The Jaipur Metro, is a proposed rapid transit system in the Indian Metropolitan city of Jaipur, Rajasthan. The State Government has approved the detailed project report (DPR) prepared in consultation with the the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation and proposed metro rail project is awaiting approval of the Government of India.[1]

In the first phase, 28.5 km long metro corridor will be built at a cost of Rs 5,300 crore (US $1.2 billion) East West corridor includes 9 km elevated corridor from Mansarovar to Chandpole and 3 km underground stretch from Chandpole to Ramganj.

North South corridor includes 13 km elevated and 3.5 km underground route from Durgapura to Panipech. Services expected to begin on the 9 km elevated route by March 2013.Work on North West corridor to be completed by 2014, the corridor will be operational by March 2015. DMRC to submit DPR by November 2009, ground work expected to begin by August 2010 .

Jaipur Metro Rails Corporation has been constituted for management of Metro Rail Services in city.

Proposed Routes

Route 1 (East-West Corridor)- Ramganj to Mansarovar passing through Badi Choupar, Choti Choupar, Chandpole, Ajmer Road, Gopalpura Bypass and New Sanganer Road. This corridor will be similar to the one proposed earlier. A nine-km elevated track connecting Chandpole to Mansarovar be the first to be completed.

Route 2 (North-South Corridor) - The North-South corridor earlier proposed between Jawahar Circle and Jal Mahal has been changed. As per the new plan, the corridor will connect Sanganer to Panipech. An elevated track will start from Sanganer, passing through Durgapura, B-2 bypass, reaching JLN Marg and then Bajaj Nagar. From here it will take a turn to reach Tonk Road. It will reach Ajmeri Gate and will shift to underground tunnel to reach Sindhi Camp and then cross Bani Park. From there it will once again shift to elevated tracks to reach Panipech.

However It is still not been confirmed whether Jaipur Metro will connect Jaipur Airport. Most METRO Rails in World have their Lines connecting Long Distance Rail System and Airport to other parts of the city.

Sindhi Camp will be the major point of intersection for the both the corridors and will have two stations. The EW corridor arriving from Mansarovar will run underground from Sindhi Camp to Ramganj.

The underground metro is being envisaged to run nearly 60 feet under the surface and to develop each kilometer, the estimated cost is Rs 370 to 450 crore. In the proposed format, the metro will run nearly five kilometers underground while the remaining will be on elevated tracks. The construction cost of elevated tracks will be around Rs 125 crore to 150 crore per kilometer.

"The changes are made in accordance with the needs of the people and avoiding any disturbance to the existing infrastructure. The proposed format is expected to remain the final design. However, as the detailed project report (DPR) is yet to arrive, some minute changes can be accepted accordingly," said a senior official.

Despite the changes, the government is optimistic that the first metro operations will commence in the city by the end of 2013, while the work is expected to commence by March 2010.

Present Status

The State Cabinet, on 22 April 2010, has decided that the Jaipur Metro be built on a PPP (Public Private Partnership) model. This is viewed as a setback for the DMRC (Delhi Metro Rail Corporation) which was earlier eyeing the INR 7,500 crore (US $1.7 billion) project. The state urban development department confirmed that though the DMRC will no longer be building the metro, the department will still use the detailed project report prepared by the DMRC.

Reliance Infrastructure, Larsen and Turbo, are among the major private companies that are planning to be a part in this project.

The urban development department plans to combine the expertise of the Delhi Metro Railway Corporation (DMRC) with private partners for the Jaipur Metro. The proposal has been approved by the urban development minister Shanti Dhariwal after discussions with officials of Union government and Asian Development Bank (ADB). The proposal will soon be sent for the state cabinet’s approval.DMRC will be handed over the responsibility for the construction of the metro corridor, while the rolling stock will be developed in a public private partnership (PPP) model. A similar model has proved effective in Delhi. The rolling stock comprises rail locomotive and coaches. While DMRC will start the construction, private partners will be finalised by June 2011. However, the proposed mixed arrangement will be applicable only on the 9.25 km-long corridor to be developed from Mansarovar to Chandpole in the first phase. The Metro will run on elevated tracks from Mansarovar to Sindhi Camp, while the remaining 500 metres will be covered through an underground tunnel. The 9.25 km stretch is estimated to cost nearly Rs 3,200 crore, of which nearly Rs 1,000 crore will be provided by the state government. The remaining amount will be funded by the Centre, and a loan will also be sought from the ADB. The DMRC will be granted the rolling stock work for Line 1 from Mansarovar to Badi Choupar and Line 2 from Sanganer to Panipech Line 2 from Mansarovar to Badi Choupar . The mega-project is yet to get clearances at several levels, including the funding agencies.
