KWHY-TV Channel 22 is a Spanish Independent station, owned by the Telemundo network, a subsidiary of NBC.

History

It started life as a business news channel (simply known as The Business Channel), beginning on June 4, 1967 (1st signed on September 22, 1963 and signed off on March 21, 1964 to no avail). In the 1980s, its signal was used for Z Channel's spin-off of a subscription Pay TV service known as SelecTV, which aired on evenings and weekends. In 1990, when SelecTV went out of business, KWHY focused its evening and weekend programming to Spanish-language content, including carrying programming from the Galavision network (now currently owned by Telemundo arch-rival, Univision). In 1996, KWHY became a new home for Shop at Home, which airs every midnight till 6am. That same year, KWHY added a new format for their business programming and simply changed from The Business Channel to "22 Business News" and began celebrating it's 30th Annniversary on the air in 1997.

In 1997, KWHY once again changed its business news format to "Business News 22" (or BN 22, for short) which began shifting its programming to another local area UHF station called KJLA, in order to aired full-time spanish broadcasting (sans Galavision). In 2001, Telemundo (which already owns its West Coast flagship, KVEA Channel 52) purchased KWHY and has remained as a Spanish independent station.

KWHY operates a low-power repeater, KWHY-LP in Santa Barbara, also on channel 22. The station also airs on K53GF channel 53 in Phoenix.
