Longevity claims are individual claims to extreme human longevity (generally age 110 or older, or supercentenarianism). Many individual claims have either no verification or only partial evidence; longevity claims that have been fully verified according to the standards of the Gerontology Research Group and/or the Guinness Book of World Records are reflected in the established list of supercentenarians.
Fully verified claims
Longevity claims differ from longevity myths in that the age claimed is within the margin of scientific possibility (generally considered to be 130 years or less) and the claim was not constructed solely within a longevity tradition framework (such as in narratives of the Biblical patriarchs, village elders, or the fountain of youth). The main point of difference is that a "longevity claim" is theoretically possible whereas a longevity narrative is not, or has already been proven false.
- Only approximately seventy people in modern history have been documented as reaching the age of 114.
- Only about twenty-five of these reached the age of 115.
- The current oldest verified living person is Kama Chinen of Japan, who is 129 years, 177 days old.
- The oldest person verified by modern standards, and the only person with absolutely undisputed evidence to have lived to be over 120, was Jeanne Calment of France (21 February 1875 – 4 August 1997), aged 122 years, 164 days.
Problems in documenting
- The first two people Guinness accepted as reaching 113, both of whom were male, have now been discredited.
- The first three people to be acknowledged by Guinness as reaching 114 have all had their claims disputed.
- Of the ten people regarded by Guinness or the Gerontology Research Group to have reached 116, three are subject to substantial doubt.
As the Guinness states in numerous editions from the 1960s to the 1980s, "No single subject is more obscured by vanity, deceit, falsehood, and deliberate fraud than the extremes of human longevity." Despite the evidence of the extremes of verified modern longevity, as established by Guinness and the Gerontology Research Group (GRG), stories in reliable sources still surface regularly, stating that these limits have been exceeded, even at extremely unlikely odds. Responsible validation of longevity claims involves investigation of records following the claimant from birth to the present, and claims far outside the demonstrated records regularly fail such scrutiny. The United States Social Security Administration has public death records of over 100 people said to have died in their 160s to 190s.
It is typical that extreme longevity claims come from remote areas where recordkeeping is poor. However, generally speaking, the life expectancy is rather lower in these areas than in the areas where undisputed claims are typically found.[citation needed]
In the transitional period of record-keeping, records tend to exist for the wealthy and upper-middle classes, but are often spotty and nonexistent for the poor. In the United States, birth registration did not begin in Mississippi until 1912 and was not universal until 1933. Hence, in many longevity cases no actual birth record exists. This type of case is classified by gerontologists as "partially validated".
Proximate records
Since some cases were recorded in the census, there may be obtainable evidence that tends to support the age claim. Sometimes, however, a single year may be off.
- Susie Gibson: Gibson and her family claimed a birthdate of 31 October 1889. The earliest record available, the 1900 census, lists her as born in October 1890. The 1900 census is a proximate record, not an immediate record written in 1890. The gerontologist's methodological conclusion is that it is nearly certain (sufficiently verified) that Gibson was at least 115, and that additional documentation establishing 116 is possible.
- Maggie Barnes: Barnes claimed to be 117. Inconsistent records suggested that she was at least 115, but possibly a year older. The conclusion is that Barnes was at least 115, but could have been 116 or 117.
- Rosa Williams: Some evidence exists to support the allegation made by the family that Williams was born in May 1886. The 1910 census listed her as 22, suggesting she was born, rather, in May 1887 or 1888. She died in January 2001. The conclusion is that she was at least 112 years old at the time of her death.
Late-life records
In another type of case, the only records that exist are late-life documents. Because age inflation often occurs in adulthood (to avoid military service or to apply for a pension early), or because the government may have begun record-keeping during the claimant's mid-lifetime, claims unverified by proximate records also exist. Unverified claims are less likely to be true (because the records are written later), but are still possible. Modern demographic mortality tables show ages above 130 to be extremely unlikely on the order of trillions-to-one odds. Longevity narratives did not come in for serious scrutiny until the work of William Thoms in 1873, who proposed the 100th birthday test: is there evidence of the person claiming to be age 100, prior to the post-centenarian claim? This test does not prove a person's age, but does separate the typical pension-claim longevity exaggeration (which tends to reach 115 to 125) and the spontaneous claim that a certain village elder is over 150.
- Hanna Barysevich: Barysevich claimed to have been 118. This can be neither verified nor disproven from Belarus records. The claim is possible because it is within the realm of modern demographic possibility. However, the odds of surviving to age 118 are very small (billions to one).
- Pasikhat Dzhukalayeva: In 2004, The Moscow Times reported that 122-year-old Dzhukalayeva of Chechnya claimed to have been born in 1881. The claim is possible, but her death has not been reported since that time.[1]
- Susie Brunson: There is an obituary of her in The Morning Star Newspaper[2], and The New York Times[3]. The NY Times says that her family claims that she was born in 1870 and lived to age 123. Her Social Security records indicate that she was born in 1888; making her only 106 when she died.[4]
Unverified claims
Standardized lists of incompletely verified longevity claims include the present and past range of individual claims not linked to longevity myths. Lower ages are more likely to be true and higher ages less likely.
The wide range of geographical distribution of extreme claims tends to be counterevidence against the "longevity village" myth, or the idea that extreme longevity tends to come from only certain specific regions. Rather, demographers believe that age claims are universal except where documented systems of recordkeeping are sufficient to separate the factual cases from the fictional. All notable claimants without records may be listed as incompletely verified. Claims may be true even though records do not exist or have not been found, so such lists include all such grey area cases.

Past claims
These notable claims of age 115–130, with full birthdate and deathdate, have no publicly available early-life records to support them. As with all such claims, lower ages are more likely to be true, higher ages less likely, and ages over 130 extremely unlikely (at trillions-to-one odds according to modern demographic data). Those over 130 are listed in the longevity myths article.

Withdrawn claims
These claims have been shown to be exaggerated.
- Ida Stewart of Alexandria, Jamaica, allegedly born 5 November 1886, is now said to have been born 13 November 1896, age 127 years, 356 days.[105]
- Rosa Brown of Pleasantville, New Jersey, allegedly born 15 March 1890, is now said to have been born in 1899, and died on 16 March 2009 aged 110; according to her Social Security records.[106]
- Rosie Dollison of Whitehaven, Tennessee, allegedly born 10 June 1891, is now said to have been born in 1904, age 105.[107]
- Micajah Weiss (born 3 June 1800?) was listed in the 26 September 1914 The New York Times obituary as a 114-year-old claimant to longevity, where it was stated he was New York's oldest person. He was a U.S. Civil War veteran.[108] Census data suggests he was born in 1810 or later.[109]
- Sylvester M. Magee, allegedly 126, and Charlie Smith, allegedly 125, were featured by Time magazine in 1967.[110] Magee claimed a 29 May 1841 date of birth and Smith claimed an 1842 birth. Smith died in 1979, but his marriage certificate indicated he lived only to 105, and the 1900 census indicated he lived only to 100.
- Mary Ramsey Wood of Hillsboro, Oregon (20 May 1787? – 1 January 1908), was allegedly 120. The only Mary Wood of Hillsboro in the 1880 and 1900 censuses was born in 1809 or 1811,[111] which yields an age of either 96 or 98 on Wood's deathdate.
- William Coates (1889 or 1911 – 23 February 2004) was widely called the oldest man in the United States. The Washington Post stated that William Coates was aged only 18 in the 1930 Census; this suggested he was no older than 92.[112]
- Annibal Camoux of France, allegedly born 1638, died in 1759 in Marseilles, allegedly aged 121. In 1957 the French historian Louis Thibaux discovered that Camoux had in reality been born in Nice in 1669, and was thus actually only 90 years old when he died.[113]
- Noah Raby (1 April 1772? – 1 March 1904) was featured in The New York Times and the New York Herald; he claimed to have heard Washington speak at Norfolk and to have fought in the War of 1812. However, census data indicates that Noah Raby was only 81 years old at the time of his death. He is listed as 28 years old in the 1850 Census.[114]
