Tezpur University (Hindi: तेजपुर विश्वविद्यालय, Assamese:তেজপুৰ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়) is an Indian Central University located in Tezpur in the state of Assam, India. Currently, the Governor of Assam, Janaki Ballabh Patnaik is the Chancellor of Tezpur University, Mihir Kanti Chaudhuri is the Vice-Chancellor and Amarjyoti Choudhury is the Pro Vice-Chancellor.

History

The establishment of Tezpur University is considered to be one of the outcomes of the Assam Accord,[2] along with the establishment of Assam University and Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.

Tezpur University was established, by an Act of Parliament,[3] in 1994. The then Prime Minister of India, P. V. Narasimha Rao chaired the opening of the University.

Initially, the University operated from the premises of the Darrang College, in Tezpur. Land was acquired at Napaam, a suburb of Tezpur, about 15 kilometers east, of 242 acres (0.98 square kilo-meters), and the premises shifted.

Kalaguru Comrade Bishnuprasad Rava (Rabha) dedicated his entire life for this freedom movement. He donated an ancestral estate of 2500 bigha land received from the British government in favour of the peasants. His slogan was "Haal Jaar Maati Taar" means "those who cultivate should own the land". The present day Tezpur University stands upon the land donated by him. His entire life was characterized by an restlessness to work for the people and he kept on moving around like a nomad. He was also an excellent mass mobiliser.

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering came into being in 2006 as a result of renaming of the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology.

The Department of Computer Science and the Department of Information Technology were merged in 2004 and renamed as Department of Computer Science and Information Technology.

The Department of Computer Science was started in July, 1994 under the school of Science and Technology. It was started with the object of promoting specialized knowledge in the field of Computer Science and Computer Application. In view of the world wide shortage of skilled manpower in the field of Information Technology, the Department strives to channelize talented youth of the region to this challenging and knowledge intensive field by imparting quality technical knowledge and skills in the field. The programmes started under this department were Master of Computer Application (MCA), Master of Science (by Research) in Computer Science and PhD in Computer Science. The programmes have been designed keeping in mind the needs of the global Information Technology Industry.

The Department of Information Technology was started in July, 1997 under the school of Science and Technology. The Department was established with the aim to contribute towards research in the field of Information Technology and to fulfill the increasing demand for highly qualified manpower in the field for Industries as well as academic institutions. The programmes started under this department were Master of Technology (M Tech) in Information Technology, and PhD in Information Technology.

Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering

The department was started in 1997 as the Department of Electronics under the School of Science and Technology. The department was renamed as Electronics and Communication Engineering under the School of Engineering in 2006. The primary objective of the department is to impart education, training and research at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels in frontline areas of electronics and its derived Engineering and Technology.
