over and do some stretches. The monkey parks himself directly in front of some of the players to take portrait snaps of them. Harbhajan doesn't stretch, he has his head up and is joking with Praveen Kumar, so the monkey obliges and takes a photo while some of the others are grimacing with their heads down. Nor is Sreesanth stretching. He is asking the kids in front of him about their weekend cricket match. At the end of the blue line, Sachin Tendulkar isn't even bothering to posture. He is leaning his back on the fence. Goodie. Another portrait of the Little Master. Perhaps that's why he gets so many leg strains. And then Gloster shuffles around, not bothering to tell some of the "seniors" to get cracking. And after about five minutes, the fitness activities. Unsurprisingly, there is no jogging session given the way they run in matches. And so they head down to the nets. Time for batting and bowling. Robin Uthappa walks at the bowlers. Munaf Patel ambles in without appearing to be exerting. Piyush Chawla flights the ball; Harbhajan does not, even less than Rohit Sharma. Mahendra Singh Dhoni is playing with the abandon that he seems to have shelved since becoming captain, big shots with feet off the ground of yesteryear. Tendulkar is not there at all. As before, the players like to watch their team-mates and have a heckle. Dhoni's medium pace extracts a big edge from Uthappa; the Indians give Uthappa a roasting. They argue as to whether it was too wide for the imaginary keeper to catch, or whether there is a simulated first slip in place. Uproarious laughter. Dhoni walks back, and runs in again. Got im!!! Uthappa nicks the ball again and again, where is the slip? More debate, more heckling, more roaring. And on it goes.... Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 04:57, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

1913 Liberty Head nickel GA progress

Sorry, I just noticed your comments on the talk page a day or two ago. I'll try to get some work done on that today with addressing your points.

A few responses to the issues you raised:

  • How would you suggest I emphasize that nickel=5 cents US face value without it sounding clumsy and out-of-place? I'm trying to think of something but am having difficulty deciding how to fit it in.
  • Expanding the lead has been previously suggested, but I don't want to simply repeat what is further down in the article.
  • "Finest" is indeed a technical term in this context; it means that the coin was rated higher on the "Sheldon scale" (a standard method of coin grading) than any of the other examples. See Coin grading for some details, though that article needs work.
  • I'll try to address the other concerns you raised as soon as I get the chance.

*** Crotalus *** 15:29, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I am a bit stuck but I just added one in randomly. Feel free to adjust if you wish. As to your second point, the point of the lead is actually to provide a summary and wrap-up of the article. I'll tweak the finest thing for so the uniniated like me can find reading material to clarify things for them. Thanks, Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 05:54, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You deleted an article of this title once as a copyvio: is the current version the same, and if so, what was the copyvio of? --Calton | Talk 02:49, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Van Hanh

Can you help make an article for the ancient monk Van Hanh (maybe the diacritics are Lý Vạn Hạnh)? Badagnani (talk) 06:08, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The diacritics on Van Hanh are definitely correct, but I havent heard of this monk. Was he one of the emperors who renounced the throne? Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 06:12, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I learned about this via the great veg restaurant on Bolsa in Little Saigon (Orange County). Some articles here at WP say he installed Lý Thái Tổ in the early 11th century. Badagnani (talk) 06:14, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Eamon Sullivan

What's the story with the continual adding of this copyvio (or at the least, unsourced) material? Is it a group of editors or just one persistent one. Is it worth protecting the article for a while? -- Mattinbgn\talk 05:35, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can see that you're trying to make a gang around you to stop other people to submit articles and of course better, richer and copyvio-free articles.

Look, I don't care what you are or what your title is, all I know is what you do, and what you are doing right now is an absolutely sickening... not use but misuse of an undeserved power that you hold by trying to exert you own opinion on a subject.

The most recent edit of other version of Eamon Sullivan is an integral article and does not have any sign of copyright violation.

So before you start imploring other people to follow you in your heedless practice, have an honest and attentive look at the article and judge for yourself, or if you are too busy in your real life to respond swiftly to queries, you'd better kiss your unreal life goodbye and stick to your real life. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Cyrusace (talkcontribs) 14:23, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Viet independence movements

Is there an article anywhere about the independence movement of Vietnam generally. If there is, I can't find it. Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 02:51, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Independence from the French? There's some info about that at First Indochina War, as well as scattered among the articles about various individuals in the movement. Badagnani (talk) 02:56, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There was no single unified independence movement throughout French colonialism. I guess the best place to put it in would be in History of Vietnam. DHN (talk) 03:12, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was aware that there were lots of different factions doing different things, but there are a lot of books on the general independence struggle. For example, see Indian independence movement which also discusses a wide gamut of varying ideologies that were fighting for independence. Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 02:34, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If there are similar articles on independence movements in other nations, I'd say you should start a stub for the Vietnamese one. However, the Vietnamese have had independence movements against various nations; I think you mean independence against the French. Does vi:WP have an article on this? Badagnani (talk) 02:37, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I guess Vietnamese anticolonial movement would be a good name for it, or you can gloss the Vietnamese phrase "phong trào chống Pháp". DHN (talk) 02:44, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Vijayanagara musical nonet

There are a few copyvio problems with this article too. I request you take appropriate action to ensure that these problems don't exist in the article's locked state.

Material from this article on the Samskrta Text ‘Sangitasuryoday of Bhandaru Laksminarayana’ published in ‘Sangeet Natak’ Journal, vol.XXXVI, No.2, 2001, pp.30-38. is here is where the problems stem from. For example; the article here states "At the height of the Vijayanagara empire great saint-composers like Purandara Dasa, Sripadaraya, Vyasaraya, Vadirajatirtha, Kanaka Dasa, Tallapakam Annamacharya and his descendants, and Nijagunashivayogi flourished. Musical forms, the Kriti, the Suladi, the Ugabhoga, the Dandaka, the Urttanama, the Namavali, the Mundige, the Gita, the Thaya and the Prabandha developed and found wide currency during this period." while the source states "...that great saint-composers like ^Sr¶pŒdarŒya,VyŒsarŒya, PurandaradŒsa, VŒdirŒja, KanakadŒsa, TŒüüapŒkam AnnamŒchŒrya and his descendants, and NijaguÄa½sivayogi flourished. The most influential musical forms—K¾¤ti, SµulŒdi, UgŒhoga, DaÄÎaka, U¾ttanŒma, NŒmŒvali, MuÄÎige, G¶ta, ¡ThŒya and Prabandha —developed during this period."

NB: The source in the link provided is a PDF file that is zipped. Upon unzipping the file and opening it, the text would appear a little more identical, as it seems there are some extra characters in the version I have quoted.

P.S. Thanks for your note earlier - will keep that in mind. Ncmvocalist (talk) 08:32, 27 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I locked it for a short while to calm things down over an edit war which is my opinion doesn't have any real effect on the content except to make people angry. Thankyou Blofeld, the most important thing is that you're back in action. And yes, the coverage of Asia generally on Wikipedia is not very good. One of the reasons is that there is not much Asian participation. A lot of what is there is written my non-Asians; the % of content by people not from a given country is very high among Asian areas of Wikipedia. Oh I can have a look, although I have a personal policy of not reviewing the same article for GAC twice, since only one person is reviewing, it's good to mix up the variety of opinions among the reviewers. So that there are less extreme review results. I am one of the tougher guys out there, in terms of content expectations. Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 04:57, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Chaffe sep (talk · contribs) seems to be another sock puppet of Itihaaskar (talk · contribs). Evidence: he makes the same edits on Mariam-uz-Zamani (I mean as the latter's IP, 124.125.208.23 (talk · contribs), did)

I'm completely sure that he is his sock puppet. Could you please check it? ShahidTalk2me 07:08, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it's him. However he is on another computer. He appears to have two computers. I've blocked Itihaaskar for two weeks. Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 04:57, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! Thanks for your intervention in the matter.
I would also like to clarify. I had an initial problem with the historical accuracy section being placed on the Jodhaa Akbar article. I thought it was irrelevant to the film article. He was reverting every single edit of mine (including formats, reviews I was adding etc.) and I eventually tried to collaborate with him anyway. But going through his text, I encountered lots of POV claims, misrepresentation and incohorence on there. So I started a discussion, a kind of an analysis, which he had not accepted and even ignored. The page was just unprotected, so using my analysis, I have rewritten the section. I'm sure, once he is unblocked, he will be reverting it to his version (because he is stuck by his opinion that Jodhaa Bai was not the name of Akbar's wife, although this claim is not factually approved). I hope we can make him understand how things are going on Wikipedia, and that we have to discuss things. In addition to that, I don't want the page to be protected because of new edit wars.
Best regards, ShahidTalk2me 16:11, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'll keep an eye on him when his block expires. If he being blatantly disruptive then I'll just ban him from the page rather than lock it if only one editor is messing it up for everyone else. Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 01:48, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Take all the time you need, my friend. I've been quite tied up as well as of late, so I completely understand. After all, there are no deadlines on Wikipedia. :) --Hemlock Martinis (talk) 19:47, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How did Euryale ferox get on DYK? I thought DYK articles have to have been written in the past 2-3 days. Badagnani (talk) 05:10, 2 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's acutally five days, but if the article is 80% new content, then it qualifies as being effectively new and is elegible. So if you turn a 1k article into 6k article, it is eleigible even if it was first created five years ago. Blnguyen (vote in the photo straw poll) 04:57, 3 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This editor has (as predicted) started dribbling his nonsense in Carnatic music. He assumes consensus is reached on frivolous grounds, sometimes where there has been no comment made by any other editors. As well as adding content that is not encyclopedic, he is adding POV and OR information, as well as entirely misrepresenting what reliable sources state, though mainly, synthesising material. The editor has been warned on several occasions both on the article talk page and on his own that such edits are not valid and may result in his ban, but he has chosen to ignore these warnings. He has not come spewing to my page here. Ncmvocalist (talk) 16:52, 6 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am thankful and appreciative that you feel that I am worthy of the trust the community requires of its bureaucrats, and I hope to continue to behave in a way that maintains your trust in me and my actions. I hope I can continue to count on your support when I decide to once again undergo an RfB. If you have any suggestions, comments, or constructive criticisms, please let me know via talkpage or e-mail. Thank you again. -- Avi (talk) 15:51, 7 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FLRC

If there's a separate section for FLRCs, you might want to consider splitting the FLCs into their own section as well. Cheers! Kirill 02:04, 10 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
