"I'm Into You"
Song

"I'm Into You" is a song by American recording artist and actress Jennifer Lopez, taken from her upcoming seventh studio album, Love? (2011). The mid-tempo pop song was written by Taio Cruz, Lil Wayne and Norwegian duo StarGate, who also produced the song. Lil Wayne also has featured vocals on the song, after Lopez identified him as her favorite male rapper. In the song, that features double entendre lyrics, Lopez sings about being lost in love and her lover's attraction, while Wayne teases with clever wordplay.

Initial reviews of the song have been positive, noting the song's catchy hook, Island-flavored production and fun lyrics. Originally due for release on April 5, 2011, the song was unlocked and released on April 1, 2011, through a campaign on Lopez's Facebook page. It is the second single from the singer's upcoming album, Love?.[1] A music video for "I'm Into You" began production in Chichen Itza, Mexico on April 2, 2011.

Background

On March 30, 2011, Lopez appeared on Ryan Seacrest's morning radio show, On Air With Ryan Seacrest. There, she spoke about the upcoming release of her seventh studio album, Love?, and her American Idol (season 10) experiences. She also introduced a thirty-second preview of her new single, "I'm Into You".[2][3] Later that same day, a version of the song leaked online to Rap-Up magazine's website and the blogosphere.[4][5] The song was used in a promotional campaign on Lopez's official Facebook page. If enough fans "liked" the song, it would be unlocked for early purchase on the iTunes Store.[6] On April 1, the song was released to iTunes, four days earlier than planned.[7]

Composition

"I'm Into You" is a mid-tempo Island-flavored pop song featuring American rapper Lil Wayne, written by Lil Wayne and Taio Cruz and co-written by Norwegian duo StarGate.[4][8] Lopez told fans that she chose Wayne for the song because he is her current favorite male MC. "To me just the things he says and the way he says it is very unique, and I feel like he has a fresh new voice... He might be one of the best out there right now. He might be the best."[9] It is built around a "trippy" and "synth-heavy beat" and "beachy feel" with a "club-ready refrain," according to Mary Kinney from AOL Music. Kinney commented about Lil Wayne's verses, describing lines like "I'm falling for you, baby / I need a parachute" as clever wordplay.[5][10] According to Rap-Up, on the song, Lopez "finds herself lost in love" and her lover's attraction.[4][5]

Critical reception

Mary Kinney from AOL Music praised the song's "unstoppable production" courtesy of Norwegian producers, StarGate, saying that "The hook of Lopez repeating "I'm into you" will be ringing in listeners' ears long after the song is over, and Lil Wayne provides clever wordplay... The club-ready refrain challenges the listener to not sing along. This song is bound for greatness."[10] Bradley Wete from Entertainment Weekly agreed, further commenting that "J-Lo [is] at her perfect pitch. Her notoriously thin voice never strains–which is great for critical ears. She sounds good, not great. But help from the song’s writer Taio Cruz and production from hit-making team StarGate certainly doesn’t hurt either."[2] Robbie Daw, of Idolator, said "although the beat is sparse and the lyrics are borderline simplistic, the melodies (particularly the irresistible chorus) and Jennifer’s warm vocals give this uplifting piece of pop an extra boost."[11] Bill Lamb from About.com rated it four-stars out of five and went to say that: "From the sound of this single it looks like Jennifer Lopez is planning to extend her pop comeback a bit longer. It boasts an instantly catchy hook courtesy Taio Cruz and Stargate. Lil Wayne stops in for a clean, pop friendly rap, and, with a charming slinkiness to the production, the overall impact is good, clean, dancefloor fun. This will please Jennifer Lopez fans.", Lamb conclued.[12] Robert Copsey from Digital Spy says, "...Jen is wasting no time on a follow-up [to 'On the Floor']. This second release from her forthcoming album Love? might not have the same impact as her current effort, but we reckon this tropical/latino mashup could be her 'What's My Name?'."[13]

Music video

On April 2, 2011, Lopez flew to Chichen Itza in Mexico to film the music video. In one scene, Lopez is sat on the steps of a Mayan pyramid, dressed in a snakeskin outfit with a headwrap, matching bangles, and platform wedge heels.[14] Lopez shared multiple photos, from the video shoot, with her fans through social networking website, Twitter.[15] According to US Weekly, Lopez filmed scenes at "different locations around a Mayan archaeological site."[16] Someone present on the shoot told the magazine that Lopez's video was based on an old Mayan tale. "There is an old Mayan tale about a snake slithering around the pyramids, so Jennifer donned a snake skin flowing dress and slithered around the ruins."[16] One of the scenes was shot at night, where the ancient columns were lit for Lopez to dance around.[16]
