2d stealth games?

Greetings. I am looking for 2d stealth games for the PC, the likes of which I have yet to encounter in a two dimensional world. The closest approximations I can think of are Splinter Cell and Thief; Are there any games that you folks can think of off the top of your heads that are not entirely dissimilar in gamesply style? 216.178.50.32 (talk) 04:37, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines is sort of 2D, the action is viewed from a 3D angle but the gameplay is 2D. You could also have a look at some of the older games mentioned in the Stealth game article - X201 (talk) 19:14, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The card game "Concentration" / "Memory"

According to the page on Concentration (game), it's variously known as "Memory" / "Concentration" / "Pelmanism" — what I need to know is how these names are currently distributed across the English speaking globe. I posted a query on the Talk page for the article; would appreciate answers here or there -- Thanks, Deborahjay (talk) 07:17, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I (in southern England) have always called it 'memory pairs'. Algebraist 12:37, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(midwest USA) If you call it "Concentration" I'd expect to see a rebus behind the pairs, because of Concentration (game show). "Memory", on the other hand, makes me think of the Milton Bradley kids game which had pictures of animals and shapes to be matched. That same game played with regular playing cards? I never even considered the possibility until I followed the link to Concentration (game) in your question. --tcsetattr (talk / contribs) 23:45, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In southern England (with midlands influence) we just called it 'memory' or 'the memory game', sometimes 'pairs'. 'Concentration' was a different game we learnt at Guides, involving rhythm and sitting in a circle. No cards. Concentration... Concentration has begun. Feel the rhythm... Slap clap click click. 79.66.99.37 (talk) 00:19, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We called it "pairs" but I heard someone call it "Kim's Game",which is not quite accurate IMHO hotclaws 12:13, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't Kim's Game a different memory game?

Thanks to all for your responses, which I've posted on the Talk page for the game. -- Cheers, Deborahjay (talk) 10:44, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Microsoft vs Yahoo

Its appears there may be more to Microsoft's desire to buyout Yahoo. Windows Media Player versus Yahoo's Music Jukebox. My new RCA player can use either to convert and load music files but more importantly both provide access to online stores so in reality it looks like Microsoft's real interest in Yahoo is to eliminate one source of competition. I can think of several reasons why I am against such a merger. Are there others? 71.100.11.39 (talk) 08:15, 26 April 2008 (UTC) [reply]

music SONG LYRICS

I am looking for the song lyrics for an old possibly classical OR BROADWAY SHOW song. Some of the lyrics are as follows: "LET THERE BE MUSIC, FROM THE FRUITED PLAIN, WITH MUSIC FROM THE HEART, MUSIC FROM THE AZSURE SKY, OVER A PEACEFUL LAND"... DO YOU RECOGNIZE ANY OF THEM?

IF SO, CAN YOU PLEASE PROVIDE ME WITH THE COMPLETE LYRICS? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Shortieprice (talkcontribs) 19:31, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

"Fruited plain" seems to be from America the beautiful.

The information you are looking for is from a song titled "Let There Be Music - Hymn to America" Harold Flammer Choral Series. Copyright 1949, by Harold Flammer, Inc. Music by Frances Williams. Words by Marjorie Elliott. It is a beautiful song.

A Song

I lived in Hawaii for some time recently back in 07, and there is this song that i liked alot its a slow song but i cant seem to remember the name or the artist. I know part of the lyrics but no lyric search engine can ever find the song, so i figured i ask here. Some of the lyrics are "give me the grind give me the morning grind, anything you want me to, ill abide." And there is a part i remember that goes like this "its a shame for me to unbutton your dress". Thats all i can remember. Its a slow type or reggae or Hawaiian style music. Thanks for any effort given to help me find the song! --Nick910 (talk) 21:20, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Success

Why wasn't the Nintendo 64 more successful than the Super NES? Why wasn't the GameCube more successful than the 64? Interactive Fiction Expert/Talk to me 05:57, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Video game console > Video game crash of 1977 might have a lot to do with that. The GameCube also had to compete with PC games. Just a wild guess. --Lisa4edit (talk) 08:04, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I heard it is because PS2 games are easier to copy.F (talk) 11:32, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The N64 was less successful than the SNES because it used expensive (and restricted) cartridge media while its competitors used CDs that allowed video, more voice acting, and higher quality music. The Gamecube was less successful before of its dearth of 3rd party support and the public's opinion of it being a "children's console". 206.252.74.48 (talk) 12:59, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Considering the Super NES was introduced in 1987 I find it hard to believe the the video game crash of 1977 had anything to do with it. The simple fact of the matter is Nintendo didn't adapt to the changing market. That's why the wii is so successful, it appeals to an entirely different market than its competition. GfK

Why has the GameCube been wiped out of the GfK lists? They still sell GameCube games in some places - and I don't mean places where you buy older stuff. —Preceding unsigned comment added by IntfictExpert (talkcontribs) 06:10, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Without chasing your through the whole List of marketing topics, here's the brief gist of it. The GfK is a market research organization. Companies employ those to find out what consumers would like to buy and how much they'd be willing to pay for it (very roughly put). Companies are usually only interested in that before a product is on the market and during the first phase after it's introduced. The profit a product earns a company follows a curve. Usually the product can be sold for the highest price when it's new and no one else sells a similar product. Then the company will gradually drop the price of the product to attract people who couldn't afford to buy it when it was still new and expensive. Once the company has recouped their investment into R&D and has a newer product on the market, they are no longer interested in who will buy the "old" model. They will probably continue to make it for a while, but will no longer spend money on advertising and promotion. So all the money they make from the product in excess of production cost and distribution/administration overheads is free. They'd no longer hire the GfK to find out who wants to buy the "old" GameCube because they now want to know how much money they can make selling the Y-box. There are lots of products that follow different curves, e.g. eggs would sell constant until someone introduces a new diet that says you need to eat lots of them to stay healthy, paintings by some painter don't sell at all until 100 years after his passing they sell for millions of dollars. Hope this helps. --Lisa4edit (talk) 06:47, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Classical Music Piece in Advertisements

British Airways (and a couple of other companies) used a piece of classical music in their advertising a while back. The piece was sung by 2 female voices and as far as I can remember had no (other) instruments in it. Sorry for the skimpy details, but I can't very well hum it to you in typeface. Does anyone know what that piece is and what CD I might find it on. THANKS. --Lisa4edit (talk) 06:58, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Game

A Sonic game on the SNES? I doubt it. Sega and Nintendo weren't producing games for each others consoles in those days, and there certainly wouldn't have been a game that featured Sonic and Mario together. Did you dream it? Mario and Sonic appeared together for the first time in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games for the wii. The Sega Genesis was a major competitor for the SNES so Sonic (a Sega character) never appeared in any (official) games on the SNES. Mad031683 (talk) 16:45, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Doctor Who after series four

Does anyone know of any confirmed companions after series four? As far as I know David Tennant has confirmed reprising his role for a few bank holiday specials...but who will accompany his as his companion during these episodes, or even after that? Thanks so much for any info! --Cameron (t|p|c) 18:11, 27 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

According to the Tardis files from Wikia, there is nothing confirmed for the 2009 Holiday Specials or Season Five in 2010. It is rumored that Rose Tyler MIGHT be coming back as there is evidence to suggest she will be in the season finale of Season Four. Assuming she doesn't die or gets trapped in another parallel universe again, that could mean she'll return for Season Five, but this is all fan speculation you understand. Also, assuming that Torchwood is on for more seasons, we'll probably see Captain Jack Harkness again. Finally, at least one fan wants Sally Sparrow of Blink (Doctor Who) to return, but who knows? More than likely, it'll be characters introduced from the current Season Four, and Holiday Specials that'll appear in 2010, as well as brand new characters written in as time goes on. You may want to try The Doctor Who Forum for additional info. Its the largest Doctor Who discussion board online, but bewarned, its got quite a few spoilers. Question

Am I the only person in the world who thinks the GameCube is better than the Wii? Interactive Fiction Expert/Talk to me 08:01, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well, The Wii gaming library has more 3rd party support than the GCN, and the Gamecube had more quality control. Most of the 3rd party Wii games are utter crap (and I usually have an open mid about these things), also its harder to deign a game for the controllers than you might think (hence the reason why the 3rd party low-budget games suck). Even though the Gamecube had a smaller library than its competitors and games with poor audio compression, it still followed the conventions of a game console, where as Wii went a whole different direction. But, I'm the kind of person who thinks Super Smash Bros. Brawl is just an overly hyped, glorified version of Super smash Bros. Melee. I still play GCN games, but I do praise the wii for some aspects, and I still play N64 and fret that I can't put a cartridge into a Wii and don't want to buy a dumbed down version off of the virtual console. Sorry I went off topic. I don't think you're the only person who thinks that but I'm fairly neutral when it comes to the "Generation wars." — Kjammer   08:29, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, The Reference Desk is for more factual information rather than opinion. Perhaps you could search Google or similar for a Wii/GameCube discussion forum if these questions interest you? Adam (Manors) 15:40, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Technically he did ask a factual question, whether he was the only person in the world with that opinion, I would have said yes since the wii has all the capabilities of the GC plus much more. It's basicly the Gamecube 1.1, with new features that appeal to the casual gaming market which is what has made it such a success. I will agree with Kjammer that there is an overabundance of crap games for the wii, but they can get away with it because the casual gaming market isn't as good at telling bad games from good as the hardcore gaming market. Mad031683 (talk) 16:35, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That's the third fourth 'question' you've asked about how good the GameCube is. I'd hate to see you accused of asking promotional questions. DJ Clayworth (talk) 17:03, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since the Wii contains all the necessary hardware to play GameCube games with (as far as I know) 100% perfect support, I don't see how the GameCube could be "Better" in terms of capabilities. Another way to look at it is that the Wii is a GameCube that can also play Wii games.
If you're asking about some other way of defining "better", then you'll have to specify.
Frankly, your post sounds like sour grapes phrased as a question. APL (talk) 17:06, 28 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I still don't see this as a factual question, or how we can help. I'm sure if he truly wanted a definite answer he would take the time to survey his community until a Yes came up, somehow I don't think that will happen and I agree with APL's sour grapes theory. If you don't use a modem to get online do the following: do an "advance search" with google or yahoo and look for "Dr. Who" TV online free. Then check out which of the sites you like, they will have different episodes available. Some are going to be duds that are "subscription only". It will take quite a while to load but you can watch the episodes in sequence and when you want to without having to depend on some TV stations' program director. WARNING! Use firewall and very good virus protection and adaware or the like. I guess you have already looked at the Wikipedia page. --Lisa4edit (talk) 00:11, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that there are two rather different popular versions of Dr. Who (and a lot of unpopular versions). Basically, there is everything before the Tom Baker series. Then, there is the exceedingly popular Tom Baker stint as Dr. Who. Then, there is everything after Tom Baker until the show was canceled. There is even a movie which has every Dr. Who except Tom Baker (who thought that would be popular?). Then, there is the reincarnation of the series that is running now. So, you have a choice. You can watch the Tom Baker episodes (in just about any order - they are mostly all good). Or, you can start with the new series. If you have a lot of time, you can watch both. An advantage to watching the old ones first is that you'll see many nods to the original series in the new one - including many returning characters. -- kainaw 00:40, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(after edit conflict) Doctor Who was first shown in 1963, but was discontinued by the BBC in 1989. This is known as the "Classic Series". A TV film was made in 1996 (strictly for fans, and not for all of them, either: don't start there) In 2005 the series was relaunched. This reincarnation is known as the "New Series". It follows on from the original series, with the same character, backstory, universe details, but differs in style to suit the modern audience: 45 minute (generally) stand-alone episodes, higher budget special effects and so on (It takes a fan to fully appreciate the cardboard sets of the early episodes). It is best to start with relaunch: "Series 1" (2005). The first episode "Rose" is designed to introduce a new audience to the Doctor and his world. Over the course of the series, explanations are made about the Doctor: that he's the Ninth incarnation, he's a Time Lord, travels in a TARDIS and so forth. Don't get hung up on all the detail: it all gets explained as you go along. So, to cut a long story short, start at Series 1 (2005) Episode 1, and work your way through at your leisure. By all means, rent or buy the DVDs. This is the preferred, legal, recommended route, and provides the BBC with the revenue to continue making the episodes. Enjoy! On the contrary. If you read Other (Doctor Who) it turns out that he is the genetic reincarnation of a Londoner. ("The Virgin New Adventure Human Nature, by Paul Cornell, obliquely implies that the Other was a Victorian scientist who built a TARDIS-like craft and travelled to Gallifrey when its people were still primitives." And if that's not to your taste, be sure to burn Jules Verne, Edgar Allen Poe and Mark Twain's works for good measure) Not to mention, he is expressly an eccentric for his species; a fetish for a backward, similar-if-simpler version could almost be seen as rustic. Of course, there's something to be said for science /fiction/ not lining up nicely with /realism/ for some reason that escapes my feeble imagination at this hour... -- Ironmandius (talk) 04:07, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if you live in the United Kingdom and have a TV lisence, you have the right to view free episodes on this site. --Cameron (t|p|c) 12:37, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I've got people hooked to the older incarnations of the Doctor, by introducing them to the 2005 series and on. For some David Tennant is a gateway drug. Also, you could check out some of the Big Finish Productions radio plays, which span several doctors. Oh and while your at it, if you like that hokey scifi charm, go ahead and take a stab at the first three seasons of Red Dwarf. Cheers, AtaruMoroboshi (talk) 14:40, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I would just like to add that whatever you may think of the 'Classic' doctors (I'm a Tom Baker fan) the production values of the new series are much better than the old. For someone new to Dr Who I would strongly recommend starting with Christopher Eccleston for that reason alone. DJ Clayworth (talk) 15:07, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think that's a fair statement. I prefer the endearing quality of low-budget - but that can be very off-putting to new fans. AtaruMoroboshi (talk) 19:55, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd definitely agree with DJ Clayworth that someone completely new to it should start with the new series, probably at the beginning (Rose) since it assumes a new viewer. It's much more watchable for a modern viewer. If you like it, you might then want to view some of the older stuff.
I'd suggest that everything Kainaw said should be taken with a pinch of salt (I can't tell if there's sarcasm in there). Dr Who before Tom Baker was hugely popular, and it continued to be pretty popular after him. Personally I think the Peter Davison episodes are more accessible for a modern viewer who hasn't been 'trained' to Dr Who; look past the poor special effects and there are some really interesting ideas being tried out. If you're going to watch Tom Baker episodes, avoid the later seasons when he'd lost interest and was phoning it in (until you're a fan).
The Five Doctors is a quite fun classic story (sort of) featuring the first 5 doctors, made as a special thing for the 20th anniversary. It's available as episodes or spliced together as a film. You might enjoy it once you've seen a couple of episodes of classic stuff; my brothers and I laugh our way through it (although I don't think it's really meant to be that funny). Sadly, it doesn't feature William Hartnell as he was dead by then, but it does feature an actor playing William Hartnell playing the Doctor! It sort of features Tom Baker, but he didn't film any new stuff for it. Having agreed to be in it when they asked, he then cancelled pretty last minute and they had to write him out using previously unseen footage from Shada, an unfinished Douglas Adams authored episode. It was popular.
If you're watching Peter Davison episodes (once you've watched some newer stuff), avoid Timeflight and The King's Demons like the plague. Just about anything else, you'll probably enjoy.
Whatever you do, do not watch the Children in Need special Dimensions in Time (which features 5 of the 7 classic doctors surrendering their dignity alongside Eastenders 'stars'. This was made after Dr Who was cancelled) nor the 1996 TV movie, a horrendous attempt at appealing to a mass American market to get funding for a relaunch that just removed all the best bits, added a love interest and set the adventure in America. Americans hated it. It was oddly popular in Britain for such an appalling film; I can only assume people were desperate for any Dr Who. If it had been made for fans it might still have sucked, but at least it wouldn't have been set in America nor have added a love interest. Watching either of those before you have decided you like Dr Who could put you off for life!
Please do buy or rent the DVDs. Not only does it provide funding for more Dr Who (yay!), it also lets the BBC know that there is a market, which secures not only more new Who but funding for restoring old episodes. 79.66.99.37 (talk) 22:43, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Any episode where a new "assistant" or "companion" is introduced is probably a good place to start, as the whole thing needs to be explained to the companion, and the audience gets the benefit of being reintroduced to the whole premise of the show. For specifics, I echo everyone else's recommendation that you start with Rose (Doctor Who) from 2005. APL (talk) 15:19, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Merouane Zemmama appearance record

Can anyone provide information about football (soccer) player Merouane Zemmama's appearance/goals stats for his clubs previous to Hibernian F.C.? I can't find anything in English on the internet and a limited search of pages in French has been fruitless too. Prior to Hibernian he played for Raja Casablanca in Morocco from 2001 - 2006 with a loan spell at Qatar SC in 04/05. These are high profile clubs in their respective countries so I'm sure the information is available somewhere. Prior to that he played for another Moroccan club, Chabab Tabriquet. I'm looking for league records only.

I'm also looking for the same information about team mate and compatriot Abdessalam Benjelloun who played for Maghreb Fez.

Thanks. Am4387 (talk) 14:26, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sega vs Nintendo

I couldn't decide whether this would belong here or in hummanites desk. Anyway, I decided to put it here (please tell if I was wrong to do so). Here's my question: What started the rivalry between Sega and Nintendo, was it the NES? Or was it that they were just the two biggest video game companies in the world so naturally they were rivals?--76.176.17.191 (talk) 15:15, 29 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looked to see if Wikipedia had an entry on corporate rivalry, but does not. This is just my opinion, but I think with any market, there are two main leaders. The nature of business is to be competitive. Coke vs. Pepsi, Apple vs. Microsoft, CNN vs FoxNews, Nokia vs. Samsung...--70.167.58.6 (talk) 20:24, 30 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm pretty sure they intentionally emphasized the rivalry with the magazines they controlled on both sides. Advocacy can be a powerfully marketing force. APL (talk) 12:55, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. I really like the song and I had been watching Princess Tutu. If you don't mind though I'm going to rant for a second.

I wanted Princess Tutu to go with the Prince not Princess Ruu. I wanted it to turn around for Tutu I'm so upset that he went with Ruu. I hated Ruu.

Thank you again for the information on the main theme song. I'm sorry about what I wrote above, but I had to let it out. Thank you.

What is the name of the anime?

I cannot remember the name of an anime that I use to watch religiously. It was about a girl with orange hair and her classmates who crashed landed on another planet. I know there was a rich blond boy who bullied others and would cry for his daddy whenever aliens came. And there was a blue alien whom they named Allan I believe. What was the name of that anime? I just can't put my thumb on it. If it helps it was about a class that when on a field trip there was a orange hair girl, with a rich blond boy, a girl who had long curly purple hair, and the main character(the orange hair girl) had a pink helper that looked like a giant cat who will refill on water. They landed on an alien planet and had to learn how to trust each other and what not. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.142.208.226 (talk) 04:13, 30 April 2008 (UTC) Thank You Always Cardinal RavenCardinal Raven (talk) 00:18, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Cardinal Raven[reply]

I can only now go to .edu and .govs.(This isn't very fun.) The reason this being is because my roommate hated the spam he was getting from .coms and .nets so he blocked them. He put it on his computer and my computer. He won't stop the restriction either. I'm sorry for all the trouble I have caused you. Lets just put the answer as I do not know that anime. I do not want to continue wasting your time. I'm sorry. And thank you for all the help you have tried to provide me. If this helps I thought the anime had Survive in its title or its American title. Name of a movie

I remember seeing this movie late at night on TV quite a while ago (8-10 years? maybe less) but I have no idea what it's called and it's been bugging me ever since. No doubt a lot of the details are a bit fuzzy or just plain wrong, but this is basically what I recall about it: It is set in a near-future in which everyone in America is forced to be "average". Although it is set in the future, the whole look and feel in the first half of the movie is that of the 1950s. The main character is a teenager who is marked down in class for having too high grades, because he's deviating from the average/normal. He becomes dissilusioned with the world he finds himself in and enters into an underworld of illicit intellectual persuits. The scene I remember the most is when he goes to some kind of intellectual brothel where he pays a woman to play chess with him. Eventually he comes to the attention of the secret organization of above average people who are secretly orchestrating the whole society from behind the scenes. One of the special agents working for the society explains that they made the world like the 1950s because that was when America was at its happiest. He falls in love with the agent and they have sex. There's also scene where she shows him some previously forbidden movies from the popular culture of the past and says something about Macaulay Culkin, an injoke to the audience that implies that in this future Culkin went on to become a successful actor as an adult - presumably dating the movie to the early 90s, before Culkin quit acting? There's another scene around about here that talks about how the President of the United States is selected completely at random, to ensure that only the most average person gets the job. I forget exactly how it ends, but presumably the protaganist attempts to disrupt the status quo, because the last scene is him back at home, having had a lobotomy to ensure that he is now an average citizen again.

Ok hope that wasn't too unclear... I'm sure *someone* here knows this movie. --86.135.70.17 (talk) 00:20, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Any suggestions?

I find myself with a bit too much spare time on my hands at the moment, so I'd like to get into a really good computer RPG. Now, I'm a bit picky when it comes to games, so I'll list my likes (and dislikes):

I loved Arcanum, Fallout 1 & 2 (and even tactics), Planescape, Deus Ex, bioshock (not really an RPG, but the Ayn Rand atmosphere...)
I can't stand Baldur's Gate (too complicated, too much like playing a simulation of a table-top RPG), and I thought Oblivion was a big disappointment (what's the point of an RPG where there's no point in leveling up?)

Basically, I'd like something (relatively) recent, and if possible not an unoriginal Sword&Sorcery. Any ideas?

Thanks a lot... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.103.238.164 (talk) 16:54, 1 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I know you said you don't like Oblivion, but have you played around with the editor there. I found the game that the designers delivered for Morrowind not to my liking, but now have created a version with a different flow of tasks, a different outcome and had lots of fun designing stuff.
