The third season of America's Got Talent, an American television reality show talent competition, premiered on the NBC network on June 17, 2008.

NBC announced in August 2007 that the network had renewed the show for a third season. Preliminary auditions were held in Charlotte, Nashville, Orlando, New York, Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Chicago from January to April. Sharon Osbourne, Piers Morgan and David Hasselhoff returned as judges. Jerry Springer also returned as host. It will also be shown in the United Kingdom on ITV2.

This season, the audition stage became different. This season, the X on the stages (above) and (judges table) matched the ones from Britain's Got Talent or has been borrowed for this season.

Preliminary Auditions

Week 1

Aired on June 17, 2008, 2 hours. Auditions from New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles were shown.[1][2][3]

  • Jonathan Arons, a trombonist/dancer performed to "Bad Girls" by Donna Summer.[4]
  • Indiggo, Romanian twin sisters Mikaela and Gabriela sang "New York, New York" by Frank Sinatra[5]
  • Nuttin' But Stringz, sibling violinists Tourie and Damien. They combine classical music with hip-hop.[6]
  • David Martin, an illusionist
  • Scott Land, a puppeteer that created an unusual marionette, an uncooked chicken, that danced, laid an egg and picked up a flag. The act is named "The Amazing Sal Monella"
  • Plastic Musik, Stomp-like performers with trash cans and colorful batons
  • Jazmin, a quartet of female singers
  • Kaitlyn Maher, a four year old that sang "Somewhere Out There" by Linda Ronstadt and James Ingram[7]
  • Slippery Kittens, a group of high-energetic burlesque strippers comprised of mothers.
  • Jonathan Burkin, baton twirler[8]
  • Derrick Barry, male Britney Spears impersonator performed to "Toxic".[9]
  • Polina Volchek, a woman hula-hooper
  • Sterling Silver, a clog dancing troop
  • Cafidia Stuart, 15 year old sang Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing"
  • Sick Step, a hip hop dance troop.
  • Extreme Dance FX, a contemporary young clog team
  • Neal Boyd, 32 year old insurance salesman and opera singer sang "Nessun dorma" from the opera Turandot.[10]

  • Rachel Star - read poetry while standing barefoot on broken glass
  • Debra Weiner - singer. She did not stop singing when X'ed by all three judges, and had to be escorted off the stage by Hasselhoff.

Week 5

Aired on July 15, 2008, 1 hour. Auditions from Atlanta, and Dallas.[63][64] [65]

  • Bruce Block and Sarah Jessica - magician/general performer. Appeared in the previous season of the show as well. This time, he lay on a bed of nails and held a board on top of himself for his assistant to dance on and sing "Anything Goes". Hasselhoff then asked to stand on Brock as well, to establish that the bed of nails was indeed real.[66]
  • Dorae Saunders - Tina Turner impersonator lip-synced and danced to "Proud Mary".[67]
  • Tropidanza - salsa dance troupe
  • Fast Wally - juggler
  • Bryan Cheatham - stripper who sang "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith.
  • Zooperstars - Oversized animal mascot versions of various sports celebrities, already a popular act at various minor league baseball games and other sporting events. Performed to "Tootsee Roll".[68]
  • Dallas Desperados Dancers - The dance team of the Dallas Desperados Arena Football team.[69]
  • Xclusive - Kenneth Parrio - robotic miming to a self-mixed sound effect track.[70]
  • Donald Braswell II - sang "You Raise Me Up" by Josh Groban. Former professional opera singer, his vocal cords were severed in a freak car accident eleven years back. He was told by doctors he might never speak normally again, let alone sing. This was his first time back on a professional stage since the accident.[71][72]
