WCSH-TV is the NBC affiliate serving Portland and southern Maine. The station is owned by Gannett Corporation and is also a sister station to WLBZ channel 2 in Bangor, Maine.

History

This station signed on in 1953 from the Congress Square Hotel in Downtown Portland, Maine. This location is responsible for part of the station's call letters (CSH). After the station outgrew the hotel, it moved across the street to where it is presently located.

For a number of years, it was the flagship station in the Maine Broadcasting System, a collection of local radio and television concerns. In 1998, the Maine Broadcasting System was acquired by the Gannett Corporation, which invested money into the station for cosmetic and equipment renovations.

Programming

Today, WCSH continues to produce the highest rated local news program in the state, "NewsCenter". The 5 AM, 12 PM, 5:30 PM, and 11 PM editions are broadcast statewide from its facility via a simulcast on sister station WLBZ in Bangor.

WCSH's ratings are often higher than the two rival stations combined. Most of the station's key news personalities have been there for over ten years.

An outdoors and human-interest program, Bill Green's Maine, airs on Saturday nights at 7:00 pm.

In October 2005, WCSH began airing NBC WeatherPlus on its digital channel. The weather service includes local forecasts from WCSH and WLBZ meteorologists and national updates. NewsCenter WeatherPlus is simlucast in Bangor on WLBZ's digital channel.
